I'm about to show you the easiest way to master the crochet wattle stitch
0:03
and if you crochet your swatch in cotton yarn you will end up with a beautiful dish cloth
0:07
This stitch also has the most wonderful texture making it a great choice for baby blankets
0:13
For the purpose of this tutorial I'm going to be using a four millimeter hook
0:16
and some double knit yarn. The written pattern does include instructions for using
0:21
aran or walsted or a fingering four ply yarn so I'm going to make a small swatch here to
0:27
show you how to crochet the wattle stitch. I'm going to start off with a slip knot on my hook
0:35
and then you need to chain a multiple of three plus two. 44 is a good amount for a dish cloth
0:43
One, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three and two extra stitches
0:54
So to start off we're going to put a single crochet in the third chain from hook. That's one, two, three
1:04
single crochet in there, chain one and then a double crochet in the same stitch
1:16
We're next going to skip the next two stitches and put a single crochet in the following stitch
1:24
chain one and double crochet. I'm going to repeat this across until we get to the last two stitches
1:36
Then we're going to skip one and finish off with half double crochet in that last stitch
1:43
We will then chain one and turn our work. Now from now on we're going to be working into the
1:49
chain spaces instead of into the tops of the stitches so you've got the double crochet here
1:53
and a single crochet and then the chain one just there and in the middle that's where we're going
1:57
to go next. So put a single crochet in that chain space, chain one, double crochet
2:06
in that chain space, chain one, double crochet and then we look for the next chain space, put a single crochet in there, chain one
2:23
double crochet and we're going to repeat this across until we get to the last group of stitches
2:29
at the end you'll finish with a single crochet in that chain one space, chain one, double crochet
2:38
and then a half double crochet into that chain one from the beginning. Now that last row you can just repeat as many times as you need to to get your project as long
2:49
as you want it to be. Now if you want to change colour you want to do that before your last step
2:55
on the last stitch so I'll just pull out that last half double crochet so what you will do is you will yarn over, you'll put your hook into the stitch
3:07
yarn over, purple loop and then instead of yarning over and pulling through all three to finish off
3:11
that half double crochet you'll pick up your next colour and finish the stitch off with that colour
3:25
And then chain one and turn and then continue with single crochet in the next space, chain one, double crochet
3:39
single crochet in the next space, chain one, double crochet and so on. So I've worked another row
3:49
and I'm just going to show you how you can carry the yarn outside of the work if you're doing stripes of two colours. So we're going to change colour again, yarn over, hook into the stitch
4:00
and then I'm just going to drop the current colour and pick up the new colour, yarn over and finish
4:05
off that half double crochet with the new colour, chain one and turn and you can just keep doing
4:11
that swapping colours every couple of rows. If you're working with more than two colours I
4:16
recommend you fasten off after each row otherwise the edges can get quite bulky. If you need any
