60 million years ago, a giant snake
0:02
terrorized what is now the Yucatan
0:04
Peninsula. Hi everyone, this is your
0:07
host Malcolm Walker on Wild but True and
0:09
today we are going to talk about
0:10
Titanoboa.
0:12
Titanoboa was a giant snake that lived
0:14
in what is now the Yucatan Peninsula of
0:16
Mexico. Now this was during the age of
0:18
the dinosaurs.
0:20
However, it was not a dinosaur. Snakes
0:22
are reptiles and dinosaurs were
0:24
arosaurs.
0:25
Today, there are many different kinds of
0:27
arshasaurs alive, including crocodiles
0:29
and birds. Back then, all of the
0:31
arshosaurs were terrible lizards. Hey,
0:34
now the Yucatan Peninsula was once
0:36
covered in a tropical rainforest, but
0:39
today much of it is desert, so it's hard
0:41
to imagine what it looked like 60
0:43
million years ago, but this ancient
0:45
rainforest was home to Titanoboa. The
0:48
first fossils of this giant serpent were
0:49
discovered in 1978, and since then, more
0:52
have been found. These fossils tell us
0:55
that Titanoboa was one of the largest
0:56
land predators that ever lived. How big,
0:58
you ask? Well, this snake could reach
1:01
lengths of 42 feet and weighed over a
1:03
ton. That's bigger than any predator
1:05
that lives in the Yucatan today,
1:07
including the American crocodile. And
1:09
don't forget, crocodiles can grow pretty
1:12
big. The largest crocodile that ever
1:14
lived, the largest crocodile today, the
1:16
saltwater crocodile, can reach lengths
1:19
of 23 feet. To put Titanoboa's size into
1:22
perspective, you could fit four of these
1:25
enormous crocodiles inside of one of
1:27
those 42 foot long titanoboa.
1:29
So, what did Titanobo eat? Well, because
1:31
it was so large, it could eat almost
1:33
anything. It likely prayed on other
1:36
large reptiles, including crocodiles.
1:39
Imagine being a small crocodile minding
1:40
your own business. Swimming around in
1:43
the shallow water looking for fish to
1:45
eat, when suddenly a giant snake
1:47
swallows you whole. That's what life was
1:49
like if you were a reptile 60 million
1:51
years ago. It also likely ate large
1:53
mammals and even other giant snakes. We
1:56
know that Titanobo ate other giant
1:58
snakes because they have stomach stones.
2:00
These are stones that they swallow to
2:02
help with digestion. And these stones
2:04
were likely used to crack the skulls of
2:06
smaller snakes.
2:08
Now, how do we know that Titanoba was
2:10
such a ferocious predator? It had teeth.
2:13
And not just any teeth, serrated teeth,
2:15
just like a crocodile or a shark. These
2:18
would have been great for crushing bone.
2:20
Its jaws could exert a bite force of
2:22
over 1,000 lbs per square in. And don't
2:25
forget, this snake was over 40 ft long.
2:27
So that's a lot of powerful jaws working
2:30
to crush its prey. Tichobo went extinct
2:33
around 60 million years ago, but we
2:35
don't know exactly why. It could be that
2:37
there was a mass extinction that wiped
2:39
out not only Titanoboa, but all of the
2:42
other large animals that it prayed on.
2:44
Maybe there was a sudden change in
2:46
climate that killed off all of the giant
2:47
reptiles. Whatever the reason, Titanoboa
2:51
is not the only giant snake that has
2:52
ever lived. There are others throughout
2:54
history that rival this behemoth. One of
2:57
the most famous is Gigantaphus Garcine.
3:01
It lived in North Africa about 40
3:03
million years ago and reached lengths of
3:05
55 ft. That's the size of a school bus.
3:08
Another giant snake is the Titan python.
3:11
The snake also reached lengths of about
3:13
55 ft and lived in South America about
3:15
60 million years ago. But it wasn't just
3:17
the length of these snakes that was
3:19
impressive. They were also really thick.
3:22
The Titan python was about 4 ft in
3:24
diameter while the Titan oboa was about
3:27
3 ft in diameter. That's the size of a
3:30
doorway. So, what would a giant snake
3:32
like this eat? Well, it likely ate large
3:34
mammals and other giant snakes. It could
3:36
go either way. But let's be honest, who
3:38
wouldn't want to eat a giant snake?
