Why do some countries, like Portugal, speak a single language, while an island like New Guinea hosts over 1,000? In this video we take a deep dive into the world’s most linguistically diverse region, we analyze the "others" category of human speech: the Papuan languages. From languages spoken by only a few hundred people to isolates that share no connection with any other tongue on Earth, being isolates, we break down the 60+ language families that have survived in almost total isolation for 40,000 years. Is it just the mountains and jungles, or is there a deeper social reason for this "Tower of Babel" reality?
