Hi, Malcolm Walker again with Bug Facts.
0:04
Today we re talking about a spider that
0:06
s a nightmare for people who like to
0:09
sleep with their mouths open. That's
0:11
right, we're talking about sack spiders.
0:14
And there's a few different species in
0:16
this group that we were going to cover
0:17
in this series. So, they're found all
0:19
over the world except for Antarctica.
0:22
But again, today we're just focusing on
0:24
the southern sack spider. But today
0:27
we're talking about one of the most
0:28
common ones which is the southern sack
0:30
spider also known as cheranththeium and
0:32
clissum. They're also tan colored which
0:35
helps them blend in with kind of the
0:36
umber or the sienna tones of our walls
0:38
and our floors and things like that. And
0:41
those help them to sense vibrations and
0:43
maybe even sense chemicals in the air.
0:46
But you got to be really careful if
0:47
you're trying to identify these guys. If
0:49
you kill the spider, those hairs come
0:51
off and it's really hard to get them to
0:53
stick back on. So, if you can, you want
0:55
to just observe these guys without
0:56
killing them and then let them go on
0:58
their merry way. So, it makes them
1:00
really easy to hide. A lot of people
1:02
mistake them for other house spiders,
1:04
especially cobwebs. Cobwebs are a
1:06
similar color and size. You might just
1:08
be snacking on a nice little worm and it
1:10
might not taste very good or you might
1:11
just get a little bite that you don't
1:12
expect. And although they do belong to
1:15
the same order, they're not actually
1:16
related super closely.
1:19
They're in the same order, Arina.
1:20
They're in the same class. They're in
1:22
the same film, but they're not actually
1:24
closely related. Now, these guys are in
1:27
the family clubite. And in this family,
1:30
you have about 2,000 species spread
1:32
across six continents. If you happen to
1:35
get bitten by a sac spider, you might
1:37
notice some symptoms from the bite. It
1:40
might be a little bit painful, and
1:42
that's because their venom is cytotoxic.
1:44
If you have any questions or comments,
1:46
please put them below. We'd love to
1:48
answer them for you. And if you have any
1:50
suggestions for future videos, what bugs
1:53
we should cover, what arachnids we
1:55
should cover, anything like that, please
1:58
let us know. We'll see you next time
1:59
with another bug. So, it can actually
2:02
destroy cells and cause lesions at the
2:04
sight of the bite. So, if you get bitten
2:06
by one of these, it might leave a lesion
2:08
that's painful and it could even last
2:10
for a couple of days. Now, thankfully,
2:13
these are very, very rare. There's only
2:15
been a handful of cases where somebody
2:16
was severely affected by a sack spider
2:19
bite. And it sounds like it's pretty
2:20
rare even for them to get into your
2:22
skin. They usually just kind of latch
2:24
onto your skin and not actually inject
2:26
any venom into you. But still, you might
2:29
notice some pain or swelling or redness
2:31
around the area of the bite. But it's
2:33
not common for these to be
2:34
life-threatening.
2:36
So, if you do get bitten by one of these
2:38
spiders, it's probably not going to be
2:41
too serious, but it could be a little
2:42
bit painful. As far as behavior goes,
2:45
sack spiders aren't really aggressive.
2:47
They're not going to seek you out, but
2:49
they've been known to bite. Usually, it
2:51
happens when they reined with you and
2:53
you accidentally put your mouth open. Or
2:55
you rewearing clothing made of natural
2:58
fibers like cotton and the spider crawls
3:00
up onto the fabric and then latches onto
3:03
your skin. You feel that bite. It could
3:06
be painful enough to wake you up, but
3:07
most people just kind of brush it off
3:08
and go back to sleep. And the spider
3:11
will continue on its merry way. But
3:13
yeah, they're not aggressive. They don't
3:15
want to bite you. They read just kind of
3:17
doing their thing and you happen to be
3:19
in the wrong place at the wrong time. As
3:21
far as appearance goes, these guys are
3:23
pretty small. They're only about 3 mm in
3:25
length. So, they're pretty tiny. And
3:28
sack spiders are actually quite hairy.
3:30
You look at them under the microscope
3:32
and you can see that they have these
3:33
little hairs all over their body. So,
3:36
next time you're lying in bed, keep your
3:38
mouth open. If you enjoyed this video,
