'The Last of Us' stars Bella Ramsey and Kaitlyn Dever break down Ellie and Abby's quests for revenge

Not to get too into spoilers, but from the game, we can guess that Ellie is going to go down a pretty dark path this season

And I would say maybe not unlike some of Joel's rampage moments in season one

So I'm curious, were there any Joel scenes from season one that might have influenced your take on how Ellie goes on this kind of quest for revenge

Well, I think you touched on something there of like Ellie really is becoming Joel in a certain way and would hate that if you said it to her because she thinks that she's the opposite to him

In fact, they're kind of two sides of the same coin. Two sides of the same coin, yeah

There you go. So there's that with them. And so, yes, I think that Ellie, yes, does go to some dark places

And there are, I did sort of try and take, not really from, like, rewatching it

just from, like, remembering how it was to be in scenes with him where he was taking this sort of, like, hard-ass, like, protective stance

And I think that I really tried to, like, emulate that a little bit with Ellie

and, like, thinking about how much she looks up to Joel and how she has learned everything that she knows, basically, from him

It doesn't matter if you have a code like me. There are just some things everyone agrees

or just wrong The first time we meet Abby we meet Abby right in the aftermath of Jules rampage from the end of season one

And the next time we see her is right at the end of the episode. Five years have passed. We know nothing of her between then and now

Can you tell me a little bit about her, her headspace? Yeah, I think she's a little, I think she's a little lost

I think she's really broken. I think that she's just trying to make sense of what's just happened to her

Also, to really think about it, honestly, she's gone through something really, really, really traumatic

And trying to pick up the pieces with her, you know, what's left of the fireflies

And I think that that rawness and the vulnerability that we are seeing

I think that's how she developed that tough exterior and that sort of almost intimidating exterior

that can lead a bit like harsh almost. We thought it was important for the audience to understand who she was

and to understand what her circumstance was, what it was that she wanted to do and why

And one of the things we also understood about Caitlin is how instant you connect to her as a performer

It doesn't matter what she's doing, whether she's playing a villain, which she's doing rather convincingly right now on another show

or whether she's playing somebody that is ambiguous, a villain, a hero, hard to tell on our show

but you connect. So we had a lot of discussions about, okay, there's information that is unchanged

and completely consistent with the game, but where we give it to people and how

that's what we can play around with. And so that's what we did here in season two
