Tanghulu Recipe
Introduction:
Tanghulu, a traditional Chinese street food, is a delightful treat that features skewered fruits coated in a crisp, glossy sugar syrup. Originating from Beijing, this sweet snack has gained popularity for its simple yet satisfying combination of flavors and textures. Perfect for special occasions or as a fun activity to make with family, tanghulu offers a crunchy exterior and a burst of juicy sweetness with every bite.
Ingredients:
1 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup water
1/4 cup light corn syrup
Fresh fruits (such as strawberries, grapes, or kumquats), washed and dried
Wooden skewers
Optional: sesame seeds for garnish
Instructions:
Prepare the Skewers: Thread the fruits onto wooden skewers, making sure they’re evenly spaced. Pat the fruits dry with a paper towel to ensure the syrup sticks properly.
Make the Syrup: In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and corn syrup. Heat over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves. Bring the mixture to a boil and continue cooking until it reaches 300°F (150°C) on a candy thermometer, or until it forms hard crack stage when dropped into cold water.
