I'm removing my credit card information from Roku after the company announced a security
0:04
breach affecting more than half a million users. I'm going to talk more about that incident after I walk you through the process
0:11
If you're like me, you added a credit card or other payment information to your Roku
0:15
account when you first set up your device, and then maybe you never used Roku Pay
0:20
Personally, I like to sign up for paid streaming services directly, not through third parties
0:25
like Roku. Removing this information is pretty easy. First, log into your Roku account, the website address my.roku.com
0:34
Then click on payment methods. This is the screen where you go to update your payment method if you use Roku Pay, but
0:40
in my case, I'm choosing to delete the payment method. For that, scroll to the bottom of this page, and right below your billing address information
0:48
and phone number, you'll see the option to remove the payment method
0:52
When you click on that, this pop-up will appear. And Roku is just reminding you that if you remove a payment method, you won't be able
0:59
to make purchases through Roku Pay anymore. After processing this change, my Roku payment information, gone immediately
1:06
So why did I do this? Roku announced its second security breach of 2024 in April
1:12
It affected more than 575,000 accounts. The first incident in March, that one affected 15,000 users
1:21
Roku said both incidents were the result of credential stuffing. That's when hackers obtain stolen usernames and passwords from one platform and then attempt
1:31
to use them to log into other platforms, in this case, Roku
1:35
The hackers are targeting people who reuse the same password across multiple services
1:40
In a blog post, Roku says no data security compromise happened within its systems, and
1:45
Roku was not the source of the account credentials used by the hackers
1:50
Still though, in about 400 cases, hackers were able to log into Roku and make unauthorized
1:56
purchases using the payment method stored. Roku says it's contacting customers who've been impacted by the security breach and it's
2:04
reset their passwords. The company has also enabled two-factor authentication, and that's for all 80 million of its accounts
2:12
I noticed this earlier when I logged in to remove my payment information
2:16
Roku sent a link to my email, and I had to click on that link before I could access my account
2:21
So, if you use Roku Pay, you won't want to remove your payment information like I did
2:26
but you can still take additional steps to protect your account, and that includes creating
2:30
a password that is hard to guess and unique to Roku. Give this video a like if you found it helpful, and find ways to save on my website
