I haven't told the story yet and so I will choose here to tell it
0:03
He turned pale. Oh, stop. And just turned around and walked off
0:07
He didn't say anything else. Martin Scorsese was at our table read and it was terrifying because there was an audience of Apple executives
0:14
And then all of a sudden they wheeled in the biggest TV you've ever seen. I don't like being jump scare
0:20
I don't. Yeah. I know. The ring the first time I saw that
0:23
Oh my goodness. I remember the ring. I was unhappy with that and literally came home and our refrigerator was leaking
0:29
And I was like, no, no, not cool. Amy Adams, welcome, welcome, welcome back to Heart
0:36
How are you, my lovely? I'm really well. Thank you. Thanks for having me. Oh, it is a pleasure
0:40
Can I just say, personally, I'm very excited to chat to you
0:44
about your brand new Apple TV Plus series. And the reason why is because Cape Fear has been a favorite of mine
0:51
A favorite. What you've done, I think, is just brilliant. Thank you
0:56
The way you've played your character as well. Thank you. outstanding now let's just say turning it into a series um a lot of fans as well would have been
1:04
like is that gonna work is it is it it really has and i'm gonna call it now i think that you're
1:09
about to drop the best show of the year oh that's thank you so much that's amazing no it was so
1:14
much fun to make and like you i was so impressed with the reimagining because it allowed us to open
1:19
it up we weren't really doing any version that you've seen before so it's great because people
1:26
can come to it with fresh eyes. What was your first thoughts when you actually looked at the script
1:31
I really loved it. I loved the moral ambiguity of my character
1:36
and sort of understanding that there were secrets and a lot to peel back
1:42
And then also knowing Javier was going to be Max Cady and his ideas were so great to have the same
1:48
You don't know who to cheer for necessarily. And he's so charming, but clearly menacing
1:53
He is a menace, but he also has this warmth and charm to him that's very seductive
2:00
So it's fun to play with. What do you think are the first few words that people are going to say
2:05
or will be thinking of and feeling when they see this series? Oh, tense and addictive, maybe
2:15
I mean, watching Javier, that's what I can think, yeah. I'm going to chuck one at you
2:19
I'm going to say dread. Dread. You know when you get that feeling in your stomach
2:23
All of a sudden I couldn't think of any words. I'm like a jet lag, I'm like tense. I can only think of the word tense
2:28
That the only word in my mind Yes Do you know what That the exact feeling that I got when I saw that very first episode It was it really intense And it that feeling where my heart sank
2:41
And I was like, ooh. Yeah. And that's what I think people are going to get. I hope so
2:45
I hope they enjoy it. Yeah. Oh, they will. Now, you can tell right away that this series
2:49
it has been made with not only a lot of love, it's attention to detail and a lot of care
2:54
Now, as well as yourself, having Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg as executive producers
2:59
Absolutely. How was it working with that combination? Because I mean, I would say that's terrifying
3:05
Yes, especially for a people pleaser. You know, those are two giants
3:10
You definitely want to be showing up with a lot of ideas and your best work
3:15
But their investment just gave me so much faith in sort of our vision
3:19
because I knew that they would be caretaking it. Yeah. So even though I was nervous, it also gave me a peace of mind
3:25
that we were going to be doing something at the highest level. do you think there's a lot more of a um i'd say pressure when you you're taking something that's
3:34
been such a huge cult classic and then you're turning it into almost like something new at
3:39
least personally for myself we were doing something new like i i didn't fear i would be compared to
3:45
nick nolte in any way you know so i think i wonder if for javier that pressure was different and i
3:51
think he's spoken to that that yeah he definitely wanted to uh and it was on paper that there was
3:57
something so different than what Robert De Niro did but I'm sure he had that in mind when approaching
4:01
the character and and he came to it with such a totally different point of view and a different
4:06
take on it that it's iconic in its own way yeah I'm sure there was pressure for him I can only
4:12
imagine yeah yeah in fact did uh Nick or De Niro did they actually get in touch with you over this
4:16
whole process no no I haven't spoken to any of them I would love to I would love to oh I think
4:22
they'll be in touch I think they will and Nolte's gonna be like hey lady yeah yeah it was one it
4:32
was wonderful but of course Jessica Lange I always yes yeah thought of her because I love that sort
4:36
of steel Magnolia that's yes yes gritty strong female character oh yeah she's powerful yeah
4:44
complicated yes yes so yes and with feedback from martin and steam did you have any like
4:51
during or before the film well martin scorsese was at our table read and it was terrifying because
4:57
um we were you know it's a nerve-wracking experience anyway because you get around a
5:02
table and you saying the words out loud for the first time and there was an audience of apple executives and i mean maybe 40 people just watching anyway and then all of a sudden they wheeled in this television like the biggest tv you ever seen and Martin Scorsese
5:17
popped up and he's like hey guys and he's there but he meant it as such to be supportive like yeah
5:22
I'm here I'm gonna watch the table read I'm cheering for like I'm so supportive and of course
5:26
I was just like, oh, Lord. I haven't been that nervous in a long time
5:35
But someone as amazing as you, you forget that you still get nervous as well
5:39
And you've done so many big things. I get nervous all the time. Wow, and you wouldn't think it
5:43
Yeah, definitely. Wow. I do. I love that. Now, can we talk about your accent
5:49
So, your character, Anna Bowden. Lovely southern accent. Now, I know that you did voices as well on the TV show King of the Hill
5:57
Oh, yes, I did. Oh, my gosh, that's a blast from the past. There we go. I'm here to help, guys
6:01
I was a utility voice. Yeah. Now, I heard that your daughter laughs when your accent slips out at home
6:08
Yes. Well, it's us at home and it more is out in public. Like if, let's say, I step out the elevator and don't make space for somebody
6:18
I apologize, but typically with a southern accent, and I'm not sure why
6:22
Yeah. or i say thank you so it's usually uh when i'm efforting to be polite it will come out southern
6:29
yeah wow yeah i don't know why i don't know it just comes that comes and goes yeah yeah yeah
6:37
exactly now with horror it's such a a huge huge genre what would you say has been like your top
6:45
two for you horrors that have actually really freaked you out something that when you've turned
6:50
it off you've gone oh oh unpleasant um well i go back to childhood because i think about the exorcist
6:57
yeah that was a big one i think i'm just i'm doing stream of consciousness so like the ring
7:02
the first time i saw that oh my goodness i remember the ring i was unhappy with that and
7:06
literally came home and our refrigerator was leaking and i was like no no not cool i don't
7:11
like i don't go to haunted houses i don't like being jump scare i don't yeah i i know yeah no
7:19
my daughter my husband love them and they go see everything they've seen back room and obsession
7:24
and i will see them eventually but like not in a big theater and i remember i saw blair witch
7:29
i was like no i think that was actually one of my first blair witch really that really freaked me
7:35
out the way it was filmed because i'd never seen anything like that yeah and it was the way do you
7:40
remember where they would stand in the corner of the room and you calling out someone name and they were in the witch house like literally just facing the wall and it freaked me out nothing happened suspense it suspense it what you don see sometimes yes yeah rather than having something
7:53
like just come jumping out absolutely but even though that does scare me as well yeah yeah i
7:59
get i could like silence of the lambs even though it's not hard like chilling yes chilling yeah Yeah
8:05
Now we do do a thing on the show and it's called Please Stop Asking Me
8:10
Oh. So now these are not necessarily bad questions. These can be good or bad
8:15
It's a little bit of a tongue in cheek. Okay. And it's things like Ryan Gosling told us
8:18
can you please stop asking if he's Ryan Reynolds. Apparently it happens all the time
8:23
Oh, okay. Apparently it does. I can do one similar and then I have a really good story attached to it
8:27
Go, go, go, go, go. Stop congratulating me on Confessions of a Shopaholic
8:32
but that doesn't really bother me it really doesn't it sounds like it bothers me
8:38
i i haven't told the story yet and so i will choose here to tell it i was at a
8:42
friend's birthday party recently and this gentleman came up to me and said
8:46
hi and i was like hi how are you i'm amy he's like you don't remember me or i didn't say i'm
8:51
amy i said hi it's nice to meet you and he said you don't remember me i said well what uh no can
8:57
you put it in context I'm so sorry yeah he was like context I you sat at a table in my restaurant
9:03
with Stella McCartney we talked for hours and I in my head of course was like I mean I know
9:09
I know no no it wasn't me and I said do you think I'm Isla Fisher oh stop he turned pale
9:17
and just turned around and walked off he didn't say anything else and I'm like he thought I was
9:23
isla fisher oh my goodness yes so he thought isla had just completely spaced the conversation but
9:29
it's not the first time it's happened and really yeah oh yeah i know it happens to her a lot as well
9:34
but it actually doesn't bother me no it doesn't bother me so that's not a good one i just it was
9:40
a nice segue into the story but that's a brilliant story and you know what's even funny is the fact
9:44
that he couldn't um just apologize and just go oh i'm so sorry it was the fact that you're so
9:49
embarrassed, I've got to get out of this situation. He just walked away. I mean, I
9:53
laughed. Of course you did, yeah. He literally walked away. So, if he's listening
9:59
it's all good. It's all good. All good, hun. Amy Adams, can I just say, it's such a pleasure
10:05
to meet you. You've been amazing. Thank you. And congratulations for Cape Fear. This is going to blow people's minds
10:11
Thank you. I appreciate it. Thank you
