Homemade French Croissant Recipe
Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 tsp salt
1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
1 1/4 cups whole milk, warmed
1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
1 1/4 cups unsalted butter, cold
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions:
Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Dissolve the yeast in the warmed milk and let it sit for 5 minutes. Add the melted butter to the milk mixture and stir. Gradually add the liquid mixture to the flour mixture, stirring until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place in a bowl, cover, and refrigerate for 1 hour.
Prepare the Butter Layer: Place the cold butter between two sheets of parchment paper. Using a rolling pin, pound and roll the butter into an 8x8-inch square. Refrigerate until firm but pliable.
Incorporate the Butter: Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a 12x12-inch square. Place the butter square in the center of the dough square, diagonally. Fold the corners of the dough over the butter, enclosing it completely.
