The DC Extended Universe has been criticized for being too dark, but pretty much everyone who saw Shazam! acknowledged that it took the DCEU in a much lighter, funnier direction. It even has kids as its heroes, but that's not to say the film didn't have plenty of things for the adults in the audience to notice as well.
