The Irish Famine was a period in Irish history from 1845 to 1852 that was known for mass starvation and disease. The period is also called the Great Hunger and during the time, about one million people died and another million fled from Ireland. Ireland's population fell by about 20% and it started one of the greatest mass exoduses from a single island in history. It was a watershed moment in Ireland's history because it permanently changed the island's demographic and its political and cultural landscape.
