Sports Betting Research - The Secret of Professional Sports Bettors - MoneyBall Technique

I read a quote this week which was "Deconstruction creates knowledge. Recombination creates value." This video dives into this sports betting idea and how it is the underlying philosophy of most professional sports bettors. The video presents a view of how deconstructing sports into each feature or statistic to learn about the sport helps , but the real value is produced by recombining the deconstructed parts of the sport to create a rating or model that can make money. I dive into a simplified example in horse racing, but this could be applied to any sport, on how to break out a sport correctly so that the features which are created can easily be fed back into a machine learning model in a way that limits overfitting and backfitting of the results. The book and movie "Moneyball" shares similar techniques in the way that they approached sabermetrics to create value in the team composition and build a profitable baseball team. Sports punters take these same tactics but instead of trying to build a team, they use the concepts to find the real odds of a sporting contest and can back the team which shows value.
