An Open Letter to DIRECTV STREAM From a Frustrated Cord Cutter
Dear DIRECTV STREAM, When you changed the name from AT&T TV to DIRECTV STREAM in 2021, you mostly kept the service the same -- for better or worse. But since the start of 2022, you've quickly become the chaos live TV streaming service. Most recently, I read an article on The Streamable about your cloud DVR. Apparently, recordings can be saved for up to 9 months now instead of 90 days. But if this is true, why isn't your website updated? It still reflects the last change, unlimited cloud DVR storage and recordings kept for 90 days. (UNLIMITED DVR UPDATE: As of April 2022, DIRECTV STREAM says recordings can be saved for up to nine months. There was previously a 90-day limit. But if you’re recording a series, a maximum of 30 episodes will be stored.) I give you credit for improving your cloud DVR. The previous 20 hours of storage in the base plan was the worst in the industry. But if you're going unlimited to compete with YouTube TV, why not go all the way from the start? And why not offer unlimited cloud DVR to all customers, not just new ones? The cloud DVR confusion isn't the only thing cord cutters need to keep up with. In January 2022, you increased the starting price for 3 out of your 4 plans. Thanks for keeping the base plan the same price. Then, in February 2022, you added a free trial. But this is only for customers who sign up online.
