0:00
why are travelers saying they won't
0:03
cruise lovers some unexpected and rather
0:07
reasons beyond the obvious i'm gary
0:09
bembridge this is tips for travis i've
0:12
and finding out why people don't want to
0:16
i had expected some very obvious answers
0:18
but i've uncovered some really
0:20
and unexpected reasons which i want to
0:22
share with you as cruisers have
0:24
started up in europe the demand has not
0:27
been as great as perhaps had been
0:30
ships are only allowed to sell between
0:32
60 and 70 percent full
0:34
however all the reports seem to suggest
0:36
that they are not even able to fill
0:38
those levels and in fact just in the
0:40
last couple of days that i'm recording
0:42
msc cruisers have postponed bringing
0:45
back into service because they are
0:47
seeing falling demand
0:48
and increased cancellation so what
0:50
exactly is going on why
0:52
are people saying they don't want to
0:55
are extremely interesting and i think
0:57
show a lot of the challenges that the
0:58
cruise lines and the cruise industry
1:00
are going to have to address and wrestle
1:02
with if they really want to get cruising
1:03
back and running so let's take a look
1:05
at the reasons that cruisers are saying
1:07
they do not want to cruise
1:09
first of all the biggest and most
1:13
cruising audience is those people that i
1:16
guess would classify as seniors
1:18
so people who in their 50s 60s 70s and
1:21
they are an enormous and extremely
1:23
important part of cruising and for many
1:26
they are absolutely key to the success
1:28
of those cruise lines
1:29
what i'm seeing in all the comments that
1:32
i get and asking people now bear in mind
1:34
most of you who watch my videos tend to
1:36
be in that sort of age group
1:38
and what they're telling me is they
1:41
and they certainly don't want to go
1:42
cruising until one of two things happens
1:45
either the whole pandemic passes by and
1:49
or secondly what most people see is more
1:52
is a vaccine available and it's out and
1:55
so certainly the older audience which of
1:56
course are the higher risk
1:58
category are saying they do not want to
2:00
go traveling internationally and
2:02
certainly do not want to go cruising
2:04
until there is a vaccine in place so
2:06
this is a massive big challenge for the
2:08
because that is a really phenomenally
2:10
big part of the cruising audience
2:13
and the numbers on border ship so that
2:15
is certainly one big reason that i'm
2:18
the second thing which i had not really
2:20
expected is again amongst
2:22
people who are big lovers of cruising
2:25
and go cruising very frequently or being
2:27
on cruises and want to go again
2:28
what those cruisers are saying is the
2:30
reason they're not keen on cruising
2:32
is not because they don't love cruising
2:34
is because the cruising experience
2:36
is not what they love and they don't
2:38
want to hand over many thousands
2:40
of dollars to go on a cruise vacation
2:42
for an experience based on what they're
2:44
seeing the protocols are likely to be
2:45
so as they look at cruisers starting up
2:47
they're seeing a couple of things that
2:48
they just don't want to pay
2:50
to go on vacation to do so for example
2:52
many of the cruise lines
2:53
have masks involved in some way or other
2:56
with the check-in process
2:57
when you're indoors in busy spaces when
3:00
or out on excursions a lot of people
3:02
saying i don't want to pay to go
3:04
on vacation and have to wear a mask i'd
3:05
rather wait until that's gone
3:07
they're also saying that they have some
3:09
reservations based on their beliefs
3:11
around the testing protocol so there's
3:13
different screening taking place where
3:15
some cruise lines for example msc
3:17
and some of the cruise lines require
3:18
covert 19 tests before you board
3:21
or certainly certificates some of them
3:22
are saying i don't want to go through
3:23
that whole testing process i'd rather
3:26
it's safe for me to go without the whole
3:28
testing process one of the other things
3:29
that's happening on cruises
3:30
is temperature checking at least once a
3:34
part of the process a lot of people
3:35
saying i don't want to go on vacation
3:36
where i'm constantly reminded that this
3:38
virus thing is going on
3:39
having my temperature checked every day
3:41
or potentially when i go off the street
3:42
when i get back on the ship when i go to
3:44
dining and a lot of travelers and
3:46
cruisers saying i just don't want to do
3:48
also really fundamentally is what
3:49
they're saying is some of the really big
3:51
things that they like about cruising
3:52
are being obliterated or certainly
3:54
reduced based on the protocols
3:56
allowing them to sell so for example
3:58
social distancing means
4:00
things like you have to book to go into
4:03
certain venues or use
4:04
the gym or use the swimming pool or have
4:08
access to some of the shows
4:10
are restricted and you have to book
4:12
people saying i don't want to go on
4:13
vacation have to worry about booking
4:15
little thing that i do also social
4:17
distancing often means that you have to
4:19
only dine for example
4:20
and interact in those kind of social
4:22
occasions only with the people you're
4:23
traveling with a lot of people go on
4:25
because they like to interact meet lots
4:27
of people sit at different
4:28
people's tables and meet loads of people
4:32
and what they're worried about is with
4:33
many of these protocols that are being
4:36
that's going to be wiped out the way and
4:37
that's one of the key reasons they go
4:39
that's especially important for solo
4:41
travelers because they're saying
4:42
they go solo traveling and they want to
4:44
go on a cruise because they can meet
4:46
loads and loads of people another key
4:48
thing that's putting a lot of people off
4:50
is if there is a requirement which is
4:52
certainly the case on some of the
4:53
cruises that started up
4:54
where you have to go on a cruise line
4:57
excursion now the reason for that
4:59
makes sense because what they want to do
5:00
particularly they call on different
5:02
is they want to protect both the people
5:04
in the port from being infected
5:06
and certainly their guests from being
5:08
infected when they're out and about
5:09
people saying when i go on a cruise i
5:10
don't necessarily want the extra cost
5:12
of excursion so it's at a cost i don't
5:15
or in fact they like to just go out and
5:17
self-explore and find their own way
5:19
around and do their own thing
5:20
so what people are saying is a whole lot
5:22
of the protocols which are great because
5:24
they're allowing cruisers to resume
5:25
are actually meaning a lot of people are
5:28
not going to go on cruises because it
5:29
gets rid of the very things
5:31
about cruising that they like this again
5:33
is a massive challenge
5:35
when cruisers start up against how
5:36
cruise lines can find a way of creating
5:38
a vacation experience
5:39
that both meets the needs of the health
5:41
authorities and protect
5:42
the passengers but also are appealing
5:44
enough for passengers to want to come on
5:46
that's a big issue i believe another key
5:49
is one which i certainly understand and
5:53
with me as a person who loves cruising
5:56
of going on a cruise and something
6:00
two things happen first of all your
6:01
cruise gets curtailed and you have to
6:03
head back to port because of some sort
6:05
of outbreak or risk of outbreak
6:07
and secondly you then get quarantined on
6:09
board the ship for an extended period of
6:10
which kind of as you know quarantine
6:12
tends to be up to two weeks although
6:14
with some testing can be reduced to five
6:16
this is what happened of course when
6:17
people saw it happen when the lockdown
6:19
first started and certainly a lot of
6:21
people are nervous about stepping on
6:23
in case that happens and certainly as
6:24
cruisers start up again a little bit of
6:26
that happen so we saw
6:27
with both paul gargan with sea dream
6:30
we saw where there was either a past
6:34
or someone on board was identified as
6:36
having tested for the virus
6:38
so what happened is the cruise was
6:39
curtailed that headed back to port
6:40
everyone was tested everyone's put into
6:42
people saying i don't want to spend
6:44
money when i know that there is a risk
6:46
there is a risk of me having my trip cut
6:49
and being quarantined on board the ship
6:51
or even on land and that is again
6:53
another big challenge just the whole
6:55
understanding how that protocol is going
6:57
to work that's holding a lot of people
6:59
from committing to cruising another
7:01
thing that's holding people back from
7:02
committing to cruising is understanding
7:04
what is going to happen if either they
7:06
fall ill or have to self-isolate before
7:08
the cruise or they arrive at the port
7:12
embarkation on the ship the cruise lines
7:14
have been relatively koi so far
7:15
certainly in my attempts to find out
7:17
so what actually happens if you are
7:18
refused embarking the ship
7:20
or during the cruise something happens
7:22
people really understand what is the
7:24
who pays for what and that's something i
7:27
think the cruise line is going to be
7:27
able to easily resolve
7:29
as we move forward but certainly the
7:30
uncertainty around what happens
7:32
is putting a lot of people off
7:33
committing to cruising right now
7:36
one of the most obvious and most
7:39
reasons for people not wanting to cruise
7:41
is the perception of cruising now
7:44
during the whole process in the build up
7:47
terminology floating petri dish sort of
7:50
entered the general kind of lexicon if
7:52
that's the right word
7:53
around the world certainly around the
7:54
western world and cruise ships became
7:56
identified as these floating petri
7:59
the media pushed the point and every
8:01
article you read about cruising
8:02
certainly since february march time
8:04
right through the whole
8:05
period so far that is constantly
8:07
referred to the sense that stepping on a
8:09
cruise ship is extremely risky
8:11
and that is really heightened and locked
8:13
people's perception of cruising if they
8:15
go on board a cruise it's very risky and
8:17
there's a lot of peer pressure
8:18
from friends from family from everybody
8:20
else if you talk about going on a cruise
8:22
people talk about how unsafe it is now
8:26
there is lots of evidence that against
8:28
that but certainly it's
8:29
the belief very strongly that there's
8:31
high risk that of course is reinforced
8:34
a lot of what people are being advised
8:36
in their countries is you know the risk
8:38
to nightclubs going to theaters going to
8:42
a lot of those have a lot of controls of
8:43
course on board a ship you have bars
8:45
you have nightclubs you have theaters
8:47
you have people in enclosed spaces
8:49
interacting so a lot of the things that
8:50
people have been warned about and told
8:53
on land of course are a fundamental part
8:55
of the cruising experience
8:56
so there is that whole perception
8:58
uncertainty still which
8:59
still has to be overcome and addressed
9:01
before our people are going to be
9:02
prepared to cruise again so certainly
9:04
that's the thing holding
9:05
the vast bulk of people who either
9:07
haven't tried cruising before but we're
9:08
thinking about it or perhaps to try one
9:10
or two cruises the sense that actually
9:11
stepping up ordership
9:12
is just a risk too far and it's better
9:16
land and that's again going to be a big
9:17
challenge i think for the cruise
9:18
industry the cruise lines
9:20
as they work through these protocols and
9:21
it's probably going to take some
9:23
and some successful months of cruising
9:25
before that's going to unlock
9:26
a lot of people's comfort zone in terms
9:30
back on board a cruise and that i think
9:31
is one of the most fundamental things
9:33
mass of people going cruising again what
9:36
about people who are saying this is
9:37
a lot of nonsense and i want to step on
9:41
there's two real common things that i'm
9:44
seeing for those people who are going
9:45
i want to cruise around the cruise now
9:47
first of all they are the absolute
9:49
die-hard cruisers who see cruising
9:51
as the ship and experience itself
9:53
they're almost not bothered about where
9:55
so they're very comfortable to do things
9:57
like cruises to nowhere
9:59
they're very comfortable to cruise
10:00
around their own country because it's
10:01
about the cruising experience
10:03
those people are keen to get on board
10:04
they know ships they trust the whole
10:07
and the other group of people are also
10:09
people who believe that the
10:11
worst of the pandemic is over i'm seeing
10:12
lots of comments on the channel around
10:14
people saying this is overhyped
10:16
we need to live our lives and just get
10:19
the risk is being really overplayed of
10:22
course the health authorities
10:23
are taking a different view and they're
10:25
not letting those people do
10:26
as they wish to do at that point in time
10:30
people don't want to cruise there are
10:32
some quite surprising and some for me
10:34
unexpected reasons for not cruising i'd
10:36
love to know what your
10:37
thoughts are about what is holding you
10:40
back from cruising if you are in fact
10:42
feeling that you don't want to step on a
10:43
cruise ship anytime soon which i know on
10:46
who watch the channel i know a lot of
10:48
you are big fans of cruising because you
10:50
the things that i do but are holding
10:52
back and not wanting to cruise
10:54
what is your reason love to hear so
10:56
leave your comments and let me know what
10:58
you think remember i have loads more
11:00
videos packed full of tips advice
11:01
updates around everything cruising so
11:03
why don't you watch another one of those
