Perfectly Caramelized Onions
Caramelized onions are a versatile and delicious addition to many dishes, from burgers and sandwiches to soups and stews. The process of slowly cooking onions until they turn a rich, deep brown releases their natural sugars, resulting in a sweet and savory treat. While it takes some time and patience, the result is worth every minute. Here's how to achieve perfectly caramelized onions.
Ingredients:
4 large yellow onions
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
1/4 cup water (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Onions: Peel the onions and slice them thinly. Uniform slices will ensure even cooking.
Heat the Pan: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until the butter is melted.
Add Onions: Add the sliced onions to the skillet, spreading them out evenly. Sprinkle with salt.
Cook Slowly: Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium-low if they start to brown too quickly.
Caramelize: Continue to cook, stirring every 5-10 minutes. After about 30 minutes, the onions will start to turn a golden brown. If they stick to the pan or begin to dry out, add a tablespoon of water and stir.
