‘Inevitable that he’s got to go!’ Labour rebel predicts fate of Keir Starmer following Lord Mandelson fiasco

I'm delighted now to be joined by my next guest, the former Labour Party MP, now suspended, Carl Turner

Carl, it's a pleasure to have your company. It sincerely is. Carl, yesterday you said in the chamber that trust in the Prime Minister is diminishing over this entire sorry saga

Carl Turner, having what you've seen today, is your position even more so now

Well, it is, Martin. It got worse for the Prime Minister today

I don't think it was catastrophic in the sense that the PM will be resigning imminently

but I thought the evidence that Ollie Robbins gave to the select committee

was clearly a man of real integrity. Somebody who was brought in to do a job

and sat for doing the very job that he was brought in to do, effectively

And he was under incredible intense pressure from the back room of number 10

the Prime Minister's private office, and that evidence looked very sincere to me, I've got to tell you

But does it mean the Prime Minister's going any time soon? I doubt it, probably, because the reality is, as Chris has just said

who's going to replace him? And indeed, we've got the local elections coming up in, what, 15, 16 days from now

Members of Parliament will want to get beyond them to see how the election affects their possibility of being re in three years if that when the election comes Carl Turner it been telling today there are only 25 Labour parliamentarians in chamber

supporting the Prime Minister. That's 6% of the total set. 6% were prepared today to stand by their man

Are you surprised about that? And in your opinion, is this... Does he have the feelings of the final days of Boris Johnson

the end of days? I don't think it's as bad as that, Martin

and I say it for this reason. I don't think it's become an issue on the doorstep yet

That's the truth. I think when we had the party against your s

I think everybody felt affected. Everybody had a grandmother who couldn't visit

or somebody in hospital they were unable to see, and they felt like Boris Johnson was taking the mickey out of them

when, in fact, they were having to comply with rules that he didn't need to comply with

I don't think it's quite that. But I think it has an ability to get there, and I'll tell you for a while

I think it's drip, drip, drip. I think as more and more revelations come out

and the Prime Minister is compromised yet further by some of the stuff that's bound to be unearthed

I think that's when it becomes inevitable that the PM's got to go. And it troubles me because I'm a supporter of Keir Starmer

He was a pal of mine. I think he still might be a pal of mine, Although we had a fallout on policy on the jury trial containment which I think by the way is a ludicrous idea And I lost the whip as a result of that But this is where we find ourselves I afraid to tell you this was an act of the biggest political self I could ever imagine

It's catastrophic in the sense that this man didn't deserve to lose his job

and it appears to the public, I think, that the PM will throw anybody under the bus

apart from taking responsibility himself, and that's troubling. And, Carl Turner, isn't that the point

There's always a fall guy, be it yourself, be it Sir Audie Robbins

and here's a Prime Minister that never seems to carry the can, who always blames other people and chucks a body under the bus

Well, it looks a bit like that, doesn't it? And I think a lot of it is actually down to the fact

that he lacks political judgment, and that's why he's been over-reliant on what is sometimes crap advice

I think some of the advice from Morgan Maxweeney was often poor advice

I think sometimes it was shocking advice, and I used to tell the PM directly to his face

this is bad advice. Don't take bad advice. The Andy Burnham blocking

Don't block Andy Burnham. Lots of times there was examples where he's been advised

politically it was bad advice, and he just ignored it. So I think I'm afraid to say, you know

this is yet another mistake from the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, and I think it will, in the end, get him

Yesterday the forensic leader of the opposition was reduced to a laughingstock in the House of Commons Let take a look I know many members across the House

how does it make you feel today to see your Prime Minister reduced to a national laughingstock

Well, I was in the chamber for that and it didn't feel nice, Martin

As I say, Kyrgyzstan was a pal of mine and we were friends

and it did feel awkward. I mean, the reality is, though, we came into power

promising to be earlier than that. we weren't going to be incompetent and chaotic

and we were going to be, you know, a competent government delivering policy for the British public

And unfortunately, the policy we have managed to deliver has been overshadowed by the shenanigans, the ups and downs

the marching MPs up hills and back down them again, the U-turns, the going round in circles

We never know where we are. It's been chaotic. and I'll tell you now, Labour MPs are terribly cheesed off

by the chaos that's been created in the last sort of 12 months
