### Ingredients:
- 2 pounds (about 1kg) of potatoes (such as russet or Yukon gold)
- 1/2 cup (120ml) of milk or cream
- 1/4 cup (55g) of unsalted butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
### Optional:
- Garlic (1-2 cloves, minced) for garlic mashed potatoes
- Fresh herbs (such as parsley, chives, or thyme) for added flavor
### Instructions:
1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chunks.
2. Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt.
3. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer the potatoes until they are fork-tender (about 15-20 minutes).
4. While the potatoes are cooking, heat the milk (or cream) and butter in a small saucepan until the butter is melted and the mixture is warm. Keep warm.
5. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Mash the potatoes using a potato masher or a ricer until smooth.
6. Gradually add the warm milk mixture to the mashed potatoes, stirring until the desired consistency is reached. You may not need to use all of the milk mixture.
