Hi, Catherine here from Lullaby Lodge. In this video, I'm going to show you how to crochet a simple shell edging
0:06
We're going to cover how to add this directly to a granny square and how to add it to any type of blanket edge
0:13
Okay, let's start with working directly onto a granny square. You need to work your shell edging on an odd numbered round
0:21
So if we count, we've got one, two, three, four, five, six rounds to the granny square
0:26
So the next round will be the seventh round, which is an odd number. okay so I'm going to put a slip knot on my hook and I'm going to go straight in with a single crochet in this space here next to the corner and now we're going to start working into the corner space we're going to put nine double crochets
0:49
that's one two eight and nine and then we're going to straight away
0:58
into the next space is put single crochet. So in the corner we've got some extra stitches there just to make it go around the corner easier
1:09
So in the next space we're going to put seven double crochets
1:19
One two three four five six and seven and the next space it going to be a single crochet so really you just going to alternate this across your granny square so it seven double crochets then a single crochet seven double crochets and a single crochet and then in each corner you going to have nine double crochets okay so I worked all the way around the granny square and
1:48
I'm simply going to finish by putting a slip stitch into this first single crochet
1:54
And then you can fasten off and weave in your ends. Next I'm going to show you how to add this border to any blanket edge
2:01
So I've got another granny square here. Now when you're working this border into directly into stitches rather into the spaces
2:08
you need to have across each edge a multiple of nine plus your two corner stitches
2:15
So in order to get the correct number of stitches you'll need to on your single crochet round either decrease or increase your stitches along each side until you
2:25
have a multiple of nine plus two i'm also going to show you how to what to do if you can't be
2:31
bothered to do that okay so i've got a slip knot on my hook and i'm going to go straight into this
2:37
center corner stitch with a single crochet i going to put another single crochet in the same space And then I going to work a single crochet into each stitch across this edge
2:57
I'm going to keep going until I get to the next corner. In the next corner, I will put three single crochets into the center stitch
3:03
and I'll do that the same in each corner. Okay, so I've worked all the way around
3:07
and I'm going to put one more single crochet into this on a stitch. and slip stitch to that first single crochet
3:16
So now we're ready to add our shells. We're going to chain three
3:20
This counts as our first double crochet. I'm going to put eight more double crochet into that same stitch
3:27
to make that corner shell. Okay, there we go
3:38
We've got nine double crochets in there now. Now, I know that along this edge, I have two extra stitches
3:45
You need a multiple of nine plus the two corner stitches, but I have two extra stitches
3:50
So what I'm going to do is here I'm going to skip three stitches
3:54
One, two, three. Normally we're going to only skip two because it's the corner. We can just about manage to skip an extra stitch
4:01
So I'm going to put a single crochet into that fourth stitch
4:09
Then I going to skip two stitches and put a shell into the next stitch
4:18
So the shell along the edges is seven double crochet. Then I'm going to skip two and a single crochet in the next stitch
4:30
So how you can see the shells are forming. So we're going to continue doing this
4:35
skip two stitches, put a shell in the next stitch, skip two and a single crochet, and then we're back to the corner
4:41
And here we're going to skip three again, and then put another corner shell, which is the nine double crochets into that corner
4:48
And we'll repeat this all the way around our square. So I've just done the second corner here, and remember, each time you are at the corner, I'm skipping three stitches, and then are three stitches before this corner
5:03
Now, if you have the correct number of stitches, you won't need to do that. You'll just skip two stitches
5:06
This is just because I needed to reduce by two stitches. Okay, so I've worked all the way around with my shells
5:14
And I'm just going to finish by putting a slip stitch into the top of this chain three here
5:19
just to join to that corner shell. And then you can fasten off and weave in your ends and you're done
5:27
