Hey Husker fans, welcome back to the Husker Big Red YouTube channel. I'm Chris Peterson and joining me is my co-host Danny Gillette of HuskerBigRed.com and we're back to talk some Nebraska football and there's been a lot of recruiting news, a lot of legacy commitments. Danny, how are you doing on this Monday morning
0:18
I'm doing great. My fingers hurt a little bit because all the typing I've had to do over the weekend with news
0:23
But you know what? I'd rather I'd rather be, you know, fingers hurting from news than than tumbleweeds from
0:29
no news. So, you know, it's it comes with the territory and it's nice to actually get some positive
0:34
momentum into this program for once, which is what Matt Rule has been doing ever since
0:38
he got here. So I can't complain today. Yeah, it was, you know, Friday we recorded on Friday morning
0:44
Then we had Tyson Terry commit Friday evening. um there wasn't you know a lot of official visitors this weekend but coach rule and the
0:52
huskers you know hosted some camps some had some key guys on campus which was interesting some new
0:57
offers so kind of a lot to talk about um but to start i wanted to touch on uh camden uh coke um
1:04
the you know nebraska legacy uh commitment um you know and it's a big get you know sam coke was one
1:10
of the best punters in the nfl and i know a lot of nebraska fans will remember when he was at
1:14
Nebraska, you know, he was an all American, you know, a gray guy, finalist or semi-finalist or
1:19
whatever was one of the best punters we've ever had. I think his average, you know, at the time
1:23
his senior year was one of the, maybe set the NCAA record. It's probably, I'm not sure, but something along those lines, it was kind of a record breaking season for him. So I'm really
1:31
excited about getting his son Camden, you know, punter, he's going to be on scholarship from the
1:36
reports that I've seen, which makes sense. You know, Brian Buscini's out of eligibility after
1:41
this year and we saw in 2021 if you don't have a good punter uh you know you can a la michigan
1:47
state you can lose a football game or two so i feel good about you know getting a scholarship
1:52
punter that i think is going to do a pretty good job here for the next four years after
1:56
buscini leaves beyond the season how dare you mention that michigan state game i had just
2:01
erased that from my mind but no speaking of 2021 that was the year that uh sam coke retired so
2:08
he played from 2006 to 2021 with the Ravens a really nice long and productive NFL career and
2:16
you know if his son is anything like his father I think we'll be in very good shape I mean
2:21
and just on a side note all these legacy and sons committing McGaigey, Coke I mean it makes you feel
2:28
old I don't know makes me feel really old but I'm happy to have Sam in the program because you know
2:34
I think you can never have too many special teams guys. I mean, I know he had six kickers at one point and it was like, okay
2:41
we have six kickers, but you know, our, our field goal unit struggled for, you know, a couple of seasons
2:47
So I'm happy to have Sam in here and hopefully those really good punter
2:51
genes got passed down. Camden. You said Sam a couple times. Yeah. But anyways, you know, I'm sure that, you know
2:59
Sam will in a way be a part of Nebraska football because I'm sure he'll be kind of coaching up his son on how to, you know, perfect his punting technique and whatnot. But
3:06
yeah, I mean, a guy that actually got drafted as a punter by the Ravens in the sixth round
3:11
and that turned out to be a pretty good pick. And, you know, a good punter can be a really
3:15
good weapon. And we've seen in Nebraska, you know, having strong kicking, you know, Alex Henry was a
3:20
real weapon when he was here at Nebraska. And he, I believe he handled punting and kicking duties
3:24
for a time. I could be wrong. That was about, like you said, that was about 18, you know, 16
3:29
15 years ago so um but i do think that it's a good move um you know it's not that you want to
3:35
have a ton of special teams guys on scholarship but you need a good you need a good kicker you
3:39
need a good punter you need a long snap i mean those are just positions that you need and i feel
3:43
like the huskers got a good one here and if you're going to get a kid a scholarship this is somebody
3:48
that it makes sense in my opinion to get one to and quite honestly we've also seen the reverse
3:53
effect of what happens when you do not have a good special team so yeah i would rather have you know
3:58
a lot of, you know, special teams guys to add at least depth and competition to the special teams
4:05
room than to, you know, not have enough and have to really kind of, you know, just try to tread
4:12
water. So I'm really happy about this. And special teams are often overlooked, but they are
4:17
oftentimes the most crucial part of a game. Especially when you're playing, you know
4:23
really tight football games. And we've seen Nebraska lose a bunch of close games over the
4:28
last few years and special teams has played a role in that not as not so much last year but it i mean
4:33
it did a little bit i mean tommy bleak road missed you know and obviously you know um you know coke's
4:38
not a kicker but i mean bleak road missed you know the a field goal before half against northwestern
4:43
that proved pretty costly and then he also missed the game time kick against georgia southern but
4:47
i believe that was him maybe it was the other guy but at any rate nebraska has missed a lot of you
4:52
know important kicks and had some punts that weren't necessarily that great either and a punter
4:56
can be you know the best friend of your defense i mean if you can you know if you're punting from
5:01
your own 20 yard line and you can pin them back down to their 20 and flip kind of flip the field
5:05
so to speak that that can make a big difference and uh sam cope definitely was able to do that
5:10
you know with the huskers and with the ravens and hopefully his son will be able to do the same thing for nebraska and it'll also be interesting to see you know what type of punter he is does he
5:19
rely on the role or can he get you know a ton of hang time in the air because that makes a difference
5:23
too and so I'll be interested to see what Camden can do in that regard as well but you know it's
5:29
really exciting to have another legacy in the program and it's kind of cool to see this coaching
5:35
staff go after so many legacy players obviously results will tell on the field how good they
5:41
really are but at the very least they know the history of the program and you know they're
5:48
willing to help the next generation of players kind of get their feet wet in Lincoln
5:53
And, yeah, speaking of some other legacy, the Huskers actually got two legacy commitments because even though Marquez Buford's still on the team, he is a current Husker and his younger brother also committed
6:08
That was last Thursday. That was Mario Buford. And then Friday we got the big news on Tyson Terry
6:13
It seemed like a commitment was coming. There was a lot of crystal ball movement from Thursday kind of in the afternoon and Friday morning
6:20
Steve Wolfong jumped on board so he could get his prediction in
6:23
And then it popped that Friday. I mean, it felt like it was coming. Terrence Knight and those guys tweeted, you know, the, you know
6:30
they kind of had their tweet emojis that they put out when it's a commitment time
6:34
And that was a big one. I mean, his dad played at Nebraska. And I just love this kid, 6'2", 275
6:41
He's, you know, ranked 403rd overall. I think he's like third or fourth in the state of Nebraska
6:45
But one of the top prospects in 2025. He's a dominant wrestler, too, which I really love
6:52
I mean, he's 96-0 as a heavyweight wrestler. He has a chance to become the first four-time champion in the heavyweight class in Nebraska
7:00
because it's hard to do. It's hard to be a freshman heavyweight. And that's one thing I think really wrestlers do tend to make good defensive linemen
7:08
They're really strong upper body because, I mean, if you aren't strong and if you aren't waiting to win that hand fighting as a heavyweight wrestler
7:15
you're just going to get dominated. and so I feel really good about Tyson Terry and even though he's a three-star right now I definitely
7:22
think he's got he's going to be a four-star recruit by the time he signs and it gives Nebraska a chance
7:28
to actually develop a defensive lineman and not just rely on the transfer portal I think that's
7:33
important too and you can see a little bit of his wrestling background in his game he's very agile
7:39
very quick he doesn't give up on a play he constantly pursues plays in the backfield and
7:45
And those type of rushers and players that never give up on a play
7:51
those are the type of defensive linemen you need in a 3-3-5
7:56
When you talk about, I know there's different variations, but when you talk about just a straight 3-3-5
8:02
a lot of it relies on corner play, but also you need good defensive linemen to help ease the load off the corners
8:09
I think Terry will be able to help out in a big way once he gets on campus
8:15
Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see what, you know, he can kind of develop into because I think there's a chance he could be, you know, a 3-5 technique type player that can play both of those roles or he could be a nose tackle eventually
8:27
Just, you know, he is a little bit. That's one thing about wrestling, you know, is he's got to keep his weight, you know, a bit under control, you know, with the heavyweight division and whatnot
8:35
So, I mean, I definitely expect him to be, you know, a 300-pound guy when he actually gets to Nebraska
8:40
He looks like he got the frame to definitely add some weight in a good way not just by eating or whatever So I really like what the Huskers are getting from him He got nine sacks already in his high school career
8:54
I mean, he's only played, I mean, he's just a sophomore. I mean, he only played through a sophomore season, 23 tackles for loss, over 100 total tackles
9:02
So that kind of, you know, reflects what you're talking about with the effort
9:06
You know, not all of those are solo tackles, but I mean, those are chasing guys down. And so he's just a very active player
9:11
Like you said, he's going to be a good guy to develop. And I just think it's a really good piece to have in the 2025 class
9:17
I mean, this, this guy we've, we've talked about him before and he was one of the top
9:21
recruits in this class. So I just feel like getting him, um, he's just a really good step for Matt rule to build
9:27
some instant momentum, especially because a couple of things in 2024 kind of trending
9:31
in the wrong direction, you know, Carter Nelson and, um, you know, Dave on hall, basically
9:35
those guys aren't, doesn't look like they're going to be coming here. So we'll get to those guys a little bit
9:39
We'll continue on with the good news first. But, no, it's good to see, you know, this coaching staff continue to try to close the deal with recruits from the previous staff, too
9:49
I mean, there were a lot of good players. Say, oh, you want about the previous staff? But there were a lot of, you know, good prospects that the previous staff was pursuing
9:57
And, you know, with only two commitments, and I know it's way too early, but the 2025 Nebraska football recruiting class ranks 10th overall
10:05
So, I mean, again, it's really early. I get it. But, I mean, it's exciting to see, you know, Caden, Verma, Stice, and Terry
10:13
I mean, you're getting defensive players that can really make an impact
10:18
and I'm excited to see how they develop and how they continue to grow
10:22
And I feel like Terry is going to be an absolutely massive, massive addition
10:26
that we'll be talking about for years to come, honestly. Definitely. I feel like he's going to be a really good player
10:34
and he's already on the border of being a four-star recruit. So, yeah, it's a really nice get
10:41
And like I said on Friday's show, Terrence Knighton's done a really good job. You know, Tony White was important in this recruitment, too
10:46
so we should give him some credit for really, you know, pushing. He's not maybe as active about it on social media
10:51
but he's doing a nice job kind of on it. And Mario Buford's commitment, too. So he's had a couple of busy days, good days for Tony White
10:59
Yeah, and Mario Buford, yeah, another, you know, we talked about his commitment on Friday
11:03
But, you know, another really good get in the 2024 class, kid out of Texas. Four of Nebraska's eight commits are out of Texas. I know they've got 11 official
11:12
visitors from the state of Texas, you know, coming throughout this cycle. So nothing that we didn't
11:17
expect with Matt Rule, but it's good to see him kind of following through on that. And I guess
11:23
speaking of some visitors, there were a bunch of kind of, like we said, not a bunch of official
11:27
visitors, but there were some key unofficial visitors and some guys camping. I know you wrote
11:33
a few um you know articles on huskerbigred.com but who were some guys that took visits that
11:39
you were kind of watching this weekend uh derrick brown jr i i know the coaching staff was working
11:44
with him a lot on saturday uh i from several reports i read they were working closely with
11:51
him he's a linebacker um he's not ranked in the composite or the 24 7 sports rankings right now
11:58
But, I mean, I think that's going to change pretty soon. It's very telling that they were working closely with him
12:05
And, you know, he got an offer on Saturday as well. So, you know, it's good to see them kind of continue to offer linebackers
12:14
and not only hold camps, but also really take stock in what these kids bring to the table, be active in those camps
12:23
and, you know, make a move to at least try to, you know
12:26
get a bug in the kid's ear before his recruitment really begins to take off
12:33
Yeah, it's definitely been a different, you know, Matt rules taking a different approach to the camps. You know
12:37
he's hosting a lot and he's been very active. We saw them go down to the satellite camp in Texas and they offered a few kids
12:44
in the 2024 class. You know, they offered a few, they offered a few kids this weekend. You know, Jake Peters
12:50
an offensive lineman from Iowa. It was his first power five offer
12:54
6'3", 265 interior offensive lineman. So he got offered yesterday. Stone Saunders was, you know
13:02
on campus throwing the 2026 QB from Bellevue and Daniel Kalin's backup. I'm
13:08
blanking on his name right now, but he was there. You know, Isaiah McMorris was there
13:13
which I thought was kind of a big deal. You mentioned it last week, but he wanted to get
13:18
coached up and work with Garrett McGuire. And I thought that that process seemed to go really well
13:23
from the reports that I read. And I just think that you don't usually see, you know
13:27
a guy like Isaiah McMorris in that class go to a camp like this, you know
13:32
So I thought that that was a good sign for Nebraska, just that he wanted to kind of get some time in with Garrett McGuire
13:38
And it seems like, you know, I'm not sure if you've read this
13:42
but basically it seems at this point that the Huskers aren't really going to be recruiting Davon Hall anymore
13:47
I did hear that. Yeah, I did hear that. I always thought it was a case of Hall or McMorris, one or the other
13:53
And, you know, it shows to me that they want McMorris and are still aggressively trying to pursue him
14:01
And credit to Garrett McGuire, I think, for his efforts recruiting. But as much as I like tall, I would like McMorris as well
14:09
So, you know, we can only land so many. And when we're going up against Oklahoma and, you know
14:16
those type of programs with consistent winning, you know, we're going to lose out some recruiting battles
14:21
I mean, you just kind of mentioned Carter Nelson. I mean, you know, he got crystal ball to Georgia on Friday
14:31
And I was just looking at their tight end room and their tight end room is absolutely ridiculous
14:35
Jaden Riddell, combination of Jaden Riddell and Carter Nelson, that would be insane
14:40
So, I mean, you're going to lose some of these recruiting battles, but you also have a chance to really win some as well with this coaching staff
14:48
And I think Nebraska has a legitimate shot at McMorris. Yeah, definitely
14:53
And it's, you know, with Dave on Hall, it just seems like, you know, the coaching staff and him, you know, basically it was like Matt Rule was like, we're not going to Nebraska is not going to be your backup plan
15:04
You know, you wanted to go take a visit to Tennessee and it just doesn't seem really seem like Dave on Hall ever wanted to go to Nebraska
15:10
So I really do believe in that fact of like, let's get guys here that want to be here
15:15
because, you know, it's if guys don't want to be here. I mean, I'm not saying that every guy that wants to be there can be bad for your locker room
15:23
but that does happen. You know what I mean? Like you want everybody on the same page, want everybody committed
15:28
We were talking about that culture stuff on Friday. So if a guy from Nebraska doesn't want to be here, like that's fine
15:33
And so I totally well, I like Dave on Hall's ability. If he doesn't want to be at Nebraska, we don't we don't want him here either
15:39
So good luck to you. And I hope he has a good career. I hope he gets the offer from Tennessee or wherever because he's been trying to move up kind of in that power, you know, in that upper echelon
15:48
He just hasn't got offered yet. So, I mean, it's kind of a weird place to be in your recruitment
15:53
I mean, I believe Nebraska was his only official visit. So it's like, I mean, I'm sure some will come up, especially, you know, but if you're getting into the fall, it's like you got to be a pretty good player to get, you know, to get to something
16:06
Because then teams are just kind of looking at the transfer portal. So it's an interesting decision by him
16:10
um but yeah it was always seemed like always um hall or mcmorris and i really like isaiah mcmorris
16:17
he obviously you know likes this program and um and plus like with malachi coleman i don't
16:23
see as big of a need for davon hall with him in the you know on the team i guess well i mean you
16:29
talk about our receiver room we've talked about it a lot but we've got a lot of bodies in there so
16:34
and a lot of well you know i mean but not just like malachi coleman and i mean jayden doss i
16:40
I would probably also say it's like a little more polished, but then you've got Jaden Lloyd and Bryce Turner
16:45
And like one of those, one of those two guys, like I'm betting on with McGuire and the staff
16:50
like one of those two guys is going to turn out to be a player. Both of them could be really
16:53
but they're very similar in the sense that they've got, you know, track speed
16:57
They're big. They've got pretty good high school numbers in terms of catches and production
17:02
So I, there's a lot to be excited about in that receiver. And that's
17:06
I think we have some more receivers too, from the last class that I'm not even thinking about. Let's see
17:11
I know you mentioned Jaden Doss. And then I'm going to look really quickly
17:16
because there are just so many names that you kind of get lost
17:20
And then you have the returning guys like Xavier Betts. I mean, not even..
17:24
Yeah, and he's got a couple years at least, I believe. So you have a bunch of guys there that can contribute right away And then you have a staff that you look at the wide receiver position and they were focused on depth and so you know as much as Paul have been a good commitment you know I think that
17:43
we have enough guys to where we're not scrambling for a wide receiver it's not like and I hate to
17:50
call out guys like this but it's not like Ken Y Noah is going to be our big transfer and he's
17:55
going to be the guy we rely on and then he falls short you know this is a we have a lot of good
18:00
players you know you talk about um the the tight end and i'm blanking on his name the legacy commit
18:07
uh that we got at the beginning of man keelan keelan smith can go either tight end or wide
18:14
receiver so yeah and he's a beast man he is an absolute beast like he's he's physically he has
18:21
a great body um and i think jeremiah charles yeah that that was the other one i was forgetting
18:26
was jeremiah charles um yeah he's a he's a yeah he's a guy from bob wager's school and i'm pretty
18:32
sure he's a guy that like dominated in the basketball court to run track well yeah yep
18:38
it's a ton two guys and they're both and debetris bell i'm pretty sure is like a top 500 recruit so
18:46
from Tennessee. So, yeah. So yeah, receiver's not a big worry. We talked about Gateland Bear too
18:53
and that's probably a good thing with Gateland Bear. If they can get him, you know, he's not a
18:58
good thing, but they'll have, they won't be in need of receivers in the next couple of years
19:02
I guess we can just say that in the tight end room is looking pretty solid too. I'm obviously
19:07
I would love to get Carter Nelson who just visited Notre Dame this weekend. I've seen a little bit
19:12
I saw Tom Loy put out something, but he's a pretty big Notre Dame homer, as we've talked about
19:18
So I do think that this recruitment – the thing that got me was when Greg Smith changed his prediction
19:25
because I trust him for Nebraska stuff. I do too. He's not usually an over-the-top type of predictor, so he's solid
19:33
So it seemed like – I think this is kind of true. Nebraska probably had the lead before he took that visit to Georgia
19:41
And I think that that really kind of opened his eyes and it probably to, you know, it's, it's definitely possible that he could have, you know, not been quite sure about where he stood with Georgia going into the visit since they already had two tight ends
19:54
You know, he could have been kind of like ambiguous about like how the staff felt about him and, and they may have just totally put that to rest
20:00
Like, you know, they could have, it seems like they're like, we don't give a crap about these other tight ends
20:04
Like we do want you in this class, no matter what. And that might have been what he needed to hear
20:09
And then with everything else, all the talented recruits and, you know, basically everybody from Georgia that, you know, goes to the NFL
20:16
it just seems like all of that combination put Georgia in the lead for now. I'm not saying it's a slam dunk and the door's closed
20:22
but it seems like it's getting there. But as long as he takes that visit, Nebraska at least has a puncher's chance
20:28
on June 23rd. I mean, you're going up against a two-time defending national champion
20:33
It's not going to be easy. but um we got danny dimes though and he is one hell of a recruiter it seems like so you never
20:39
know i'll be i'll definitely be uh watching that elite 11 finals closely because those are some
20:46
big names too that are in there and to have danny in there is really really great i'm excited for
20:53
the future we're gonna miss out on some guys but i don't think with this stuff it's gonna be for
20:57
lack of trying no and like we said with carter nelson they've done everything that they could do
21:02
there wasn't one more thing that they could have done outside of like Matt rule camping outside of the kid's house or like breaking recruiting
21:08
You know what I mean? There's just, there's not much else that Matt rule could have done to
21:12
you know, change this recruitment. So, and they pivoted to, you know
21:17
Michael Burt, who I actually really liked when I watch his film, I think he's definitely underrated
21:22
And I know it's easy to say that about every kid, but I just, to me, honestly
21:26
it's, it's like with this coaching staff, I just feel much more confident
21:30
you know, in their evaluations than what like 24-7 sports is saying about a kid
21:35
You know, that's just how I feel about it. So if Nebraska's on Michael Burt, like, I trust them more than the bullshit rankings
21:41
Yeah, and, you know, this coaching staff has shown that they're not afraid to get into the dirty areas of recruiting
21:48
to find the hidden gems. I mean, you look at a guy, for example, like Turner or Quinton Ives
21:54
you know, guys that weren't ranked prior to them committing to Nebraska. I mean, it seems like they have a lot of connections throughout
22:01
you know, the country, quite frankly, in terms of recruiting, and they could find those, you know, diamonds in the rough
22:07
And that's not to say that Bert is going to be a diamond in the rough for long
22:10
I don't think he's going to be a diamond in the rough for much longer
22:14
but it does, you know, they're just trying to illustrate the point that Nebraska has a way of, you know, trying to, you know
22:22
get as many offers out as possible to guys that, you know
22:27
may be a little bit unknown, but can still play at a high level
22:31
yeah and i think you know like with bert is a is a good example i mean he's not right now he's not
22:39
ranked in the 24 7 composite he's a three star in their own rankings but i mean he just went on a
22:45
run of big 10 offers so i'm like he's definitely going to be a composite three star at some point
22:51
like you know he's going to be in the it would shock me if he wasn't ranked in the top 1000
22:56
like by the time he finally like gets to commit i believe he's taking an official visit this
23:01
weekend. So it seems like Nebraska has a good shot to take the lead, but, you know, Iowa and
23:06
these other teams are in the mix for sure. So, and Iowa and Minnesota both got him on campus and
23:11
offered him before Nebraska. So, I mean, we saw how that impacted things with Inguerson. So we'll
23:17
see what happens with Michael Burt, but I definitely like him and feel like he's kind of a nice
23:22
secondary option for this class if they aren't able to get, you know, Carter Nelson. So that's
23:28
basically you know kind of how i i feel about it it's it's a it's a good room and people you know
23:33
where you forget about ian flint too but he's a he's a heck of an athlete and i think he's another
23:37
guy that could be a solid piece in this room too i was just about to say we have we have depth at
23:41
the position you know guys like flint you know guys like ishmael smith flores it's not as if we
23:47
need a tight end or else this offense is gonna be without one we have depth and i don't want to say
23:53
backup options, but we don't need a tight end to the point where if we don't get one
23:59
then it will be a struggle. The Scoti staff has done a nice job of, you know, getting depth at
24:04
several positions to where if we miss out on a guy, it's not a big scramble like it, quite frankly
24:10
used to be. And yeah, I totally agree with you, you know, in terms of that they definitely have
24:17
a plan of attack, you know, with things. They're very meticulous kind of about how they put their
24:23
board together and Ishmael Smith Flores mentioning him he's a guy that I really think has a bright
24:28
bright future playing football I mean I think he played football for like one year and under Bob
24:32
Wager like at Texas Arlington he's he's a big kid played basketball I love tight ends that play
24:38
basketball I just do um they've got that athleticism those I mean if a kid can go up and get like a
24:44
rebound and can catch the ball in the post like they can just they just tend to be able to catch
24:48
to the football. So I feel like he's got out of all the kids in the 2023 class, like he's one as
24:54
a sleeper, I really think could surprise people in a year or two, because it's just like, he's such
24:59
a raw specimen right now. And they've got a bunch of those guys. And Matt Rule just really is
25:03
comfortable in his own skin because, you know, he's been, he's been at Baylor. He's been at
25:08
Temple. He's been in the NFL. I think he, he knows that he knows what an NFL player looks like
25:13
or at least he knows what the base, like the base of, you know
25:17
what traits you need to be a successful college football player. And so I think he's really able to identify those
25:23
And I think he feels confident in the staff that he's hired to identify those traits too
25:27
So they're really putting a lot on, you know, our own evaluations and betting a lot on that
25:32
And we'll see how it works out. But I feel confident in the way that they're going about things on the recruiting trail
25:36
I feel confident in the way Terrence Knight is going about things on the recruiting trail too
25:40
I mean, you take a look at, you know, for example, Terry, you know, as a commitment, you know, Knighton, you know, probably saw what we saw, an athletic guy who can get after the quarterback quickly
25:51
That fits very well in today's modern game of NFL. You know, the speed component that a wide receiver brings to the table that a guy like, you know, Bryce Turner has, Jalen Lloyd has, you know, those type of guys, that fits very well in today's offensive-minded NFL
26:05
So they are recruiting guys whose game can translate strongly at an NFL level, you know, in theory
26:12
Obviously you know for some of these guys you know they got to finish their college careers and we have to see how they play But you know they have all the base traits that would make a successful NFL player on you know both sides of the football yeah definitely I agree with that and I think yeah it puts Nebraska
26:29
in a good spot in this recruiting class the next couple of weekends are going to be really
26:32
important this weekend and June 23rd is the big one that's when you know McMorris is coming
26:38
Daniel Kalin's coming Carter Nelson's coming a bunch of guys so the momentum I think is trending
26:43
in the right direction. We've got nine commitments now in 2024 with, you know, Coke, Coke, excuse me
26:50
being put onto the list. But yeah, so I like where this class is trending. You know, we're going to
26:57
be moving forward now, actually having, you know, some, it's kind of a dead period time for the
27:02
football team. I know they're, you know, kids are reporting for the summer and the new kids, but
27:06
there's not a lot of like, you know, practices and things. It's not like they're having a ton of
27:11
I think outside of like their summer, you know, weightlifting and conditioning programs, I don't think they do a lot in terms of team activities over the next month or two
27:19
No, I, you know, I bet you they're just working, you know, at home or whatever on, you know, certain drills and certain aspects of things
27:26
But I'll tell you what, it's not a dead, a dead boring time for this coaching staff
27:31
They've been really getting after it these past couple of days. And, you know, it's really fun to see them kind of, you know, seal the deal with some of these commitments that can really make a difference in, you know, in the future
27:44
I mean, you look at Terry, you look at Mario Buford, even Daniel Kalin
27:48
I mean, I'm very excited about where the future of this program is headed
27:53
And, you know, I think the staff recognizes talent and, you know, they recognize in-state and Midwest talent
28:00
And that's going to be important. I'll be interested to see, you know, if that strategy carries over to a place like California and, you know, if they can make any California inroads
28:12
But, you know, at the very least, they've shown that they're going to be a force to be reckoned with in terms of Midwest recruiting
28:18
And I think that's a good base to start. Yeah, essentially, if you can lock down and get to the point where Nebraska can get, you know, or be a team in the mix for a lot of the top Midwest recruits, I think that's a good starting point
28:30
I'm having Texas, you know, I do like getting a foot in the door in Pennsylvania
28:35
You know, they got some kids from Pennsylvania last cycle. They're Stone Saunders is a Pennsylvania kid and they've definitely made some positive inroads there
28:43
So Florida, too. We've seen Florida in this class, you know, and the last class as well, honestly
28:48
So there's definitely I think they've got some good pipelines to rely on
28:53
And I do think they're going to keep expanding out. You know, they're really trying to hit Missouri and got Keelan Smith, that St. Louis area
29:01
You know, they were really in on Andrew Sprague. I would like to see him get a little bit more into Arizona
29:07
You know, I think that that's kind of an untapped region. A lot of the Pac-12 teams kind of hit it right now
29:12
But there's a lot of guys in Arizona and California that kind of take their recruitment process a little bit slower
29:18
So it'll be interesting to see if Nebraska does get out there. But mainly, you know, getting, you know, the official visits
29:26
We should mention, I think we almost forgot it, but Caleb Benning was another unofficial visitor
29:31
And, you know, he got a crystal ball on Saturday from Mike Schaefer of Husker 24-7
29:36
So that's a positive sign. He's going to, I think, take an official visit
29:40
either this weekend or next weekend. He's still locking that in, but feels like Nebraska's
29:45
in a position where, you know, they could try to lock down his recruitment
29:49
I think that Caleb Benning is saying that he wants to decide in December
29:55
I guess we'll see if he sticks to that time frame. But at any rate, it feels like Nebraska has moved to the front of the line with him as well
30:01
Hopefully dad gives him a little bit of a push. But, you know, I really like Benning
30:06
He's fast. You know, he's a good tackler. He takes a lot of good angles in pursuit
30:11
And, you know, I think he would really fit well in this defense. And, you know, you could say, oh, it's another Husker Legs
30:17
and you're only taking him because, you know, he's a legacy and blah, blah, blah, and this and that
30:22
Well, no, they're good football players. I mean, these kids, we're not just taking them because, you know, they're a legacy
30:27
and we feel like we have an obligation. They're good football players. And, you know, betting certainly fits into that category
30:34
And, you know, I'm hoping that Nebraska can seal a deal with them
30:37
and, you know, continue the good momentum, you know, that they've been able to have in state
30:42
because I think he would really fit well in this defense. he's just a great athlete he very very fast and he can cover really well too so I'll be interested
30:54
to see how that recruitment plays out but I feel good about our chances I really do and one thing
30:58
that's interesting with him I think too is he's lengthened in the 700s but you know 24-7 sports
31:04
has him as the fifth ranked player in the state of Nebraska in their own rankings um he also hasn't
31:09
really been that active on the recruitment on the like the football evaluation um tour or whatever
31:15
because he's been playing AAU basketball, which is kind of interesting. I'm sure that's probably hurt his ranking a little bit
31:21
But I like guys that play multiple sports, and I dig that. I think that's a good trait to have
31:26
And it's a good trait. I'm not saying that you take a kid because they want to play at Nebraska
31:31
but if you get a good football player, these guys all have – it's not like Caleb Benning, Nebraska's his only Power 5 offer
31:37
or some of these other guys. So you're getting guys that are wanted by other Power 5 schools
31:41
that playing for Nebraska is important to them. And I think that that does matter. And, you know, having the understanding of the history and the legacy and all that type of stuff doesn't make a huge difference, but it does make some difference in building the type of culture that you want to build in order to have success
31:57
and you know you talk about kids understanding the legacy one guy I'm watching for in 2025 is
32:03
Christian Jones I mean he's another guy that I think Nebraska should really take a long look at
32:09
and they probably have quite frankly but you know hopefully they'll be able to land him and you know
32:14
continue the good momentum in 2025 he most recently took an unofficial visit to Canada
32:19
State in April and he took one to Nebraska in April as well but I'll be interested to see
32:24
how his recruitment plays out because he's going to be a really good football player and
32:28
hopefully nebraska can make some inroads in there before some of the bigger schools
32:32
really start to take a look at him yeah he's another one i've heard a lot of good things about
32:37
and i just feel like yeah nebraska does it has done a really good job of making the in-state kids
32:43
feel prioritized and getting them on campus offering that i mean there's been a few uh bert
32:48
michael bert inguerson and teddy rezak this cycle that nebraska didn't offer first but i mean
32:53
And even though Rule, but you just, you have to think too. I mean, Matt Rule was just hired in November in the 2024 class
32:59
Like, yeah, I mean, you're still focused on 2023, but most, a lot of these offers with these 2024 kids
33:06
like you're making, you're getting in contact with them fairly early. So Nebraska was behind the eight ball a little bit there
33:12
And I think you can see in 2025 where they're just a little more organized
33:16
in terms of getting to these kids as early as possible, the in-state recruits
33:20
And for what Nebraska may have lacked in 2024 in the state of Nebraska
33:25
they're, you know, doing a good job of at least trying to make up for it in the state of Texas
33:29
So, I mean, I know people will say, you know, they want more in-state recruits and stuff like that
33:34
And while I think that's important, I want ballers. You know, I just want players who can play at a high level
33:40
and continue to play. And if for some cycles that means not as many kids from the state of Nebraska
33:45
I'm okay with that too. I mean, I don't think, you know, for example, two kids from the state of Nebraska in 2027 means that they're completely ignoring the state because they've already done a good job of keeping the commitments for 2023 and, you know, really trying to make inroads for 2024 and 2025
34:05
I mean, I really have no complaints. I mean, I know you mentioned, you know, they missed out on some guys
34:10
But other than that, you know, I think they're doing a good job of solidifying the Midwest
34:15
yep they have and they've done a good job of making themselves a big presence again in the
34:20
state of nebraska i think matt rule has really rebuilt that with the coaching staff so yeah um
34:25
football recruiting is in a good place and i feel like we'll go ahead and wrap this episode up make
