First as the Kievan Rus and the Rus Principalities, but then also as the Grand Duchy of Moscow, the Tsardom of Russia, the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union (USSR) and the Russian Federation. The argument put forth by some is that, throughout history, Russia's military victories have been fueled mostly by their virtually infinite manpower and their ability to exhaust their oponents'. Stating that most times, when facing a strong opponent without this strategy as a possibility, they lost. Statistically this is not correct, Russia, throughout its various forms throughout time, has been victorious in over 70% of all conflicts fought. However, there are some historical defeats that tend to be quite odd and which demonstrate strategic issues in Russia's military strategies. Here we go through a few possible examples of that, such as the Mongol Invasion of 1223, the Livonian War in the Baltic of 1558, the Khivan Campaign of 1717 in Central Asia, the Russo-Japanese War of 1905, World War 1 in 1914-17, the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, or the First Chechen War of 1994. All of these provide us with a little bit of context as to why Russia lost those wars, and perhaps allow us to draw some conclusions into modern times.
