How to Describe a Line Graph IELTS Academic Task 1
To describe a line graph for Academic Task 1, the first thing you need to do is group the information into four total paragraphs (introduction, body paragraph #1, body paragraph #2, and conclusion). Identify the information, group it, plan your body paragraphs, have a rough idea about what you are going to write, and then start writing. Begin with your introduction, then transfer your notes from your plan to your body paragraphs (body pragraph#1, body paragraph #2), and then write your conclusion. To write a good description you need to be able to switch from the active to the passive voice; learn specific adverbs, verbs (those that describe a downfall or negative reaction, stabilization, and upward trends) and nouns; and become skilled at phrases for the introduction, summaries, and for describing change. You also need to remember that, in this case, your opinion is not necessary. Make sure that the subject and verb agree, avoid basic words, and use a topic sentence in the introduction and the phrase "To conclude" in the final paragraph. A good exercise to help you improve your listening, provide advanced vocabulary, and sentence structure is to listen to the description and draw the actual line graph, instead of writing it.
