welcome back to the Husker big red YouTube channel I'm Chris Peterson and joining me as always for uh this episode is Danny Gillette my co-host and we're
0:07
back to uh talk about some spring football story lines as the Huskers are going to be getting underway with that next week um also the college basketball
0:14
crown that official um selection is in for the Huskers and we'll tell you why you should care about that and why this
0:19
is a great opportunity for Nebraska basketball and we will also take an early look at some of the transfer portal targets to know for Nebraska
0:26
there's a a guy from Iowa who just hit the portal who would look great in the the scarlet and so we will touch on all
0:31
that before we do hit the like button hit the Subscribe button get into the comment section Danny how are you doing
0:36
on this Tuesday morning I'm doing good I'm doing good a lot of Nebraska news and uh I can't believe we're halfway
0:43
through March and usually you know there's an off season but uh as far as called sports are nowadays you have all
0:50
this transf portal news and all this offseason news so there really is no break anymore and uh it's quite
0:55
interesting to follow with some of the recent developments over the past couple days yeah there is no break in uh being
1:01
a college sports fan you know it's 365 days a year so gives me something to pass my time with something to entertain
1:07
myself with uh but yeah it's going to be a fun you know fun few weeks for Nebraska fans we've got also the women's
1:14
team selected to the NCA tournament they'll be getting underway on Friday they got a 10 seed um so that's going to
1:20
be exciting they we'll be playing Louisville on Thursday down in Fort Worth um so yeah Amy Williams Squad in
1:26
the tournament for a second straight season in the college basketball Crown I know I know a lot of Nebraska fans
1:31
aren't thrilled about it but um I'll get into that why I think it's exciting and frankly Nebraska hasn't won we talked
1:37
about this a postseason tournament since 1996 this is a great opportunity to end that streak and um you know it I just
1:44
want to see Bryce and these guys get 20 wins get a trophy and go out you know not on top but the best way that they
1:50
possibly can better than losing you know a game on their home floor the last time so yeah no I mean I'm kind of in the
1:57
latter group of Husker fans but I I definitely understand why sub would be excited as well I I do want to see these
2:04
guys one more time and um you know honestly I think it's a good opportunity when you talk about some of the guys
2:09
coming back for next season it's an opportunity to kind of have good momentum moving forward and continue to
2:15
develop because I think you know not to go for T you know down this rabbit hole but I think some of these guys on the
2:21
roster right now will have a chance to have major minutes and a Major Impact uh next fall yeah for sure um and we're
2:28
definitely going to talk about we'll get into the crown we'll talk about maybe some transfers who could be added to this roster but first um because I know
2:35
uh Nebraska fans are focused on football number one let's talk about Spring ball which is going to be starting next week
2:41
um and a lot of teams have already got underway this week some aren't starting till April Nebraska will hit the field next week of course no spring game but
2:48
that doesn't mean that uh that's really going to change as far as what this team is doing you know they're going to be doing their practices they're going to
2:53
be doing all the same work except that last scrimmage at the end of the season isn't or the end of the spring isn't going to happen but that's really more
2:59
for fans um The Players I mean everything's really what they're doing is going to be the same so um let's talk about some
3:05
storylines going into this spring um so Danny I mean it can be anything just kind of an open discussion but what are
3:11
some things that you're you know kind of monitoring or or what are you looking for this spring out of Nebraska football
3:16
just from a production standpoint I'm looking to see what the Freshman wide receivers can do I mean You' You' we've
3:21
talked about you know how Dynamic and explosive they can be Cortez Mills
3:27
Isaiah mosy I mean I'm not saying that they're going to come in and and immediately start but I'm very interested to see how they develop
3:34
throughout the course of the spring if they can make an impact on this offense and um well not if but how much right
3:41
now because we know they're going to make an impact on this offense and um they're gonna be able to be mentored by
3:48
you know a guy like Dane key who's a really really good veteran receiver if
3:54
you will I know veterans not really used in college football but you know I was watching some of his you know highlights over the past couple days and man he's a
4:01
really good player so I'm very curious to see how this wide receiver room shakes up because I do think you know
4:07
we're at the point where the recruits are good enough and the commits are good enough to where they could play on the
4:13
field right away and um that's not really a point that we've been at in recent memory but now I think that the
4:21
tide is starting to turn yeah one thing I'm going to be keeping an eye on um you know in
4:26
addition to the wide receivers that's definitely you know going to be something I want to see as well how do the how do how does Dylan Rola kind of
4:32
mesh with some of these new guys Dane key naiah Hunter Hardley Gilmore how does Dori Barney fit into that Isaiah
4:39
mosy Cortez Mills like you said even Quinn Clark you know Quinn Clark I think closed the season his freshman season
4:45
pretty strong um moved ahead of Malachi Coleman obviously on the depth chart which is part of the reason why Malachi ended up transferring I think um so
4:51
we'll see if he you know is able to work his way into that conversation too but you know if you including him I mean
4:57
that's seven pretty talented guys right there who can a lot of things and um you know not just they they've been
5:02
productive on the field but then you look at like the 40 times the athleticism all that stuff I mean Nebraska has that in Spades in their
5:09
receiver room so that's definitely something to monitor I'm looking at the offensive line that's a big thing for me
5:14
um how's that going to shake out you know are they sounds like they're going to have a pritchet at left tackle um so
5:20
what's that going to look like for the right tackle position I know that gun Gula is obviously probably going to be that guy would have been nice if he's
5:26
going to play right tackle if he could have got those reps in the spring another thing that I'm looking at also is that Center position you know can Sam
5:33
Sledge really make a push there because if he if he could I don't think I don't think anybody else is a serious
5:38
Contender there but I do think Sam Sledge is a is a contender to start at Center and if he can do that then I
5:43
think you could see Justin Evans staying at guard and that would kind of solidify the offensive line then I think you'd
5:49
see gatul and Pritchett at tackle uh Spindler and Evans at guard and Sam Sledge at Center so there's a
5:55
possibility that that could be your starting five going into next season which I would be fine with and Evans is a really good guard too so that would be
6:02
kind of the ideal spot for him right I mean I I've always really liked him I think he's a good offensive lineman and
6:07
then um another thing I'm watching is you know kind of where Andrew um Andrew
6:13
Marshall fits into the return game you know we talked about Mike Eckler and his you know special teams units have been
6:19
very good in terms of the return game and um we we've also talked about Marshall's kind of dual ability to be a
6:26
very good corner but also can he be a good kick returner and I think one of the things you want to kind of um you
6:33
know kind of practice good habits with is returning the football on kickoffs and punt returns so how they kind of
6:40
incorporate not just Andrew Marshall but the overall kick return game is something I'm going to watch because
6:45
that desperately needs to be a focus uh in my opinion moving forward yeah and
6:50
I've said this before but I do think Andrew Marshall is one of the most underrated transfer portal editions for
6:55
Nebraska I think he's going to play cornerback a lot better than people realize and make it impact uh you know in the return game so I'm just excited
7:02
for for Mike Eckler and to have some competence um you know on the special team so that'll be you know I know we're
7:08
probably not going to hear a ton about that we're not obviously going to get to see you know the Special Teams you know doing much with I wouldn't imagine they
7:14
would do a ton in the seven on seven stuff maybe they could I don't know maybe they could maybe they could punt or I I have no idea but um but they're
7:20
still going to be putting that work in and so I'll be interesting to see what the buzz is like coming out of the Special Teams and I'm also going to be
7:27
uh very paying close attention to the buzzer around the running back position and not necessarily you know EMT Johnson
7:32
I feel very very confident in what he can do but you know what what are some of these other guys going to do can um
7:37
you know can could IES you know step in and be that solid number two back he's been fine for me on NCA football in my
7:43
2025 season I've played really well with him but can he do the same thing in real life you know for the Huskers can um you
7:49
know I don't know off the top of my head if jaryan Parker has enrolled early so you know that would be another thing to
7:55
watch um we could double check that but um there's some other young backs that kind of need to emerge this spring if
8:01
Nebraska's going to you know ignore the transfer portal in terms of having a backup for EMT Johnson Micky Nelson is
8:07
the guy that comes to mind for me uh I don't know about you but um I I've heard good things about him throughout the
8:14
course of you know the months and overall just the chat around him has been positive so he's a guy that needs
8:20
to kind of emerge as a Dependable back I think in the spring I'm not sure what
8:26
your feelings are on that I mean they need somebody to come in and do it whether it's
8:32
um whether it uh is uh you know Quint IES or Nelson um I've been checking this
8:38
out and uh jaryan Parker had did enroll early so he's another guy that will be taking part in the spring so I mean he
8:45
is another person to mention in that I really do believe that um out of St Louis I mean he was a four-star running
8:50
back I think he is going to be one of the better commitments I said in the past you know he does remind me his running style reminds me of am man green
8:56
a little bit so I'm not saying that he's goingon to be that but um I'm going to be paying close
9:02
attention to see if we start hearing his name because it would not surprise me you know if he got into the mix early next season I mean we saw AJ Allen when
9:08
he was a freshman you know looked pretty good um just had some injury issues but if this guy could get out there then
9:14
maybe you know with Parker and Ives and Nelson maybe they feel good enough to not need to seek a portal in the Run uh
9:21
a running back in the spring transfer window do you know if Conor Booth is going is has um enrolled early as well
9:27
not according to the list I've seen so um but yeah he's another he's definitely another guy that will be in the mix
9:33
he'll just have a little harder it's a little more difficult when you arrive in the fall in this I guess you come in the
9:39
summer obviously so they could for summer workouts and stuff but just you're a little behind schedule but yeah so so jaryan Parker probably has a leg
9:46
up on Connor booth there um the other guys who are enrolling early who will take um part in Spring ball are mosy TJ
9:53
Latif Malcolm Simpson um Pierce mberry Brian tapoo Tyson Terry Kaden Moss
9:59
Dawson Meritt Cortez Mills Christian Jones Cade patriach the only thing I'm not sure about that
10:08
um is that I did see you know Malcolm Simpson got like a award for a basketball award so I'm not sure if he
10:14
is taking his SP part in Spring basketball so I mean Spring football so I have to double check on that one but
10:20
um but overall and and actually was interesting because he was like named like one of the top defensive players in
10:26
his conference which I think is a pretty notable thing for you know a defensive lineman who's as big as that so I mean I
10:32
thought I took that as a really good thing but um especially in Texas yeah so
10:37
I'm interested in that and then the defensive line is something that I want to you know hear about you know like how
10:43
is Kiana Davis doing Riley Ben pole um you know Williams nor are those guys
10:48
could those three right there you know be your starting defensive front next season um very possible I think um
10:54
Elijah Judy also in the mix there but those three guys especially I think need
10:59
to to really take big steps Cameron Leonards in that group too but if those five defensive linemen can be just
11:05
really solid for Nebraska they might not even need anything in the transfer portal I mean I'm sure they'd love another 300 pound dude you know like a
11:11
Nash Hut maker or whatever but um if Davis van Popple noer um Leonard and
11:17
Judy if they can all kind of take a step forward from last season I think this defensive line could be pretty special
11:23
and it'll give Tyson Terry time to develop not that he was necessarily going to play a ton this year anyway but
11:28
coming off a surgery you know I think it's important to just let him rest as much as possible and also you know just
11:34
from a football standpoint have productive depth so you don't feel like you're you need to rush him into any
11:40
sort of game action anytime soon because we've seen that happen before and it hasn't been pretty
11:45
necessarily yeah and they've got you know Jaylen George who's going to be missing the spring but he'll be back for fall Camp Tyson is supposed to be ready
11:52
for fall Camp so I mean we'll see how that like you said I I I think this will be more of a red shirt GE for him anyway
11:58
I mean he got to he's got to get his weight up and um I'm sure he will I don't think he's going to have a problem
12:04
with that but it might be a little more of a struggle since he's like you know I don't know how much he's going to be able to work out and do all that stuff
12:10
you know while he's going through his rehab so I mean I'm sure he'll be I have no doubt he's going to be like a stud in the future but oh yeah probably going to
12:16
be a red shirt year for him which is is not a bad thing for a defensive lineman um no I mean because I remember we were
12:22
both kind of mystified last season at the red shirt year for Van Popple and now it looks like he's gotten a little
12:28
bit bigger and now he's going to take on a um kind of bigger role so you know I
12:34
think as much as it was frustrating at times last season I think the red like the red shirt year as far as van Popple
12:40
was concerned was probably a smart thing in the long term and I feel like it's going to be the same way for Terry too
12:47
yeah I mean it ended up working out okay my only thing with Van Poppel is like I think if he would have played I think he would have been a better player this
12:53
year so I mean you know and I think it could have helped the team last year too I think they would have been a better so I mean it's but regardless I don't want
12:59
to go back down that road but it it's going to be nice to have him for you know have the extra year of eligibility
13:05
now and he did play well um in that bowl game I mean that was nice to see and then he got to play I think the Iowa
13:10
game because I think he'd only played three games but at any rate and then after your after the four after the
13:16
regular season the blll games don't count so he was able to play in that postseason game and I thought he made a
13:21
solid impact and the dude looks absolutely monstrous so I mean you saw him next to Tyson Terry and he
13:26
definitely looks like he's about 320 pounds so I feel like you know even
13:32
though there may not be like a nose tackle on this team I think Riley Van Poppel is essentially going to be that
13:37
guy Elijah Judy too and like I said before it wouldn't surprise me if we saw more fourman defensive fronts I mean I
13:44
just feel like this team has the roster for it to you know to play more of that 425 not necessarily 43 but um you know
13:51
just in that nickel set four defensive line and more up front I think we'll see that this year I mean heck V Papa played
13:56
well as a freshman I remember that goal line stop against Illinois to Halt that long drive and there were
14:02
flashes that he was going to be really really good early but um you know one of the one of the other things I'm kind of
14:07
watching for this spring is the tight end position because you know Thomas vidon is is no longer in the picture
14:14
obviously and you have you know Luke Linden Meer you know Carter Nelson and
14:20
then you have a bunch of other guys too maybe ailen Smith you know I believe Ian Flint still on the roster so I'm curious
14:27
to see kind of the um Darkhorse at the tight end position because I think
14:33
somebody's really going to have to step up this year you know maybe a person who didn't necessarily produce a lot last
14:39
year but again being able to kind of you know um uh kind of you know get that
14:47
bigger role in the offense going and this is a good place to start yeah I think Hinrich harberg is going to have
14:53
to be the guy there you know and we've saw um you know some talk with uh you
14:58
know Tim Tim ver fges is that the guy from Rivals um I'm not sure how to
15:04
pronoun his last name to be honest with yeah anyway Tim from RS but he uh you know he had put some stuff out kind of
15:10
you know just opining this was his opinion that Carter Nelson's not going to play this season that's that's just his opinion but you know I mean it is
15:17
pretty notable he's a you know I would say a pro a program Insider I mean he has got quite a bit of inside knowledge
15:22
so I mean that's his opinion though based on Carter Nelson's injury and everything um but regardless I think
15:27
that hin is going to have to play a big role I think he's going to be the starting tight end this year him and Lynden Meyer um and then whatever you
15:34
know comes out of Carter Nelson happens but Carter Nelson to me is more of a move tight end anyways more of a you
15:40
know he can block but I think inline blocking this year like I really think HRI harber can do can be successful with
15:46
that I mean I've seen the way he runs the football and I I really do think that he can be a physical blocker um I
15:52
think he's shown that he can catch passes he's caught a couple in his career um he's decent after the catch
15:57
and I think the other thing too is the fact that this will be the first time he's ever got to truly practice and play
16:03
as a tight end so I'm really excited about that I think he's going to attack it you know with an enthusiasm unknown
16:08
to mankind as I make my Jim Harbaugh reference but that's who that's who Heinrich is I mean that's just that's just the guy that he is like he is going
16:15
to you know go after this tight end position with everything he has and uh like I mean he could have transferred he
16:20
could have left this program but he is one of those guys that loves Nebraska and I'm really excited to see what he
16:25
can do at tight end this year so I know that that is kind of the question mark but I'm actually not that worried about
16:30
it because I feel like hinrich's going to be pretty solid there and I feel like this would be an opportunity for Luke lyen meire to really assert himself in
16:37
the tight end room as well because he he showed flashes once hogerson kind of got that room stabilized last year right and
16:44
um I I I think him and harre have a chance to you know really be productive
16:50
players in the room it's just going to be a question of you know who can kind of solidify their spot early and the
16:57
continued develop at the position yeah I I think I don't think there'll be like a huge ramp up in production from last
17:04
season but maybe not a huge drop off I think most of the passes are getting thrown to the wide receivers so I mean that's just yeah but but I do think
17:10
they'll you know I think Hinrich can catch 20 30 passes I think Luke can catch you know 10 to 20 passes kind of
17:16
like what they had you know last year um between BM or not bokm um Bacher and uh
17:21
fedon fedon so I think that I don't think the drop off will be that much and I think the blocking which is maybe even
17:28
more important for Nebraska I think is going to be maybe even better because uh you know those guys were good but I
17:34
think I think Hinrich can be a really good blocking tight end I really believe that so um we'll see how that works out
17:40
let's shift our conversation here we'll have a lot more to talk about Spring ball coming up but let's shift to uh the
17:45
college basketball crown and why Nebraska fans should care about the college basketball Crown um I know there
17:51
it's the selection process is kind of interesting I've had some people message me like Why didn't Nebraska you know
17:56
play in the NIT as opposed to the crown and like if you look at the NIT field it is not great and there's only four like
18:03
power five programs Maj High major programs in it so it's really become more of a mid- major tournament um and a
18:09
lot of teams turn down bids to the crown and to uh you know the NIT like Ohio State Indiana Northwestern so that did
18:16
hurt the field a little bit there's some teams with losing records in the crown like the first team Nebraska will play which is Arizona State they're
18:23
not yeah they only won four they only won four conference games um but you
18:28
look at Georgetown was seventh in the Big East Washington State won 19 games so those are those would be the two
18:34
teams that Nebraska could play if they win that matchup but you look at the field overall and if you look at the kenpom metrics the kenpom rankings
18:42
Nebraska is the second highest rated team in this tournament um Boise state is ranked ranked above them in the
18:47
kenpom ring rankings but uh they're second and I feel like this is a golden opportunity for Nebraska to you know to
18:54
win a postseason tournament and um they've got 17 wins it would be great to get uh to get to 20 um and to get to
19:01
this championship game and to win it um so I don't know I feel like the crown
19:07
has a chance to really supplant the NIT as a tournament where you can at least see Power five teams it would it would
19:13
be funner if Ohio State North Western were here you know I feel like that would make it a little more interesting but um I'm excited to see Bryce Williams
19:19
and dwan Gary play again and that's that's my main motivation really I just I just don't want us I just did not want
19:25
that last game to be their final game in a Husker uniform that's that's definitely understandable and I
19:31
definitely would want to see them play you know a couple more times or one more time whatever it may be I mean
19:39
but I'm with a lot of Husker fans and it's it's hard for me to get excited about this tournament I'll watch for
19:44
sure I'm not I'm not gonna be sitting here saying oh I won't watch because I'll definitely watch but it is hard it
19:50
is a little bit hard for me to get excited uh especially when you look
19:56
at the not well not just the m opportunities but the amount of work
20:01
that this team is going to need to put in um in just a couple weeks honestly
20:06
so I am excited to see this group play one last time and I do think it will be a chance for you know guys like Conor
20:13
Sean you know burky Boya cunel you know guys like that to really set the tone
20:19
for next season but uh we'll see what we'll see what happens in this tournament and um it it will give me a
20:25
chance and us a chance to see Joan Gary and you said ryce Williams won last time
20:30
so I have mixed feelings uh but um overall I think this tournament
20:35
shouldn't be too bad yeah and I think it'll be um I think that the way that they have it formatted um you know and
20:42
that they're they're playing it in Las Vegas and Like there so March 31st you're going to have eight basketball games on that Monday or Tuesday whatever
20:50
that is um so you're gonna have eight basketball games to watch which I think will be I mean some of the matchups I get that there's there's four teams in
20:56
this tournament that have losing records so I mean like you know it is what it is but um you've also got a few teams that
21:02
got 20 wins um in our side of the bracket you've got Utah and Butler George Washington and Boise State so I
21:09
mean you could if Nebraska is able to get past its part you're probably looking at either Boise State Utah or
21:16
Butler to get to the championship and then you know T Lane um Oregon State we saw them earlier Cincinnati there are
21:23
some of the better teams villain Nova USC are on the other side of the bracket um so you know I I think it's a I like I
21:30
like the idea of this tournament and I think it's going to you know be a good thing moving forward um maybe it could
21:37
be played a little bit earlier would make it easier like in terms of the transfer portal stuff but I mean it is what it is and I just think well I I
21:43
always look just just to a bowl game you know like a football bowl game at this point yeah in terms of transfer portal
21:49
window yeah so you need seven guys which I think Nebraska will be able to field a team you know without much problem and
21:55
then um yeah so I mean I I like it I think it's you know I I think it would be good if
22:02
you know this became like a mid more of a you know High major tournament the NIT can become a mid- major tournament and
22:08
uh maybe we can get rid of some of these other ones because you still got you know the CBI and the CIT there's like a lot of colleges there's like five
22:15
postseason tournaments that you know don't get a ton of Pub but um still and
22:20
I guess overall this is just the second uh postseason birth under Fred hyberg and which is is a little different
22:26
because maybe one thing I don't love about the crown is that you can make it without being 500 but I think that part
22:32
of that just a reaction to some of these you know power conferences where it's like some years you could be you know
22:37
like USC I mean USC is not a bad team they just they play in a really difficult conference and I feel like
22:42
that's part of the reason why they have a losing record so I don't know I don't really hate it but I mean I don't love the idea of like a five and seven team
22:48
making a bowl game but I mean it is what it is the fact that an inv that the the
22:54
fact that a you know one of I don't know five you know postseason basketball tournament
23:01
that's not the NIT or the NCA tournament is a second postseason breth under Fred hyberg is part of a bigger issue but um
23:08
you know that that's that it is what it is um you know I feel like I feel like
23:15
and I guess we could kind of shift into this now um Nebraska is going to have to Pony up the money if they want to feel a
23:22
competitive team next year yeah absolutely the transfer portal is going to be huge for the Huskers um
23:28
it always is I mean they're just a transfer portal team they they have made some um more they're trying to do some
23:34
more with recruits but um it it just is what it is they're not going to have the money really to do
23:40
that but um one name FR doesn't like to do it honestly let's be real here Fred doesn't like to recruit and he's he's
23:45
been very clear on that from day one yeah I mean it's just I think it's just hard where where they're at um yeah
23:52
but that's fair I mean I don't know and with the I mean it's the same thing with
23:57
uh you know if you want to recruit um you know top 50 players like you need money you need a lot of money and you
24:04
need to and Nebraska's not really a place that's known for doing that so
24:09
like and developing players so I mean they did get um Janowski which I thought was a good pickup um we'll see how it
24:15
goes I I do think it's a delicate balance you have to kind of thread between the portal and uh High School
24:21
recruiting but one name I think that's going to be interesting that Nebraska should be in on is price sandfort from
24:26
Iowa just entered the portal um 67 the dude can shoot we know that we
24:32
we know what his brother can do but he made he averaged 1.7 three-point field goals per game last year and shot 40%
24:38
from three um you know doesn't rebound the ball that well but Nebraska could really use I mean a floor spacer like
24:45
that to me he seems like a guy who could plug and play for you know Bryce Williams or Jan G not not a similar type
24:51
of player but you know a guy who could really upgrade the three-point shooting and uh you know getting a big 10 starter
24:56
I think would be a great idea and then Nebraska was very involved in his his recruitment I mean he was a priority for
25:02
the Huskers as a high school recruit so there's a relationship there and you know I it makes a lot of sense to me I
25:07
don't know if he is going to be interested in Nebraska but that's one one player that I would Target if I was
25:12
Fred hyberg yeah I would definitely because when you look at the Fred hyberg offense a lot of it relies on the
25:17
three-point shooting and a lot of it relies on on spacing in terms of the floor and I think in the Big 10 now you
25:24
almost need like two or three good three-point Shooters on the roster and Sanford would definitely be one of them
25:30
then you would have Sanford you know aan that's two because I believe that aan could be a very consistent um and and
25:37
good three-point shooter and then so if you got Sanford you got a Sean I feel like that could help take care of the
25:44
three-point production um you know for next season yeah it definitely would help and
25:51
then um another guy that maybe would be on the radar I don't know it was Connor
25:56
aan reposted it and basically was like you know kind of recruiting um but Jaylen Jackson from uh Purdue Fort Wayne
26:03
the Macedon 62 Junior average 19 points per game this season um 3.1 assists um
26:10
4.4 rebounds not a great three-point shooter but you know kind of a scoring point guard a facilitator um and that's
26:17
that's something Nebraska desperately needs they need a and they need somebody who can take that you know some of the
26:23
volume of Bryce Williams I mean Bryce Williams was a huge you was his usage was really high and so they're going to
26:29
need a high usage player to kind of fill that role and this guy um you know can
26:35
could definitely be that next season for Nebraska so his team was very close to making the NCA tournament they got to
26:40
their league tournament championship and lost um so he's already entered the portal averaged over 15 points a game
26:46
last season as well or two years ago I should say um so Jaylen Jackson might be a guy in the transfer portal 49% last
26:53
season from the field 48% um two years ago and actually two years ago ago he shot 41% from three so last year he shot
27:01
a higher volume the percentage wasn't as good but this would be a guy that I mean Nebraska could really use an impact
27:06
guard and they didn't really have one on this team um they had Williams I guess you could say that Bryce Williams was kind of a guard I'd consider him more of
27:12
a wing but um it would be great to have a dynamic scoring guy in the back court who can handle the ball and just do all
27:18
that stuff yeah absolutely because they haven't really had like a good like point guard in quite some time I mean it
27:24
seems like we've been searching for a point guard you know for quite a while and um you know when you look at the
27:32
transfer portal and when you look at what this team needs you know volume scores are something that they're going to need desperately and I feel like you
27:40
know if you have you know Sanford and then and then Jackson and the other you
27:46
know player Jackson you know I think um I think you have two players that can
27:51
you know help offset the loss of Williams and Gary because I think this
27:57
year they struggled to find a Casey tominaga placement and I'm not saying that's easy but his but the impact of
28:04
him not being on the roster was definitely felt I I I thought in certain games of season and so if they're able
28:11
to get two players that can kind of slide in and take the impact scoring role of Gary and Williams then I think
28:17
that's a step in the right direction yeah and um it's that's an interesting point I mean Fred hyberg did
28:23
talk about that um you know how they he didn't talk about the loss of Kay so so
28:28
much um in more of the sense he talked about their three three-point field goals and this year they made 225 and I
28:35
think it was like a much lower number than they made the previous year and the reason for that I think it it goes
28:40
beyond um excuse me it goes beyond K to managa because I mean Kay excuse me
28:47
sorry Kay made 76 three-pointers last season okay so um this season Conor seen made 70 so like really they did they did
28:55
have a I mean they now Connor's not the the score that Kay is okay in terms of all around and doing all the different
29:01
because Kay is an incredible cutter he can create he can do a lot of there's a reason that that guy is still playing in the G league right now and is getting
29:08
closer to playing in the NBA because he can do a bunch of things but you know he made 76 they made 319 last year as a
29:14
team so they made almost 100 fewer three-pointers now a big reason why for that g rank Mast made 42 last year CJ
29:21
Wilshire made 50 last year Jamarcus Lawrence made 36 those are the guys they did not replace so you know terms of um
29:29
you know the three-point shooting and a reason why this offense wasn't as good because they had no replacement for CJ Wilshire they didn't have a they didn't
29:36
have anybody I mean you could say that Conor asan could have been that replacement but then yeah then you don't
29:42
have a replacement for Kay I guess so I mean but if you look at three really good Shooters they had last year in
29:47
tominaga and Wilshire and Lawrence and they just they didn't replace they didn't replace the production of
29:53
Lawrence and wilter in my opinion um and and that needed to be like G a Griffith needed to be a guy who stepped up and
30:00
made some threes um and it just didn't happen Andrew Morgan was the guy who was supposed to make threes and he just
30:05
didn't you know he was not I mean he was sort of build as a guy who could be similar to rank mass and that was not at
30:11
all what he could be because I mean he just didn't shoot threes this year maybe um you know I guess looking back
30:19
at his career I'd have to look maybe maybe I'm just mistaken but you know he only made four threes so you look at rink Mass made 40 and he only made four
30:26
and you look at um you know the other I mean braxon may obviously made zero so you know like a
30:32
huge part of that is getting rink Mass back is a huge addition right there because you're getting you know 43
30:38
pointers or whatever from you know berky made 22 but he shot 28% so it's like
30:44
yeah it just wasn't good and and so I think prioritizing shooting is going to
30:49
be something that you'll see very much from Fred hyber and staff moving forward because they have to they have to
30:55
replace those numbers they have to make over 300 thre pointers season or this team's just not going to be very good I mean that's just the bottom line that's
31:00
how they have to play and when you look at you mentioned Jamarcus Lawrence I mean he had a pretty good year for Rhode
31:07
Island this year he averaged 9.9 points but he had know games where he had you know 20 he had at least 10 points in
31:15
several games he had 18 there there was a stretch where he went you know 189
31:22
19102 you know multiple games of you know over 10 points in back-to-back
31:27
contest so I do think losing Lawrence um you know in the way he was able to not
31:34
only shoot but drive to the basket I think hurt Nebraska a little bit because you know we had Bryce Williams obviously
31:41
but I felt like at times this year there weren't enough players on the roster that could drive to the rim and create
31:47
contact and get to the line at times and so I think Lawrence provided that as well and I feel like I feel like we were
31:54
missing that uh this this season yeah they definitely um you know they they
32:00
did miss him and um you know this this transfer portal glass wasn't as good as the year before so hopefully this one
32:06
will be better and um you know once that portal opens up there'll be a lot of stuff coming down that's going to be
32:11
coming really soon so we'll have a lot more on that we'll have more Nebraska football spring storylines and we'll
32:17
