Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a pinch of salt. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain the potatoes thoroughly and return them to the pot. Add the butter and milk to the pot with the potatoes. Use a potato masher or a hand mixer to mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy. Add more milk if needed to achieve your desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and stir well.
