Babymetal started in 2010 as what sounded like a joke: three Japanese teenage girls performing choreographed idol music over aggressive heavy metal instrumentals. Created by producer Kobametal as a subunit of a larger idol group, Babymetal immediately divided the metal community. Many metal fans rejected them outright, arguing they weren’t “real” metal because the members didn’t write the songs or come from traditional metal backgrounds. But as the group kept performing, the backlash slowly turned into fascination. Their live shows combined extreme musicianship, synchronized choreography, and chaotic energy in a way that few other bands could replicate. After winning over skeptical crowds at major festivals like Sonisphere 2014, Babymetal’s rise became impossible to ignore. They toured with artists like Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers, performed with Rob Halford of Judas Priest, and helped create an entirely new lane in modern metal. What began as one of the most mocked concepts in the genre eventually became one of its biggest global success stories.
