Buckles are more than something a cowboy wears, they come with stories! We’re sharing the funny, frustrating, and meaningful stories behind the buckles we’ve won, from Kent’s first bull-riding buckle at 11 years old to the one he should have won and Shannon’s first chuck wagon competition buckle. We also dive into behind the scenes of the curious cowboy and rodeo culture, unwritten rules, competition, buckle bunnies, and how the meaning of a buckle has changed over the years.

I think one of the best fights I ever
0:01
seen in my life
0:02
>> [music]
0:02
>> was at a rodeo between two buckle
0:04
bunnies.
0:05
>> Between the two bunnies?
0:07
>> Yeah.
0:07
>> Ooh.
0:08
>> of them
0:08
>> See, this is the kind of stuff I want.
0:11
>> [laughter]
0:12
>> And most of the time if they hollered
0:14
fight somewhere, I usually just look for
0:15
the door and get ready to leave.
0:17
>> Oh.
0:17
>> You know, because you never knew what
0:18
was going to happen, but it was very
0:20
rare.
0:23
>> [music]
0:26
>> Howdy, my name is Kent [music] Rollins.
0:29
I've been a cowboy and chuck wagon cook
0:31
for over 30 years, cooking [music] for
0:33
ranches all across America. You might
0:35
have seen me on the Food Network or
0:36
alongside [music] my beautiful wife
0:38
Shannon in our YouTube show, where we
0:40
share cowboy cooking from the trail. But
0:42
now we're going to take you behind the
0:44
scenes to real campfire conversations.
0:47
Join us as we share humor, cowboy
0:49
wisdom, and stories full of history,
0:51
heart, faith, and of course, a little
0:54
fire. So, grab you a cup of coffee, pull
0:56
up a chair, and welcome to the podcast.
1:00
>> [music]
1:04
>> Hey, thank y'all for joining us today,
1:06
and it is a great day above the grass,
1:08
Shannon. You know what?
1:09
>> It is, and
1:10
>> of people used to ask me, "What do you
1:12
mean by that?"
1:13
>> It's a great day above the grass?
1:14
>> Yeah, isn't it pleasant when you're
1:15
laying in the grass and they're throwing
1:17
a shovel full of dirt in your face? You
1:18
know, so every day is a great day above
1:21
the grass. We thank y'all so much from
1:23
the bottom of our hearts.
1:25
And we've had so many comments.
1:28
>> Yes.
1:29
>> You guys I just wanted to kick this
1:31
episode off. You guys have been so, so
1:33
sweet with the comments on the podcast,
1:36
and so I wanted to grab just a couple of
1:38
them. This one super impressed me. Okay,
1:41
so this is from Clay Davis 6895, and
1:44
this was on I think this was on our
1:46
episode about where we were talking
1:48
about our brand and like how we got to
1:51
over 7 million followers, and it says,
1:53
"I agree with being consistent. I've
1:56
watched y'all's videos since I was 15
1:58
years old and I'm 25 now.
2:00
>> Whoa.
2:01
>> That's crazy. I can't wait till Sunday
2:03
knowing there will be another coffee
2:04
hour and I've had plenty of compliments
2:06
on recipes I've made of yours and I
2:08
always tell them I learned it from an
2:09
old cowboy friend. I'll always be
2:11
grateful for Cowboy Kent Rollins.
2:13
>> That is sweet.
2:14
>> Like 15 also he's 10. That's a 10-year
2:18
like strict following. That's that's
2:19
awesome.
2:20
>> It is good.
2:21
>> I've got one too.
2:23
I think this is a good message for
2:24
everybody.
2:25
This is from S. Stevenson 24. You say
2:29
it's not perfect sometimes. Your fans
2:31
and family don't care and probably have
2:33
never noticed. What matters is we got a
2:36
chance to visit with you and that is a
2:39
treasure.
2:40
So.
2:41
>> You know we've always wanted people to
2:42
know that whatever we're doing whether
2:44
it be a podcast or our cooking channel,
2:46
it's not just about cooking.
2:48
>> Yeah.
2:49
>> You know that we tell you at the end of
2:51
every episode and we mean it dearly,
2:52
you're not fans, you're family. Guys.
2:55
And as I look through the comments and
2:56
tried to pull one out over the last six
2:58
or seven weeks that I there was
3:00
thousands that just touched your heart.
3:02
>> Okay and I want everybody know because I
3:04
think this is very important. Kent goes
3:07
through and reads all of the YouTube
3:10
comments. Now he does not reply to all
3:12
of them. That would be a little too
3:13
crazy but I just want you to know that
3:16
we see your comments and we hear them
3:19
and so they are acknowledged.
3:22
>> Yes and they
3:22
>> And there is one gal that and it's funny
3:24
because you know I'll be cleaning dishes
3:26
or doing whatever and Kent's always like
3:28
going through and he's like, "Oh, Roger
3:31
had his 20th anniversary." And I'm like,
3:33
"Oh, isn't that great for Roger?" Or I
3:35
So even though you don't know it we're
3:37
sharing in your little celebrations too
3:39
and there's one gal. Is her name Kate?
3:40
>> Kate G and I can't remember the last of
3:42
it. It's a number.
3:43
>> So Kate, if you're watching, I love all
3:46
of your comments because she always
3:47
calls our dogs woo bits.
3:49
>> Yeah. Be sure and give love to the woo
3:51
bits.
3:52
>> great. So, anyway
3:53
>> It's uh
3:54
you know, Shannon
3:55
in one of our previous episodes, one we
3:57
did about my dad and cancer
3:59
and you had told everyone, "Hey,
4:02
leave us a comment. What was something
4:04
that was really a favorite of yours that
4:07
either your dad did or your brother did
4:09
or a friend did that you always
4:11
remembered?"
4:12
>> There like a characteristic of theirs,
4:13
yeah.
4:14
>> And uh
4:15
I'm just telling you everybody left a
4:17
comment.
4:18
>> Oh, that's sweet. Yep.
4:19
>> And uh then you told them, "Hey, go back
4:21
and go through them comments." And
4:23
that's what I love to see. When you get
4:24
a long thread of comments and people are
4:27
are visiting with each other.
4:29
>> that.
4:29
>> That is family and that is what it's
4:31
about.
4:32
>> Now, we're just going to jump right into
4:33
this episode and I had this wild idea
4:36
about buckles. Because in the cowboy
4:40
culture and rodeo culture, a buckle
4:42
isn't just a buckle. And there have been
4:44
buckles that you've won
4:46
that you should have won. There's been
4:48
buckles that you've even given away.
4:51
And I thought like this is kind of a
4:55
behind-the-scenes culture of like rodeo
4:57
and cowboy life and what the buckle
5:00
represents.
5:01
>> Well, a buckle really when you wear it
5:04
it's sort of like having a badge in a
5:05
way pinned on. It's something that's
5:08
you've brought about by skill
5:11
uh by patience and some people even I
5:14
think go about it as it is a status
5:16
symbol. You know, of what you have
5:18
achieved.
5:19
>> Could be.
5:20
>> But I think we need to go way back, you
5:23
know, to the invention
5:24
>> Can I do the little do do do do do do?
5:28
>> [laughter]
5:28
>> That's the little the little flashback.
5:31
>> know what that is, but
5:32
>> So, the let let Okay, let's just start.
5:35
Tell us about the very first buckle
5:38
you'd ever won.
5:40
>> I was 11 years old.
5:42
Carter, Oklahoma on a Sunday afternoon
5:44
and Randy went up there, my oldest
5:46
brother, for a bull ride. I just went.
5:50
I didn't know they was having
5:52
steer riding for kids under 12.
5:56
>> Okay, cuz I was going to say bull riding
5:58
for 11-year-old seems pretty crazy.
6:01
>> Yeah.
6:01
>> Because you did you were a bull rider.
6:03
>> That's what I thought I was at the time.
6:05
>> when your career really took off.
6:06
>> Yeah.
6:07
And uh so Randy told me said I used to
6:10
$2.50 entry fee for this. He said I'm
6:13
going to go ahead and put you in it.
6:14
And uh I didn't even have bull rope at
6:16
the time. We borrowed one from somebody
6:18
to go around this old steer and
6:20
they they did put a flank strap on him,
6:22
which is around his flank, which makes
6:24
him buck, you know.
6:25
>> Around his like chest area kind of?
6:27
>> No, his back back in the back flank.
6:29
>> Oh, okay.
6:30
>> And uh turned him out and he bucked
6:32
pretty good, but
6:33
man, I thought I was the bestest bull
6:35
rider in the whole wide world. And end
6:37
up winning winning that buckle. It was
6:40
I'd say 3 in in diameter, you know. And
6:43
had picture of a little bull on there
6:45
with the guy riding him. It was Comstock
6:48
silver was what was stamped on the back
6:50
and then it was sort of
6:52
brass inlaid and had champion bull rider
6:55
on it.
6:56
>> Okay, so oh, wow.
6:58
>> Yeah.
6:58
>> Do you remember how many entries there
7:00
were in your
7:01
>> There was probably 20 30 kids in it, you
7:03
know.
7:03
>> Okay, so this was a legitimate
7:04
>> they was judging it. Had them rodeo
7:06
judges out there.
7:07
>> Can you tell me like at that point you
7:10
had not entered anything?
7:12
>> No, this was my first rodeo.
7:14
>> So were you thinking like, okay, I'm a
7:15
pretty big deal now?
7:17
>> Well, I think if people would go back
7:18
and watch previous episodes, they'll
7:19
know that I had a great teacher in
7:21
Randy, you
7:22
>> Randy tried to kill you every chance he
7:23
got.
7:24
>> Yes, he did. But not only did I win that
7:27
buckle,
7:28
I won $5. A $5 bill.
7:31
>> Now, to an 11-year-old back then, that
7:34
had to have been like hitting it big.
7:36
>> I carried that thing in the first ever
7:38
bill folder I ever had till the paper
7:40
wore out.
7:42
>> You couldn't even
7:42
>> even spend it?
7:43
>> No, I just I'd pull it out every once in
7:45
a while, I'd look at it, and I'd look at
7:46
that buckle, you know, and I'd think
7:48
stick my chest out like a little banty
7:50
rooster, and I'm thinking, you know, I'm
7:52
good. And it wasn't too long till Randy
7:53
took me to another and then thumped my
7:55
head in the ground, and I'm thinking, I
7:56
don't know about this.
7:58
>> So, what was it What did it feel like
7:59
when you got that you were presented
8:01
that buckle?
8:02
>> I thought I was I'd accomplished
8:04
everything there was in life at that
8:05
time.
8:06
>> Oh, wow. You're like, done I'm done.
8:07
>> I mean, I was a little bitty scrawny kid
8:10
that had a burr haircut, you know, had
8:12
me a straw hat, and pair of old whack-me
8:15
boots with some spurs that Randy'd give
8:16
me, and
8:17
I walked around there all day long cuz
8:20
it was before the bull riding that Randy
8:22
and them had. I was proud as a brand new
8:23
peacock. I mean, I was I thought I had
8:26
hit the big time.
8:28
>> Did it then give you the itch to like
8:31
compete and to chase the buckle more?
8:36
>> I think in a way, but Randy said, you
8:38
know, you you made that look pretty easy
8:41
on that old steer. And when I was 13
8:43
years old, I remember getting in a
8:44
junior bull riding that he'd put me in
8:47
in Sentinel, Oklahoma, and uh
8:49
they weren't no different in the bulls
8:51
Randy's riding what I was riding.
8:53
>> Oh, really?
8:53
>> No. Got my head thumped in the ground
8:55
for about three or four weeks in a row,
8:58
and I'm thinking like, I'm just going to
9:00
go back to carrying some of them plastic
9:02
guns and holsters and thinking I'm a
9:03
cowboy.
9:04
>> [laughter]
9:04
>> Hard on my head it was, you know. But
9:08
belt buckles been around a long time.
9:10
For years, you just seen a buckle that
9:11
was square and had a pin in it, and you
9:13
just cinched your belt to it, you know,
9:15
and carried a holster on it or anything
9:18
else.
9:18
>> So, it wasn't like a symbol, or it
9:20
didn't have like a message on it like
9:21
they do now, like world champion, or it
9:24
was just
9:24
>> the first
9:25
first buckles that they that I
9:27
researched and that they give away was
9:28
in 1923.
9:30
>> That was the first time?
9:31
>> Yeah, at rodeo in California.
9:33
>> Oh.
9:33
>> And but before and it was nickel and
9:36
silver and brass mostly, you know, what
9:39
they were using then. But before that,
9:42
if you won a rodeo or something, they
9:43
was giving you like maybe a pistol or a
9:45
pocket watch, you know?
9:47
>> Oh.
9:47
>> I would have traded the first buckle I
9:49
won for a pistol. I thought that'd been
9:51
pretty good. But World War II come along
9:54
and there was really a shortage of
9:56
metal. So buckles really took a a halt
9:59
at that time.
10:00
>> okay.
10:01
>> You know, and if you even go back
10:02
further than that, you know, the with
10:05
the invention of Levi's in the 1870s,
10:08
they had belt loops and belt loops had
10:10
not been common on something.
10:12
>> Was Levi the first to
10:14
>> know if they were the very first to put
10:16
belt loops.
10:16
>> But made it maybe more popular?
10:18
>> And and all the gold mine people wore
10:20
them out there. And it sort of
10:21
>> before that was it suspenders?
10:23
>> Yeah, and it sort of did away with
10:24
suspenders.
10:25
>> Oh.
10:26
>> And now that we had a belt loops and we
10:28
had a belt, let's put some buckles on
10:30
there.
10:30
>> Let's get a little bling.
10:32
>> And I mean,
10:33
>> [music]
10:33
>> you see buckles now that are I mean,
10:36
they're for a $100 to $100,000 buckles.
10:39
>> [music]
10:46
>> You know, Shannon, we're out in a lot of
10:48
conditions. A lot of heat, lot of wind,
10:51
lot of cold.
10:52
And really our face takes a beating.
10:56
>> It's really hard on your skin. That's
10:58
why this may surprise you, but for us
11:01
skin care is really important.
11:03
>> Yeah.
11:04
>> That's why we really like One Skin. They
11:07
have been doing this for a long time. A
11:09
bunch of research goes into this and
11:11
that's what's really important to me.
11:13
They have um researched a lot of
11:14
peptides, especially their proprietary
11:17
OS-1 peptide. That's really hard
11:20
hitting. It's anti-aging and it's going
11:23
to create a barrier on your skin.
11:25
Moisturizing is super important. So
11:27
that's why we love the One Skin.
11:30
>> Yeah, it's it's made a made a great for
11:32
a long time. I I was thinking that you
11:35
don't need to do nothing. You just work
11:36
hard and get by.
11:37
>> Kent
11:38
>> I started using it, you know, it took a
11:40
while, but I could see the difference.
11:42
>> Yeah, I think especially for men, you
11:44
don't you guys don't think about skin
11:46
care. But it's important for you as
11:48
well. Just to get the moisture. You're
11:50
out in mother nature. So, you got to
11:53
give your skin a little help.
11:54
>> That's right. Born from over 10 years of
11:57
longevity research, One Skin is helping
12:00
you unlock your healthiest skin now as
12:02
you age. For a limited time, try One

12:22

12:24
them that we sent you.
12:30
>> Now, but that first buckle that you got
12:34
you actually gave it away.
12:36
>> Yeah, you know, I I carried that buckle
12:38
was in a drawer at my house forever and
12:40
ever. And I I can remember the first
12:42
belt I had on it. It would probably fit
12:44
around Snauzer and be about the same
12:46
size, you know. But there's a dear
12:48
friend of ours, Sherry, who helps run
12:51
part of our business.
12:52
>> Mhm.
12:52
>> And uh
12:53
I remember Quayd was going to be in the
12:56
sheep riding.
12:57
>> Quayd is her son.
12:58
>> Yeah, he is probably what?
13:00
Six at the time?
13:01
>> time, maybe five or six?
13:03
>> And he was going to go to rodeo and ride
13:05
one of them sheep, you know.
13:06
And I told him I said, "Boy, you need a
13:07
buckle."
13:08
>> If you guys haven't seen this, the
13:10
mutton busting
13:12
g- just look it up on YouTube. It's
13:13
hilarious. These kids are like holding
13:16
on for their lives on these sheep, and
13:17
it's great.
13:18
>> So, I give him that bull riding buckle.
13:20
And when I did, you could see his eyes
13:22
just they just shined, you know, it and
13:25
it
13:26
>> it just blessed me. Made me feel good.
13:28
>> The buckle almost got a little revival,
13:30
right? You got that blessing when you
13:32
got it and then when you gave it away.
13:33
>> Yeah, and it it I think it meant maybe
13:36
more to me when I got to give it to
13:38
Quaid than when I actually won it, you
13:40
know, because Sherry would send me
13:42
pictures. He'd have it on, you know,
13:43
wearing it at school. So,
13:45
Quaid, if you're out there watching,
13:46
buddy, put that buckle on.
13:49
>> [laughter]
13:49
>> Okay, so
13:50
it's the buckle that you first won.
13:52
>> Yeah.
13:53
>> But I I believe that there's a time that
13:56
you should have won a buckle and didn't.
14:00
>> Yeah, I mean that's
14:01
>> Now, I don't want to like bring up bad
14:03
>> That sort of stuff can make you crawl
14:05
pretty hard, you know. It's probably
14:06
1985,
14:08
'6 long in there at Wellington, Texas.
14:11
There's no stock contractor Freddy
14:12
Cordell and I knew his bulls well. He
14:14
was from Childress. Been on
14:16
>> At this point, how long had you been in
14:19
been bull riding and competing?
14:21
>> Competing hard about 10 years, 15.
14:24
>> got to this point?
14:25
>> Yeah.
14:25
>> To Oh, okay.
14:26
>> And and making a good living at it. And
14:29
he had an old black bull and I'd seen
14:30
him go many times.
14:32
You could just It was He was
14:35
honest and he would repeat the same time
14:38
every time.
14:39
>> Okay, now when you say a bull is honest,
14:41
what does that mean?
14:43
>> He He going to have the same trip every
14:44
time out of the chute, you know.
14:46
>> He's not going to like vary from what he
14:48
does. It's like the systematic
14:51
>> And you And they won bull riding on him
14:52
all time, you know. And uh
14:54
>> Well, what was his system?
14:56
>> Oh, he just
14:57
jump out of there, jump and kick really
14:59
high, three rounds to the right, jump
15:02
out, three rounds to the left, make
15:03
about two jumps and then he go two more
15:05
to right and the whistle blow.
15:07
>> And that was like pretty standard?
15:09
>> Oh, I'd seen it 50 times in in in a
15:11
year, you know.
15:14
>> And when I got him, I'm thinking,
15:15
I ain't never got on this bull, I ain't
15:17
never drawn him, but this is this is
15:19
what I wanted, you know, this Saturday
15:21
night, the last night of the rodeo, 80
15:24
points was winning the bull riding and
15:25
I've seen people win the bull riding on
15:27
him scoring 83, 84 points, you know, and
15:29
I'm thinking
15:30
just bear down, make a hand, you know.
15:33
And O.J. Johnson pulled my rope and he
15:35
said, "You got this, buddy." And he
15:36
jumped out there three to right and I
15:38
mean they had big old high jumps. And it
15:40
just felt like you're sitting in a
15:41
rocking chair. Everything was right, you
15:43
know.
15:43
>> So, I'm wondering like when you are
15:45
riding a bull, I mean, it seems so crazy
15:47
fast. It's 8 seconds, right? And there's
15:50
a rhythm to it. Do you feel like you get
15:52
into
15:54
like a peaceful place when everything
15:56
clicks?
15:57
>> When everything's right, it's just like
15:59
riding a bicycle.
16:01
It's just
16:01
>> It's smooth?
16:02
>> Yeah.
16:03
>> That's
16:03
>> You just you just feel it, you know. And
16:05
there there's motion, you ride with your
16:07
knees, you ride with your feet, you pull
16:08
with your arm, you know, you got balance
16:11
with your free hand.
16:12
And when he made them three three rounds
16:14
to the right and jumped out of it and
16:17
started to the left, I'm thinking, we
16:19
get out of here and he's about two more
16:20
jumps.
16:22
Buzzer.
16:23
You know, he went to the left and I mean
16:25
I even felt so good that I went spurring
16:27
him a little. And he jumped out of there
16:28
and he made two big old jumps back over
16:30
there and went back to the right and I'm
16:32
thinking, where is the buzzer? And he
16:35
just kept on going to the right.
16:37
And he had never been this long with
16:39
somebody on him and then he just sort of
16:41
just
16:42
way up in the air, nose dive down on the
16:45
ground and sort of rolled a shoulder and
16:47
dumped me off. And when I got up, I
16:49
immediately just looked to the announcer
16:51
stand.
16:52
>> Because there's no buzzer.
16:54
>> There was no horn.
16:55
>> How how long So, it's an 8-second ride
16:57
till the buzzer. How long do you think
16:59
you were on it?
16:59
>> At least 10 or 11.
17:01
>> Which that's a long time in in bull
17:03
riding world.
17:03
>> I thought it was. This back then, judges
17:05
didn't even have no pocket watches with
17:07
them, no stopwatches. You know, you used
17:08
to a judge you. When I right before I
17:10
quit, all the judges had a stopwatch.
17:13
And they Sometimes if the timer was
17:15
wrong up
17:16
in the announcer stand
17:18
them judges already had it. They didn't
17:20
have one.
17:21
And I looked up there and we'll just
17:23
call this guy's name George cuz that's
17:26
what it was.
17:26
>> Are we protecting the
17:27
>> No, we're not.
17:29
>> Oh, it was his name?
17:30
>> It was George and
17:31
>> Do you have his number, address, and
17:32
social security so we can look him up?
17:34
>> find him no more, no ma'am.
17:36
And he'd be running the clock and he'd
17:38
be I mean before he'd be leaning out
17:41
over the top of that announcer stand and
17:43
have that that horn, you know, and he'd
17:45
have the watch and when 8 seconds he'd
17:47
hit it, you know. You couldn't even see
17:49
him up there in the announcer stand.
17:52
And I'm thinking, I wonder what happened
17:53
to George? Finally I walked out there in
17:55
the arena and I could see him looking
17:57
off the back of the announcer stand he
17:58
was visiting with some old gal in the
18:00
back back there.
18:01
>> Oh, no. George was trying to get a date
18:04
during your ride?
18:05
>> he was trying to get a 8-second date. I
18:07
don't know.
18:08
I hollered at him and his brother was up
18:10
there
18:11
and he looked at me and he said, uh, "I
18:13
don't know what you're taking."
18:15
>> Did you get a re-ride?
18:16
>> No. No, you you don't get no re-ride.
18:18
You know.
18:18
>> fair.
18:20
>> Well,
18:21
>> did he get the date? Did he get the
18:22
girl? [laughter] At least.
18:25
>> I don't know about that but for a long
18:27
time every time I'd seen, you know, I'd
18:30
say, "George, you you cheated me out of
18:32
a
18:34
really nice guest buckle
18:36
and $1,200."
18:37
>> $1,200? Wow. So,
18:40
>> But I mean a friend of mine won the blue
18:41
ribbon and I was glad he did and he even
18:44
told me, "Oh, Dickie." He's come over to
18:46
me later and he said, "I guess you don't
18:48
they don't have 8-second clock in
18:50
Texas." And I said,
18:52
"Ah, I said like it'll be all right."
18:54
>> So, immediately after that were you
18:56
upset about it?
18:57
>> Yeah, for about a week.
18:59
>> Oh, and then it was okay?
19:00
>> Well, I mean it was still in the deal. I
19:01
was in the TCRA for the trying to go to
19:04
the finals.
19:04
>> Which is what?
19:05
>> Texas Cowboy Rodeo Association at the
19:07
time.
19:08
And, uh, that would have to me up there
19:10
about third or fourth place and end up
19:12
that year anyway breaking a bunch of
19:14
ribs, didn't get to go, but um
19:16
George, if you're watching,
19:18
>> [laughter]
19:19
>> I'm I'm going to find you someday,
19:20
buddy. I'm going
19:21
>> you $1,200.
19:23
And a nice buckle.
19:24
>> Well, it's
19:25
>> When you are in those situations, okay,
19:28
so now like we're we're come along and
19:30
you're more in your career of uh
19:32
rodeoin'. Obviously, the money is
19:34
important because that's how you travel
19:37
and sustain your life, but okay, so if
19:40
you're looking at it like I'm going to
19:41
win money and a buckle, is the buckle
19:44
pretty important as part of the win?
19:47
>> Well,
19:48
I knew a guy one time and he won a lot
19:50
of buckles. He was a saddle bronc rider.
19:52
And he had he had won a buckle at least
19:55
three times a week if he's going to five
19:57
rodeos. He was that good. And I bet he
19:59
sold half of them. He'd hawk them.
20:02
>> Oh, you're kidding. Okay, so how much
20:04
weight does it have in the buckle? Or is
20:07
it just based on the person? Like if you
20:09
like the buckle or not?
20:11
>> I never did get a buckle that I didn't
20:12
like.
20:13
You know, got some for calf ropin', uh
20:16
quite a few for bull ridin'.
20:18
And when we were showing horses, you'd
20:20
get buckles, you know, cuz it changed
20:22
there for a long time. They'd give
20:24
trophies and ribbons.
20:26
You You couldn't wear a trophy around
20:27
your waist and a ribbon didn't look good
20:29
pinned on you, you know.
20:31
>> But I think to most people that I knew
20:33
that were
20:34
die hard good rodeo people,
20:37
they wore that buckle with pride.
20:39
>> Yeah.
20:39
>> Because it was a symbol, like we said,
20:41
you know, of status, a symbol of what
20:43
you had achieved, and sometime even a
20:46
symbol of sacrifice.
20:47
You know, so I'm proud of the buckles
20:50
that I have.
20:51
I've give two away in my life, but
20:54
hey, it's an honor that I even got the
20:56
chance to do it, and the good Lord took
20:57
care of me through all of it because I
20:59
never did get back hurt very bad.
21:01
>> I know.
21:02
>> I want to introduce a new segment
21:05
>> Uh-oh.
21:05
>> that I'm sure you're going to find super
21:07
interesting.
21:09
>> Do I even know what this is?
21:11
>> No.
21:12
This is called the quick fire buckle
21:15
fashion segment.
21:16
>> Buckle fashion?
21:18
>> [laughter]
21:19
>> Yeah.
21:20
>> Here we go.
21:21
>> Okay, so here's some just like questions
21:24
that maybe
21:24
>> to answer these fast?
21:25
>> Well, no. I mean, not necessarily. It's
21:27
just a few questions here. So, and these
21:29
are like more fashion-oriented for the
21:31
people who don't have a clue about the
21:34
buckle culture. And here's one for me
21:36
from me that I was
21:38
particularly interested in. Are buckles
21:40
like shoes are for women?
21:43
So, like do you
21:47
plan an outfit
21:49
like around your buckle like I would
21:50
with shoes?
21:52
>> Well, first of all, I don't have as many
21:54
buckles as you do shoes.
21:56
>> Right.
21:56
>> You know, and I've never just like, "Oh,
21:59
well, today I'm going to wear this shirt
22:03
and this buckle cuz I think that they'll
22:05
go really well with my sandals."
22:08
>> So, you don't treat your buckle like an
22:10
accessory.
22:10
>> No.
22:12
>> Okay.
22:12
>> And I never did.
22:13
>> Well, that's unfortunate.
22:14
>> [laughter]
22:17
>> I wanted a better answer than that. When
22:18
you want a buckle, did you start wearing
22:20
it immediately?
22:21
>> Most of the time,
22:23
except for one. I won a buckle one time
22:26
and this lady was riding the check and
22:28
give me the buckle and she said, "I
22:29
don't know if you know this, Kim, but
22:31
this comes with a really nice buckle,
22:32
too, you know?" And Jace was up there
22:34
too. That's my oldest son. He was like
22:36
six, seven. And she said, "Here, young
22:38
fella, you can just have it, you know?"
22:41
So, I didn't get to wear that buckle for
22:42
a long time because he actually thought
22:44
that lady give it to him.
22:45
>> Oh, no. And Kim
22:46
>> I was going to wear it to church next
22:47
morning. No, Daddy, that's mine.
22:49
>> Oh, no. How old is he?
22:51
>> He's probably six or seven, you know.
22:53
>> Okay, do you have an everyday buckle
22:54
versus like your good buckle? Like your
22:56
going to town buckle?
22:58
>> There for a while I had a buckle that a
23:00
our good friend Chris Morton had a a guy
23:02
make for me that just had my initial on
23:05
it, you know, and I'd wear it
23:07
sort of as a going to town buckle for a
23:09
while, but mostly it's just whatever's
23:12
on the belt.
23:13
>> Mhm.
23:13
>> You know, I don't go through there and
23:15
think,
23:16
I think today I'm going to wear this
23:17
one. You know,
23:19
I usually just grab what's on there and
23:21
put it on. And I don't own but one belt,
23:23
so
23:24
>> That's what's hard. You have to switch
23:25
it out. So probably it's easier to just
23:27
keep on the one buckle for a while.
23:29
>> I guess I should start looking at it
23:31
maybe from your perspective and
23:32
>> so.
23:32
>> pick out a buckle and say, "Oh, this
23:34
matches my mascara." You know, so
23:37
>> I mean, I'm just it's just a I'm just
23:38
putting it out there.
23:39
>> Okay, I'll try to remember.
23:41
>> Is there such a thing as a buckle that's
23:43
too big?
23:44
>> We uh there's a good friend of mine, a
23:45
great cowboy poet and a great bull
23:47
rider, Jay Snyder, and we was going
23:49
somewhere one time. We was cooking for
23:51
this deal down southeastern Oklahoma,
23:54
and this guy that was hosting the event,
23:57
he come out there all did it up like Roy
23:58
Rogers, had on one of them Porter
23:59
Wagoner jackets, you know, which had all
24:01
the sequins of wagon wheels and sparkles
24:04
and all this stuff.
24:05
>> Mhm.
24:05
>> And Jay said he got a syrup lid buckle.
24:08
>> Oh.
24:09
>> And I said, "A what?" He says, "Bigger
24:10
than a syrup lid, you know." And it's
24:12
big as a big as a dinner plate. I mean,
24:14
this buckle was 8 in round, you know.
24:17
>> Oh my gosh.
24:18
>> And I'm thinking, I I I don't know, you
24:21
know, I mean, I guess if you just had
24:23
one of them, you could use it, you know,
24:25
as maybe to wash your face in, you know,
24:27
they're they're dished a little, fill it
24:29
up with water.
24:29
>> Dual dual options for that. But
24:32
typically you don't see like an
24:33
obnoxiously large buckle.
24:35
>> No, you know, Caden, the grandson,
24:37
remember I'm he he did a video with one
24:39
time and he come out there wearing one
24:40
of them WWE world championship buckles
24:43
that he had on was like 40 ft round,
24:45
>> Mhm.
24:46
>> but uh
24:47
no, most of them weren't
24:49
great big on a standard size.
24:51
>> Well, that concludes our buckle fashion
24:54
segment for today.
24:55
>> Well,
24:55
>> I would love to bring it back, but I
24:57
didn't feel like I got a whole lot of
24:58
good response from you on that one.
25:00
>> Well, so I don't know what to tell you.
25:03
>> [music]
25:09
>> I don't know if you all noticed, but
25:11
somebody in this room got a major
25:13
upgrade in their bed.
25:15
>> Yes, they did.
25:16
>> And that's major, and he is so passed
25:18
out because he's very comfortable. So, a
25:21
while back, it's been a few weeks, we
25:22
actually had a flood in this room.
25:26
It was about 2 in of water, and poor
25:27
Major's bed got a little wet. So, we had
25:31
a major upgrade, and he is now in the
25:34
deluxe Lola bed.
25:36
>> Yeah, I mean,
25:37
this is first class.
25:38
>> This is super bougie first class for
25:41
Major. He Oh, he's he's waking Oh, no,
25:43
he's just readjusting. I have And you
25:46
guys have may have heard of the Lola
25:47
blanket. Super plush, super luxurious.
25:51
It makes me so happy. And why can't our
25:54
dogs feel the same way? He has this
25:58
small dog bed, which is plenty big for
26:00
him. They've got several sizes. This is
26:03
the way to go, guys.
26:04
>> When when we got blanket and we had it,
26:06
we were thinking, "Man, this is so
26:07
comfortable, feels so good."
26:09
And before we could hardly even get this
26:11
thing put together, he was already
26:13
wanting to crawl in it.
26:14
>> I know Yeah, so the dogs overtook all of
26:17
the blankets. So, then I found out they
26:19
have a dog line. I have already started
26:22
to think about Christmas gifts, and the
26:24
Lola blankets and the Lola dog beds are
26:28
great idea. And the reason is I do
26:29
Christmas shopping early because then
26:31
when actual Christmas time comes, you
26:33
don't feel so stressed that you've
26:35
already made all these purchases and
26:36
money's going out the window. But,
26:39
here's the best part. We have 40% off

27:24
>> [music]
27:25
>> I kind of want to change up into just
27:27
talking about the rodeo culture in
27:29
general.
27:29
>> [music]
27:30
>> And if Okay, like if somebody is walking
27:33
into a rodeo for the first time, I want
27:36
to know like are there any unspoken
27:38
rules that we should know because like
27:39
at the chuck wagon we we've mentioned,
27:42
there are a lot of rules.
27:44
Like cowboy code and ethics, especially
27:46
around the chuck wagon where um you
27:48
know, there's certain places that you
27:50
don't walk around, that's cookie's
27:52
space. You don't dust camp, you don't
27:54
talk about religion or politics under
27:57
the fly of the wagon, which is the tarp.
27:59
Are there any like unspoken rodeo rules?
28:03
>> Well, I don't think you you don't just
28:05
go around there behind the shoots and
28:07
just
28:08
go to talking to somebody that you don't
28:09
even know. There's a lot of respect in a
28:12
rodeo and in an arena. You know, you
28:14
don't you don't cut in front of people.
28:17
Um manners are pretty well the same from
28:19
growing up rural to going into a rodeo
28:22
and arena. You know, everybody's out to
28:24
help somebody else. It's Sure, there's a
28:26
great competition, but nearly everybody
28:29
behind them shoots knows everybody else
28:31
that's back there. You know, it's cuz
28:33
you're going to see them people next
28:34
week or you're going to see them week
28:35
after, you know.
28:36
It's just a big family.
28:38
>> Is there a lot of like heated rivalry?
28:40
>> I don't think so, not so much because
28:42
it's I mean sure, they're all they're
28:44
great competitors, especially now, you
28:46
know, with all the PBR and the PRCA. But
28:49
as you go back to when I was one of my
28:52
first little buckle, you know, people
28:54
are
28:55
enthusiastic and cheering you on. People
28:57
want to see you do good. You know, they
28:59
won't say, "Oh, I hope he gets bucked
29:00
off and he gets run over." You know, I
29:02
never did hear that. And so, I think
29:05
it's it's not a sport in which there's a
29:08
lot of ill wishes towards people.
29:11
>> Oh, that's nice to hear.
29:12
>> Yeah. Uh it's a it's a sport that's a a
29:14
lot of respect. It's usually pretty
29:17
fast.
29:18
>> Mhm.
29:18
>> You know, 8 seconds don't take long.
29:20
>> What's the vibe
29:22
behind the shoots?
29:24
>> Well, there's a great camaraderie back
29:26
there really because like I say, you
29:27
know everybody. But uh people are sort
29:30
of in their zone. You know, people are
29:32
>> Very focused, right?
29:34
>> You know, people are going through the
29:35
motions of what they think might happen
29:37
or people are working on a rigging or
29:39
people are rosin' an old rope, you know,
29:42
uh but it's it's a place that there's if
29:45
you could
29:46
feel the mental activity or sense it
29:49
with some kind of machine, it's high cuz
29:51
there's
29:52
there's a lot of mental preparedness
29:54
going on before this event takes place.
29:57
>> There's something that I want to note
29:59
>> Uh-oh.
29:59
>> about
30:00
>> Uh-oh.
30:01
>> rodeo culture. And I want to know if you
30:04
at home are familiar with this. A little
30:07
phenomenon called the buckle bunny.
30:11
>> The buckle bunny.
30:13
>> And if you guys at home don't know what
30:14
this is. So,
30:15
the buckle bunny is traditionally Now,
30:19
tell me if I'm getting this right.
30:20
>> I am not even going to get in on this.
30:22
>> Um is it's sort of like the groupie
30:25
version, like a band groupies version in
30:28
the rodeo world. So, it's like generally
30:31
uh well, I guess it is all women.
30:33
>> Yeah.
30:33
>> Young ladies who have, you know, found
30:37
like their favorite cowboy and are great
30:40
fans. They may be even go to multiple
30:43
rodeos to see them and they're called
30:45
buckle bunnies cuz they're chasing the
30:47
cowboy with the buckle, right?
30:50
>> What?
30:50
>> Did Did they have
30:51
>> [laughter]
30:53
>> Did they have buckle bunnies at the time
30:56
when you were big in rodeo?
30:59
>> I ever went to a rabbit rodeo in my
31:01
life. [laughter]
31:02
You know, to where
31:03
where I've seen a buckle bunny. But
31:06
I know what you're talking about.
31:07
>> Yeah.
31:08
>> I I didn't There were a lot of it that
31:10
went on. Uh
31:12
>> I think and and to be fair, this happens
31:14
in every kind of
31:15
>> Oh, yes.
31:16
>> You know, you have sports bunnies or you
31:20
know, like uber fans um with bands. So,
31:23
it's not it's not specific to rodeo, but
31:26
>> You you got to see in
31:28
a lot of different things as rodeos
31:30
progressed.
31:31
And when I was going hard, I mean, you'd
31:33
be at a rodeo on Thursday, you'd be at a
31:35
different one on Friday and then you'd
31:36
be somewhere on Saturday. Saturday's all
31:38
big always a big night.
31:39
>> Mhm.
31:40
>> Championship night. Big dance after
31:42
rodeo. I mean, things going to be
31:44
playing. We might even get to hear Jody
31:46
Nix or something, you know? There'd be a
31:48
lot of them buckle bunnies at the dance.
31:51
>> Could you spot out a buckle bunny?
31:54
>> I didn't look for them, but you I'm sure
31:56
you could.
31:57
>> Do they have like a laser eye?
31:59
That's what I'm picturing. Like a lot of
32:01
laser eyes and like hair flips.
32:03
>> There was a lot of hair fashion back
32:05
then.
32:06
>> Big hair.
32:07
>> But they wore bigger buckles than
32:08
usually what we won.
32:10
>> The bunnies?
32:11
>> Yeah, a lot of them.
32:11
>> Okay. Did they actually win them or were
32:13
they just like
32:14
>> I think a lot of them were store-bought.
32:15
>> Yeah.
32:16
>> You know, you could go to one of them
32:18
rodeos and go to a dance on Saturday
32:19
night. You could see everything in the
32:21
world. I mean, you'd you'd see outfits
32:23
back then that even shocked me. I mean,
32:25
it's better than going to Walmart now
32:27
late at night, you know? So, I never put
32:30
much great thought in the
32:32
buckle bunnies.
32:33
>> I'm just curious like what the dating
32:35
scene is behind these. like it's like
32:38
bachelor style, you know, it's it's got
32:40
to be pretty crazy. You got these this
32:43
you know, this
32:43
>> Is this
32:44
Did we go to a reality podcast today?
32:47
>> I'm just thinking this may be a great
32:49
reality TV show.
32:51
>> Buckle bunnies. Most of the time when I
32:53
got
32:54
>> You weren't even The thing is you
32:55
weren't even paying attention, were you?
32:56
Like to the social scene. You were like
32:59
focused. You were You go in, do your
33:01
thing, and then you left pretty much,
33:02
right?
33:03
>> If we didn't win no money, we'd stop at
33:05
Allsup's.
33:06
>> Which is a regional gas station that has
33:10
burritos.
33:11
>> Fast green chili burritos. You ever
33:13
eaten laughing at that time you get one
33:14
for a dollar, you know? So me and Jace
33:17
we could have burrito apiece and we knew
33:19
it was pretty good. And if we won, we
33:21
get a burger somewhere, you know? It's
33:23
big doings, but most of the time cuz I'm
33:26
I probably had to work the next day,
33:28
you know, or was going to a rodeo that's
33:30
400 mi from there, so you just get on
33:31
the road.
33:32
>> Yeah.
33:33
>> And I'm I think one of the best fights
33:35
I've ever seen in my life was at a rodeo
33:37
between two buckle [clears throat]
33:38
bunnies.
33:39
>> Between the two bunnies?
33:40
>> Yeah.
33:41
>> Ooh.
33:42
>> See, this is the kind of stuff I want.
33:46
What happened?
33:48
>> Well,
33:49
they was dressed up in some of them
33:50
little blue jean shorts, you know, and
33:53
uh
33:53
>> That I'm guessing were extra short.
33:55
>> Yes. Wearing some of them white boots,
33:57
you know?
33:57
>> Ooh, nice.
33:59
>> And
34:00
I think the way it went cuz I was
34:01
talking to a good friend of mine Joe
34:03
Bill and we just heard the commotion,
34:05
but I think one of them that was dancing
34:07
with the other one's boyfriend and and
34:09
she didn't know it and then she found
34:10
out and there's a whole lot more drama
34:12
went on and next thing I know she done
34:14
got her by the hair of the head and
34:15
jerked her out on the floor and is
34:17
trying to trying to just whoop the snot
34:19
out of her, but the gal on the bottom,
34:22
she is tough.
34:23
>> Oh, was she?
34:23
>> Yeah.
34:24
Cuz she done reached up there and and
34:26
got her by the ear WITH HER TEETH.
34:28
>> OH.
34:29
>> And
34:30
so that's when me and Joe Bill started
34:31
paying more attention,
34:33
it's going to be a good fight. Some best
34:35
fights I've ever seen in my life between
34:36
women.
34:37
>> Yeah,
34:38
it's cuz it's the hair pulling. Like
34:40
it's it's it's deeper. Guys fight and
34:43
then it's over and like
34:44
>> And then most of the time if they
34:46
hollered fight somewhere, I usually just
34:47
look for the door and got ready to
34:48
leave.
34:49
>> Oh.
34:49
>> You know, because you never knew what
34:50
was going to happen, but it was very
34:52
rare.
34:53
You know, there's
34:55
Sure, you're going to have that in a lot
34:57
of places wherever you go, but
35:00
Uh have we got anything else to talk
35:02
about besides [laughter] the buckle
35:03
bunnies?
35:04
>> You want to move on? Would you like to
35:05
go back to the buckle fashion segment?
35:07
>> No, I'll
35:08
>> [laughter]
35:08
>> pass on it, too.
35:10
>> Um hey,
35:12
I actually have a buckle
35:13
>> Yes, you do. You want it.
35:15
>> I did. Would you all like to hear it?
35:18
So, my
35:20
I have a fascination with buckles and
35:23
the winning of buckles. However, I am
35:26
getting too old to have a event or sport
35:31
where I can win a buckle. There's no way
35:33
I'm not going to do trick riding, I'm
35:35
not going to do
35:36
>> You're not going to be a barrel racer?
35:37
>> I'm not going to be barrel racing. So,
35:39
I'm running out of things that I can win
35:41
a buckle.
35:41
>> What about a hot dog eating
35:42
championship?
35:43
>> Do they give buckles for that?
35:44
>> I don't know, but you
35:46
>> I'll look into it. Okay, so we are this
35:49
is several years ago. This is like maybe
35:51
35:54
We got invited to a chuck wagon cook-off
35:57
and this was in our buckle wilderness in
36:00
Oklahoma.
36:00
>> down by Ardmore, Oklahoma.
36:02
>> So, what was interesting about this once
36:03
we got there and set up, there were
36:05
about maybe 10 wagons or so and then
36:07
what you do is you cook a full meal and
36:10
each plate or each category is judged.
36:13
So, we had like beans, biscuits, chicken
36:16
fried steak, mashed or potatoes, uh
36:19
dessert. I think those are roughly the
36:21
the categories.
36:23
And so, we get there and we set up and
36:25
we're getting ready to do to get to
36:27
cooking and we find out that they're
36:30
giving buckles away. Not just like an
36:33
overall winning buckle, but they're
36:35
giving one away for each winner in each
36:39
category.
36:40
>> So, [clears throat] I'm thinking my odds
36:43
to win a buckle just went way up. So,
36:45
I'm really excited about it. Kent could
36:46
really care less. He's like, "Whatever."
36:48
He's really not even that big into the
36:51
chuck wagon cook-off scene. So,
36:53
>> I've done it for so many years.
36:54
>> You had done it for so long. I hadn't.
36:56
This was maybe my second one that I had
36:58
been involved in. So, I'm thinking,
37:00
"Okay, let's get after it."
37:02
So, we do it all. We turn in our plates
37:05
and they're going through and they say,
37:09
"The winner of the best chicken fried
37:11
steak is Red River Ranch Chuck Wagon."
37:14
which was us. And I'm thinking,
37:16
"Finally!"
37:16
>> Drop that buckle.
37:17
>> I got a buckle. And Kent's like, "Go
37:19
ahead. Go get your buckle." So, I'm
37:22
walking up there
37:24
>> [snorts]
37:24
>> and I get my buckle and I turn around
37:27
and I'm walking back to the wagon like
37:30
my puppy just died. And Kent's like,
37:34
"Why are you so sad? What's wrong? What
37:36
Let me see your buckle." So, I hold up
37:38
the buckle and this is a pretty good
37:40
size buckle.
37:41
>> buckle. It's nice.
37:42
>> So, Gist buckles, I didn't not know
37:44
this, very nice. I think it's got some
37:47
jewels on it maybe. I'll take a picture
37:49
and I'll put it up on screen. And it
37:52
says,
37:54
"Best meat." It's just best meat. And
37:58
I'm thinking,
37:59
"This is not what I mean.
38:01
I wanted like best chicken fried steak
38:03
or good job you're the winner." Anything
38:05
other than best meat.
38:08
>> Have you ever wore that buckle?
38:10
>> I have wore that buckle, but I do
38:11
remember the first thing you said.
38:13
You're like, "Well, at least we weren't
38:15
cooking chicken breasts."
38:18
I thought,
38:19
"That was That's
38:20
That's it." I don't think I'll
38:22
>> you you did win a buckle. I did, but I
38:24
don't think I could wear it.
38:26
I guess I could. Leave me a comment. Is
38:28
it okay to wear that?
38:30
>> [laughter]
38:31
>> I don't know. Just transitioning here a
38:33
little bit.
38:35
I may never get a buckle
38:37
that I win something in. But one of your
38:42
most prized buckles,
38:45
I think is interesting
38:47
that
38:49
it had nothing to do with a rodeo or you
38:52
competing or you {quote unquote} winning
38:55
something, right? Tell me the story
38:57
about your most prized buckle that you
39:00
received.
39:01
>> You know, I think the buckle that
39:02
actually means the most to me was a
39:04
buckle I won in 2005.
39:07
And
39:09
it was not due to any rodeo.
39:12
It was due to a cooking event that we
39:14
did.
39:16
In
39:17
Bentonville, Arkansas, Pea Ridge
39:19
National Cemetery, cook for Give Kids
39:22
the World Foundation.
39:23
Me and
39:25
Brian and old pop, also known as Jerry.
39:28
We fed 750 people a night meal, 750
39:31
breakfast, 750 noon meal.
39:33
>> And what were you doing there?
39:35
>> Uh it was an event that they were as a
39:37
fundraiser, a celebrity trail riding,
39:40
raising money for Give Kids the World
39:41
Foundation.
39:43
And if you don't know what that is, it's
39:45
it's for kids that
39:48
are terminally ill.
39:49
>> Mhm.
39:50
>> They can come in. It's a great program.
39:53
Um
39:54
and it'll touch your heart. People need
39:56
to go back and watch that video. But
39:58
that buckle was given to me
40:01
as a what we did for those people.
40:05
With us and some sponsors, they raised
40:08
$857,000
40:10
in them three meals.
40:12
And um went to a great cause.
40:14
That
40:15
buckle was presented
40:18
by
40:19
one of their sponsors.
40:21
And it's got 2005
40:23
Give Kids the World donor by Walmart.
40:27
>> Okay.
40:27
>> Cuz Bentonville, Arkansas is the home of
40:29
Walmart.
40:30
>> Right.
40:31
>> And
40:32
the guy gave it to me later when we was
40:34
he come to Branson
40:35
and give it to me.
40:37
It made tears run down my face because I
40:40
remember
40:41
what we did for those people but it was
40:44
near the sacrifice that all those
40:47
families and all those kids had been
40:48
through.
40:49
You know, so I was blessed to have it.
40:52
But when I look at it and when I wear it
40:56
I don't think of how much work we had to
40:58
do.
40:59
I think about all them families and all
41:01
them kids that went through such a
41:02
tragedy and how many that didn't make
41:05
it, you know, so it'll always have a
41:07
special place in my heart. It's a buckle
41:10
that I seldom wear anymore. I just put
41:12
up
41:12
>> And why is that?
41:14
>> It's it's just special. You know, it's
41:16
one of them that I mean I don't you
41:17
don't wear it out. It is a great quality
41:19
buckle. But I don't want it to draw
41:21
attention to me as something that I did.
41:24
I want it to If I was going to wear it
41:26
and I've had people come to What's a
41:28
nice looking buckle? Where'd you win
41:29
that at? I said it wasn't about winning.
41:32
I said it was about what you could give
41:34
back.
41:35
And um
41:36
And they they'd say, "Well, how much
41:37
money did you have to give them to get
41:39
it?" I said, "It's not about money.
41:41
It's about your time, your dedication,
41:45
what you can do to help somebody else.
41:47
And
41:48
it'll
41:49
it'll be one of them that I I hope
41:52
someday
41:54
that
41:55
if you look at it and I'm gone
41:58
you can say that was a buckle that was
42:00
won with pride
42:02
with honor and integrity.
42:04
A buckle that means a lot because it was
42:07
for a great cause.
42:09
And when you when you wear anything in
42:11
life that you've won or you've earned,
42:14
it's not To me, it's not about status.
42:16
It's not about Oh, well, you know, I won
42:19
championship bull riding at 11 years
42:21
old.
42:21
>> Mhm.
42:22
>> It's about
42:24
just having enough pride in yourself to
42:26
know that you accomplished something,
42:28
but
42:29
not not to brag about it.
42:31
>> Yeah.
42:31
>> And I think that's the main thing.
42:33
>> Is there a difference in the feeling
42:36
between winning a buckle and that buckle
42:39
that you were presented?
42:41
>> Yeah, I mean, I'm I'm I'm proud of every
42:43
buckle I've ever won, you know, but did
42:46
I know they's even given buckles? No. Up
42:49
there Give Kids the World. You know, I I
42:50
didn't know there was going to be a
42:51
buckle. Never even heard of it, you
42:53
know.
42:53
>> Yeah.
42:54
>> They had three. They give them to three
42:55
people.
42:56
>> Oh, neat.
42:57
>> You know, I don't know who the other One
42:58
of them went to one of the uh
43:01
the people that work there at Give Kids
43:03
the World, but it's monetarily,
43:06
you know, when I when I won one of the
43:08
last buckles that I've won was
43:10
$1,000
43:12
and a buckle.
43:13
>> Mhm.
43:14
>> You know,
43:15
well, that buckle they give me there at
43:16
Give Kids the World Foundation,
43:19
you could not put a price on that
43:20
buckle.
43:21
>> Yeah.
43:21
>> You know, that's what you call
43:22
priceless. And
43:24
>> Um what I found is that
43:27
the in the cowboy culture, the buckle is
43:30
kind of the first thing you see,
43:33
but it's the man and the person behind
43:35
it
43:36
>> Yeah.
43:36
>> that really represents the character.
43:40
>> Yeah.
43:40
>> Um and that's what tells the story. I
43:42
think the buckle's a great introduction
43:44
or maybe a great talking point, but
43:47
really there's a whole lot of story and
43:50
meaning behind a buckle.
43:53
>> You know, and and it's not just rodeo
43:55
buckles. You see all kinds of buckles
43:56
now, you know, there's buckles for
43:59
fashion, you know.
44:00
>> Yes.
44:00
>> Uh I I see buckles
44:02
>> Buckles for best meat.
44:03
>> Yeah.
44:04
>> [laughter]
44:04
>> I I've seen a buckle not long ago. It
44:06
just said,
44:08
"I ride for Jesus."
44:09
>> Oh, yeah.
44:10
>> You know, it just had a cross on it.
44:12
So, there's all kinds out there, but
44:14
it's It's like you said, and my dad told
44:17
me so many years ago, you never judge a
44:18
man by what he wears or the hat on his
44:20
head or the horse he rides. It's what's
44:22
inside his heart that counts, you know?
44:24
Everybody that's won a buckle, I know
44:26
they're proud of it. Surely you're proud
44:28
of yours in some way.
44:29
>> I know, I do. Like I I do appreciate it.
44:31
And you know what? Maybe I'll bust it
44:32
out and
44:33
>> I think you should start wearing it, you
44:35
know?
44:36
Be proud of what you accomplished, you
44:38
know?
44:39
>> I mean, I did legit win it and earn it,
44:41
so.
44:41
>> Yes. Best chicken fried steak ever.
44:43
>> Yes.
44:44
>> it's changed a lot, I think, in rodeo
44:47
from
44:48
when I was 10 years old to what it is
44:50
now, you know?
44:52
There's still the same events, you know?
44:55
But, the athletes are better.
44:58
From the athletes being of human heart
45:01
and the ones being of bovine and equine.
45:03
>> Oh.
45:04
>> I mean,
45:05
>> That And that's interesting, though.
45:06
Those are Those are athletes, too.
45:08
>> Oh, yeah.
45:09
Yeah.
45:09
>> And they're bred for it, you know? So,
45:11
it it is a It is a great thing that has
45:13
happened. There's
45:15
so much more money that goes into pro
45:17
rodeo now than what there used to be, so
45:19
much more sponsorship and stuff like
45:21
that.
45:22
>> Mhm.
45:22
>> So, I tip my hat to all them young ones
45:24
that's going down the road. They're
45:26
earning it. And if you got a buckle,
45:28
wear it with pride.
45:29
But, know it's in your heart, too, you
45:32
know? You got to have it there. Well,
45:34
I enjoyed it.
45:35
>> Yes, I Some Did you enjoy it?
45:36
>> Well, there was [laughter] a time where
45:37
I felt I was on trial.
45:39
You know.
45:41
And
45:41
And George, if you're out there, I'm
45:43
coming for you, buddy.
45:44
Really, I'm not. I forgive you. I did.
45:47
But, folks, remember what we told you
45:48
there at the first. We appreciate each
45:50
and every one of you. I may not get all
45:52
your comments answered, but I guarantee
45:54
you I see each and every one of them.
45:56
And we appreciate that so much because
45:58
remember this, you are not fans, you are
46:01
family.
46:02
>> And whether you have a buckle that's you
46:04
won, is for fashion, wear it with pride.
46:07
>> That's right. Be proud of who you are.
46:09
>> Yep.
46:09
>> And uh I'm going to leave you with one
46:11
thing here, too. Pride is something that
46:13
we all should have.
46:15
You know, take pride in what you do.
46:16
>> Yep.
46:17
>> Uh be proud of who you are, proud of
46:19
what you have accomplished. But don't
46:21
let pride become all you are.
46:24
>> Yes.
46:24
>> You know, don't be boastful. Don't be
46:26
bragging. Uh and be a good neighbor.
46:29
If you get a chance, Mr. Rogers, that's
46:31
what he told us, you know, "Will you be
46:33
my neighbor?" Can you sing that song?
46:35
>> No.
46:35
>> Oh, okay.
46:37
But again, we thank you so much for
46:39
joining us, taking time out of your day.
46:41

46:58

47:01
one about my dad and going through
47:02
cancer, and I told you if you needed
47:04
prayers,
47:05
just tell me. I prayed for so many
47:08
people in the last [music] 2 weeks, and
47:10
I'll continue to do so. So, don't be
47:11
afraid to ask. But it is with pride,
47:14
honor, and privilege that I tip my hat
47:17
to all our servicemen and women, and all
47:18
the veterans that have kept that old

flag a-flying over camp. Uh we commend
47:22
you all and lift you up in prayer daily.

47:26
every one. We'll see you down the
