In this video discover the nine things that cruise lines do not tell you, and do not want you to know. Cruising is a great vacation but there are a range of things that cruise lines would rather you did not know about how they operate, conditions on the ship, rules they follow and some restrictions on your rights and what you can do that you agree to when buying a ticket (but are not drawn to your attention until things go wrong). I reveal the things that I think you need to know about... including some rather ghoulish and unusual facilities hidden from passengers. If you think I have missed any things leave a comment..

in this video you're going to discover
0:01
the nine things that cruise lines don't
0:03
tell you and don't want you to know hi
0:06
I'm Gary Bainbridge and this is another
0:08
of my tips for travelers please
0:10
subscribe to the channel and you'll
0:12
never miss the next video packed full of
0:14
travel tips and advice the first thing
0:17
that cruise lines don't tell you and
0:18
don't want you to know is that the ports
0:21
that are literally on your itinerary are
0:23
not guaranteed the cruise lines are able
0:26
to at the captain's discretion change or
0:29
not call into a port if it's deemed that
0:32
it's either unsafe the weather's too bad
0:33
or the some incident that prevents them
0:36
or they feel it's not suitable going
0:37
into that port so the cruise line
0:39
doesn't tell you upfront that you may
0:40
not go to all of the ports that are
0:42
listed on your itinerary of course they
0:44
normally do a try and do everything they
0:46
possibly can to make all the ports so
0:48
for example I've actually been on a
0:49
cruise where half of the six ports that
0:52
we would do to call on we never made it
0:54
to and I've been on many other cruises
0:55
where one or two of the port's have had
0:57
to be cancelled or skipped normally it's
0:59
due to weather
1:01
another thing that the cruise lines
1:02
don't tell you but it's very important
1:04
to know is that the cruise ships do not
1:05
wait for passengers who are late back to
1:07
the ship perhaps have gone self touring
1:09
and have lost track of time and don't
1:11
get backed by the all aboard and
1:12
departure time you've gone on a cruise
1:14
line excursion it's running late the
1:16
ship will wait for that but if you laid
1:18
back to the ship and the ship is left
1:20
without you they also leave you on your
1:21
own it's up to you to make your own
1:24
plans and either get yourself back to
1:26
the ship or head home they do not
1:28
provide support and health often the
1:30
port agent will try and be as helpful as
1:32
possible also if you have a medical
1:34
emergency and you have to leave the ship
1:37
for medical reasons the cruise line will
1:39
also then leave you to then sort it out
1:42
yourself so again very important make
1:43
sure that you have travel insurance to
1:45
cover yourself if you are perhaps led
1:47
back to ship and stranded in port or if
1:49
you do have a medical issue that the
1:50
ship will not wait for you and also the
1:52
cruise line will take no responsibility
1:53
for sorting you out if you are left
1:56
behind another thing that the cruise
1:58
lines don't tell you and don't talk
1:59
about is about crime now crime does
2:02
happen on a ship the good news is though
2:04
the level of crime is likely to be much
2:07
lower than it is on land now it gets a
2:10
little bit murky in terms of the
2:11
statistics and no one's 100%
2:13
sure of how much crime that's actually
2:15
happened on cruise ships because there's
2:16
no strict regulations about where crime
2:18
gets reported and who gets reported to
2:21
now in terms of the reported crime
2:22
statistics which are pretty low the
2:25
Maine reported crime is actually assault
2:27
and sexual assault now bear in mind
2:29
these numbers though are pretty small
2:31
it's also had not known how much for
2:33
example theft takes place because it's
2:35
felt that many of these statistics on
2:37
small theft is probably not reported and
2:39
just sorted out within the ship so bear
2:42
in mind when you go aboard a cruise ship
2:43
you're not entering a guaranteed crime
2:46
free so most cruise ships also have some
2:49
kind of prison facility now this may
2:52
just be a room with very little
2:53
furniture and where if there is a member
2:56
crew or a passenger that is needs to
2:58
actually be held in a prison situation
3:00
there is normally space onboard which is
3:02
known as the bring one of the things
3:04
that cruise lines do not talk about is
3:06
that they do dump a lot of stuff into
3:08
the ocean now there are very very strict
3:11
rules and regulations about what can and
3:13
cannot be put into the ocean and in fact
3:15
Cruise Lines follows some stricter
3:17
regulations than they are required to
3:18
you by maritime law so let's take a look
3:20
at what actually they are allowed to put
3:22
into the ocean so they are allowed to
3:25
put in to the ocean sewerage once
3:27
they're into international waters the
3:29
maritime regulations actually allow you
3:32
to put untreated sewage into the sea
3:35
however cruise lines follow the clear
3:37
the cruise line Association regulations
3:39
where they only put treated sewage into
3:42
the sea food waste is also normally
3:44
processed it's crushed down turn into
3:46
almost a liquid form and this can also
3:49
be released into the ocean once their
3:51
heart into international waters great
3:53
water is another key side product of
3:55
cruise ships so this is stuff that comes
3:57
out of the showers perhaps from washing
3:59
dishes again this water is normally
4:00
treated and is able to be put into the
4:03
ocean all glass is separated into color
4:06
its crushed down and put into bags and
4:07
this is disembarked in certain ports and
4:10
they sold on to people who recycling
4:12
also your cabin steward and also other
4:15
people on board and the environmental
4:17
team will make sure that all other waste
4:19
is sorted so paper plastics aerosol or
4:22
sorted many cruise ships will incinerate
4:25
a lot of rubbish but
4:26
not allowed to put that Ash into the
4:28
oceans of the actual get taken off when
4:30
their import there is very strict
4:32
regulations though on things like
4:33
chemicals that are used perhaps for
4:35
creating photographs cooking all those
4:37
type or products they are not allowed to
4:40
put those into the ocean so those have
4:42
to be packed up and they are disembarked
4:44
in a port one things I recommend you do
4:48
is if there ever is there
4:49
behind-the-scenes tour which includes
4:51
meeting the environmental officer do it
4:54
because it's really interesting to go
4:55
and have a look at the whole recycling
4:57
and the treatment plant on board a
5:00
cruise ship and they will expend much
5:01
more detail with that specific ship does
5:03
in terms of getting rid of waste of
5:05
course the other thing to realize is the
5:06
cruise ships do have a pretty big carbon
5:08
footprint the cruise industry is trying
5:10
to improve it so there are more
5:11
regulations around the type of fuel used
5:14
how much fuel is used the speed that
5:16
they travel and of course looking for
5:17
alternative forms to make it more
5:19
eco-friendly but of course it does have
5:21
a big carbon footprint the next thing I
5:24
want to talk about is that people do go
5:27
missing off cruise ships up to 19 people
5:30
go overboard or missing from a cruise
5:33
ship every year now bear in mind there
5:35
are millions and millions of people that
5:37
go cruising so the number is pretty
5:39
small also bear in mind that it is
5:41
pretty much impossible to fall off a
5:44
cruise ship anyone who's been on cruise
5:46
ship will note that the railings are
5:48
pretty high and so most people go
5:50
overboard tend to have done it because
5:53
they've either deliberately jumped
5:54
overboard or they've been very drunk and
5:56
irresponsible and done things like
5:58
climbed up on the railings whilst we're
6:01
looking at this that's slightly ghoulish
6:02
side of cruising the other thing that
6:04
cruise lines don't tell you is that they
6:06
do have a morgue and they're also
6:08
required to carry body bags most
6:10
publicly available reports say that up
6:12
to 200 people a year die on board a
6:14
cruise ship most leas tend to be elderly
6:16
passengers so the numbers dying on board
6:18
are relatively low when you consider the
6:20
huge amount of people that go cruising
6:22
and most of the deaths are due to
6:24
natural causes
6:25
so if someone dies on board the normal
6:27
procedure is to take people off at the
6:29
nearest port have a death certificate
6:31
and repatriate them home if you hear
6:34
over the public address system operation
6:36
rising star that indicates that there
6:39
has been a death
6:39
on board the other thing that cruise
6:41
lines don't tell you very overtly is
6:43
that although they're owned normally by
6:46
American or perhaps British owners they
6:48
register the ships in foreign places
6:50
particularly Liberia Panama and the
6:53
Bahamas the reason for this is they then
6:55
do not have to follow the rules of their
6:58
country where their owns they don't
6:59
refer the u.s. rules or the UK rules
7:01
that they can follow the rules of a
7:03
country where they're registered and
7:04
those countries which are flags of
7:06
convenience countries tend to have much
7:09
more liberal employment laws
7:11
environmental laws safety laws so
7:14
actually the cruise lines are able to
7:15
operate their ships with less strict
7:18
regulations than they would if they're
7:20
registered for example in the United
7:22
States
7:23
another thing the cruise lines don't
7:24
really tell you a vertically upfront is
7:26
that their cancellation policies are
7:28
incredibly tight and very very strict so
7:31
of course it's buried within the cruise
7:33
contract but importantly make sure that
7:35
you understand what the cancellation
7:37
conditions are when you book a cruise so
7:40
for example in many cases you will lose
7:42
up to 25 percent of the cruise fare if
7:45
you cancel up to 90 days now normally
7:48
what that means is whatever deposit
7:49
you've paid you will usually lose
7:52
between 90 days and six days you can
7:54
lose anything up to 50% or sometimes
7:56
even 75% of the cruise fare if you
8:00
cancel and after 60 days and so now
8:02
after 30 days you're going to lose
8:03
anything between 75% and a hundred
8:06
percent of the fare also importantly
8:08
many cruise lines count a name change as
8:11
a cancellation so if you have perhaps
8:13
traveling with a friend or a partner and
8:15
they have to drop out for whatever
8:16
reason and you want to substitute
8:18
someone you in many Cruise Lines will
8:20
count that as a cancellation make sure
8:23
that you understand what the
8:24
cancellation charges or penalties are
8:26
going to be and take up travel insurance
8:28
that's going to cover cancellations
8:30
because you never know what's going to
8:31
happen particularly booking a cruise way
8:33
in advance
8:34
another thing that cruise lines don't
8:36
tell you is when you book and buy your
8:38
ticket you're actually accepting the
8:40
cruise contract so you're not only given
8:42
the cruise contract to look at but it's
8:44
not me in the brochure or you can look
8:45
at it online they remind you are
8:47
agreeing when you buy that ticket and
8:49
pay for the ticket to the contract a
8:50
couple of things that people don't
8:52
always understand
8:53
that the contract includes are some of
8:55
the following so for example there's
8:56
normally a clause that says that the
8:58
cruise line is able to search you and
9:00
your cabin whenever they want to without
9:02
mister giving you a very strong reason
9:03
to do that secondly they're also saying
9:06
they take no liability for contractors
9:08
now many of the facilities aren't board
9:10
with it's a photography the spa
9:12
perhaps lecturers they are not normally
9:15
employed or often not employed by the
9:17
cruise line and the cruise line is
9:18
saying that they will have no liability
9:19
if there's any issues that even in many
9:22
cases includes medical facilities which
9:24
are often contracted out to a separate
9:26
company the third area is around
9:28
photography so often in the cruise
9:30
contract it will say that the cruise
9:32
line can take images of you and they are
9:34
able to use that in marketing or even
9:36
advertising in many cases without
9:37
rewarding you on the other side
9:39
sometimes cruise contracts state that if
9:42
you take images they can also stop you
9:44
using them whether it's on social media
9:46
that can ask you to take them down or
9:48
whether you want to use them on blogs or
9:49
whatever so sometimes in the cruise
9:51
contracts it actually restricts what you
9:52
can do with your own photographs also
9:56
very very importantly the cruise contact
9:58
will normally state where if there's any
10:01
litigation or legal dispute where the
10:04
jurisdiction is going to be they can
10:06
decide a name a particular court so if
10:08
you ever end up having to get into
10:10
dispute with the cruise line and go to
10:11
court they will in the cruise contract
10:14
to determine where that court will be
10:16
and of course they're likely to have
10:17
chosen a court or jurisdiction which
10:19
they think is going to be best for them
10:22
hope you find that helpful ads giving
10:24
you something to think about what I'd
