Reuben , The Room Of Good Intentions & The Transfer Of Leadership
37 views
Feb 20, 2025
I've looked at Joseph and his brothers complicated relationship in the book of Genesis in the past and I thought I understood all the intricacies in the story. I revisited it again in the past month and half and zeroed in on Reuben. There are just several things in the narrative concerning Reuben that didn't sit well with me. I believe the holy spirit wanted me to dig deeper and think through a lot of the smaller features within the meta narrative in order to understand Reuben's actions and the motive behind them. good morning guys on this is ty
0:04
again and I have another study for you
0:07
this morning I've been trying to do this
0:09
for a while now but I didn't get a
0:12
chance to because of work and other
0:15
stuff but you know I felt like this
0:18
morning was the right time for me to do
0:19
this so here I am now I entitled this
0:24
series Rubin the rumor of good
0:27
intentions and it transfer of leadership
0:29
now I've looked at Joseph and his
0:31
brothers complicated relationship in the
0:33
book of Genesis in the past and for some
0:36
reason I thought like I understood all
0:38
the intricacies and the story but then I
0:41
went back again and looked at it and for
0:43
almost like a month and a half close to
0:45
two months my mind my whole focus was on
0:48
Reuben there are just several things in
0:51
the story concerning Reuben that did not
0:54
sit well with me so and I believe the
0:57
Holy Spirit one amelie dig a little
0:58
deeper and think through a lot of the
1:00
smaller features within the bigger
1:03
narrative so in order for me to
1:05
understand it you know I kind of just
1:07
focused on Reuben now if you don't know
1:10
Joseph's life and everything that he he
1:14
had been through as a young man you can
1:16
go back in the book of Genesis I think
1:18
starting on chapter 37 and read on and
1:22
because that's gonna help definitely if
1:24
you want to understand the entire show
1:28
this morning so I'm gonna go back and
1:30
I'm gonna actually share my screen with
1:32
you and I've like prepared a slide that
1:36
will help us understand you so let's
1:38
let's do that now okay and again when
1:42
you look at like when you look at
1:46
scriptures the one thing you want to do
1:49
is this read read read and read it again
1:52
and again before until you understand it
1:55
I don't want to claim to be an old oh
1:57
that's not what I'm doing
1:59
but what I want to be careful to do is
2:02
to correctly divide the Word of God says
2:05
exactly what he says what is what is it
2:09
on the passage is trying to tell us
2:11
I don't want to extrapolate I don't want
2:13
to do too many extrapolation
2:15
because you can get in trouble for doing
2:17
it because now you begin to like use
2:20
your own imagination and that's not what
2:22
you want to do you want to ask the Holy
2:23
Spirit to to enlighten your mind so you
2:25
can correctly divide the Word of God
2:28
because this is serious stuff and I take
2:30
this very seriously
2:31
all right so les let's go now this is
2:36
Reuben the room of good intentions and
2:38
they transfer of leadership so first
2:40
thing we want to do is this who is
2:43
Reuben
2:44
now Reuben is Jacob's first one from
2:46
Leah and the meaning of his name is
2:49
found in Genesis 29 32 and Leah
2:53
conceived and bore a son and she called
2:55
his name Reuben for she said because the
2:59
Lord has looked for my afflictions or
3:00
now my husband will love me that is
3:04
carry with it
3:05
this idea of earning law keep that in
3:08
the back ahead and then as we go on
3:10
we're gonna get back to you at some
3:12
point okay now for those who don't know
3:14
actually I don't need to say this now
3:16
let's let it go now I have some
3:20
highlights from Reubens life again this
3:21
morning's focus is Reuben okay now have
3:24
the good ones not the good ones
3:26
in Genesis 30 he says there in China in
3:30
verse 14 in the days of wheat harvest
3:32
Reuben went and found Mandrax in the
3:36
field and brought them to his mom Leah
3:38
the magic was supposedly improved like
3:42
they were supposed to improve fertility
3:43
in woman's so Reuben cared for his mom
3:46
in the sense that he wanted to have her
3:48
have more children because she wasn't
3:51
loved by Jacob but I'm assuming he hoped
3:53
that the more children she had the more
3:56
she will be locked because that's what
3:58
he was in that context at a time
4:00
fertility was a virtue and remember
4:03
Rachel couldn't have any children so
4:04
leah was the only one producing
4:06
children's home Reuben went out and said
4:09
you know what I care about my mom I'm
4:11
gonna bring more matrix so she can use
4:13
it and have more children so dark and
4:16
lager much more because leah was
4:18
basically forced onto Jacob Laban strict
4:22
Laban was layers - Leah Rachel's dad
4:25
each strict on Jacob intermarrying Leah
4:27
and you can
4:28
go back to look at our story in the
4:29
earliest chapters of Genesis okay I'm
4:32
not gonna go into this morning now more
4:34
positive highlights now in Genesis 37 22
4:38
22 this is where Joseph goes in strongly
4:42
check on his progress because his dad
4:44
same thing and this is what his brothers
4:46
decide to do they say come now let us
4:49
kill his boy and throw him into one
4:51
repeat and then we said I first animal
4:54
has devoured him and we will see what
4:56
will become of his dreams
4:57
but when Reuben heard about it he
5:00
rescued him out of their hand saying let
5:02
us not take his life and Reuben said to
5:04
them shed no blood throw him into his
5:07
this bit here in the wilderness but the
5:10
gnarly hand on him
5:11
the him I rescued him are they of their
5:13
hand to restore him to his father now
5:15
again I put the Hindley in red and
5:18
they're in in red as well then he wanted
5:21
to rescue George Joseph this is Reuben
5:23
from his brothers in order to restore
5:25
him to his father keep this in mind
5:27
we'll get back to later okay now we're
5:30
gonna look at the negative highlights
5:31
from Reubens life in Genesis 35 21 to 22
5:35
now Israel is also Jacob so I like
5:39
saying Jacob better jacob journeyed on
5:41
and pitched his tent beyond it half a
5:43
there or either I don't know and while
5:46
Joseph and Jacob lived in our land
5:48
Reuben went and laid with built heights
5:50
while his concubine and Jacob heard
5:53
about it - Reuben basically defined his
5:56
father's bed he defied Jacob by sleeping
6:00
with Jacob's concubine and that cost him
6:04
his firstborn inheritance so keep all
6:08
this in the back here as we carry on
6:09
okay you see what Reuben just did there
6:11
this was this is major into
6:13
understanding this entire story okay we
6:16
need to keep that in mind now in Genesis
6:18
42 36 to 38 and Jacob their father said
6:22
to them you have bereaved me of my
6:24
children
6:25
Joseph is no more and similarly is no
6:27
more and now you would take Benjamin
6:29
all this has come against me then Reuben
6:32
said was father kill my two sons if I do
6:36
not bring him back to you put him in my
6:38
hands and I will bring him back to you
6:40
but he said my son Benjamin shall not go
6:43
down with you for his brother is dead
6:45
and he's the only one left
6:46
now look this is a very rational
6:49
suggestion by Reuben and I'll get back
6:52
to that to us on point saying kill my
6:54
children all right keep dying back your
6:56
head let's let's go back to tellus this
7:00
is now we're gonna look at the room of
7:02
good intentions now Reuben seemed to
7:06
always desire to do the right thing when
7:08
you look deep into the narrative there
7:11
are certain red flags I want the
7:13
one-week hush that we shed some light on
7:15
Rubens character and leadership
7:17
abilities
7:18
now I've already mentioned the fact that
7:20
he defiled his father's bed and that is
7:22
not a good example for his brothers his
7:24
younger brothers but there are other
7:26
things that I wanna I want to show you
7:29
they'll reveal some more stuff about his
7:31
character okay and we don't look at the
7:33
media core leadership all right now in
7:36
Genesis 37 1 2 it says there in the
7:40
passage Joseph's been 17 years old was
7:43
pasturing the flock of his brothers he
7:45
was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and
7:47
Zilpah as far as wives and Joseph
7:50
brought a bad report of them to their
7:53
father why do I bring up Joseph now he
7:56
exposed his brothers lack of care as he
7:59
pertained to the ship and they hated him
8:01
the more because of it now what does I
8:03
have to do Reuben Reuben was the oldest
8:06
and by default he was supposed to set
8:08
the example
8:09
hence Joseph's report implied that
8:12
somehow the leadership was in question
8:13
if Reuben was doing the right thing
8:16
there wouldn't have be a bar before now
8:18
you see what's going on they already
8:20
like Reubens leadership is like in
8:22
question all right now let's let's read
8:25
Genesis 32 7 12 to 17 and you're gonna
8:29
understand why this is important yes I'm
8:31
gonna actually go here and in and then
8:33
put that over here Genesis 37 5 to 17
8:41
okay
8:42
I didn't spell it right I'm sorry
8:46
now that's where Joseph is being sold by
8:49
his brothers right now his brothers want
8:51
to pasture their flock their father's
8:54
me as she came or shake hang I
8:56
don't know how to say right and Jacob
8:58
said to Joseph are not your brother's
9:00
passing the Flocka shake him come I will
9:03
send you to them and then Joseph said
9:05
Here I am so he said to him go now and
9:07
see if it's work with your brothers and
9:09
with a flock and bring me word so he
9:12
sent him from the value of Hebron and he
9:14
came to shake him and him and found him
9:16
wandering in the field and the man asked
9:18
him what are you seeking and he said
9:21
this is Joseph I'm seeking my brothers
9:23
and he said tell me prayers where were
9:26
their pasture in the flock and the men
9:28
said they have gone away for I heard him
9:30
say let us go to Dolphin so Joseph went
9:33
after his brothers and father my
9:34
daughter okay let's go back to it is now
9:38
you see this is important
9:40
Joseph goes to shake him because his dad
9:43
is always sending Joseph to like
9:45
supervises products right again that's
9:47
the leadership in question now when
9:48
Joseph goes to like shake him he does
9:50
does his brother stay user could have
9:52
easily say you know what I'm just gonna
9:54
go home I've done my job
9:55
I came to say and be now here I'm going
9:57
back but no he doesn't stop there he
10:00
sees the man I tell him your brother's
10:02
wanted Doulton so he leaves and goes all
10:04
the way to look for his brothers now he
10:06
are much more responsible Joseph is
10:08
there now why did his brother sleeve que
10:12
him I think they did because they wanted
10:15
to possibly avoid Joseph's
10:16
supervision they just got so sick and
10:18
tired of him saying you know what this
10:20
kid is probably gonna come here again
10:22
and check on us let's go someplace else
10:25
but he found him okay let's let's keep
10:28
let's keep going now leadership in
10:30
question Reuben said to them when Joseph
10:33
found him they saw Joseph coming those
10:35
are his brothers right and they say
10:36
we're gonna kill Joseph and Reuben said
10:39
shed no blood to him to speak here in
10:42
the wilderness but the nor lay a hand on
10:43
him that he might rescue him out of
10:45
their hand to restore him to his father
10:47
my question is why can Reuben residues
10:51
right then and there and the answer lies
10:53
in verse 29 you see below this is it now
10:57
a Reuben return to the pit and saw that
10:58
Joseph was not in
10:59
hit heat toys clothes and returned to
11:02
his birth and say the boy is gone and I
11:04
where shall I go the question is this
11:07
where I was Ruben when Joseph was being
11:10
sold
11:11
where was he was he supposed to be
11:14
careful to shape alongside his brothers
11:15
so he wasn't there when Joseph was so so
11:18
therefore he could not rescue Joseph he
11:20
left his responsibilities as a leader
11:23
and left the place and Joseph is being
11:27
sold an ice-like where I where shall I
11:30
go where shall I go keep that in mind
11:33
III okay let's keep going now let's read
11:36
Genesis 40 to 18 to 21 and we're gonna
11:39
look at verse 22 at some point let me go
11:41
here
11:43
Genesis 42 the thing is what did I say
11:48
again it into 21 or 18 to 21 there's so
11:54
many things I can't remember this is
11:59
when Joseph and his brothers it's like
12:02
several years have gone by and that is
12:04
like if I mean and Joseph is the leader
12:06
in Egypt one of the leaders there the
12:08
second in command and there's there's no
12:11
food in to work aligned so Joseph and
12:13
his brothers brothers Reuben on the town
12:17
on as a leader they go to Egypt to try
12:19
and find food and Joseph so meet this
12:22
guy through some testing right so he
12:25
throws them in jail for a little bit and
12:27
then he comes back in the morning
12:28
and then gets and says this when the
12:31
turgid joseph said to them do this and
12:34
you leave but I feel God if you're
12:36
honest man let one of your brothers
12:37
remain confined when you are in custody
12:39
and let the rest go and carry grain for
12:42
the famine of your household and bring
12:43
your youngest product to me
12:45
so your words will be verified or tested
12:47
then you shall not die and they did so
12:49
then they say to one another in truth we
12:51
are guilty concerning our brother in
12:53
that we saw the distress of his soul
12:55
when he begged us and we did not listen
12:57
this is why this distress has come upon
13:00
us and now like scared to death but I
13:03
don't want to focus on that I want to
13:05
focus on what Reuben there's here in
13:06
verse 22 Reuben says did I not tell you
13:11
not to sin against the boy
13:13
you did not listen so now that comes a
13:15
reckoning for his blood I continue to
13:18
see a trend here like I say pointing the
13:20
finger it truly this job is the use of
13:23
we well let me read on here and Joseph
13:27
took Simeon from the atom and bound him
13:29
before their eyes and my question is
13:31
this why were similar taken into custody
13:34
semen was the second born right Reuben
13:38
was the oldest so how come Reuben does
13:40
not say take me and then the rest can go
13:43
no he puts Simeon there the second born
13:46
and then he goes back home with his
13:48
brothers now let's remember Jesus word
13:51
what did Jesus do he said better have
13:55
one has look oh my goodness let me go
13:57
back to John 15 to read this I keep
14:00
forgetting he says hey I think it's in
14:03
John 15:13 this is what Jesus says
14:07
greater love has no one than this that
14:09
someone lay down his life for his
14:11
friends or his brothers right now look
14:13
at what Reuben does he put similar in
14:16
custody and goes back home with his
14:19
brothers you see what I mean he walks
14:23
free and again that shows that he was
14:26
more concerned with his own safety than
14:28
the rest now let's keep going
14:31
now let's read Genesis 42 36 we're gonna
14:34
sit somewhere again
14:37
Genesis 42 this is a lot and we're guys
14:40
but it's good stuff right and Jacob your
14:47
father said to them you have believed me
14:49
of my children Joseph is no more and
14:51
similars no more and now you would take
14:53
Benjamin all this has come against me
14:55
now Jacob we scattered death and this is
14:58
what Rubin says in verse 37 and 38 Rubin
15:01
said to his father I thought I was gonna
15:02
get back to this right kill my two sons
15:05
if I do not bring him back to you will
15:07
put him in my hands I now bring him back
15:10
to you
15:10
but Jacob says my son shall not go down
15:13
with you for his brother is dead and
15:14
he's the only one left if harm shall
15:16
happen to him on the journey that you
15:18
were to make you bring down my gray
15:20
hairs with sorrow to the grave now Jacob
15:23
Clare didn't trust and Reubens
15:25
leadership any more and
15:26
not entrust anything else into his Ange
15:29
and Rubin once the game makes the most
15:31
asinine decision I've ever heard of
15:33
offering to of his son instead of
15:35
offering himself for Benjamin safety he
15:37
tells his dad take my two sons I mean
15:41
how crazy is that
15:42
what about tech me do you know what I
15:45
mean now let's keep going
15:48
now let's read Genesis 43 1 2 8 and see
15:52
what's going on there the brothers who
16:00
come back to eat the bride they want to
16:02
go back now the famine was severe in the
16:04
lane and when they had eaten acquainted
16:06
that they had brought from Egypt their
16:08
father said to them go again and buy us
16:09
a little food but you just say to them
16:12
the man solemnly wander saying you shall
16:14
not see my face again until you unless
16:16
your brother is with you
16:17
if you send our brother with us we'll go
16:19
down and buy food but if you're not will
16:21
not go down for the man say to us you
16:23
shall not see my face unless your
16:25
brother your brother is with you and
16:28
Jacob said why do you treat me so badly
16:30
I said after tell the Maine but you had
16:32
another brother and they replied the man
16:34
questioned us carefully about ourselves
16:36
and our kindred saying is your father
16:38
still alive do you have another brother
16:40
what we told them was an answer to the
16:42
question to read anyway know that you
16:45
say bring down your brother and Judas
16:48
say to Israel his father send the boy
16:50
with me and we will arise and go that we
16:53
may live and not die wolf we and you and
16:56
also our little ones now this is
16:59
important right and you just say to
17:01
either if I send a boy with me and we
17:04
will arise and go that we may live in or
17:06
die both we and you and also other one
17:08
so he's thing is inclusive here he's
17:10
saying we and then in verse 9 he makes
17:14
this bold bold bold statement I would be
17:18
a pledge of his safety or for his safety
17:20
from my hand you shall require him
17:22
before that if I do not bring him back
17:24
to you and set him before you then let
17:26
me bear the blame forever now do you see
17:29
the difference between Judah and Reubens
17:30
answer Judah offers himself as a ransom
17:33
while Reuben offered his sons and need I
17:36
remind you that the Lord Jesus came out
17:38
of the tribe of Judah
17:39
now you see what's going on there again
17:40
the old testament is always trying to
17:43
give us a picture of the Messiah of the
17:45
Lamb of God right now let's keep going
17:50
now the transfer of leadership finally
17:53
occurs and this is in Genesis 44 30 now
17:55
what happened there is this I'll give
17:57
you a quick background so they go back
17:59
to Egypt with Benjamin and then Joseph
18:02
test them for the last time so what he
18:04
does as they leave he throws his
18:06
favorite cup Joseph scoffing Benjamin
18:08
sack and then as they leave he catches
18:11
up to them and said someone of one of
18:13
you guys stole my my my my cup and then
18:16
he was found in Benjamin sack and so
18:19
when when when he found that he's okay
18:22
you know what I'm gonna take Benjamin
18:23
basically he want to take Benjamin away
18:26
from them and his brothers are like they
18:29
don't know what to do and that's where
18:31
you see Judah
18:32
that's what the transfer of leadership
18:34
finally occurs now therefore as soon as
18:36
I come to your servant my father and the
18:38
boy is not with us then as his life is
18:40
bound up in his boy's life as soon as he
18:42
sees and the boy is done with me he will
18:44
die in your servant will bring down a
18:46
greater sort of your servant father we
18:49
saw to the grain basically Judah is
18:52
pleading for the life of Benjamin say
18:54
look for yourself became a pledge of
18:58
safety for the boy to my father saying I
19:00
father not bring him back to you
19:01
then I shall bear the blame before my
19:03
father all of my life
19:04
now therefore please let your servant
19:06
remain instead of the boy as a servant
19:09
to my Lord and let the boy go back with
19:11
his brothers for how can I go back to my
19:13
father if the boy is done with me I fear
19:15
to see the evil that will find my father
19:17
Judah is pleading say look Joseph I
19:20
doubted up when he still does know that
19:22
this is Joseph take my life instead of
19:25
the boy I made a pledge and after that
19:28
we have ransom but what take me instead
19:30
I know that the boy is the one that took
19:32
your cup but take my life and take me
19:35
and don't take the boy do you see the
19:37
difference between Judah and then Reuben
19:39
you see how Judah just he doesn't blame
19:42
his brothers he said take me because I
19:44
made that pledge take me what does that
19:47
look like the Lord Jesus he
19:50
to take the blame for our mistakes our
19:53
fault our sins and this is the picture
19:56
again in the game in the game let's keep
19:59
going this is the dejected position that
20:03
I did if she juxtapose both frugal and
20:05
Judah you can clearly see the difference
20:07
between their leadership Rubin was
20:09
looking at for himself when nothing is
20:12
why Judah took the blame and was willing
20:14
to lay down his life for the sake of his
20:15
brothers thus again shown am madly madly
20:18
in the work of and life of Christ and I
20:21
keep going back to this idea of the New
20:23
Testament being concealed in the old now
20:26
look this is what I think Judah Rubin
20:29
was doing because he messed up and
20:31
because he slept with his father's wife
20:33
his entire life he tried to repair his
20:37
relationship because even when he wanted
20:39
to save Joseph I think the whole thing
20:41
is this
20:42
let me save Joseph so I can tell Dad the
20:44
brothers wanted to kill kill him what I
20:46
saved him it was almost like trying to
20:49
earn his father's love because of why he
20:51
did so therefore he went back and back
20:53
again and trying to earn his love and
20:55
his love in the process he became all
20:57
about more about him and not about the
21:00
safety and the common work for his
21:04
brothers now I just wanted to throw that
21:07
out there now Jesus came on the tribe of
21:09
Judah and he laid down his life for the
21:11
sake of his brothers
21:12
later his life for the sake of the ship
21:14
and John 15:13 I read that to you before
21:17
and remember when when Jesus was in a
21:20
garden when when the the soldiers came
21:23
to arrest he said to the soldiers let
21:27
this goal take me
21:28
remember that again showing us a picture
21:31
now let's take a look at Jacob blessing
21:33
to both Reuben and Judah and you will
21:35
see what the craziness this is great
21:38
stuff now this is what Jacob's blessing
21:41
is in 49 because before Jacob died he
21:45
says whose sons Reuben you're my
21:48
firstborn my might and the first of my
21:50
strength preeminence in dignity and
21:52
preeminent in power on Stabler's water
21:55
you shall not have preeminence because
21:58
you went up to your father's bed then
22:00
you defile it he went up to my couch
22:04
this is Reuben she was unstable he just
22:07
wasn't stable all right now let's look
22:09
at dooda dooda your brother shall praise
22:13
you your hand shall be on the neck of
22:16
your enemies your father son shall bow
22:19
down before you
22:20
Oh Judah is a lion's carve from the prey
22:24
my son your gun up he stooped down he
22:27
crouched as a lion and as a lioness who
22:29
dares rosen this scepter shall not
22:32
depart from Judah nor the ruler's staff
22:35
from between his feet until the tribute
22:38
comes to him and to him shall be the
22:39
obedience of the peoples binding is fall
22:43
to the vine and his dog is called to the
22:45
choice vine he was he has washed his
22:47
garments in wine and his vesture in a
22:50
blood of grapes
22:50
his eyes are darker than wine and his
22:53
teeth whiter whiter than milk Wow a
22:56
dancehall I put here the prophetic words
22:59
in Judas blessing how to make us bow at
23:01
the Savior's feet and really understand
23:03
the importance of prophecy I don't want
23:05
to be embarrassed because all this stuff
23:08
and all the promises that Jacob gave to
23:11
Judah came to pass
23:13
he ought to make us rejoice because you
23:15
know 10 against the Savior this is this
23:18
is crazy stuff it's authenticated it
23:22
happened to Jesus every blessing here go
23:26
back and read it yourself in Genesis 49
23:28
and read the story of Jesus you see this
23:31
everything here doc bindings fall to the
23:34
vine his donkeys go to the choice vine
23:36
he washed his garments in wine
23:38
the scepter shall not I mean every
23:41
single one of them I remember what Jesus
23:43
did when I saw just came to arrest him
23:45
he asked them to take him only with what
23:48
to let his disciple go there's love with
23:50
them to the very end
23:51
this is this how to make you rejoice
23:54
that the prophetic words came to pass
23:56
and they authenticate exactly what was
23:59
stored thousands of years before it
24:01
happened now I don't know what else to
24:03
tell you what you just go back to read
24:05
the scriptures and then find it for
24:06
yourself this is this makes you do make
24:09
you rejoice alright I hope you have a
24:11
good day guys all right thanks
