I used to approach planning and booking a cruise the same way no matter what the cruise was
0:05
but I came to realize over the years as I started missing out on some cruises I really want to do
0:10
that I was approaching it in the wrong way. There are basically two types of cruises, kind of cruisers type A and cruises type B
0:19
With A, it's very simple because these are pretty much what I call on tap cruises
0:24
You can plan them a year ahead, months ahead, weeks ahead or even days ahead, and you will get
0:29
to go on that cruise because there is so much availability capacity itineries
0:34
So if you're looking at places like the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or even Alaska in normal times
0:39
you will find that you can pretty much go on a cruise whenever you want to
0:43
They're basically there on taps. You don't have to worry about necessarily planning way in advance, although of course you can
0:49
Then there's those cruisers in type B cruisers and these are the ones that are really popular
0:55
they're limited in some sort of way and they always sell out
0:59
What I learned over the years is there are nine cruises that fall into type B
1:04
These are the nine cruisers that you need to focus on and you need to plan and you need to
1:09
basically book as early as you possibly can. So what are these nine cruisers
1:14
The first cruiser should book way in advance, as soon as it goes on sale
1:18
is if there's a new ship or even a new cruise line entering the market
1:22
I've been for example at naming ceremonies of seaborn ships and I have met people there
1:27
that have been on every single maiden voyage of a seaborn ship. There are people that will
1:33
absolutely go on new ships. So whenever a big new ship comes along, so celebrity when they
1:37
launched Edge, Apex, that whole new class of ship, Virgin Voyages with Scarlet Lady, Ritz-Carton
1:44
launching a new cruise line. So whenever there's new ships, there's a lot of interest around
1:49
being the very first person to go on that, the same with cruise lines. So absolutely, if there's
1:53
a new ship coming and it's a favorite cruise line, book as soon as it goes on sale
1:57
you'll often find it gets sold out within minutes or hours. The second one is the absolute opposite of that and when ships are going out of service
2:05
One of the most famous and hardest to get was when the Queen Elizabeth the second
2:10
went out of service and sailed into Dubai. That was chock-full. But also recently Saga cruisers as they got rid of all their old ships
2:18
and brought in entirely new fleet, those cruises, the final cruises of the ships
2:24
they were taken out of service, completely sold out and were impossible. to get on those ships
2:29
So you'll find when ships are getting out of service or they're being sold onto another line
2:33
that an absolute time you want to book as soon as it goes on sale Another area where you really want to book way in advance is if there is a very special one event or it is a themed cruise and these are becoming more
2:45
and more popular. Some of the most famous for example include ships which sail to Monaco for
2:51
the Grand Prix because of course it's very expensive to stay in Monaco there's limited amounts of
2:57
hotels and it's a huge event so cruise lines will go there there more outside and they'll
3:01
build packages around that so you'll find many of those big events whether it's golf events or other big sporting events, you'll often find those
3:08
are one-off cruises and get sold out. You'll often find also there's some big
3:11
anniversary things so D-day commemorations or even special concerts where they get
3:16
big stars on board or perhaps it's a dancing with the stars or strictly
3:21
come dancing themed cruise and they've got the really big names or the judges
3:25
on board. Those kind of big special events with famous people will always sell up
3:29
really really fast and I have been on various cruises for example with different opera
3:33
singers. I took my mother on one. and that was sold out really, really quickly and it was really hard to get tickets for that
3:40
So those kind of big one-off special event ones you want to do. Kuhna to do quite a few of those where they might get all the three ships coming together
3:47
in a particular part of the world to commemorate, you know, 175th, whatever anniversary
3:52
Those things really, really, really popular because there's a sense of event
3:56
Another area where I strongly recommend you book in advance is for cruisers which have very short seasons
4:02
and often those tend to be expedition. One real big example is going through the northeast passage
4:10
This is a very difficult area to go through. Very few cruise lines have been through there
4:15
and when they do, those things are sold out immediately when they go on sale
4:21
So something like that, which is a very short season. In fact, it's a season of one, once a year they manage to do it
4:26
Those sell out. But there are a number of other examples. Even in Alaska, which has a pretty short season
4:30
which really runs from sort of May time to about September, October time. There's not much time of the year and there's some cap on capacity there
4:38
So those you want to really book in advance if you want to go to places like Alaska. If you want to go to Antarctica, you pretty much have to go between sort of November and to February, March time
4:48
You want to go to the Arctic. You're really talking sort of June, July, August time
4:52
So really short seasons, small ships, because many of these have small ships
4:56
So book those way in advance. So, for example, I went to Antarctica, I booked that 18 months in advance. My next Antarctica
5:02
trip, I booked coming up for almost two years in advance to make sure that I could get on the
5:07
ship in the right cabin at the right sort of price. So those kind of things with really short
5:12
seasons really important to book in advance If you want to go to the Mediterranean if you want to go to the Caribbean there lots of choice lots of options and that becomes less critical Another key one to book way in advance is if you thinking of doing a world voyage world voyages normally go on sail
5:28
two years or sometimes even more in advance of sailing, when they put on sale initially the whole
5:35
entire world voyage. As time goes on, they start to chop it up into smaller segments. You'll find
5:41
actually, that if you are in the position where you want to go on a world cruise and you want to book the very best cabin because there's not very many of those, they sell out really, really fast
5:48
The best cabins actually sell out quickest on a world cruise because there's people who want to go
5:52
they want to do the whole big thing and they're going to spend a lot of money to go. But world cruises extended voyage is really, really important to do. So for example
6:00
I'm looking at maybe doing a full world voyage having done half of one and we're looking at two years
6:06
in advance, three years in advance because if we're going to spend up to three months on a cruise ship
6:10
We want to make sure we get absolutely the right cabin in the right spot on the ship
6:15
Absolutely, we want to make sure that it's perfect. So way, way in advance, I strongly recommend you because you want to make sure you get exactly the right ship
6:22
exactly the right place, and it's got to be absolutely perfect because you're spending a lot of time there
6:27
So World Voyages definitely book those way in advance. Link to that is if you're really fussy about the cabin
6:34
So I, for example, I really like to choose the cabin, waiters on the ship
6:37
So most of the cruises that I book, I book a long time in advance
6:41
I like to plan way in advance. I like to choose the cabin I want. And if you're watching in my videos about choosing a cabin
6:47
you'll know that I have very specific things I like to do, and I'm prepared to book those in advance
6:52
And sometimes if you book a little bit in advance, you can still get them at a better price
6:57
But if you're really, really specific, there's a specific type of cabin you want. So, for example, if you're looking for an accessibility cabin
7:02
there are not always loads of those onboard a ship. So you want to make sure you book those way in advance
7:07
If you're a solo traveler, many cruise lines have very few solo cabins
7:12
So again, you want to book those way in advance because there may only be a handful of those on board
7:17
and you want to make sure you get those really quickly. So if there's a very specific cabin you want to, your very specific needs, make sure you get those
7:24
Again, if you're perhaps traveling as a family and you want to have a family cabin, again, there's not always loads of those on ships, so you want to book those way in advance
7:32
Another area is festive voyages. So if you want to go away during the Christmas, the New Year time period
7:40
those you want to book in advance, partly because they're an extremely popular time to go cruising
7:44
There's lots of people piling in and going, and some of them have become real traditions
7:48
So, for example, I have been a number of times on a Cunard Christmas cruise
7:53
They do the Caribbean every single year and they been doing it for decades It goes out of New York around about the 20th of December I think 21st 22nd of December and comes back to New York around the 3rd or 4th of
8:04
January. I met people when we first went on that cruise that have been doing it since they were
8:10
children and they're now in their 20s. Their family and extended family go every single year and
8:14
they book those as soon as they come on sale. But again even if you're sailing on different
8:19
voyages around about the world at festive time. So for example if you're in a new
8:24
Europe or want to go on a European cruise because most of the ships have been moved from Europe
8:28
to the Caribbean there's not a lot of choice if you want to go cruising at Christmas out of Europe
8:32
so the choice is relatively small so you have less capacity if you want to go to the Caribbean at
8:38
Christmas you may find there's more choices if you actually say that out of Miami or Fort Lauderdale
8:42
but really if you want to go Christmas it's a really good idea to book those in advance
8:46
particularly if you're traveling with an extended family you want to get cabins close to each other or interconnecting cabins really important book those way way in advance
8:54
Another area to look at is river cruising in Europe. Now there is more and more capacity coming on board for river cruises, but generally
9:04
speaking they're sold out in advance. So I've been looking for example at going river
9:08
cruising at much shorter notice five, six months in advance and found it really
9:14
hard to do in that peak season and the season really runs from sort of
9:20
April time, summer of March to really October. There are some Christmas cruises, Christmas market cruises. But if you want to go at the peak time
9:28
even though there's more capacity coming aboard, you'll find it with the big popular lines. It's really hard. So river cruising, you want to plan way in advance. And that may change
9:36
over time as more capacity comes aboard. But I would strongly recommend with river cruising in Europe book that way, way in advance. So you again get the ship you want, the itiner
9:45
you want at the time you want. There are very few options for going cruising with your pet
9:51
So if you do want to go cruising with your pet, this is one error you have to book way in advance
9:56
I have a whole video about cruising with your pets, but one of the best ways to go cruising with your pet is doing a transatlantic cruise on the Queen Mary 2
10:04
But they only have around about 22 kennels and they are very, very popular
10:09
And of course they're not doing transatlantics all year round. So if you want to go with your pet on a transatlantic cruise on the Queen Mary 2, that's again something you need to look at booking way in advance
10:19
Kuhna would actually recommend you look at between 18 months. and two years in advance to make so that you'd absolutely get a kennel for your pet
10:26
Booking in advance really important for those nine reasons. I have loads more videos packed
10:32
full of tips and advice so if you find this helpful why don't you watch another one of those right now
