there's more guano or Pooh whatever and it's really interesting what I had never really appreciated is um that the

Penguins only are on land for a relatively short space of time they come on land for the breeding season and the

rest the winter and stuff they're all out at Sea and then they so they come on when there's lots of lots of snow and ice and as the snow and ice melts that's

because they that's where they hatch their eggs um and you know so it was a big big uh it was it's not massively

smelly when I went late in the season you had more of it I also when we were

once we were off gold Harbor and the wind was already blowing our away of these thousands and thousands of penguins it was more of a Aroma as it as

one of the ways you can go to Antarctica is obviously the Expedition uh ided or more classic Cruise Lines will also do

not going to get up and close with penguins for example but J may see Wales Etc and that's probably the most costeffective way of doing that uh so

anything to be of when traveling on older 20 to 30 years ships now actually Chris frame uh who you may know is a

maritime historian he has uh his own channel he does a lot of talks on particularly Cunard on kunard ships uh

and he also is part of the big Cruise podcast and he's done a video recently around traveling on older ships I think

probably the best watch out is you've got to bear in mind that um you know

they're not going to have as many of the more contemporary features so you know if you go on older Ro Caribbean ships

they don't have necessarily all of the bells and whistles that you can have on the newer ships so obviously the day is

often more dated things like Wi-Fi and stuff should be as the same because they will live in Stall starlink or whatever

so it's more around to find just a little bit more dated and sometimes they just haven't updated things like you

know the bathroom so for example if you go Queen Mary 2 which is now heading what 20 something years old the

get those big roughs of kind of wildlife that you get so that but it was extremely interesting I've also done

Expedition cruising around spard in fact that was my very first expedition cruise that I ever did I did that with silver

sea on silver Explorer so they very small ship that they've sold now it's about 20 if I remember correct

passengers that was fantastic and that we got to see a couple of polar bears

again uh there's seems fewer choices these days they have and the Norwegian government has also put and the swad I

obviously it rains a lot I like that time of the year um because not I mean Alaska's always busy but it's not

is when you have great chance of seeing Wildlife you you know once the salmon run starts the bear you're going to

there's more excursions and opportunity to see Bears you know because basically any Lake any River that's got all the

it depends on what you're looking for so the two lines that have been there the longest are hun America which has been

there the longest and Princess they kind of they really dominate Alaska they put a lot of ships up there they've been

there a long time so they have a lot of the best uh Port Landings uh you know docking places Etc but what I do

recommend when anyone asks me this question is to focus on the lines that go into glacia Bay glacia Bay is as the

name suggests a bay which has a whole bunch of glaciers in which are phenomenal now but not many cruise lines

go in there so the park authorities that run glacia Bay National Park uh only

allows seven uh two uh cruise ships in per day uh they limit the number that

can go in uh per season and those lines they basically have a 10-year agreement

risk of weather is quite large so certainly at the beginning of the Season you have more risk of ice which could

any of the Norwegian ships so for those most people will know I guess that Norwegian has their solar Studios which

uh are a separate card controlled area where it's all solar cabins at the moment they're all on Norwegian they're

inside they're quite small they also have a little Lounge um I think what they're s is they're going to be introducing more solar cabins across

their ships which are not just inside cabins I haven't been on I haven't been on Norwegian Viva cabins um so my only

key tip uh one of my key tips if you're ever looking at going on the solar

cabins on any of the Norwegian ships is first of all make sure that you like being in an inside cabin because they're

point is uh Cruise Lines um that go down to anarctica you know most if you want

to be able to land in have the greatest flexibility of landing and the best sites you have to have fewer than 200

passengers because you're only allowed to have 100 passengers on land at one time and many sites cap at 200

passengers that's why most the Expedition ships will have 200 or fewer passengers there are a couple that go

have more so Viking uh have about 370 if I remember correctly some of the huten

ships have over 500 or almost 500 but there they there's fewer sites they can
