Homemade Play Dough Recipe
Play dough is a simple, fun craft that encourages creativity for both kids and adults. The best part about making it at home is that you know exactly what ingredients are being used—it's safe and customizable. This recipe requires minimal ingredients, most of which you likely already have in your kitchen, making it an affordable and eco-friendly alternative to store-bought versions. The texture is soft, moldable, and perfect for sculpting shapes or using with play dough tools.
Ingredients:
1 cup all-purpose flour
½ cup salt
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup water
Food coloring (optional, for color variation)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients
In a medium-sized bowl, combine the flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Mix these dry ingredients well to ensure an even distribution of the cream of tartar, which helps give the play dough its pliable texture.
Step 2: Cook the Play Dough
In a small saucepan, add water and vegetable oil. Stir over medium heat. If you want to add color to your play dough, now is the time to stir in the food coloring. Start with a few drops and adjust to your desired color intensity. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the pan, stirring continuously to prevent lumps.
Step 3: Achieve Desired Consistency
As the dough heats, it will begin to thicken. Stir constantly for about 3-5 minutes. The dough will start pulling away from the sides of the pan and form a ball when it’s ready. The more you cook the dough, the firmer it will become. For a softer texture, remove from heat once a smooth ball forms. For firmer play dough, allow it to cook an additional 1-2 minutes.
