If you want a General Motor's electric vehicle, you've actually got some choices. From big and massive, like the HUMMER EV, right down to a more compact footprint, like the Chevy Bolt. What are the differences? What is the same? How do they compare and which one did we choose?

Welcome back to GM-Trucks.com

It's a beautiful day here in New Hampshire. The leaves are out
0:15
The birds are chirping. The sun is bright, and the air is crisp
0:19
There's even some deer feeding in the backwoods, getting ready for the long winter ahead
0:25
In other words, it's absolutely beautiful here today, and super quiet. So the idea of going out in the woods
0:33
and making a lot of noise with a gas engine or an exhaust
0:36
just seems kind of wrong. So I won't. And that's because today I have the biggest and smallest
0:47
electric vehicles that General Motors makes, the GMC Hummer EV pickup and the Chevrolet Bolt
0:55
EUV, the ying and yang of EVs, one made to go on asphalt
1:02
and the other made to travel on dirt and the paths less traveled
1:06
But either one, whether you choose the Hummer or the Bolt, they're both going to provide you
1:13
with the ability for that sweet sound of silence inside and out
1:19
But while the Hummer and the Bolt are both EVs, our question today is, how do they compare
1:26
What's the same? What's different? So let's take General Motors' largest and smallest
1:32
electric vehicles and find out. Probably the most obvious comparison is when you put the two of them side by side
1:41
And while they look really different next to each other, I mean, the Hummer is massive and the Bolt looks kind of tiny
1:49
it's not until you read the actual length and width numbers that you realize there is
1:54
a big difference between the Hummer and the Bolt. For example, the Hummer, its width from mirror to mirror
2:03
is 7.8 feet or 2.3 meters. On the other hand, the Bolt is only 6.7 feet or 2 meters
2:14
which means it's quite a bit narrower. And the differences get even more substantial
2:20
when you think about length and how long they are. Because while the Bolt is only 14.1 feet long
2:28
that's still quite a bit. That's 4.3 meters. The Hummer is 4 feet longer than that at 18 feet or 5.4 meters
2:39
It's just really easy to see there is quite the difference between these two vehicles
2:45
And then when you consider weight, it's even more. Because the Bolt weighs 3,715 pounds, that's 1,685 kilograms
2:57
But the Hummer, on the other hand, weighs 9,046 pounds. That's 4,103 kilograms
3:08
And that means there are 2 and 1 half bolts in weight for every Hummer EV
3:15
And just like there's a big difference between the size of the Hummer and the Bolt
3:19
there's also a big difference in the battery capacities, charging capabilities, and motor configurations
3:25
between the two vehicles as well. For example, the Hummer has a 212 kilowatt hour
3:33
usable battery pack. And combined with the three motors that we have here, that gives us a usable range
3:41
of around 330 miles. Now, granted, with those three motors, the Hummer EV has around 1,000 horsepower, which means, yeah
3:52
it can accelerate pretty quick. Now, when you use that much energy
3:57
you need to refill it just as quickly. And the Hummer EV is good at that too
4:02
It can level 2 charge at 11 and 1 half kilowatts, or even DC fast charge at 350 kilowatts
4:13
But the battery and motor situation in the Bolt is just a little bit different
4:17
In fact, the battery is quite a bit smaller at only 65 kilowatt hours
4:23
And instead of the three motor 1,000 horsepower setup that the Hummer has, the Bolt only has one electric motor
4:31
and makes around 200 horsepower. But despite having a smaller battery and less motors
4:37
in fact, having less motors helps the Bolt and gives it a longer range, it can go for around 250 miles
4:45
on a charge. And when you do need to charge it, it can also charge at 11 and 1 half kilowatts
4:51
on a level 2 charger. But unlike the Hummer at a DC fast charge station
4:56
the Bolt is quite a bit slower at only 50 kilowatts. But that's OK, because the smaller battery pack
5:04
can charge quicker. And that means whether you're driving the Bolt or the Hummer, you'll be
5:10
able to put about 100 miles of range on your vehicle in only around 20 to 30 minutes
5:18
But like the exteriors and the batteries and motors of the Hummer and the Bolt, the interiors
5:24
are different as well. The Bolt has a more traditional car interior
5:30
And like the Hummer, it seats five. And also like the Hummer, it has super cruise
5:35
and can drive itself on certain roads. The Bolt also has a very large sunroof, full navigation
5:42
system, Bose audio system, heated and cooled seats, and some extra storage in the back
5:50
But the Hummer EV takes all of those interior features and cranks them up to 11
5:56
That means the interior of the Hummer is just plain out of this world and features
6:01
a lunar landscape theme. It also has four removable roof panels, integrated Google Maps
6:08
navigation, an impressive 14-speaker Bose audio system, heated and cooled seats, but also some space in the back
6:16
and space in the front. So after talking about all of those differences
6:21
and similarities, it's time to talk about the biggest difference of them all between the Bolt and the Hummer
6:28
And that is the price and availability of the two of them
6:33
See, while you can go down to a Chevy dealer and most likely find or order a Bolt
6:40
good luck doing that with a Hummer. And when you talk about pricing, the differences
6:46
get even crazier because you can go down to that dealer and get a new Chevy Bolt for between $30,000 to $40,000
6:55
But if you want to get a GMC Hummer EV, well, you're going to have to stand in line
7:00
And that's because the waiting list for these vehicles, the pickup and the SUV variants, is around 100,000 people deep
7:11
And that's not even considering that this is also then a $100,000 vehicle
7:18
So which one of these EVs is better for you? Well, I'll let you make that determination
7:25
But for me, I chose the Hummer. And not only did I choose the Hummer
7:29
I chose it two whole years ago, which means that if you're waiting in line for one of these things
7:36
you're going to have to wait a little bit longer. But if you need an EV today or next week or next month
7:43
well, the Bolt EV is actually a really, really good choice. And I say that because when you compare the Bolt to the Hummer
7:54
well, the Bolt has about 90% of the features that the Hummer does
8:00
And when you compare the range, it turns out the Bolt has about 2 thirds of the miles of range
8:05
that the Hummer does as well. But the pot gets really sweet when you compare pricing
8:12
And that's because the Bolt only costs about 1 third of the price of the Hummer EV
8:20
But considering that this is GM-Trucks.com, you can expect to see a lot more of this Hummer
8:27
EV, which is our new long-term test vehicle. So if you're interested in hearing more about that Hummer
8:34
and you haven't already subscribed to our channel, why don't you do that right now for me, please
8:40
and hit that notification button. So the minute that we post more Hummer content
8:44
you will be notified. Well, hey, guys. Thanks a lot for spending your time with me here today
