Hey, Husker fans, welcome to another episode of the Husker Big Red podcast with Chris Peterson
0:08
and Danny Gillette. As always, go Big Red. Good morning, Husker fans and welcome back to the Husker Big Red YouTube channel. I'm
0:19
Chris Peterson and joining me as always is Danny Gillette and we're back here for our
0:23
Monday morning podcast. And Danny, how you doing this morning, man? I'm a little tired, but out here in Boston and in New England, it's Marathon Monday
0:33
So we got the Red Sox playing at 11 a.m. We got the Boston Marathon to watch. So it's
0:39
a fun day in these parts. Patriots Day. So, I mean, it adds a little bit of excitement
0:45
to Monday, which I generally almost always hate. So there's that. How are you
0:51
Oh, not too bad. Good old Patriots Day. Pretty tired, a little sleepy, but that happens when
0:56
you have a baby, I suppose. But yeah, I forgot about old Patriots Day. So that's kind of
1:01
a fun day in Boston. So that is for sure. That'll be cool. But it was a big weekend
1:05
for Nebraska, the Cornhuskers, especially the football program, getting a couple of
1:10
big commits. Some visitors have the first scrimmage of the spring, a bunch of things
1:15
happening in the transfer portal with some visitors. Tough weekend for the baseball team
1:19
losing two out of three against Rutgers. But, you know, it is what it is. But let's get
1:23
to it, man. First topic, I guess, you know, let's talk about some of these wide receiver
1:29
commitments. The Jackson Carpenter on Saturday, the in-state three-star receiver, you know
1:33
makes his commitment. Ends a little bit of a commitment drought for Nebraska. You know, there just kind of always is one, you know, when you have that spring period. That ended
1:42
that. And then the commitment drought didn't last very long. One day, as on Sunday, three-star
1:47
Bryson Hayes who got a crystal ball, or an expert projection from Brian Munson from Husker
1:52
Online on Saturday that turned out to be correct on Sunday. So back-to-back days, it's
1:57
really interesting that Carpenter, I think, is ranked number 885 in the 24-7 composite
2:03
rankings. Hayes is number 886. So, you know, you can take that for what it's worth, but
2:07
I like both of these guys a lot more than their ranking, I guess. So what are your thoughts
2:11
Danny? Talk about a couple of fun days. Nebraska certainly had some this weekend, and Carpenter
2:15
I think, is going to be an absolute steal. I mean, he's already ranked 88th numerically
2:21
in the 24-7 sports rankings. You know, the 72nd overall athlete in the composite and
2:27
the 7th overall player in the state of Nebraska. So, you know, he's really fast. He can make
2:32
things happen after the catch. He's very physical. He's athletic. You know, he kind of fits the
2:39
mold that Nebraska's trying to put together in their wide receiver room. And, you know
2:47
I think he could have a chance to really make an impact. I don't think this is just recruiting
2:52
a guy for the sake of, you know, being a local Nebraska kid. I think this Carpenter can have
2:57
legitimate talent. And, you know, his offer sheet wasn't, you know, eye-popping by any
3:03
means. Nebraska, Kansas, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, and Dartmouth. But I suspect
3:09
that his offer sheet will increase in the coming months. And it was good on Nebraska
3:15
to get on this recruitment early and get a commitment. Yeah, it was, you know, in terms of Carpenter especially, I mean, I thought that he, you
3:24
know, he's the 7th ranked player in the states and the Huskers have three of the top seven
3:28
now. But, you know, he runs, you know, the 100-meter dash in like 10.65 or 10.67, I think
3:35
I know Bryson Hayes runs it in 10.65. So, you know, very similar type players. And I
3:40
think that there's a lot of upside with both guys. I mean, Jackson Carpenter could technically
3:44
be a defensive back too, but, you know, it seems like they're definitely recruiting him
3:48
as a receiver. And I think what I like about it is now it gives you two, you know, two
3:52
guys that you can develop, you know, that they've got size, they've got speed, they've got ability. So now you have two, you know, I've always felt like this was going to be
3:59
you know, a three-man wide receiver class, you know, just with the group they have. So
4:03
now you've got two. I'm trying to, I can't remember what the phrase is, but you've got
4:07
two really good players, you know, right now in the fold. So now you can, you know, shoot
4:12
your shot with, you know, Cortez Mills and some of those big targets. And then maybe
4:18
you know, maybe you land one of those guys, you can still come back and get another receiver, but you've got two really good guys that can develop and can play and make an impact here
4:25
And I think, you know, you look at Jalen Lloyd, a guy that, you know, had pretty solid production
4:30
but was a super, you know, dynamic athlete. And I think that's what you're getting here
4:33
in Jackson Carpenter and Bryson Hayes. And they, you know, guys in the Midwest, they
4:37
just tend to be, you know, a little bit underrated especially in Nebraska, it seems like, but
4:42
Kansas too. And I think overall, it's a great sign to see Nebraska, you know, kind of locking
4:47
down the Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, you know, that kind of area, because that's
4:52
Nebraska should dominate in that, in those parts of the country. And, you know, you saw
4:56
that with, you know, Grant Bricks getting the best player out of Iowa. You know, you're
5:00
seeing him getting players out of Kansas. They're in it with Andrew Babalola, Andrew
5:03
Babalola, sorry, excuse me, in Kansas. You know, they're right with it, right in there
5:07
with all the Nebraska guys. And I know that, you know, Christian Jones and Chase Lofton
5:12
obviously are, you know, out there and teams are battling for them. But Christian Jones
5:16
was just on campus this weekend. So, I definitely would not- That was a surprise to me
5:21
Yeah, I mean, it's a surprise, you know, it was a surprise, but I guess, you know, I mean
5:25
I figured at some point it would happen. I think it's, you know, that relationship with
5:30
Nebraska, it's always there. It's kind of the same with Carter Nelson. I mean, it was like he was taking all these visits last year, but, you know, he, when it was time, he came
5:36
for the spring game and that is what mattered. And so, I feel like, you know, I'm not sure if Christian Jones is coming back for the spring game, but if they get him for an official
5:43
visit, which I believe they will, I don't think that he would not visit Nebraska. I
5:47
still, you know, at the end of the day, I'd probably still bet on Nebraska and Matt Ruhle
5:51
because he just hasn't missed in a national recruitment yet. So, until he does, you know
5:55
Matt Ruhle I'm talking about, I just don't believe that he will. So, you know, it's definitely
5:59
possible, but I'd still, at the end of the day, get a bet on Matt Ruhle when it comes to Nebraska kids
6:03
And like we were talking about the other day, like them visiting Nebraska, just from
6:08
a school standpoint is like me visiting Boston College. I can go down there anytime and see
6:13
the campus and I've already been there a couple of times and I know what the campus looks like. So, visits to some of these in-state kids, especially when it comes to Nebraska
6:20
probably isn't too, too high on their priority list in terms of finding out what the campus
6:25
looks like because they've already been there. And, you know, I think that's important to
6:29
remember too, but it was good to see Jones on the, you know, on the campus and just looking
6:34
at this 2025 class, just looking at the numerical rankings, you have Tyson Terry, 88, Jackson
6:40
Carpenter, 88, Caden Vermas, 86, Bryson Hayes, 86, Connor Booth, 86. So, these are guys that
6:48
can develop into possibly four stars and are very high three stars. So, although to some
6:53
you know, oh, three star you and blah, blah, blah, these, you know, commitments have a
6:59
lot of room to grow. And in the case of, you know, Terry, for example, and even Carpenter
7:05
I would say, you know, they could possibly be bumped to four stars by the time all is
7:11
said and done. Like a lot of these prospects, I mean, people don't, people either don't
7:17
think or don't realize that there's still a lot of development to be had. And, and I
7:21
think, you know, Matt Ruhl's done a good job, even with, you know, five commitments in this
7:25
class of getting on these recruitments early. I mean, Caden Vermas committed, you know
7:29
at this time last year, April 20th. So, he's done a good job of, you know, identifying
7:34
who he wants early, identifying, you know, key players early and, you know, also recognizing
7:40
that there's room for development and having a plan. So, I think this class is shaping
7:44
up pretty well and all things considered, I'm happy with where it sits
7:48
Yeah. And people will talk about three stars, but, you know, there's a lot of three stars
7:53
that end up playing in the NFL. That's not a, you know, the three stars, you know, the
7:57
I would say it's, there's a bigger difference between, you know, like a mid to low level
8:01
three star and a low level, you know, four star. I kind of messed up my point, but at
8:06
any rate, there's not that big of a difference between, you know, the, the, the lower range
8:10
and it's like the fourth round of the NFL draft and the seventh, you know, I don't think
8:14
that those, you know, players are that different. It's kind of just more about finding the right
8:18
fit and finding the right, you know, coach the right system, because, you know, you can
8:22
look at, I mean, I remember, you know, there's a lot of, you know, you hear that on the Michigan
8:26
side too, oh three star you. And I remember people saying that about Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham. Well, those two guys are going to be first round picks in next year's draft
8:33
And this is only their third year in college football. So if you know what you're doing
8:37
you know, and if you can evaluate talent and develop it, then, you know, you don't have to worry about the recruiting rankings so much. So I'm not worried about these rankings
8:45
and look at Jalen Lloyd. He's a great example of, you know, a guy that was barely, I don't
8:49
think he even got ranked until, you know, Nebraska got his commitment. And he, he and
8:55
Marvin Harrison were the only players in the Big Ten that had three touchdown catches of over 50 yards last year. So, and that, that just goes to show you that just because
9:02
these guys are lower ranked doesn't mean they can't produce. I always go back to my friend, Chris Lindstrom, grew up, you know, about an hour and a half
9:11
away from me, drafted 14th overall by the Atlanta Falcons, two time, second team, all
9:16
pro two time pro bowler drafted in 2019. So, I mean, I mean, you know, especially as
9:24
a lineman, a former lineman, you know, three star lineman, aren't something to necessarily
9:28
be overlooked. And I'm happy for, you know, Chris and his development. And it just shows
9:33
that, you know, sometimes you can outplay your ranking. I mean, and for Chris, you know
9:39
he played high school football in Massachusetts. And I think, you know, it's kind of a case
9:43
where he might've gotten, you know, overlooked nationally because he played in Massachusetts
9:49
kind of like we see with some Nebraska kids not being ranked properly. But, but, but anyway
9:54
my point is, you know, the three stars, like that you can make something out of a three
9:58
star player. And, you know, you see, like you said, just a little bit ago, three star
10:03
players go to the league all the time. So, I mean, I'm happy, you know, with three star
10:07
players, we don't need, you know, all five star recruits. And quite frankly, and I know
10:12
you mentioned this with the basketball portion of it, I'd rather have a three star player because he'll probably stay in school a little bit longer and continue to develop
10:19
Yeah. I mean, I definitely think, especially with basketball, that's part of the, you know
10:25
conversation trying to find the right guys that are going to fit and be multi-year players
10:29
And, you know, Nebraska is probably not going to have that issue as much as, you know, a team like, you know, a Duke or Kentucky or something, but we saw that with Calipari
10:35
I mean, if you, if you just recruit, you know, a bunch of five star kids, they're not ready
10:40
They're not old enough to play in this transfer portal era. And I think that's why, you know
10:43
part of the reason why he's at Arkansas now. And that's going to be interesting to see
10:47
how that whole thing shapes up. But at any rate, let's switch to some spring ball talk
10:53
now that we switched in some basketball. They're really fast on a random note, but at any rate
10:59
I do really like where this 2025 class is building through the Oscars. They're in a
11:03
great spot. You know, TJ Lateef, they got a lot of guys coming for spring, spring practices
11:08
and the spring game. So, you know, and this is a, this is a competitive team. And I honestly
11:12
think that, you know, the spring league that they have, I think that's going to be something that's attractive to players. And just, that was a great idea. Was that their first year
11:18
Yeah. That's the first year they've done that. I love the guy. I think Bobby Hessling, I'm not even sure if that's his real name. You know, I don't know if they, if that's his actual name
11:25
but he is, he's pretty hilarious. I don't know who he is, but want to give him a shout out
11:29
And I love those highlights and it gives us, it gives us a look into spring ball. You know
11:34
they do the player interviews, which are fun, gives them more of an opportunity to, you know
11:38
work on their media relations skills and stuff, but, but mostly I just love the competitive
11:43
spirit of it. And man, you know, even though we didn't get a lot of highlights yesterday
11:47
it was, it's interesting though, that there was more Danny Kaelin highlights in the spring
11:52
you know, minute or the spring scrimmage highlight they released yesterday than Dylan Rayola. I don't know. It just seems like maybe that's, that's slightly intentional, but Danny
11:59
Kaelin's definitely playing his butt off right now though. It is. I mean, they don't want to
12:03
show Dylan Rayola. I mean, one post and we immediately write about it and next thing you
12:07
know, he's the best thing and fans are going nuts. So it is intentional. They know what they're doing
12:13
Dylan did have one throw in there. They showed him kind of stepping up and dropping a throw
12:18
So I think it's also kind of smart because it just lowers expectations because you know us
12:22
every single Dylan Rayola highlight where we're, you know, thinking he's the next best thing and
12:28
we're off season champions and we're going to win it all. So, I mean, I'm, I'm, I'm happy to see
12:33
Danny get his due. I think, I think with all the Dylan Rayola talk, I'm not going to say he's
12:39
underrated, but he's definitely taken a little bit of a backseat just in terms of, you know
12:45
fan excitement and things like that. So, you know, he's no slouch either. And I think that
12:53
you know, as long as he continues to develop and keeps developing, he's going to be equally
12:58
as good a quarterback. Maybe not equally as good a quarterback, but he's going to be
13:03
you know, not a huge drop off from, from Rayola. So, I mean, we'll see what happens
13:10
but I'm just happy that the quarterback room seems to be developing at a high level
13:17
Yeah, they definitely are. And I mean, Matt talked about, you know, he's, he's talked about
13:20
the unique arm strength of Dylan Rayola, but I see something that, you know, stood out with me
13:27
and probably a bunch of other people was, you know, he talked about their, that he's never had
13:31
like a college quarterback in 11 years, been able to do, you know, what these guys can do in terms
13:35
of like identifying protections and all that type of stuff. So there's a lot to that, you know
13:40
with quarterback, there's a lot that goes beyond just the physical aspect of it. And both of these
13:44
guys seem to be well ahead of the curve in terms of, you know, handling all that stuff. So I think
13:48
that's a pretty good sign. And, you know, as far as far as them playing right away, I think I saw
13:53
Emmett Johnson, you know, making some highlights there. He's looking really good. Dante Dowdell had a 30 yard run on Saturday
14:00
Yeah. And he I've been, I've heard, you know, more of his name, you know, Dante Dowdell
14:06
you know, popping up there, which I think is good. I heard some good things about Stefan Thompson
14:10
Which is good because I think he had a little, I don't want to say rough start and criticize him, but he had a slow start to begin things
14:17
I think it is, you know, it does seem to be that, you know, Matt rule runs a tough
14:21
he runs a tough program that some guys aren't always quite ready for. So, you know, but it seems like those guys have kind of, you know, found their way. I mean
14:28
it happened last year and those guys all, you know, were able to make it work. So
14:33
yeah, I think, you know, things are going pretty well with the spring of you
14:37
you know, heard some other stuff, Danny, about the scrimmage or spring ball this past week
14:42
Yeah. I had heard that the starting offensive line on Saturday was
14:48
Prohoshka, Henry Lutovsky, Ben Scott, Justin Evans Jenkins, and Bryce Benhart. And I am
14:57
completely okay with that. I don't know about you. I'll let you have your opinion before I delve into
15:03
some more of what I heard from Saturday. I like that lineup. Yeah, no, I like that group. Henry
15:09
Lutovsky is a very, he's played well when he's had opportunities and I've been talking him up
15:13
since the 2022 season. So, yeah, I'm not shocked that he is in the mix there. And Evan Jenkins
15:19
played well last year. You know, he's, we talked about him on Saturday as a guy that probably will
15:25
be their starting center next year. He's been taking number two reps there, but yeah, that
15:28
doesn't surprise me at all. I will be interested to see what happens. She's having microphone
15:32
issues today. I'll be interested to see what happens when, you know, Turner Corcoran comes
15:38
back and if they're going to have him be a guard or a tackle, you know, and that I think that'll
15:41
be kind of interesting. But, but yeah, it's still a lot of football to go, but I like the depth that
15:46
they've got up front to actually have, you know, tangible O-line depth. It feels like for the first
15:50
time in a long time. Absolutely. And, you know, you don't have to worry about if somebody gets
15:56
injured, what are you going to do? Like now we have, now we're starting to be able to cycle in
16:00
players and things like that, which is important. Harburg, I had heard started on Saturday and he
16:07
is looking really good in these scrimmages. I've heard the past couple of weeks, he's looked really
16:11
good. So although, you know, the odds may be against him, let's be honest here. He's not
16:15
you know, just throwing in the towel. He's still producing at a high level. On Saturday, a wide
16:23
receiver lineup of, of Bonner, Jalen Lloyd and Alex Bullock was present. So I think that's
16:32
interesting. I know Bonner plays fullback sometimes as well. Dante Dowdell had a 30-yard
16:41
run on Saturday and, you know, I think that's, that's a good sign because I hadn't heard too
16:47
much about him in terms of, you know, practice reports and things like that. And Ashton Murphy
16:56
the recruit from last year, the commit from last year played really well. And I think he just needs
17:02
to get a little bit bigger, obviously, and a little bit stronger. You know, I would expect
17:06
that coming from a, from, you know, a younger player once they hit that strength and conditioning
17:14
program, which is, I think already, you know, we're already seeing the returns for Nebraska
17:21
You know, I think that will help him even more. Turner Corcoran has done a really good job of
17:29
you know, helping Grant Bricks and coaching him up on the line, which makes sense because
17:35
we've heard a lot of positive feedback on Grant Bricks over the last week or so
17:39
And Matt Rule's been impressed. I know you wrote an article about it on huskerbigred.com on
17:43
Thursday. I think it was how, you know, Matt Rule was impressed by Bricks. So that's encouraging as
17:49
well, because Bricks is going to be a key piece of the future. And, you know, by all accounts
17:53
he's a good kid too. So he has a lot of things going for him and I'm happy he's adjusting
17:58
because it's not always easy for freshmen. And, you know, Bly Hill is going to, you know
18:05
get into the corner mix very quickly. He's long, he's fast, he's not afraid to hit is what I'm
18:13
hearing. So, I mean, this was something that you talked about last week as well. You know
18:18
we've mentioned Bly Hill's name on the show a couple of times and, you know, I think out of
18:25
all of the commitments and the transfers that we got in the, you know, 2024 class, I feel like he
18:31
flew under the radar a bit, but it's good to hear that he is making an impact on the field
18:37
And that was about all I had heard from Saturday, but there was a lot of good notes in there
18:42
I'm happy that Turner is coaching up Grant because, you know, I think peer coaching can
18:47
be useful too. And I'm excited about, I'm excited about the combination of Bonner
18:53
Lloyd and Bullock because although Alex Bullock may be not be the most explosive and fast like
19:01
some of the other wide receivers in the room, he does have good hands and he knows, you know
19:06
the system from last year already. So, I'm not going to say he's going to be an All-American
19:11
but I can see him playing a big role due to the fact that he has familiarity and
19:15
you know, he is a, you know, a consistent player when given the opportunity. And plus, you know, you need to block, you need to have receivers that are willing to block too
19:23
is another thing that sticks out in my mind, especially if you want to run the ball as much
19:27
as I think Nebraska wants to. I think they're going to, it's going to be hard not to throw the ball, especially, you know, when Dylan and everybody gets rolling. But I think the running
19:35
backs have me, you know, feeling good, the offensive line, the defense. So, we'll get
19:39
we'll get our glimpse here in less than two weeks now. We got the spring game, the 27th. So
19:45
that's going to be very exciting to see how all these quarterbacks, you know, go up. I'm assuming
19:50
you know, it's going to be interesting because I'm assuming that that Raiola and Kalen are going to be on different teams, how they did it, you know, last year, but I'm not sure. Obviously
19:58
one of them is going to be on the same team as Heinrich. So, it's going to be interesting to
20:02
see how they divide up the quarterback snaps, you know, for the spring game. So, at any rate
20:07
last thing I wanted to get to today, you know, transfer portal talk, I guess for a couple of
20:12
reasons, because one, I believe the football transfer portal is opening today or tomorrow
20:17
I'm not 100% sure if it's the 15th. Yeah. But at any rate for the next two weeks, essentially
20:23
it's going to be open season for, you know, players entering the transfer portal, the spring
20:27
portal. Hopefully, we don't have anybody leave from Nebraska. I know some people have talked
20:31
about adding a fourth quarterback. I don't personally see that happening or think that
20:36
that's necessary because I just, we've talked about that. I see a guy wanting to come here to
20:40
know that he's probably not even going to get a chance to play. I mean. Exactly. That's exactly
20:44
right, Danny. I don't see that, you know, unless you get a guy that comes and plus they don't have
20:48
scholarships. I mean, they don't really have scholarship rooms. Are you going to try to
20:52
it's going to have to be somebody like a walk-on that's going to take an NIL deal that, you know
20:56
basically knows they're not going to play very much. And you already kind of have the veteran in Heinrich Harburg who, you know, like Danny said, he's been playing, by all accounts, he's
21:03
really stepped up his game. So, to me, they just needed a veteran quarterback and they already have
21:08
a guy who won five games as a starter for him last year. So, if they need, if they're in a
21:12
tough situation, that's a pretty good guy to turn to. Yeah. If there was a veteran that wanted to
21:17
come and be a clipboard holder for an NIL deal, sure. You know, but I don't see that happening
21:21
So, no, I don't either. And, you know, the fact, honestly, in my opinion, the fact that Harburg
21:26
stayed committed to this program is, is, was enough, you know, of a surprise in and of itself
21:32
But I don't see, I don't see anybody really, you know, any big name moving or leaving or any big
21:38
additions. Are we over the, are we going to have to cut at some point? I mean, because I don't think
21:45
it really matters until August and then, you know, they can do things with some NIL stuff and whatever
21:50
So, I mean, they are over, but, you know, Matt Rule never seems to be worried about it. So
21:54
I'm not too worried, but I don't see them adding, you know, maybe if the right, you know
21:59
if there's a multi-year transfer that they really think can be, you know, a true impact player or
22:03
starter, you know, you can't, you can't say no to anytime you get a big time talent, but
22:07
I really don't see them. I'd be surprised if they added anybody in the transfer portal, unless it's
22:12
you know, just like a long snapper type, just, just throwing out some, like some, some, some
22:18
position like that maybe. But on the basketball side of things, a lot of, you know, a lot of
22:23
visits, a lot of things happening, you know, still, still no word on Rick Mass. Actually
22:29
you know, I'm wondering when that might happen. Further might be some injury concerns there too
22:33
because I know he missed some time at the end of last season. So, I'm not exactly sure what his
22:38
status is going to be for next season, which I think is going to be important, but I did
22:42
they did host, you know, a point guard this weekend that I actually know quite a bit about
22:46
Raleigh Wooster is his name, and he played at Utah last year, Utah State. Before that
22:51
he's actually from Missoula, Montana. So, I've covered, I've covered him in person. I've interviewed him before. I've watched him play quite a bit, followed his college career, because
22:59
there's not that many kids from Montana that play D1 basketball. And he, I think it would be a
23:04
perfect point guard for Nebraska. He's a, he's a pass first point guard. He's a defensive point
23:08
guard. He's 6'4". And if you look at his numbers, his defensive win shares are kind of like off the
23:14
charts, you know, for, in terms of like looking at Nebraska's, you know, roster last year, they
23:19
could not really, like the Wade Taylor, they had nobody who could check Wade Taylor. And you could
23:23
that was so glaring to me before that matchup. Who's also under the transfer portal. I know. I don't know why I would call him right immediately. I mean, holy cow
23:30
Yeah. I don't know. I don't know why he would enter the transfer. Like, it seemed like he had a big role for the Aggies last season. I don't
23:37
I mean, maybe just wants to go see, you know, what the payday is like. I don't know. I mean
23:41
there's gotta be somebody that's like, hey, we'll pay you a crap ton of money, but, or he just assumes that that'll happen
23:47
You notice the coaches are starting to wear 1890 stuff a lot more now
23:51
I did see that. John Cook was, I think he's the first coach that's been pictured with one
23:55
in a long time. Anyways, I think Sean Callahan runs since like 2022. It was good to see him at
24:02
the runs. You know, made me a little jealous. I wish I was at runs up, but I wish my all the gear, where all the gear, where all the hats, all the sales pitches. Now that Trev has
24:10
gone and, and NIL is going to become more of a thing. Do whatever you can to keep promoting the
24:16
collectives and the brands. And it's good to see it. But anyway, I totally, I totally derailed you
24:23
from your transfer portal talk, but. Oh no, you're good. But no, that, that does make sense
24:28
And it's especially in the basketball transfer portal, you've got to have, if you don't have
24:32
NIL, you really don't have a chance because that's just kind of how it works. But another
24:37
name I wanted to mention but yeah, at Wooster, I think would be, he averaged like 10 points a
24:42
game. He shoots like 28% from three, which is kind of strange to me because he shoots pretty
24:47
good at free, pretty high free throw percentage. So I feel like he could shoot a little bit better there. And, and frankly, I think that that's why this would be a perfect fit, because if you want
24:55
to, if you want to shoot better as a basketball player, as a guard, I don't know that there's a
24:59
team better to play for than Fred Hoiberg. Like I guarantee you, Fred will make him a better shooter
25:05
And the rest of his game, he averages over four assists per game, strong defender, 6'4", like I
25:10
said, a true actual point guard. And this team hasn't had one of those, you know, I guess since
25:15
Sam Griesel left. So that would be, I think, a nice move. They also are going to be hosting Igor
25:22
Milicich, I hope is his name. I hope I pronounced that right. But a 6'10", he's listed as a forward
25:28
He's more of a wing. He's not like a post up type guy. He's more of a three point shooting type, but
25:33
average 12 points, eight, eight and a half rebounds, one block, one assist, shot 37% from
25:39
three, 81% at the free throw line. So yeah, that would be, you know, an exciting piece and kind of
25:47
interesting sort of like Bryce Williams, a guy that could probably play, you know, multiple
25:51
positions. I mean, some in the portal, you know, some of the kind of things, some of the accounts
25:57
are, you know, have listed him, you know, scouting him as a guard almost too. So he would be another
26:02
interesting prospect, excuse me, I'm having a tough time talking today. Especially at the guard position. I mean, 6'10", shoots fairly well. I mean, that would just be
26:12
another, you know, type of, you know, athleticism and dynamic play. Milicich was an interesting name
26:20
that you brought up and it's going to be interesting to see, you know, Gavin Griffiths
26:25
visiting on Friday. So I'm wondering, you know, how that went and they are actively looking for
26:33
players in the portal and it's just going to be, like I said last week, a matter of putting
26:37
the pieces together, but it's not for their lack of trying. Yeah, if you got Booster and Gavin Griffiths, I feel like those guys could come in and start
26:46
you know, right away basically. So then you could have, that could be your back court and then you
26:51
could have Bryce Williams and Jamon Gary as your front court, you know, and then Rinkmas if he's
26:55
there, Andrew Morgan if he's not. I know Frankie Fidler's going to decide here shortly. So probably
27:02
that decision will probably be out before we even post this podcast. So we'll see how that goes. I don't think, yes, because he can play right away
27:08
Yeah, or Michigan State it seems like. I don't think, I've heard some buzz about Nebraska late
27:13
so I mean, don't be shocked, I guess, but I don't buy it. I heard Creighton was offering him more of a bench role, so he wouldn't go there, but
27:20
I mean, honestly, if I want to play in March, I'm going to go play under Tommy Zou. I mean
27:26
that dude is a March wizard. And I, well, I think just too, it's, I said this from the beginning, you know, I just
27:32
I have a hard time seeing what, you know, if he comes in and plays, then either Bryce or Jamon
27:36
Gary's going to have to go to the bench. So, I mean, if one of those guys hadn't come back, I think it would have been a lot easier to sell the role, but I just think there's going to be
27:43
a log jam there, which kind of, you know, hurts Nebraska too. But, and I, you know, I would like
27:48
to see him maybe contact Wade Taylor, because man, if you put him in Fred Hoiberg's offense
27:53
like holy cow, that guy would be dynamic. At the same time though, he's not a great defensive
27:57
player. So, you know, it would be nice if they could get Wooster, like it would be nice to
28:02
actually have a point guard that you could feel good about, you know, guarding, not just point
28:06
guards, but you know, that, that six, three, six, four combo guard in the big 10 that Nebraska just
28:10
has had so much trouble with the last few, you know, maybe they could have put him on Terrence
28:14
Shannon and he would have done a decent cause having Keisai Tominaga on Terrence Shannon is
28:18
not the right thing. At this point, just give me an athletic guard who can score points because
28:24
because we needed that desperately against Illinois, against, you know, Texas A&M
28:30
because Wade Taylor lit us up. I get the defensive, I mean, I get the defensive component for sure
28:36
but if you're going to outweigh your defensive flaws with offense and you're an athletic
28:42
you know, really good shooter, like Taylor is, I would take that all day
28:48
Oh, I would take him a hundred percent just because, I mean, you can just put him in a ball
28:53
screen and he can just dominate the game. So it'll be, I'm interested to see where he goes and
28:57
maybe if Nebraska does contact him, but with, I just think with Griffis and his shooting ability
29:05
and, and you take Raleigh Wooster and all the stuff that he does, if he could become
29:09
a slightly better shooter, which I think is very possible under Fred Hoiberg and Griffis too
29:14
I think would be a great player under Hoiberg. I think that would be a really, a really, you know
29:19
high level backcourt for Nebraska. It has a lot of potential. And so we'll see, I feel like
29:24
you know, there's going to be some news hopefully coming soon with Rink Mast, you know, whether he's
29:28
going to declare for the draft or, you know, come back to Nebraska. I don't know if that injury has
29:32
any, you know, lingering impacts. I've seen some message board talk about that. So don't really
29:37
want to get too much into it, you know, before there's some actual reporting on it, but definitely
29:41
seems like that decision is taken longer than one would expect it to. And at least if he doesn't
29:46
decide to come back, they do have a player like Morgan who they can slide into that spot. So
29:52
it's not really a must get situation. It's more about, we would love to have you back. And
29:57
you know, that's what you want when you're recruiting and you want to be prepared for
30:02
you know, whatever happens. And so Nebraska is sitting decently either way with the situation
30:07
however it plays out. Yeah. And William Kyle's still out there, the South Dakota State forward
30:12
from Nebraska. Farrell Payne from Minnesota is another guy that they've been in the mix with
30:17
So I want him. Yeah, I'd like him to, I think he would be either one of those guys I would be happy
30:22
with. Multiple years of development and, you know, decent size for the position. And is familiar with
30:28
Big Ten play as you kind of talked about last week. So yeah, an average 10 points a game
30:34
you know, you just, you need the Big Tens, a tough conference. I mean, it is. And Fred
30:38
to his credit, it took him a year or two, but he's adjusted to that. And I don't think
30:43
I really, I would say, you know, they need to add two more bigs if they, you know, so either
30:48
you know, they need to add mass back in somebody else. So I still think they're going to have some
30:52
work there because you need, you need three guys that are like six, 10 to play in the Big Ten
30:56
or you're going to have a tough time. So at any rate, I think that's what we got here for today
31:02
I better get rolling you guys, but thanks so much for joining us on this Monday episode. We'll come
31:05
back on Wednesday. I'm sure there'll be a lot of talk about, you know, basketball transfer portal
31:10
probably some surprising football transfers, not hopefully at Nebraska, but just on the larger
31:14
scale. Yeah. Fingers crossed for Nebraska, but I think we're pretty, I think we're pretty set. So
31:20
at any rate, thanks for checking us out. If you don't already subscribe to the channel
