Introduction
Soft pretzels are a delightful snack with a perfect balance of chewy, salty, and slightly sweet flavors. Originating from Germany, these pretzels are enjoyed worldwide for their distinctive knot shape and golden-brown crust. Ideal for dipping in mustard or cheese sauce, homemade soft pretzels can be a fun and rewarding baking project. Here’s a simple recipe to create these delicious treats right in your own kitchen.
Ingredients
1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)
1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
10 cups water
⅔ cup baking soda
Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
Instructions
Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. Add the flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
