welcome to Midweek Insights this is
0:03
Pastor John from Popular Sim of God and
0:05
I'm here to share the word with you
0:07
today
0:09
um today we're going to discuss the fact
0:12
that this coming Sunday is Palm Sunday
0:16
and it's the beginning
0:22
of what they call Holy Week
0:25
um where Jesus comes into Jerusalem as a
0:29
king and then
0:33
he's taken put on
0:36
trial um his death burial and
0:40
resurrection happens this week
0:43
um he institutes the Lord's supper
0:47
there's a lot of activity happen but I
0:48
want to look simply at Palm Sunday
0:51
itself and so I'm in the book of John in
0:55
chapter
0:56
12:12 it says "On the next day much
0:59
people that were come to the feast when
1:01
they heard that Jesus was coming to
1:03
Jerusalem they took branches of palm
1:06
trees and went forth to meet him and
1:09
cried "Hosana blessed is the king of
1:12
Israel that cometh in the name of the
1:14
Lord." And Jesus when he had found a
1:17
young ass sat thereon as it is written
1:20
"Fear not daughter of Zion behold thy
1:22
king cometh sitting on an ass's colt and
1:26
these things understood not his
1:27
disciples at the first but when Jesus
1:30
was glorified then remembered they that
1:32
these things were written of him and
1:35
that they had done these things unto
1:38
him and uh you know one of the things
1:42
about Palm Sunday is Palm Sunday is
1:46
celebrated in a variety of ways all
1:49
around the world by different uh
1:51
Christian faiths in different ways
1:55
uh some people go out and they do the
1:58
triumphal entry and the stations of the
2:01
cross and and all working up towards uh
2:05
good
2:06
Friday um which according to traditions
2:10
is the day that Christ was
2:12
crucified and uh all everything focused
2:16
going forward towards that glorious day
2:20
of Christ's resurrection from the dead
2:22
which is why all of us are here to start
2:24
with we have we have our faith in Christ
2:28
because he rose from the dead just like
2:30
he said he would but there's something
2:33
important about Palm Sunday i think that
2:36
sometimes gets overlooked i mean we all
2:38
celebrate the hosana and and the palms
2:41
and everything but this is a fulfillment
2:43
of prophecy from the Old
2:47
Testament and basically is the
2:50
announcing
2:52
of Israel's returning king
2:57
um if you were if you watched um
3:00
Sunday's live stream or the YouTube
3:03
video of Sunday's live stream made
3:05
mention out of John chapter 10 where
3:09
Jesus is speaking about the good
3:12
shepherd and he refers to sheep that
3:16
were not of th of
3:18
this of those sheep but were from
3:21
another group of sheep but that he was
3:23
shepherd also of them and that he needed
3:27
to bring them in so that there was one
3:29
fold and one
3:31
shepherd and we as Christians and most
3:35
of us are not
3:38
um messianic Jews in other words we're
3:40
not Jewish people who've accepted Jesus
3:42
as the Messiah we are we're Gentiles
3:46
we're non-Jewish believers and because
3:48
we're non-Jewish believers we're part of
3:51
that other uh fold we're part of the
3:54
fold but we came from outside the Jewish
3:57
fold of sheep and so Jesus's entrance
4:00
into
4:03
Jerusalem first thing is he's riding on
4:06
an that has never been broken
4:09
it's never been
4:11
bridled um and he rides into Jerusalem
4:15
calmly on an
4:17
and the people when they see him coming
4:22
they take palm
4:23
frrons and and they lay them down on the
4:27
street as recognition of his royalty so
4:32
they're recognizing him as their
4:35
king um but they don't recognize
4:39
him as their savior
4:42
and these very same people who laid
4:45
these palm frrons down on the on the
4:48
entrance into Jerusalem when Jesus came
4:51
are the very same people that at his
4:54
trial are screaming crucify
4:57
him and the problem came from the fact
5:00
that the the Jewish
5:03
nation which was under the tyranny of
5:07
Rome was expecting the Messiah to lead
5:12
them out from under the rule of Rome
5:16
they totally missed everything that had
5:18
been prophesied about what Jesus would
5:21
do because both his first coming as the
5:26
suffering Messiah and his second coming
5:30
as the king of kings and lord of lords
5:33
are in the same sets of prophecies about
5:36
Jesus and all the prophecies lead
5:39
leading up to his death burial and
5:41
resurrection his birth his uh coming
5:43
into Jerusalem all of those things have
5:46
been fulfilled
5:48
what's still waiting to be
5:50
fulfilled is the rapture or the catching
5:54
away of the
5:56
church and then and and the resurrection
5:59
of the holy
6:01
dead and the return of Jesus to earth to
6:07
set up his kingdom and rule and reign
6:09
for a thousand years and
6:13
so Jesus had referred to the Pharisees
6:17
as being blind
6:20
um and that their sin was was
6:25
uh on them because they knew what the
6:27
scriptures said they knew what it was
6:30
what was listed but they never
6:33
recognized Jesus as the fulfillment of
6:36
those scriptures
6:38
most of them just considered him either
6:41
a teacher
6:43
um or perhaps
6:49
um a prophet but they didn't accept him
6:54
for what the Old Testament said he was
6:57
which was Emmanuel Christ on earth uh
7:01
God in the flesh uh God with
7:05
us and Because that what they were
7:09
looking for was not someone to come in
7:12
and redeem their souls and lead them out
7:16
of bondage to sin but they were looking
7:20
for the king of kings who was going to
7:22
establish his throne
7:24
forever and lead them out from under
7:28
Roman
7:29
rule and because of that they missed the
7:33
importance of why Jesus came to start
7:36
with
7:38
it was more important to God to restore
7:41
fellowship between man and
7:43
God than it
7:46
was for at that very
7:49
moment for Christ to come and lead
7:52
Israel out from under the rule of Rome
7:55
uh because the whole world needed to be
7:58
saved not just the Jewish nation
8:02
the message the gospel went to them
8:05
first but it also needed to be carried
8:07
into everybody else and the and the
8:10
disciples didn't actually get it until
8:14
Christ ascension into heaven which you
8:17
can read about in Acts Acts 1 and8 when
8:20
he told them to tear in Jerusalem till
8:22
the Holy Spirit came and that he would
8:24
send to empower them to witness in
8:27
Jerusalem Judea Samaria to the uttermost
8:30
part of the earth before he could come
8:32
back and set up his kingdom as king of
8:35
kings and lord of lords on earth first
8:38
he had to get salvation taken to every
8:41
living person
8:43
uh
8:45
worldwide and so one of the things we
8:48
have to keep in
8:50
mind is the things that Jesus did in his
8:53
earthly ministry were preparing the way
8:57
for salvation to be taken into every
8:59
part of the world and a lot of times we
9:03
miss that we miss that
9:05
connection that God first wanted to make
9:09
sure that salvation came to man he
9:13
fulfilled this promise that started all
9:15
the way back in Genesis chapter
9:17
3 and so everything in Jesus's
9:22
life right up to the point of he is
9:26
risen is focused from that perspective
9:30
christ coming to redeem man from their
9:32
sin
9:34
because eternal life was more
9:37
important than mortal life here on
9:41
earth because we all have to make a
9:44
choice and that choice has to be made
9:46
during our
9:47
lifetime and the choice truly is ours of
9:51
where we spend eternity jesus came to
9:55
make sure we had that choice that we
9:58
could choose to follow Christ receive
10:01
salvation secure a place in eternity by
10:04
serving Christ through our
10:07
our all of our being
10:11
or we could choose to reject Christ and
10:14
spend eternity separated from God and
10:17
and to
10:20
actually go to the same place that um
10:24
Satan is going to be cast into which is
10:27
an eternal lake of fire that was
10:29
prepared for him and his
10:31
angels and so the decision always comes
10:34
back to the individual
10:36
every person on the face of this earth
10:39
has to make that decision for themselves
10:42
you cannot blame mom you cannot blame
10:44
dad you not can't blame
10:47
anyone for where you spend eternity
10:50
because Jesus came and made that offer
10:53
to everybody john
10:55
3:16 so while you're making your way
10:58
through this Holy Week and are in
11:02
remembrance of the things that Jesus
11:04
said and did the fact that he is death
11:07
burial and resurrection set us free uh
11:11
from the penalty of sin if we choose to
11:14
take it keep in mind that Palm Sunday
11:19
was an announcement that the king had
11:21
arrived and the people totally missed
11:26
the significance of his arrival because
11:30
they were focused on the wrong thing and
11:33
we get ourselves in that same situation
11:35
of getting focused on the wrong thing
11:38
because we're looking in the wrong
11:41
direction
11:43
um I I've shared this many times
11:46
and the life of a Christian has an
11:49
outward focus not an inward focus my
11:53
inward focus is my relationship between
11:55
me and Christ my and I have to take care
11:58
of that first but my outward focus is my
12:03
relationship through Christ with the
12:05
world and reaching them with his promise
12:08
and his glory and he said "If I be
12:12
lifted up I will draw all men unto me."
12:15
So it falls back to me to make sure that
12:18
the things I'm doing are lifting him up
12:20
and not myself therefore I have to have
12:23
an outward focus and my focus has to be
12:27
how can I present Jesus to
12:30
someone so that they too can receive
12:32
what I received which was forgiveness
12:34
from
12:36
sins chew on that one this week think
12:39
about it as you're going through uh Palm
12:42
Sunday
12:44
um which is this coming
12:46
Sunday and then
12:49
um Good Friday Resurrection
12:53
Sunday and what it actually means
12:58
um because it's God taking the world to
13:00
himself to reconcile it with his own
13:03
blood and his own life that we might
13:05
have life and have it more abundantly
13:08
god bless you we'll see you next week
