Homemade Bagels Making homemade bagels from scratch is a rewarding experience that brings warm, freshly baked bagels right to your kitchen. With just a few ingredients and a little patience, you can enjoy soft and chewy bagels with a golden, crisp crust. Whether you prefer them plain, sesame, or poppy seed-coated, homemade bagels are perfect for breakfast or a snack. Ingredients: 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting) 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/43°C) 1 tbsp sugar 2 tsp active dry yeast 1 1/2 tsp salt 1 tbsp vegetable oil (plus extra for greasing) 1 tbsp barley malt syrup or honey (for boiling) Optional toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything bagel seasoning, etc. Instructions: Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy and bubbly. Make the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Mix with a spoon or your hands until the dough comes together. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour. Let the dough rise: Lightly grease a bowl with oil and place the dough inside. Cover with a damp towel and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
