Simple SOS Recipe (S.O.S)
Simple SOS Recipe (S.O.S) SOS (Sh*t on a Shingle) is a classic comfort food that has roots in military cuisine. Traditionally made with a simple white sauce and served over toast, this dish is filling, easy to prepare, and perfect for a budget-friendly meal. You can add your own twists to it, but this basic version keeps things simple, focusing on rich flavor and texture. Ingredients 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 ½ cups whole milk 1 cup dried chipped beef, sliced into strips (or substitute with ground beef or turkey for variety) Salt and pepper to taste 4 slices of toast (preferably whole grain or sourdough) Instructions Prepare the White Sauce (Béchamel) In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour to form a smooth paste (roux). Stir continuously for about 1-2 minutes until the flour is fully cooked and lightly golden. This will give the sauce a rich, nutty flavor while avoiding any raw flour taste. Add the Milk Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Continue to cook for 4-5 minutes, until the sauce begins to thicken. Once it reaches your desired consistency (similar to gravy), reduce the heat to low.
