Hey, Husker fans, welcome back to the Husker Big Red YouTube channel
0:04
I'm Chris Peterson, and joining me as always is my co-host, Danny Gillette. And we're back for another episode of the podcast here on Wednesday
0:10
We got Troy Dannen introduced himself to Husker Nation officially on Tuesday
0:15
So have some thoughts on that. There's some transfer portal happenings, recruiting, and of course, spring ball
0:20
So we'll touch on all that stuff. Before we do, please hit the Like button on this video

0:33
And Danny, how are you doing this morning, man? Good. I'm a little sleepy, but it's never a bad day or morning
0:39
to talk Nebraska athletics. And as always, there's a lot of news to cover
0:44
And we just had a show on Monday. So it's just never a dull moment around here, which is good and bad
0:51
Yeah, man. Yeah, spring football. We got the transfer portals humming on the Nebraska side of things
0:57
Troy Dannen getting introduced. Football team hitting the practice field. So that's been kind of fun
1:03
Not that we've, there hasn't been a ton of rumblings. Of course, I haven't been on the Twitter as much as I usually am
1:08
or X, I guess, or whatever you want to call it. But I have no life and I'm on there all the time
1:12
And there hasn't been a lot of rumblings. So, yeah, I mean, I have been checking it. But Thursday, I think probably when they get media access for the first time
1:19
we'll see some more rumblings or hear some more rumblings, rather. Yeah. Like what
1:23
It'd be nice if the insiders had some, you know, pay for these message boards, man, and get nothing
1:27
Like what's going on here? I should have at least some practice Intel, although I mean, they haven't even
1:32
although they have they have like partial pads, you know, no, no
1:36
So no, not full pads, I guess, up to this point. So you can only learn so much, you know, when you have like, you know
1:42
just partial you're not fully padded up, I guess I would say. And the social media team is conveniently leaving Dylan Riola
1:49
out of a lot of these videos that they're showing. So maybe maybe they're keeping the Ferrari in the garage until
1:55
spring, the spring game. They did. I mean, they did the first day they had that one where they
2:00
it was like eight videos at once. And you had to follow it really closely
2:04
I posted on how to be a great dot com. But if you watch his little video and just stay on that screen
2:09
you'll watch him complete about a 50 yard pass, like one of the most beautiful rainbows you've ever seen in your life
2:14
I'm not sure who caught it. I couldn't tell the number of who caught it, but I haven't seen anything else
2:18
Have you from him? Like no, no, no. They did show Heinrich Harburg, you know, pass yesterday
2:25
which I saw and I did see some videos or pictures, excuse me
2:28
Dante Dowdell was looking jacked. I mean, that dude looks like an absolute stud
2:33
So I want to see him run. I think I saw maybe a video of him run the ball, too
2:37
It's hard to see their numbers sometimes. And they kind of I feel like they maybe do that on purpose to kind of
2:42
you know, it's not like they gave you a clear. Sometimes you have to like kind of freeze frame it to see the number
2:46
And then I still can't see the number because, you know, when you're like your jerseys that mesh, you know, and so it's like I'm like, is that a two or three
2:53
And but at any rate, it was fun to see some guys. I saw Thomas Fedoni making a catch
3:00
So, I mean, yeah, not a lot of not a lot of like rumblings or anything yet
3:04
But yeah, Thursday is going to be Thursday is going to be the press, you know, the press thing
3:09
Yeah, the I mean, I thought Harburg's pass looked a little bit better
3:13
but yeah, a little wobble to it, you know, but I mean. Well, there's certain camera angles that you can have that that makes it look better
3:19
I used to watch while I saw videos of the Miami Dolphins social media team
3:25
making it look like to a tag of ILO could throw it 80 yards on it
3:29
with an absolute dart like Patrick Holmes. And we all know that's not the case. So, I mean, these social media teams are pretty good
3:35
And but but in any event, it was just good to see a lot of the guys out on the field
3:40
Like you said, Fedoni, I thought he looked, you know, for the picture. He looked, you know, jacked and healthy
3:45
And as you alluded to on Monday, he could be in line for a big year
3:51
Yeah, I really, you know, I've been kind of been pounding the table for him for a long time, but, you know, I really liked how he played
3:57
at the end of last season. And I think just, man, if you get a really good quarterback
4:01
it really makes a difference, especially for a tight end. And a tight end can be a quarterback's best friend, too
4:06
So I think that having him and Carter Nelson, I mean, I really hope that they
4:11
you know, embrace that, you know, positionless offense type thing that they've been talking about, because even going back to that Polynesian bowl
4:17
like some of the, you know, flare screens, some of the quick screens, just getting the football into Carter Nelson's hand like don't
4:23
He doesn't have to learn how to run all these routes. Just throw him the throw him a one yard pass and see what the guy can do
4:28
Like that's Nebraska is starting to have those kind of athletes on offense. And that's pretty exciting because it's been
4:33
it's been a while since we've had someone like that. I mean, maybe even like one Dale Robinson back in the day
4:37
And of course, we never didn't give him the ball the right way either. So he left. Right. And conveniently, he went pro after Kentucky
4:46
Who could have seen that? No. Anyway, you know, it's kind of interesting that you mentioned
4:50
just give Carter Nelson the ball and go to work. And I'm not comparing him by any means
4:54
But I kind of remember, you know, seeing Rob Gronkowski. Brady would just dump them, you know, dump the ball off
5:02
and then just let him be an absolute beast dragging four or five defenders. So sometimes all you have to do
5:08
with these playmakers is just give them the ball and see what they can do. And it's not sexy, you know, clean football with pristine routes
5:16
and impeccable timing. It's just, you know, meatheads, you know, running down the field
5:20
you know, dragging defenders and doing what they do best. And I'm excited to see what Nelson does
5:26
And I think him and Fedoni could be a very dangerous combo
5:32
Yeah, and I feel like people are going to underestimate, you know, his speed in terms of who they're going to try to, you know, cover with him
5:37
And I also feel like Nebraska, you know, their receivers, they block
5:41
I mean, that's that's something that they, you know, really emphasize. And, you know, it's just going to be interesting to see how they kind of use
5:48
all those different pieces. But I'm super excited to see, you know, Carter Nelson getting on campus
5:53
Of course, that won't be until, you know, this summer he's finishing up there
5:56
But a lot of a lot of excitement, though. It'll be fun to see, you know, what Matt Rule and all these guys say on Thursday
6:03
But as far as spring football talk, that's pretty much all that we got
6:06
We don't have a ton of inside information, but there will be some more stuff coming soon
6:11
I have to think, you know, in terms of what's what's going on. But, you know, the best way to judge is with our own eyes, which we'll get
6:17
you know, next month at Lincoln Memorial Stadium, what, April 27th, right
6:22
Yep. And I wonder, you know, I just saw that Ohio State and Michigan are having their games broadcast on Fox
6:27
I'm wondering where the Nebraska spring game is. Have they said is it going to be on the Big Ten network
6:32
I'm going to have to look that up. I don't know off the top of my head. But one thing I did, I'm just looking at my calendar here really quickly
6:39
One one thing that is kind of of note is that there's something with the transfer portal on April
6:47
Let's see. April 15th. I believe that's the first wave, actually, of players that can enter the transfer portal following spring
6:59
So I'm wondering if there's any movement. I kind of don't like having the spring game as late as it is
7:06
you know, almost towards May even. But I'll be interested to see if maybe they bring anybody in
7:13
or anybody leaves prior to the spring game. And that kind of evens things out
7:18
Yeah. So that's going to be the spring transfer portal window, I think, is April 15th to April 30th
7:24
So that's the second time frame where guys are able to enter the portal
7:28
You've seen a couple of already said that they're going to enter the portal. I mean, Kate, Kate and Proctor, I guess, would be the the best example
7:36
because the transfer portal is actually not open right now. So he has to wait until April 15th to make that move official
7:45
So that, you know, like if Emmett Johnson, I know, has been a guy that's been talked about, like if he's going to make a move, that would be then
7:50
you know, if there's a there's a, you know, position Nebraska wants to add
7:54
you know, potentially they could look at that. But I feel like they're pretty solid. I mean, unless there's like an injury, I mean, you never want to say no
8:01
If a if a big time talent, you know, comes available and he could help your team
8:04
But I'm just thinking, you know, I mean, cornerback, maybe if there was like a true like shut down corner
8:11
But I mean, I think Nebraska on the depth chart, I feel pretty good on both sides of the ball, really
8:16
Yeah, this is some of the most depth that that we've had in years on both sides of the ball
8:22
And, you know, I'm very interested to see how the running back room shakes out just due to
8:29
and we talked a little bit about this on Monday, but it's worth repeating just due to the injuries of Johnson and Ervin as it relates to spring practice
8:37
And then Emmitt Johnson, you know, as you kind of alluded to earlier
8:41
potentially moving. So I'm wondering if a you know, a big time running back
8:51
or another running back wants to come to Nebraska to replace Johnson
8:55
Should he go if that's a possibility? You know, covering, you know, the the Miami Hurricanes, like I do for
9:05
for another website as well, they have a loaded running back room and Henry Parrish has already entered the portal
9:10
So I'm not saying that he's going to come to Nebraska by any means. But I do think there will be, you know, a bunch of backs
9:17
you know, available by the time, you know, the spring transfer portal window officially opens
9:24
Yeah, it will be. It'll be interesting. I mean, I know like Hayes Fawcett, you know, you're a big fan of Danny
9:29
But oh, yeah, I know. He he tweeted, you know, he always plays it up a little bit more than it's going to be
9:35
But like he tweets out that, you know, I mean, it's like Joe Rogan
9:39
you know, doing that thing was like, oh, you know, like all shocked. And then it's like some and then it ends up never being
9:45
I just don't think the hype ever, you know, reaches what he says it's going to be like, like, I'm going to be shocked
9:49
And then it's like some it's like Will Howard entering the transfer portal. Like, yeah, no, no crap
9:54
Will Howard left because Avery Johnson's better. The Kansas state told him he's not going to start anymore
9:58
Like I mean, so but it's all about the engagement in the clicks
10:02
You know that. Come on. Yeah. Well, there's some that are really good at the engagement farming
10:06
They know how to how to make people mad. But at any rate, not us. So if anybody watches this and has any tips for engagement farming
10:12
leave it in the comments and take note. He did say it was going to be, you know, like wild
10:21
I don't know one of those adjectives. So, I mean, there'll probably be like two or three good players
10:25
that actually go into the transfer portal. And maybe maybe he was talking about Caden Proctor
10:30
And there's been some rumors about, you know, Quinn Sean Judkins, the guy that went to Ohio State, the running back
10:35
But I think people, you know, it's what happened with the Caden Proctor thing
10:39
is now all these fan bases think that like that's going to happen again. You know, like like Caleb Downs is going to go back to Alabama from Ohio State
10:47
It's like that's not I mean, yeah, it could happen. But I don't see you know, I just don't see like guys leaving out of the portal
10:54
But I mean, maybe they will. Who knows? But I think that's more of a one time deal
10:58
And can I say something on that? I don't care if you're a Nebraska fan, Iowa fan, whatever
11:01
Don't tweet a recruits mom and tell her that, you know, her son
11:05
is a complete failure because he left your team. Like, give me a break
11:09
Yeah, they went way. They went they went totally nuts, man. Like, you know, I'm not going to name I'm not going to name him on this show here
11:17
But, you know, tweeting out Malachi Coleman's mom back in the day, too
11:20
It's like, what are we doing, guys? Like, these are people's families
11:24
And just, you know, at the end of the day, we're just rooting
11:29
for a bunch of college kids who I was a college kid once, you know, can't make decisions to save their lives and have difficult decisions to make
11:35
And it's just don't tweet at recruits unless it's something positive. And even then, maybe don't do that as much, too
11:43
You know, I don't know. Yeah, no, nothing good's going to come out. I mean, for one, you just look like a complete jerk
11:48
I mean, there's it's like the people who go after it, like, you know, the NFL players that miss the field goal and stuff
11:55
It's like, yeah, you don't think that guy feels you don't think the Bills guy, you know, felt absolutely horrible about himself, you know, after he missed the game
12:01
He doesn't need you threatening his life over a over a football game. It's like I understand maybe you
12:06
you lost a lot of money or something because you bet on it or, you know, I mean, I get it like I'm a hardcore fan
12:11
I'm a total psychopath, but I've never threatened anybody's life. I can say that for sure
12:16
You know, like there are there are limits like just I mean, you have to
12:20
You know, I don't I don't understand like what drives people to, you know, to feel that way
12:25
Like I do get upset at players, but then I, you know, I'm like, yeah, that it's not like that guy wanted to fail
12:30
I mean, had you ever been in a position, you know, just talking to generally
12:34
where you were like, yep, I'm going to you know, I'm going to mess up on purpose. I'm going to suck at my job today
12:38
You know, it's nobody does that, especially when you've got, you know, your entire career on the line
12:43
And, you know, so anyway, kind of off on a tangent there. But some people just think it's a worthwhile tangent
12:48
Yeah. Sometimes people just need to smell, smell some fresh air, man
12:53
Feel some feel some grass under your feet. I know it's like you're it's like you're probably in your mom's basement
12:59
eating like hot pockets and like not showering for five days. And you're over here yelling at an accomplished athlete
13:06
because he decided to leave your team. It's just come on. Come on, man
13:10
Come on, man. Who wants to play for Kirk Ference anyway? So, I mean, should should you be should you be shocked
13:15
Iowa fans. I mean, a good offensive player doesn't want to play at Iowa
13:19
I'm just kidding. But, you know, unless it's a tight end, I think, you know, we might
13:24
I'm not going to say we're tight end you, but I think we're going to have a lot of talent coming in as a physician in the coming years
13:30
We're getting especially if we can get, you know, Chase Lofton in this class
13:34
which, you know, might not be easy, but but you know, it wasn't easy to get Malachi or Carter Nelson and we got them
13:39
So, you know, but Chase Lofton and Christian Jones just like buckle up because those aren't going to be easy recruitments to win
13:45
Christian Jones has like two. I'm a little nervous about the Jones commitment. I'll be honest
13:50
I am, too. Yeah. I mean, any time you're going to Notre Dame twice, you know, that that's worrisome
13:54
And he hasn't been back to Nebraska this spring. That's the other thing that's kind of, you know, and I don't think
13:59
there's anything, you know, to say like he's not doing it on purpose
14:03
But at some point it's like, OK, why aren't you getting me back on campus? Like, is there a reason
14:07
I don't I just I want to see him at some point in the next few weeks
14:11
if he's not if he's not on campus at some point in the spring, then I'll be a little bit worried
14:15
Well, I think the staff has done a pretty good job of identifying, you know, players
14:19
You know, we're going to extend an offer to a player. We're going to see if he wants to come here. How many visits
14:24
And then if he doesn't show much interest, we're going to move on to the next guy. They're very good at their timing of moving on to the next guy
14:30
And I think that's helped in recruiting as they're more prepared. And, you know, they're able to
14:35
they're able to kind of, you know, always have a plan B. And, you know, I think when you take a look at this
14:42
June visit list, yeah, sorry, went off on a football tangent. It's all right. We'll just switch the we'll switch
14:49
If I made more sense to transfer from spring football to recruiting anyway. So we'll just go that part of it
14:53
I think when you take a look at, you know, some of these, you know, we had some receiver targets in January who aren't even on the board now
15:00
One who is on the board for the wide receiver group is Corey Sims
15:05
I believe he's coming June 16th, if I'm not mistaken. Again, looking at my calendar
15:12
Yeah, he is the same weekend as Cortez Mills. Just which is interesting because they're probably
15:18
I would love if they land both. They're probably not going to, but I'd be happy with either
15:23
I mean, it'd be it'd be pretty legit if they got both. But because Corey Sims, I mean, according to on three industry rankings
15:31
he's three 30th. Cortez Mills is one twenty three, which that's way too low
15:35
He's way better than that. He's like, I'll tell you this, Cortez Mills to me is like Xavier worthy
15:41
I mean, the Nebraska coaches have said, you know, Devante Mills, you know, or the guy from Alabama
15:48
that was really, really good. I think that was his name. No, that's Devante
15:52
What was his name? I cannot remember the last name now. Nothing. The guy who won the high anyway
15:57
Devante Smith. Yeah. Yeah. I said Mills because, of course, of course, because Mills is his last name
16:03
But at any rate, this kid can absolutely fly. And I don't understand how he's ranked, like by anybody outside the top 100
16:10
I think he should be a top 50 kid, in my opinion. So he was the only games
16:15
Yeah, exactly. Yeah. They rank kids without watching. They want they watch them in the underwear Olympics
16:20
You know, I had to clear my throat there. But that was a little bit
16:23
But no, but I agree, like some of these guys are in a way too low
16:27
And then, you know, I think, honestly, just the fact that when you look at the wide receiver room now, you know, a lot of the best programs
16:35
stack depth and at some positions, not all positions, but at some positions
16:39
Nebraska is really starting to stack tangible depth. And I think that's really important for building the program
16:45
And it's not something we've had. Let's see. So I've been covering the team for years
16:49
I've never seen tangible depth being stacked. And then I'm sure it's been a long time for you since you've seen that
16:54
Yeah, it's been. Yes, really, especially on offense. And some of those positions that has been a very, very long time
17:00
Also, you know, on the April 27th, the spring game weekend, Emmanuel Choice is going to be here for another four star receiver
17:07
for an official visit. Terry Shelton is going to be here for an official visit
17:11
He's unranked, but I mean, six for 200 pounds. So, you know, I'm not sure why he's not ranked, but you know, it is what it is
17:18
Michael Terry, five star coming in that weekend. According to the 24 seven composite rankings, Elijah Barnes, of course, TJ Latif
17:26
I wanted to talk about, you know, he said Nebraska's still been recruiting him. You know, the hardest out of anybody right now
17:31
So they're they're basically I mean, Nebraska feels like they're in the lead with TJ Latif
17:36
I know Texas and some other schools are coming on, though. So, I mean, you can never
17:40
you can never feel too good in recruiting, especially with the, you know, really good quarterback
17:45
You know, Jack Lang was just on campus. He was. We've talked about him before
17:49
Six, eight to seventy five. You know, he's going to be coming this summer
17:53
But Notre Dame's the leader right now. But, you know, getting him on campus, he got to see some of the the practice
18:00
You know, we we have the five star quarterback. So, I mean, I feel like Dylan Rayola is going to be a selling point
18:05
for these kids to, you know, just like an NFL free agency. Players want to play with a big time quarterback
18:11
And I think this wide receiver group is going to be, you know, a selling point. Not maybe not as big as Rayola, but, you know
18:17
still, when you take a look at some of these receivers and if they develop properly, you know, I think the wide receiver development
18:23
is going to be a huge selling point. And, you know, it's going to be really interesting to see
18:29
how they approach the quarterback recruiting and who they land and if they can continue the string of successful quarterbacks
18:35
in the program, Rayola, Kalen, and then who's ever next? Because that hasn't you know, that type of tangible quarterback depth
18:42
has not happened in quite some time. So it's yeah, I mean, right now in there, another thing we should talk about, too
18:49
for that June 21st visit date, you know, that Corey Sims is coming to
18:54
Excuse me. No, he's coming the week before that. I'm sorry. But we also have Jamarian Parker, who has been committed to Arkansas
19:02
You know, I said it before, like this, this dude's going to, you know, I really didn't think he was going to stick with his commitment to Arkansas
19:07
Two guys decommitted on the same day at a Cardinal Ritter prep
19:12
Prep, you know, six foot one eighty five ranked three thirty four
19:16
in the on three rankings, I think he's pretty similar to that 24 seven
19:20
But, you know, very talented running back. And I feel like Nebraska is in the pole position now
19:24
I'm sure some other teams are going to get involved, but I like where they stand with Jamarian Parker, the four star running back
19:29
I would definitely watch him closely. I think, you know, they kind of need another running back because, yes
19:36
I know there are bodies in the room like Gabe and Ramir, but it all goes back to their health
19:41
And, you know, I think that's going to be, you know, something that this coaching
19:45
staff or, you know, has already considered. And, you know, I think Parker, I think Nebraska has a very good shot
19:52
at landing Parker, but we'll see. We'll see what happens. Let's see. He's going to officially visit, like you said, on June 21st
20:00
And so, you know, it could be shaping up for another big month of June
20:05
kind of like last year, maybe not as many commitments because that was absolutely nuts. Right
20:09
But, you know, making inroads with these, you know, recruits and, you know, trying to continue to stack and build
20:16
And Parker would be a great addition. Yeah, they're building some momentum, you know, like you said
20:21
not a ton of commitments right now, but they will start to come. You know, we started to see some last year during spring ball
20:26
and then more during that April and June. You know, June is June, May, you know, July, August
20:31
That's when a lot of the majority, I would say, of high school you know, recruits make their decisions
20:35
That's just how the process, you know, tends to work. Some are sooner than others, some are later than others
20:40
but the majority fall the summer before that season, the senior season
20:44
I did want to mention before we move on a crystal ball, a new crystal ball came out last week for Bryson Weber
20:50
a six three hundred eighty five pound quarterback out of Missouri City, Texas
20:54
unranked right now. But, you know, we've seen that, you know, we've said this many times, though
20:59
I trust Matt rules, evaluations over the 24 seven sports guys. So don't worry about that
21:04
But a strong position and he's coming for an official visit that same that same weekend, June 21st
21:10
So Jack Lang, Jalen Williams, going to be there. Zayden Gentry. So, you know, lots of, you know, Pierce Mewberry, Connor Booth
21:17
Caden Vermont, so lots of big guys coming in that weekend. Also Raheem Hutchins, another wide receiver
21:21
So in Nebraska, I feel they're they're doing a good job on the recruiting end of things. They just have to, you know, keep moving the ball forward
21:27
and starting to close some of those commitments. But you usually have to get a couple of visits before that happens
21:31
So I feel very good about the twenty twenty five class right now. Absolutely
21:35
And, you know, they they only have four commitments, I believe, but they're very solid players
21:41
And, you know, I think, again, we talked about this last year
21:45
You know, we were already kind of seeing, obviously, the twenty twenty four class
21:50
you know, kind of putting a bow on that, maybe another edition here or there
21:53
but really pushing aggressively for the twenty twenty five class and not doing it in a way
22:00
that feels last minute or rushed, you know, and it's nice to kind of
22:05
be able to fully focus recruiting wise on the twenty twenty five class
22:10
knowing that you already have, you know, the twenty twenty four talent here
22:14
Twenty twenty three, obviously, you know, in their second year on the field for many
22:20
So, you know, it's kind of good to see there's organization in recruiting
22:25
And this is not something that the coaching staff has done really well. They have Matt Rule is he's nothing if not organized
22:32
He's a man with a plan. So, you know, that's been a very good thing for Nebraska
22:36
And now to Fred Hoiberg's plan to rebuild this roster, get it back to the NCAA tournament
22:41
hopefully win a game in the NCAA tournament for the first time ever. Maybe maybe just, you know, be competitive for an entire game
22:48
because I'm tired of watching, you know, all every NCAA game I've ever watched this program
22:52
It's over before like halfway through the first half. So at any rate to, you know, get through the pain, talking through the pain
22:58
But there has been a lot of, you know, transfer portal movement since we did our show on Monday
23:03
Romel Boyd Jr. I probably said that wrong. He entered the transfer portal
23:08
Six six guard, you know, just didn't, you know, get a lot of time. He redshirted last year
23:13
Eli Rice was kind of the big surprise. He played in 17 games this year, but he averaged four point two points per game
23:19
You know, hit some nice threes, kind of showed some promise, but didn't play at all in the Big Ten tournament, didn't play in the NCAA tournament
23:26
So I feel like he, you know, just is, you know, eyeing maybe a bigger opportunity somewhere else
23:32
Fred Hoiberg did say that, you know, he thinks his best basketball is ahead of him. So if there's one surprise or one, you know, move that maybe Nebraska
23:39
didn't want to happen, it's probably Eli Rice. But you can understand it. And then Blaise Cade, the big guy yesterday entered the transfer portal
23:46
So Nebraska's got four for open scholarships right now. What are your thoughts on some of those departures
23:51
You know how much I love Eli Rice and people who listen know how much I love Eli Rice
23:56
So I'm so I want to think a little bit. I really thought he was extremely athletic and had a lot of potential
24:01
I remember I believe it was the game against Iowa on a Friday back in
24:07
was it January or February, if I'm not mistaken, when they went on the road
24:11
and, you know, played in Iowa and he showed flashes there. It was January because I remember there was a huge snowstorm
24:19
But anyway, you know, and I thought he could, you know, potentially be another offensive threat
24:25
But at the same time, if, you know, he sees the writing on the wall
24:29
and he likes to go somewhere else, it's better to do it now while you're still developing and you have
24:35
you know, your full career ahead of you than just to just sit on the bench and waste your years away
24:40
So I'm happy for him that he's going to get another opportunity. I wish he stayed
24:44
And then, you know, Blaise, I'm not really too surprised. He's been he was in the program for a little bit
24:51
Didn't really get a ton of playing time. And Lloyd just never I know he battled injuries early on
24:58
but he was just never able to kind of, you know, assert himself on this roster
25:02
And granted, this roster was very talented, especially the last two seasons
25:06
But, you know, again, it's about making the most of what you have in your career
25:11
because, you know, for a lot of these guys, you know, college basketball
25:15
is their last stop and they want to try to maximize the eligibility
25:19
and things like that. So I I'm not mad at all for Lloyd for transferring
25:24
And I'm sad that Rice is transferring and I hope Blaise gets a good opportunity
25:29
But, you know, now it gives the roster, you know, a chance to add some new talent
25:34
And there are a lot of big names in the transfer portal
25:39
So this could benefit Nebraska basketball in the long run. Yeah, and one of those names I mentioned in last night
25:47
Husker Big Red dot com that Nebraska has been in contact with William Kyle, the third, a six foot nine, 215 pound forward out of Bellevue, Nebraska
25:55
played at South Dakota State the last two years was the summit defensive player of the year last year
26:00
On average, one point six blocks per game, 13.1 points. And really, if you look at his stat line, he's like a Derek Walker clone
26:08
and doesn't have the super high assist rate, one point seven assists, six point six rebounds
26:13
But if you look at didn't hasn't attempted a single three point shot in his career
26:17
which Derek Walker wasn't a three point shooter either. But shoot last season, he shot 62 percent, you know, from the field
26:23
So, I mean, if you're talking about a guy that can score around the basket, who can, you know, distribute the ball a little bit
26:29
who could maybe play in that, you know, high post role that Fred has kind of developed for rink mass first for Derek Walker the previous year
26:35
And then just a guy that can, you know, bring a presence on defense
26:39
I mean, one point six blocks per game. I don't think that's going to translate quite to the big time
26:44
I mean, six, nine in the Summit League is probably different than six, nine in the big ten. But but still, I mean, you don't win defensive player of the year
26:51
just because of that. And I feel like he would be a nice piece. He could he could fill in for Desai Alec that, you know, he left
26:58
you know, very similar build, similar interior players. So I feel like that would be, you know, a great fit
27:03
But he's got like 20 schools have reached out. And there's a lot of high major programs
27:07
So it's going to be a tough pull. But, you know, Nebraska has done a really good job with in-state
27:13
transfers the last two cycles, you know, like Sam Griesel. And, you know, we saw Josiah last year
27:17
So hopefully they can reel in another because he would be he's probably my top guy right now in terms of the transfer
27:23
portal targets for Nebraska. I mean, I really would like Terrace Reed, too. But I just almost feel like this guy would be a better fit next to rank mast
27:31
Yeah, man. You know, I think that's going to be the key for this roster
27:37
who can fit best with what they already have. And, you know, I feel like the coaching staff has done a good job
27:44
of that over the past two seasons of, you know, figuring things out. But, you know, we'll just have to see
27:50
We'll just have to see what happens. I think there's going to be a lot of options for the program
27:54
And, you know, coming off an NCAA tournament appearance. Yes. Even though it was a loss
27:58
I mean, that still means something. And it shows to recruits that, you know, this program is headed
28:03
in the right direction. Yeah, it really is. There's been some other, you know, targets, Frankie Fidler
28:10
But I saw that he was attending a Creighton practice the other day
28:14
And to be honest with him, I feel like, you know, if CJ Wilcher comes back
28:19
I don't know what role that he would really have. So that's that's the way I feel about him
28:24
You know, just so he can shoot the ball really well. But I'd rather have a plus defender than, you know, just another three point shooter
28:30
So we'll see. I'm not saying, you know, he wouldn't be in addition. But I feel like maybe
28:35
It's the thing is, is there's there's some very important decisions like Bryce Williams, Juwan Gary, CJ
28:41
You know, he walked already. But, you know, is he going to come back? You know, I mean, if Nebraska comes back at him with the with the NIL deal
28:48
you know, I mean, would that keep him to stay? I would think so. And then, you know, rank two, because all the the thing is, is like rank mask could go
28:55
I mean, I'm not saying go in the NBA draft, but he could go play somewhere in Europe and make a pretty penny
28:58
So, you know, Nebraska's and this will be maybe a good transition to, you know, the Troy Dannen presser, because, you know, NIL was very
29:09
you know, prominent in his speech yesterday. He actually said, I will be rocking, you know, the 1889 initiative clothing more
29:18
probably more than I will Nebraska stuff. 1890 or 1890. Yeah, sorry, whatever I know
29:24
I try to make it clear before people got mad. Yeah, sorry, you guys
29:27
But at any rate, I forget what it is. But yeah, I mean, you know, and it hasn't been, you know
29:33
talked about enough probably within the athletic department. Trev, for whatever reason, was really like anti NIL kind of
29:40
So I think that that's you know, that's my big takeaway is that which is interesting
29:44
because he kind of, you know, portrayed himself as a person that was very in tune with NIL
29:51
Yeah. But we know he's a snake oil salesman, so it's not surprising even thinking about it now
29:57
Yeah, it's just it's just a total, you know, I guess a 360 or 180
30:02
from the previous, you know, mindset of that. And I think that's going to be a good thing, especially, you know
30:07
for the for the football and basketball programs, especially I feel like especially for basketball, because I mean, NIL matters for football
30:14
But I mean, in basketball, like that one or two players that you can land in the transfer portal makes such a difference
30:20
And I do think it's going to start changing a little bit because we've had this covid year and that's going to be like, you know
30:26
it's going to mean like you have guys right now that should be playing professional basketball that are like available on the transfer portal, you know
30:31
Yeah. And that that's going to stop, at least to some extent. There's not going to be, you know, you'll still have, you know
30:37
third year guys, you know, transferring somewhere for their fourth year. But you're not going to have the fifth and sixth year
30:43
all conference, all American, you know what I mean? So that'll I think that that will put an emphasis more on
30:49
you know, who's going to recruit well coming out of high school, who can develop those guys
30:53
And I feel like Fred Hoiberg is in a nice, you know, position
30:57
you know, for Nebraska to do that. Yeah, for sure. And, you know, I feel like, you know, when it comes to fundraising efforts
31:06
I know Dan was big on that in his previous stops, you know, mostly Tulane
31:12
But, you know, I think having an athletic director that kind of shares
31:17
you know, the NIL mindset, that's very open to it. That's very forward thinking
31:21
And who wants to raise money is important. And, you know, especially when you look at, you know, the the teams coming in
31:30
or, you know, the teams already here, technically, USC, UCLA and, you know, Washington and Oregon, those are all big fundraising schools
31:39
And Nebraska is going to need to do whatever it takes to keep up. And, you know, so just having a leader who's open to that
31:46
you know, fundraising and stuff like that is very important. And I think one thing, you know, that was just really
31:54
it's been interesting throughout this whole process. But, you know, we talked about Matt Ruhle having more sway
31:59
And, you know, I don't think that this hire happens without Matt Ruhle
32:03
you know, endorsing it, making it happen, you know, making the I mean
32:06
Troy Dan and pretty much said, like, you know, I want to be around winners
32:10
And Matt Ruhle's a winner. And I want to be around that dude, just like a lot of the recruited players
32:15
So I really think, you know, Matt Ruhle was a huge selling point to him
32:19
And I just I don't I just I think this guy's a winner. And frankly, you know, as bad as, you know, we all kind of freaked out
32:26
about the Trev Alberts thing. Like, I think Nebraska is in a better spot right now with Troy Dan
32:31
and then they were with Trev Alberts. So, I mean, that could be right or wrong. We'll see how it works out
32:35
But I like where they're at right now. I agree. I do like where they're at right now
32:41
You know, I like that, you know, we have a solid system in place
32:47
that was put even before, you know, Danon was thought about or on the scene
32:52
And, you know, I feel like the group of coaches, Amy Williams, Matt Ruhle
32:59
Fred Hoiberg, you know, Will Bolt, you know, John Cook, there's solid foundations being built there to where the athletic director
33:09
doesn't really have to make any tough decisions early on. Alberts was obviously faced with Scott Frost
33:17
you know, and you know what to do, you know, with Scott Frost after 2021
33:23
And then, you know, giving him the axe in 2022. So, you know, barring anything catastrophic
33:32
there's a foundation in place to where Danon doesn't have to worry about, you know, kind of, you know, a big hire right away
33:38
And I think that's important, too, because it just shows, you know, stability within the athletic department
33:43
And that's something that we haven't had in quite some time. Yeah, and it's things are in a good spot right now
33:50
Hopefully he can keep it moving forward. So, yeah, I think that's all we have for today, folks
