Portman Slams Oscars For Snubbing Female Directors...
Jan 27, 2026
Natalie Portman has criticized the Oscars for snubbing female directors in their 2026 nominations.
"So many of the best films I saw this year were made by women," Portman told Variety while promoting her film ‘The Gallerist’ at the Sundance Film Festival.
"You just see the barriers at every level because so many were not recognized at awards time," the 44-year-old actress said.
"Between ‘Sorry Baby’ and ‘Left-Handed Girl’ and ‘Hedda’… Extraordinary films this year that… are not getting the accolades that they deserve," she continued.
Chloé Zhao is the only woman nominated for Best Director at this year's Oscars, while her film, ‘Hamnet’ is the only Best Picture nominee directed by a woman.
Portman also discussed the challenges that women face getting movies made today. "Every step of the road is harder."
"Then you're out and it's great, and then it also doesn't get the attention," Portman said, adding that "we have a lot of work to do still. But joyfully, with a lot of joy.”
