Homemade Pumpkin Puree
Introduction
Pumpkin puree is a versatile ingredient used in a variety of dishes from pies to soups. Making your own puree from fresh pumpkins enhances flavor and reduces additives compared to store-bought versions. This recipe provides a straightforward method for preparing pumpkin puree from scratch using minimal ingredients and equipment.
Ingredients
1 medium sugar pumpkin (about 2-3 pounds)
Water
Optional: a pinch of salt
Preparation
Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Prepare Pumpkin: Wash the pumpkin thoroughly. Cut it in half from stem to base using a sharp knife. Scoop out the seeds and stringy fibers with a spoon. You can save the seeds for roasting if desired.
Roasting: Place the pumpkin halves cut-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Add about 1/4 cup of water to the sheet to create steam and prevent burning. Roast in the oven for 45-60 minutes, or until the pumpkin flesh is tender and easily pierced with a fork.
