I'm Gary beverage this is another of my
0:02
cruising tips for travelers I want to
0:04
talk about a series of really big and
0:06
significant setbacks that are getting in
0:08
the way of cruising starting up again
0:10
any time soon one of the biggest changes
0:14
that have happened is clear the cruise
0:16
line Association have announced that all
0:18
members of clear have now voluntarily
0:22
suspended all cruising and to at least
0:25
the 15th of September this particularly
0:27
affects all cruisers in and out of the
0:29
United States the CDC in the United
0:31
States had a no sell order which was due
0:34
to expire at the end of July
0:36
however there's big expectations that
0:38
that was going to be renewed
0:39
so certainly clear I'll getting on to
0:41
the front foot and setting a new date
0:42
feels a lot like they're expecting this
0:45
date to be pushed back even further so
0:47
for example they said the following we
0:50
will continually evaluate the evolving
0:53
situation and make a determination as to
0:55
whether a further extension is necessary
0:58
they do talk about hopefully using this
1:01
time in September to engage with the CDC
1:03
the Center for Disease Control and
1:05
certainly one of the big challenges and
1:07
things that were seen getting in the way
1:09
of cruising starting up again is lack of
1:12
engagement with the CDC there have been
1:14
certainly publicly only one key meeting
1:17
between the cruise lines and the CDC and
1:19
sort of a formal meeting and that was
1:21
still to discuss crew repatriation rules
1:24
I'm sure the stuff going behind the
1:26
scenes but we are not seeing major
1:28
engagement we've seen a number of
1:30
senators we've seen a number of travel
1:32
associations writing letters sort of
1:35
public letters encouraging the CDC to
1:37
engage so certainly a big setback we're
1:39
seeing is that cruises have been pushed
1:41
back to the 15th of September and
1:43
certainly lots of noise in the system
1:45
about lack of engagement in getting
1:48
another key setback in terms of getting
1:51
cruising up and running again anytime
1:53
soon is country bands the most
1:56
significant of these happened in recent
1:57
days where Spain as they announced
2:00
lifting of travel and opening their
2:02
borders to land-based travelers they
2:04
made it clear that they were extending
2:06
the ban on cruise ships calling at
2:08
Spanish ports indefinitely and there's
2:10
no date for that to be renewed this is
2:12
really really significant
2:13
as you look at Europe and the
2:15
Mediterranean Spanish ports get around
2:17
10 million passengers going through them
2:21
places like Barcelona which is a really
2:23
really significant and important
2:25
invocation disembarkation port they can
2:27
have up to 5 million of those passengers
2:29
passing through so Spain closing its
2:32
borders closing its ports to cruise
2:34
ships is a really big deal what's also a
2:37
big deal is they also refer to guidance
2:39
from the European equivalent of the CDC
2:41
in the US which does talk about the
2:43
ongoing risk that cruise ships pose
2:46
where people are in confined spaces for
2:48
extended period of time
2:50
so certainly we're seeing ports not
2:52
opening yet anytime soon to cruise ships
2:56
and this is a big issue
2:57
we're already seen of course Canada have
2:58
closed their borders to cruise ships
3:00
right through to the middle of October
3:03
we're seeing Australia have closed for
3:06
ships until September 2020 but we
3:08
they've also been talking about allowing
3:10
you know international travelers or
3:11
whether they also push that back seems
3:13
fairly to me certain we've seen places
3:16
as far afield as Seychelles also closing
3:19
for cruise ships until 2022 so certainly
3:21
we're not seeing lots of ports and
3:23
countries yet open your cruise ships and
3:24
those announcements from Spain certainly
3:26
were a big setback to that whole process
3:29
the next area where I think we're seeing
3:31
some setbacks is we're seeing that
3:34
cruise lines are actively disposing of
3:36
ships and also looks like potentially
3:37
closing down some of their brands so
3:39
let's explore some of those issues in
3:41
the last week that I was recording this
3:43
Carnival have already announced the
3:44
disposal of six of their ships and
3:47
that's Carnival Corporation so we don't
3:49
know yet which of their various brands
3:51
it's coming from it their all carnival
3:52
ships or 100 American ships or princess
3:54
ships or whatever we don't yet know what
3:56
those ships are Arnold Donald the CEO
3:58
also made it clear that they're looking
3:59
to accelerate their plans to get rid of
4:01
ships so we're going to see more ships
4:03
going from the Carnival Corporation we
4:06
haven't heard from the other cruise
4:07
lines if they have any plans to do that
4:09
we've seen one big sign though with
4:12
Pullman tour which is a joint venture
4:13
between Royal Caribbean and some Spanish
4:16
based travel companies and what we've
4:18
seen is those ships currently are
4:20
actually two of the ships are in Naples
4:22
one of them is two lumen Ella repair
4:24
trading crew but we've seen reports
4:27
from where his crew center sites that
4:29
those ships are being stripped back lots
4:31
of stuffs being taken off the ship also
4:33
if you take a look on a site that sells
4:36
big yachts and big ships to ships which
4:38
look surprisingly like the Pullman Tour
4:42
monarch and the Pullman Tour horizon
4:45
appear to be for sale so it certainly
4:47
looks like we may be seeing some
4:49
disposals of ships and disposals of
4:51
smaller brands the other thing that's
4:54
really important to that is all the
4:55
cruise lines have also made it clear
4:56
that when they start up it's like to be
4:58
a slow phased process with a slowly
5:01
bring on ships probably focusing a lot
5:03
on big home ports and much more to the
5:06
drive to port market so certainly we see
5:08
a contraction and removal of ships from
5:11
the fleet's which also suggests if
5:13
cruising does start it may start in a
5:14
much slower and much more staggered way
5:17
than many people would hope another
5:19
setback in terms of cruising getting up
5:21
and running again was in the United
5:24
States where we saw one of the river
5:26
cruise lines that were planning to start
5:28
up with their river cruising cancelling
5:30
and pulling all the sailings at quite
5:32
short notice because of a resurgence of
5:35
Cova 19 cases in the territories and the
5:38
states that they were planning to sell
5:39
in so that was up in the Pacific
5:41
Northwest so we certainly saw that
5:43
cruise line pulling back because of the
5:45
surgeons in cases as countries come out
5:47
of lockdown we're seeing some increases
5:49
in cases we think something creases and
5:51
what's called the are the the rate that
5:53
it's passed on if we're seeing as
5:56
ease that rate increasing this science
5:59
had already some countries potentially
6:01
and certainly some cruise lines are
6:03
having to pull back on opening up and
6:06
starting up cruises again whilst it
6:08
looks like a big mainstream cruising has
6:11
had a number of setbacks on a positive
6:13
note we are seeing some small pockets of
6:15
cruising starting we saw in Norway
6:17
Hurtigruten and C dream running cruises
6:19
already for Norwegian passengers only
6:22
two Norwegian ports we've seen some
6:24
limited river cruising starting up with
6:26
a Rosa in the doís row Nikko cruises on
6:29
the Rhine for German passengers we've
6:31
also seen porn art do a pre sell as they
6:35
work to get approval from the French
6:37
government to sell out of French ports
6:39
to French port oniy for
6:40
French citizens they haven't got final
6:42
sign-off on it but they have put those
6:45
cruises on pre-cell so there must be
6:47
relatively confident an uncrewed which
6:49
doesn't fall under the cdc rules because
6:52
it's less than 250 passengers have
6:54
announced that they will start sailing
6:55
in Alaska in August with a whole set of
6:59
protocols around supplying pretest
7:02
showing that your negative various
7:04
protocols like that there have been over
7:06
recent days some relatively big setbacks
7:09
in cruising getting up and running any
7:11
time soon in 2020 I'll keep you posted
7:14
as we learn more but I have loads more
7:16
videos of updates tips and advice about
7:19
cruising so why don't you watch another
7:21
one of those right now
