She knows how proud I am of her. It's amazing. She came on in the audition process for Wolf of
0:07
Wall Street and I said this person is going to have an incredible career. She's fantastic
0:12
Leo and Benicio, welcome to Heart's Evening Show. How are we lads? Are we all right? Fantastic. Doing good. Thanks
0:17
Thank you. Well, I've just watched One Battle After Another. I thought it was absolutely
0:21
incredible. I have questions. I've got things I would love to know. You both have a really
0:26
impressive track record of getting involved in some amazing causes. You're very passionate about
0:31
helping people, especially those without a voice. Benicio, did you have personal reasons for wanting
0:36
to do this film, or did you just think it was a great story? When it comes to the character
0:40
you know, when you do an interpretation, you really look for the story in you. So it became
0:48
a purpose in a way that my character would be the noble person who he
0:56
is trying to help people. So it did become in a way
1:02
a reason to do it. But it started because of the story and
1:08
the cast and the director. So a perfect storm. I love that. Not particularly
1:14
in that order. Leo, you've mentioned that you've wanted to work with Benicio for a long time
1:20
It's been a long time coming. It has finally happened. You two on screen together. Can you tell me about that experience
1:25
Did it live up to your expectations? Did it live up to my expectations? Exceeded my expectations, if I'm being..
1:31
Sorry to ask you that, right? Yeah. Yes. I'm watching. What you look for well not what you look for but you hope that the experience will have a tremendous amount of specificity in the character work because that specificity in the character work defines your relationship with
1:52
that character and therefore defines your character and and the fact that you know we
1:58
we knew paul and i knew when we were discussing this character of sensei carlos that there was
2:02
absolutely one person for the job and that was benicio he was off shooting another movie
2:06
Phoenicians. We stopped production by two or three months to wait for him because it was just nobody
2:13
that could bring Sensei Carlos to life. And he came in with a tremendous amount of ideas and
2:21
specificity as to the code of who this character was, what he would do and wouldn't do. Because
2:27
my character is this ex-revolutionary that has his backup against the wall that is looking for
2:33
answers and who does he go to he goes to his daughter's karate teacher because he's got nowhere
2:38
else to go i'm in his hands and so he created this ecosystem by the the choices that he made of what
2:45
you know what is what his character would do that changed the course of the whole movie and that
2:50
that gives you the kind of freedom and fun and exhilaration as an actor to say wow we're on a
2:57
separate road trip now a lot of that stuff wasn't written in into the screenplay we kind of veered
3:03
off into a side road of sensei and bob and that was as a result of the choices that he made very
3:09
early on and the specificity of his character work so it exceeded my expectations well we all
3:14
participated in that but yes thank you leo it's right back at him so how does that work if you're
3:20
also actors but also friends do you ever feel like it your place to um maybe give compliments like if you ever maybe send leo a message gone uh like just see one of your films what was brilliant five stars or like a good luck message anything like that Yeah you know when I see something good like Leo is in this film you just tip your hat
3:41
I remember, and I've told him this, but I remember having the pleasure of watching Leo on that phone
3:50
in Sense's apartment where he's sitting on that couch. He never moves
3:55
He's on the phone. He's just yapping with someone else on the other line. And I remember seeing, watching it with Paul
4:02
Paul watching Leo doing it, and Paul laughing hysterically. And I was laughing too
4:07
And we were just like watching him do this thing and just really feeling that moment
4:16
And it was really like, really made it kind of like a family having the director really enjoying Leo's performance there and myself as well
4:27
So it just created a great habitat, you know, to take chances to explore things
4:34
You know, I think the movie is spectacular, really. I love that game recognizes game amongst actors
4:40
Actually, we had a really nice message from one of your old co-stars
4:44
We talked to Margot Robbie the other day. She was so excited about seeing the new film
4:49
We actually got a little message from her if you want to have a little look. And actually I've heard the movie is incredible
4:54
Like incredible. I'm dying to see it. When are you going to get to see it again? Are you going to get to see it before you talk to him
4:59
Are you going to get to see it on Monday? God, I'm jealous. I really want to see it. Amazing. Yeah
5:02
I'll just say that. Just say it. Just say it. Just say it. Just say it. Just say it. Just say it. Just say it
5:06
That's nice, isn't it? I like this. It a little bit Victorian passing messages back and forth Do you want me to pass one back next time you speak to Margot She knows how proud I am of her It amazing She came on in the audition process for Wolf of Wall Street
5:21
and I said, this person's going to have an incredible career. But again
5:25
what she did with that opportunity and the type of artistry that she's put up on screen
5:31
the choices that she's made, it's absolutely incredible. She's fantastic. I love that
5:38
There are so many incredible performances in this film. A real standout for me, though
5:43
Tiana Taylor and Sean Penn, absolutely incredible. I mean, the way Sean's able to transform
5:48
almost into another creature, the way he just moves his face. What is it like performing somebody
5:52
who's absolutely nailing it? Does it make you in some way feel like you have to up your game
5:56
or do you just sort of stand back and admire? I only had one scene with Sean
6:00
but I mean, I think both of us have, he's been highly influential to both of us
6:06
I've heard him say that too. He's, you know, one of the great actors of his time
6:11
And to have him step into this role, I knew he was going to bring something so interesting, so unique
6:19
What surprised me watching the movie is, you know, you have a setup of a villain
6:24
The guy's, you know, his name is Lockjaw. He's not to give away too much about the character, but he brought a humanity
6:31
and, I don't know, this flawed sort of humanity where you almost feel sorry for him at the end of the day
6:38
I knew he would bring another layer that wasn't a typical choice for a villain
6:42
just because he's dangerous. He's dangerous, funny. Gents, I could talk to you all day
6:48
It's been an absolute pleasure. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you
