Unaccountable Predator ( A Landlord Lament)
Oct 24, 2025
I’ve lived in this nonprofit housing unit for 15 years, and my partner was here even earlier—over 20 years ago. Although the housing was originally designated as transitional, the model has not been followed through, not in over 20 years. There are truly no active support services, workers are weaponized or the agency loses its partnership, no time-limited agreements, and many tenants have remained for decades. Despite this, management continues to treat us as temporary occupants, denying us the rights and stability afforded under the Residential Tenancies Act. Recently, tenants were and are still being ordered to vacate their units daily for a week while essential services—bathrooms, kitchens, water access—were inaccessible, and sleeping there at night will be impossible. No alternative accommodations are offered. We are expected to navigate an unlivable mess with nothing but a bare strip of floor, forced to find shelter elsewhere during the day and return to units stripped of dignity and function. This treatment disregards our long-term tenancy, our legal rights, and our humanity. It’s not just disruptive—it’s destabilizing, discriminatory, and unlawful.
