Canadian vlogger Christopher 'Chris Must List' Hughes has been granted permission to leave the country temporarily and return before his next court appearance. Master Margaret Sookraj-Goswami approved the request from Hughes' attorney, Pamela Elder SC, citing the lengthy delays in the criminal justice system that disadvantage foreign nationals.
The court agreed to return Hughes’ passport and lift the reporting conditions attached to his $100,000 bail. Hughes must return on June 12 and re-submit his passport to the court for his scheduled appearance the following day.
Elder compared Hughes' situation to the Piarco Airport inquiry, where foreigners involved were allowed to travel freely. She argued that keeping Hughes in the country under the leniency of his previous attorney, Criston Williams, was not ideal.
The Piarco case involved millions of dollars, whereas Hughes' case, which carries a $3,000 fine or up to two years imprisonment, is far less severe. Hughes, 45, has pleaded not guilty to publishing a seditious document.
During the initial hearing, state attorney Danielle Thompson awaited instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on proceeding with the case. Following discussions with DPP Roger Gaspard, the state opted for a summary charge, which entails a lighter penalty.
Wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with "freedom is a must," Hughes expressed his desire to attend to family matters before returning to face the courts.
