I'm Gary beverage this is another of my
0:02
cruising tips of Travis I want to talk
0:03
about the five things that cruise ships
0:06
are doing while cruising is suspended
0:08
starting with this one one of the
0:11
biggest things that cruise ships are
0:13
actually doing while cruising a
0:14
suspended is actually sailing all around
0:18
the world to take crew back home when
0:20
cruising shut down in March there were
0:23
literally hundreds of thousands of crew
0:26
members on board ships that needed to
0:28
either because cruising wasn't starting
0:30
up soon their contracts were ended lots
0:32
of restrictions were put in place
0:33
particular in the United States of
0:35
getting crew off ships and onto planes
0:38
to go home and of course we saw lots of
0:40
countries closing their borders
0:42
so the cruise lines embarked on a
0:43
massive operation to put crew on ships
0:47
from sister lines and sell them all
0:49
around the world they sailed
0:50
particularly to the Philippines for
0:53
example and even today as I record this
0:55
in the Manila Bay there are 19 cruise
0:59
ships still there repatriating crew the
1:02
process once they get to the Philippines
1:04
is relatively complicated and takes a
1:05
while before they can repair it so in
1:08
Manila Bay at this point in time our
1:10
ships like the Queen Elizabeth the
1:11
Sapphire princess the nor dam Viking
1:13
Orion Costa Atlantica Costas arena
1:16
Golden Princess Caledonian sky sea
1:18
Princess Royal Princess the Rotterdam
1:20
Sun Princess Carnival spirit Pacific
1:22
Dorne Pacific Explorer Pacific princess
1:25
sapphire Princess Carnival panorama
1:27
majestic princess there are humongous
1:29
amounts of cruise ships in Manila Bay
1:31
it's quite a sight to behold so one of
1:34
the biggest things the cruise ships are
1:35
doing and have been doing is taking crew
1:38
home so even many months on they are
1:40
still repatriating crew and this is
1:43
gonna still go on for some time
1:44
the second thing they're doing is
1:46
finding somewhere to wait there are
1:49
roughly about 300 ships all around the
1:53
world in the passenger cruising business
1:56
and they're basically finding somewhere
1:58
to hold up and wait if you have a
2:01
favorite ship or even a favorite cruise
2:03
line and you want to know exactly where
2:05
the ships are at any point of time
2:07
there's an app that I use the app is
2:09
called marine traffic it's a really
2:11
great app there's a free version and a
2:12
version and you can see exactly where
2:15
ships are any point of time so you can
2:17
find out where they are the ships are
2:19
doing a couple of things one they're
2:21
basically finding a place where they can
2:23
and also they starting to form in little
2:25
clusters around the world finding places
2:27
where they think they're going to be
2:28
able to start cruising again so let's
2:29
take a look at where some of those
2:30
clusters are obviously one of the
2:32
biggest clusters of all is around the
2:35
sort of Miami Fort Lauderdale area which
2:37
of course are two of the really biggest
2:39
cruise ports in the world and also
2:41
you've got Port Canaveral just up the
2:43
coast there we're seeing lots of lots of
2:45
ships congregating around this areas and
2:47
Norwegian cruise lines Carnival Cruise
2:50
Lines MSC Cruise Lines Holland America
2:56
well Caribbean cruise line are all
2:58
having ships in this area and again
3:01
looking at the app I count at least 20
3:03
or 30 ships and what they do is they're
3:04
mostly hanging around the sort of
3:06
Bahamut area either just added sea or
3:09
actually using their private islands as
3:11
a way of giving the crew some respite
3:13
and some time on land and then of course
3:15
head occasionally into port to restock
3:19
another key area where they're
3:20
congregating is in the UK so outside
3:23
Southampton and even down to Dover
3:25
you're gonna find lots of pier no ship
3:26
sort of the Cunard ships find saga ships
3:29
mirela ships once you get up to Scotland
3:31
you'll find more of the Fred Olsen ships
3:33
you'll find in fact even some of the
3:35
Azamara ships and we've also seen more
3:37
recently in Newcastle one or two ships
3:39
particular from pino appearing there so
3:41
in the UK there's another whole bunch of
3:43
ships Italy which is another big key
3:45
cruising area and home for places like
3:47
Costa Wheesung ships again congregating
3:50
around the Italian coast one of the
3:53
other clusters of ships is ships that
3:56
were based in Australia Australia closed
3:58
all of their waters to cruise ships even
4:00
those that were harmful to their and
4:02
most of those moved off to Manila so
4:05
basically they're sitting out at sea
4:06
largely speaking and waiting and so on
4:09
to form in little clusters and as soon
4:10
as watch those ships that are clustered
4:12
near those big cruise ports because
4:14
that's probably sign of the ships their
4:16
light has come on tap kind of much
4:18
earlier than other ships the next thing
4:21
the cruise ships are doing and cruise
4:23
lines are doing to the cruise ships is
4:24
try to drive down the car
4:26
of keeping those ships glowing it's
4:29
extremely expensive to keep a cruise
4:31
ship ready to get into service I saw
4:33
numbers up to like 100 million dollars
4:35
per ship to keep them ticking over at
4:38
the beginning of the shutdown so what
4:40
the cruise lines are doing on those
4:41
cruise ships is that moving them for
4:42
what's known as a hot lay up to a cold
4:45
is where they're basically wine down the
4:47
ship so it's not ready to go into
4:50
service really quickly so they're moving
4:52
into cold lay off because that is much
4:54
cheaper for them to do and they have
4:56
been through that process and they're
4:57
still going through that process well of
4:59
course they're doing is just ongoing
5:01
maintenance making sure that there's
5:02
kind of daily maintenance going on to
5:04
keep the ships up to scratch and also to
5:07
you're still on they're kind of active
5:09
and busy one of the things that they're
5:11
not doing to cruise ships though is
5:13
moving them into drydock
5:15
so a whole bunch of ships would you to
5:17
go through dry docks and upscale
5:19
celebrity of course had their whole
5:21
celebrity upgrade process or Caribbean
5:23
we're going through a horrible upgrades
5:24
of their ships pretty much all of those
5:26
dry docks have been postponed for quite
5:28
a long period of time so they're not
5:29
spending a lot of money on big upgrades
5:31
on ships that were due to be planned so
5:33
those are things that are not happening
5:35
on cruise ships it's basically basic
5:37
maintenance the next thing that they are
5:39
doing though is making some of the
5:42
protocol changes and getting ready for
5:43
return to cruising one of the most
5:45
consistent things I'm seeing across all
5:47
of the cruise lines announcing is
5:48
upgrades to the ventilation system where
5:50
they're putting in various systems which
5:52
will purify the air much more or they're
5:54
changing their ventilation and
5:55
air-conditioning systems so they're
5:57
bringing much more fresh air because
5:59
because there's lots of concerns about
6:01
the role of ventilation air conditioning
6:03
in spread of the virus and so what the
6:06
cruise lines are doing because I know
6:07
that's a big issue and is a big
6:09
discussion point is they're installing
6:10
kind of air purifiers into their systems
6:13
even on new ships like scarlet lady has
6:15
had that whole system upgraded and
6:17
changed or for some of the older ships
6:19
they're upgrading all of those and we've
6:20
seen that pretty consistent across all
6:22
of the cruise lines the other thing that
6:24
cruise ships are doing while they are in
6:27
suspension and unable to cruise is make
6:29
sure that those crew that do remain on
6:31
the ship are kept busy occupied and are
6:34
kept as positive as can be so there's
6:37
the physical medical side where you'll
6:40
we'll have twice daily temperature
6:42
checks they've all been given
6:43
accommodation private accommodation so
6:45
they're not sharing accommodation this
6:46
is an amount of social distancing on
6:48
board to try and make sure that the crew
6:49
that are on board stay healthy and
6:51
there's no outbreak on board one of the
6:54
big challenges our crew facing of course
6:56
is much more mental health challenges
6:58
and we've seen some very unfortunate
6:59
incidents where crew have got really
7:01
really desperate and so one of the key
7:04
things the cruise lines are now trying
7:05
to do on their cruise ships is to try
7:06
and run a happy ship and a ship which
7:08
has much more counseling and help for
7:10
crew because clearly if you're stuck on
7:11
board you're away from home for very
7:13
long time and there's no early
7:16
indications of when you can get back to
7:17
work when you can get home that is
7:19
putting enormous pressure on crew and
7:20
we're seeing more and more tivity around
7:22
what cruise ships are doing to try and
7:23
keep crew not only physically and
7:25
medically happily but also mentally
7:27
happy cruise ships are pretty much not
7:29
able to sail we are seeing a few little
7:31
pockets popping up where Hurtigruten has
7:33
a few ships now setting in Norway the to
7:35
see dream ships are coming on stream you
7:37
seeing one or two river cruise ships
7:39
start and of course we're seeing lots of
7:41
people hoping to start in July and
7:42
August like on crews are hoping to start
7:44
up again because they have smaller ships
7:46
under 250 passengers so they don't fall
7:48
under the CDC rules so there's quite a
7:50
lot of things that are going on on
7:52
cruise ships mostly it's around waiting
7:54
positioning and getting ready for the
7:56
day when cruising starts again hope you
7:59
found this interesting and helpful I
8:00
have loads more videos packed full of
8:02
cruising tips advice and insights so why
8:04
don't you watch another one of those
