where should I start looking straight to
0:37
the point i like that we know for a fact
0:40
the silver must be getting lost
0:41
somewhere on its way to the mint that
0:43
means it would be best to discreetly
0:44
inspect all operations and find out
0:46
where the problem is first of all you
0:48
should ask miners from every shift how
0:50
many cores they mine in a day after that
0:52
we'll compare the numbers to the mine
0:54
record books and see but the yields
0:56
aren't the same every day right true
0:58
that's why we have to focus on one
1:00
particular day for example the other day
1:03
on the feast of St petronil Foreman Fet
1:05
was beaming and bragging to me about how
1:07
much it helped i mean mind out
1:18
so I'm supposed to ask about the feast
1:20
of St petronilla it was just a few days
1:22
ago i reckon it'll be fresh in their
1:24
memory nevertheless the minders are a
1:27
strange bunch they might not be very
1:29
forthcoming at first and they have an
1:30
odd way of speaking like calling each
1:33
other sonnet however old they are or but
1:37
you'll hear for yourself you should
1:38
pretend to be really interested in them
1:40
and maybe they'll open up to you you
1:41
could be a scholar writing a treatise on
1:43
silver mining or perhaps a nobleman
1:46
interested in buying a mine or just say
1:49
I'm your distant uncle who's initiating
1:50
you into the ins and outs of my job it's
1:53
up to you
2:01
i reckon I could pose as a curious
2:03
scholar suit yourself just don't change
2:06
your story so you don't arouse suspicion
2:08
but to the point each day three shifts
2:10
work in the shaft each has its foreman
2:12
or gaffer as they say the first shift is
2:15
led by Frank the second by Paul and the
2:18
third by Samco you'll have to ask each
2:20
one of them how many corves they mind
2:22
samco's skewers should be off work now
2:25
you'll find the other two shifts in the
2:26
mine take this so the guards will let
2:28
you in it's a letter of safe conduct
2:31
bearing my seal allowing you free
2:33
movement within the mine and what are
2:35
you going to do i'll return to the
2:36
estate to do my job what else i reckon
2:39
they must be wondering where I am by now
2:40
once you find out how many corves the
2:42
three shifts mined on the feast of St
2:44
petronil return to me we'll compare that
2:46
number to the entry in the mine book and
2:48
don't forget don't draw attention
2:57
by the way I've had the honor of meeting
2:59
your brother Peter well well Small World
3:02
he was a great help to us at Sukdoll
3:04
even though we had some
3:07
disagreements I respect him for
3:09
everything he succeeded in doing if it
3:11
weren't for him I'd never have been able
3:13
to do what I do
3:26
who's responsible for the smelting works
3:28
they have their own owners they buy ore
3:31
from us and smelt it into pure silver
3:33
then they deduct the royal tithe and
3:35
they can sell the rest and not just
3:37
silver processing the ore yields a
3:39
variety of other materials that can be
3:41
sold just as well
3:47
what happens in the smelting works each
3:49
smelting shop has a stamp mill a
3:51
roasting pit and a smelting furnace the
3:53
stamp mill is used to crush the ore into
3:55
smaller pieces to make it easier to
3:57
process after that the crushed ore is
4:00
roasted in a roasting pit to remove most
4:02
of the impurities finally everything is
4:05
smelted in a furnace to separate the
4:06
pure silver from the
4:12
slag so it's processed similarly to
4:15
steel for smithing yes but in steel
4:18
making you don't have to weigh and
4:19
record every step thrice
4:36
who owns the mines the king grants
4:39
mining rights to his loyal subjects and
4:41
these lease holders can rent out their
4:42
privileges to other people all sorts of
4:44
people operate mines in Gutenberg
4:46
nobility rich burgers even the monastery
4:49
in fact anyone with enough money to pay
4:52
for new shafts to be dug can share in
4:54
the proceeds
5:01
who's responsible for the mines the
5:03
mines in the mint are supervised
5:05
directly by the royal mint master Olrich
5:07
Vavvar Vonoy House as the steward I'm
5:11
his direct subordinate i oversee that
5:13
everything runs smoothly on his behalf
5:15
then come the chief foreman then the
5:17
other foreman and finally the ordinary
5:19
pitman in the shafts but I don't come in
5:22
contact with them very often we follow
5:24
the path of silver until the moment an
5:25
ore merchant buys the ore from us and
5:28
takes it to a smelter
5:31
how much do the mines pay to the king
5:33
that depends on whether it's a royal
5:34
mine or a mine in the hands of a mining
5:36
guild meaning the lease holders i
5:39
thought all mines were owned by the king
5:40
that's right but it's much more
5:42
profitable for the king to grant mining
5:44
rights to rich mine operators they bear
5:46
the cost of mining themselves and pay
5:48
him a share the king receives one-third
5:50
of the profits from his own mines but
5:52
only one from the lease holders that's
5:55
how he gets what's his from all the
5:56
mining what about the other two/3 of the
5:58
profits from the king's mines those go
6:00
towards the costs of course for
6:02
operations wages and shaft
6:14
security how are Grochen made from the
6:16
silver the royal share from the smelting
6:18
works goes to the mint in the Italian
6:20
court there the coiners hammer it out
6:27
then in the Italian court's pre house
6:30
our mters cut out and punch new
6:32
gshin how many mints are there in total
6:35
only the main one is left the one in the
6:37
Italian court there used to be more of
6:39
them throughout the kingdom but King
6:41
Wesles II united them all it was he who
6:45
contributed the most to the rise of the
6:46
Prague Grchen and the wealth of this
6:48
region and of course his own wealth too
