The Chibi News Daily Reflection

Hi, I'm Mark and I'm a vicar in the Church of England in the Diocese of York

If you've watched any of the many, many, many period dramas put out over the last few years
0:16
there'll be a few things you've noticed. The great costumes, the improbable accents
0:21
and the clear distinction between those important people upstairs and the lesser people, the servants downstairs
0:27
These days, our relationship between those we serve and those people who serve us is less clear-cut
0:32
But instinctively, we all know where we want to be. We want to be the upstairs people
0:36
We don't want to be those downstairs. We want to be the ones who are served. And yet, our heroes
0:43
especially the ones we commemorate and remember at this time of year, are the ones who do the opposite
0:49
Think of the lady who gives up her freedoms to ensure the freedom of others. the soldier who lays down his life in service to save his friends
0:58
This is the model Jesus teaches. He says this about himself. Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served
1:05
but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Maybe this is why people see such virtue in service
1:12
especially service that leads to the ultimate sacrifice. For me, that supreme example helps me as I seek to serve others
