Time of Premier League predictions with the excellent Clive Allen
0:04
Clive, I thought we had quite a good week last week, you know? I think it was quite interesting. We did all right
0:09
We did. I think a lot of the scores were very close and we seemed to get them the right way round
0:14
So home wins and away results. It was very, it was a good, it was an informed week, I felt
0:20
It was. And we both predicted that Fulham were going to beat Liverpool, didn't we? We absolutely did that
0:25
Yeah. Cool. Okay. Okay, let's have a look at this week then
0:30
Some more really good fixtures. We start with the early one on Saturday
0:34
So it's Manchester City. You never know really what you're going to get there
0:38
So the sixth at the moment. They obviously want this Champions League place
0:41
They've got to get this Champions League place against Crystal Palace, who 11th and 43 points at the moment
0:50
I'm going to go straight in. I'm going for a Man City win. I'm going to say 2-1 because it's at the Etihad
0:55
What do you make of the game? Yeah, it's a game I'm going to be at actually Saturday
0:59
I'm looking forward to this. Obviously, two of my old clubs, potentially an FA Cup final as well
1:05
Yeah, cool. The FA Cup final is. So, but the importance is the Premier League
1:10
and it's almost unthinkable, isn't it, that City are fighting for a Champions League place
1:15
I think it's really interesting that, obviously, with the Champions League results this week
1:20
that the fifth place is now available for Champions League place come next season
1:25
so it sort of eases it but there's still a great fight
1:30
for those Champions League places I think Palace have been in good form
1:34
I think under Oliver Glasner they've started to find some consistency so I think this is a tricky game for City
1:41
but I do think they're going to win it but only just 2-1 for me
1:45
2-1 City You know what? This is the first time I've done this
1:49
and although I said 2-1 City I'm actually now going to reverse my prediction
1:54
for some reason, and I'm going to say 2-1 Palace. Is it craziness
2:00
No, it's not. Not this season. Not the way Palace have played
2:05
And certainly not the way City have defended, which I think has been their Achilles heel
2:10
has been their problem. Never been a problem scoring goals for City. But defensively, they are vulnerable
2:16
And Palace could be a team that could take advantage of that. Right. I'll put a line through that
2:20
2-1 Palace for me. 2-1 Man City for you. write Brighton versus Leicester
2:26
Now, there's nailed on games. There's nailed on games. We probably would have said this
2:30
about Liverpool last week. So you've got Leicester, they lose seven on the bounce
2:36
Then they play Spurs. Let's not mention what happened there. And then go and lose eight on the bounce
2:41
When it comes to playing at home, obviously they're away at Brighton, but they're playing at home
2:45
They haven't scored a goal in eight. I mean, it's just a disaster at Leicester
2:52
Agreed. surely there's no way they're going to get anything out of Brighton
2:56
19th on 17 points. And at the moment, they just can't buy a point
3:00
Brighton are ninth. Surely this is going to be just how many goals, isn't it, Clive
3:06
Because I can't see Lennon scoring. And I think Brighton are going to score three at least. I agree that it will be a Brighton victory
3:13
So often, I cannot call Brighton's results. I think they've done very well
3:18
I think they're still in with the chance of European football, not necessarily Champions League, but European football
3:25
So I'm going to go Brighton 2, Leicester 0. Right, so you're being quite generous to Leicester
3:31
I'm sorry, Leicester fans, but I think everybody's feeling the same way. Rue van Nistelrooy, I mean, he's there, his manager
3:38
and obviously the record is not good. And obviously he was there at Manchester United just before that
3:46
What goes on now? because he must be thinking now long-term and thinking what's the next job going to be
3:54
because it looks like they're going to go down. If they do, the chances are that he's not going to stick around
3:59
What would you do as a manager if you were in that situation? Well, you have to stick to your beliefs
4:03
and I'm sure he's thinking no different to the way that he did instructing and working with the Manchester United players
4:10
He's come to Leicester, he's looked at the players he's got, he's tried to find a way for that Leicester team to play
4:15
in the way that he wants. So you're trying to get the best out of them. But it is just not working
4:20
And obviously, you know, Monday night's game against Newcastle was pretty much a disaster
4:25
It was all over within a short space of time. And I think defensively, there has to be a reaction from Leicester defensively
4:33
They've got to try and stop conceding goals at least. They carry very little threat on the front line at the moment
4:39
Not creating too much, but have to be more resilient defensively. So yeah I be surprised if Roode there next season in the championship Yeah OK well Forrest So there the story I mean the amazing thing is that we would have expected I think everybody would have been and even Forrest fans
4:57
that they'd be the ones that'd be fighting relegation this year. And it's completely turned on its head
5:02
I mean, they're third. They're still getting wins. So they're 57 points
5:07
You've got Everton who, you know, things have turned around for Everton as well
5:11
They're 15th. But what do you think for this? Because this is at Forrest
5:17
Yeah, I think... And they don't sit on it up, do they? No, David Moyes has done a brilliant job at Everton
5:22
They're safe now. There's no doubt about that for me. He's done the job that he was brought in for
5:28
Nuno's doing an incredible job at Notts Forest. I've got to say, it's a breath of fresh air
5:33
the way they're playing. They're defending magnificently, Forest. Carry an unbelievable threat on the counter with pace
5:41
I'm going to go for Forest just to squeak this one, 1-0, because I think they could finish third
5:47
I really do. I think the season they've had, the way they're getting their results
5:52
I see Forrest finishing third, qualifying for the Champions League and beating Everton 1-0
5:58
It's like going back to the old days. You know, we've got Aston Villa playing in the Champions League and it looks like Forrest will play in the Champions League next year
6:05
I mean, it's just beyond a dream for everybody. But then again, I guess this is
6:08
it's almost like the old Brian Clough days when they went up from the old second division
6:12
then became this powerhouse for a few years. Absolutely. I think people were looking at it not too long ago
6:20
about the way they amassed so many players, how it was going to work, who was going to really sort out
6:26
what was a massive squad of players. Yeah, that's right. I think you have to give Nuno a great deal of credit
6:33
for the way he's handled it and the way he's got this Forrest team working
6:38
Right, I'm going to say Forrest winners, so I'm going to say 2-1 Forrest, and you say 1-0, right
6:41
Right, next one, Southampton versus Villa. Southampton, of course, have gone now after the loss at Spurs
6:51
What do you do in a situation like that? What are you playing for? Are you just playing for yourself and thinking
6:56
well, maybe I can get a move out of this? Or it's all the old cliches about playing for pride and what have you
7:03
But if you're a Southampton fan, what are you thinking? It's been a terrible season
7:10
Obviously, I was at Spurs to see them defeated and relegated last weekend
7:17
And I have to say, they were a poor Premier League team that I've seen for such a long, long time
7:25
I just couldn't understand the way they came into the game, tried to defend the situation when they had to win to try to stay up
7:32
I thought it was very disappointing. And if I'd have been a Southampton supporter on the day
7:37
would have been pretty disappointed with the way they went about it. Listen, it's done. They're finished
7:43
The pressure's off. Players will be playing. You're right, be playing for themselves in respect of, you know
7:50
whether it's leaving the club, whether I can establish myself in the squad for the championship campaign next season
7:58
Villa off the back of a, you know, disappointing result against PSG
8:01
Really tough game. Absolutely. First class, high quality game against PSG. how the effects that maybe they will have
8:12
from what was a game of real high intensity. I'm sure Unai Emery will change that at Villa side up
8:20
But I see they're still striving. If they don't win the Champions League
8:24
they want to qualify it for next season again. So I see it being a Salampton nil, Aston Villa 2
8:30
Right. I'm going to give them one more. I'm going to say three, but maybe I'm thinking two and a half
8:34
because after the game in the week, before we move on in the Premier League
8:41
do Aston Villa still stand a chance? Because after what we saw, and PSG was so good
8:46
and the weird thing is when you lose Mbappe and when you lose Messi and all these big names
8:55
they seem better now to me without those players because they're playing now as a team
9:01
and now they've suddenly started to work. It's going to be really tough for Villa to come back from this
9:06
although, of course, it's going to be a Villa Park. It is against this PSG side because of the, I think, the young legs
9:13
the energy that Luis Enrique has instilled in this team, the ability they have as well
9:19
But for me, the biggest thing is there's a real team spirit there, the group, the way they work for one another
9:25
and the quality they have when they're on the ball. So I thought if it had stayed 2-1, Villa had a chance
9:32
but 3-1 is going to be just I think too much listen
9:36
we've seen some extraordinary Champions League comebacks and this would have to be one of the best if Villa are going to progress well it could be one of the best And the other one is the next game and this is Arsenal
9:49
Now, Arsenal, of course, I mean, what? And Declan Rice, and what can you say about the free kicks
9:54
and the performance, and it was perfect. 3-0 against Real Madrid. I know we're going to do Premier League, but again
10:01
see, that's the funny thing about Real Madrid. And no matter who plays for them, and going back over the years
10:07
they're always capable. So I don't really think that although if you're an Arsenal fan, you're going to be very happy, you're not truly going to believe until maybe you score first
10:19
Because if Real Madrid get an early goal, it is possible, isn't it
10:23
It really is possible that Real Madrid can actually go through. Paul, it's possible. And if anyone can do it, Real Madrid can do it
10:29
It's as if players who go there have to have that in their DNA, that they can turn what look like impossible results around
10:38
Listen, I thought Arsenal were fantastic. I thought the atmosphere was incredible. It was electric
10:45
The whole thing, the whole place. And I think the supporters played a massive part
10:51
in lifting that team to almost another level. And you have to be at the highest level to play Real Madrid
10:56
and get a result. The free kicks from Declan Rice were just incredible
11:02
Absolutely amazing. They were perfect. Perfect free kicks. that Courtois could get nowhere near
11:09
So off the back of that feel-good factor, I see Arsenal winning 2-0 against Brentford
11:16
I've got Brentford 6-0 to win that one. So we'll... 3-1. 3-1
11:22
I would say 3-1, but that's the game, isn't it? I mean, they're OK
11:28
The league... OK, Liverpool slipped up. It's done. And Liverpool have won the title
11:33
There's no question that's going to happen. So, Arsenal, what do you do if, you know
11:37
what are you thinking then if you're Arteta? You're just going to think, well, it's all about Real Madrid now
11:43
because that is the most important game of the season for them, isn't it, now? Absolutely
11:48
And the semi-finals, potential semi-finals of the Champions League. The whole club is buzzing because of their Champions League run
11:55
because of the position they've got themselves into. So, every game, although they're still going to try and chase down Liverpool
12:01
every game is important. Players want to be playing in that second leg next week
12:05
Players want to be playing in the semi-final should they qualify, which I think they will
12:09
So the whole place, right to the end of the season now, they're going to have..
12:14
The manager's going to be demanding and the players are going to have to perform
12:18
It's going to be a hell of a game. Right, let's move on to Sunday. Chelsea against Ipswich
12:24
So, I mean, it's looking like... Well, of course, Southampton are down
12:27
and then Leicester and probably Ipswich because Wolves seem to be pulling away
12:32
It's a big gap now. So Chelsea at home. Chelsea have a funny old season
12:37
And then they're fourth. You know, one minute they're great. The next minute it's like a disaster
12:41
and everybody wants the manager out and let's get rid of the board. And now they're in the Champions League
12:47
qualifying positions on 53 points. It is, there's some strange stuff going on this season
12:52
but can't see much further than a Chelsea win, can you? No, I think Ibschurch will make it difficult
12:58
I think Kieran McKenna's kept his team going. And the Wolves result was a massive blow
13:03
There's no doubt about that, getting beat at home to Wolves. It was a game that they could ill afford to lose
13:09
I think this is a must-win game for Chelsea on 53 points, as you say
13:13
But Newcastle on their coattails now. They've come level with them after their victory against Leicester
13:19
So fourth and fifth place at the moment are on 53 points
13:26
So must-win game for Chelsea. I don't think it'll be easy, but I'm going Chelsea 2, it's which one
13:32
Right, I'm going to go 2-0. I'm going to say Chelsea 2, it's which one. Right, Liverpool then against West Ham
13:37
Liverpool, of course, top. Should be a parade. I mean, this is the interesting thing
13:42
Mo Salah, they're talking about Mo Salah and this new deal, a 45 million quid deal
13:47
I think it was always pretty much certain that he was going to sign
13:51
I didn't think he wasn't going to. Van Dijk as well. but then with Trent looks like it's going to be Real Madrid for him
13:59
Has this all been timed about altogether? Because I hear rumours that maybe it was timed
14:05
so you would get the Trent announcement would be at the same time as the other two
14:10
saying that they are going to stick around because you've got to keep supporters happy
14:13
and the way some of them are responding to Trent has not been too good. Yeah, exactly
14:18
And I think sometimes it happens at all clubs where there's players and transfers of free agencies coming up
14:26
But Liverpool wouldn't be wanting to lose all three of those players
14:30
Ideally they probably want to keep all three especially as they are going to be the Premier League champions But Trent can really call the shots because of his contractual situation
14:42
But I see Van Dijk and Salah so important to Liverpool. And I think the Liverpool supporters
14:50
will be delighted if they secure their signatures, which I'm sure they will. How do you replace
14:54
Mo Salah's goals? You can't go and buy a replacement for Mo Salah. So Liverpool
15:01
need to secure that. Captain Van Dijk has been fabulous again this season
15:06
He's in the heart of that defence. I think he has a great rapport with the manager
15:11
and I think that they know how important it is to keep him as well
15:15
So I'm going to go Liverpool to put it right in respect of defeat to Fulham
15:21
but marching on to the Premier League Championship, I'm going to go Liverpool 3-0 West Ham
15:26
3-0. Right, I'm going to go... Oh, it's... Yeah, he's at Anfield. I'm going to stick with 2-0
15:31
I'm going to go with 2-0 for that. Right, Wolverhampton Wanderers then
15:35
32 points, they're in 17th. Playing Spurs at Molyneux. Spurs are 14th
15:43
I've got to tell you, Clive, I don't fancy this one. Spurs are 37 points
15:48
Wolves could catch Spurs up, let's be honest here, because if they get three points, then it's within two
15:54
Spurs have still got some very difficult games to come. And, of course, with the Europa League as well
16:01
I hate to say it, it's going to be another one of those things we're going to have to whisper. But I'm going to go, because I think last time I predicted Spurs to lose
16:08
they did. And I don't want to be the kiss of death, but I'm going Wolves 2, Spurs 1
16:13
And I know you're not going to do that, so you can level it up with me. I'm not going 2-1, but I'm going 1-0 Wolves
16:19
Oh, you're. I think off the back of the European game. This is your first ever prediction of a Spurs loss
16:26
You know that, don't you? Yeah. I think Wolves... You know what you're doing tonight. I know what I'm doing
16:31
One more victory for Wolves. I think they're safe. Certainly, none of those three below them will catch them
16:39
There's a real feel-good factor about the way Wolves are playing, the results they're achieving
16:45
And Spurs still indifferent. That really is the way I've described their season
16:49
They've been indifferent. There's no consistency. So, I'm going to go Wolves to squeak it
16:54
1-0. Wolves 1, Spurs 0. Don't tell anyone. Andrew Postacoglu, okay, we'll keep this between us
17:00
I know Andrew Postacoglu's been mulling about the press and saying that he doesn't get Spurs
17:04
I mean, he does from us, but we've still got to be honest. When the team's not doing well
17:09
and you've got a Tottenham team which is down in 16th last week and then just up to 14th, it's not good enough
17:15
So you've got to expect criticism, surely. Cool, 16 defeats, 16 Premier League defeats
17:23
I think that says it all. That is something that is almost unthinkable
17:27
for Tottenham Hotspur in this Premier League campaign. So, yeah, there's a lot to put right
17:36
Hopefully, we can still finish the season in a spectacular way. Everything's in the Europa League basket now
17:44
Yeah, OK. And finally, last game, that match for Newcastle, who are still flying high, aren't they
17:51
Let's be honest, since that League Cup win, the Carabao Cup. The partying hasn't stopped, has it
17:56
It really hasn't. And it's not like there's no hangover either by the look of things
18:00
So 53 points. They're in fifth, heading for that Champions League. I mean, what
18:05
I mean, Eddie Howe is going to get a statue, isn't he? If they qualify for the Champions League and with a trophy as well
18:11
I mean, what more can you want? And Manchester United, languishing, still 13th
18:18
And also Europa League as well, of course. They played on Thursday
18:23
So there are 38 points. It's at St. James' Park. I think we're both going to predict
18:28
I think you are as well, going to predict a Newcastle win. I'm going to say 3-1. Newcastle, what about you
18:34
I'm going to go 1-0 Newcastle. I think it'll be difficult. I think Man United
18:37
to make it difficult for Newcastle. I think you're right. Eddie Howe's done a brilliant job
18:43
The League Cup victory has completely galvanised that club. You know, they've been waiting so long
18:49
They've won a trophy. But what that trophy has done has just given them so much energy
18:54
so much impetus. And I think they're going to finish the season strong. I think they'll beat
18:58
Manchester United 1-0. But I'll say now it will be a Tottenham
19:02
Man United, Europa Cup final. OK. And if, you know, we don't go that way
19:09
we will make sure there is no record of you saying that whatsoever. OK. We'll see
19:14
Clive, have a great weekend. And you, Paul. Thank you
