in this video I'm gonna give you nine
0:01
tips on how you can minimize the chance
0:04
of getting seasick I'm Gary beverage of
0:06
tips for travelers I've been on way over
0:09
50 cruises and so far I have not been
0:12
seasick by following these 9 tips the
0:15
first tip that I've got is do not psych
0:17
yourself do not wind yourself up and
0:19
believe that you're going to get seasick
0:21
many people that get seasick have got
0:23
themselves into such a frenzy that they
0:25
keep thinking about it they worried
0:27
about it and they almost bring it upon
0:28
themselves so every little motion every
0:31
little thing will make them think
0:33
they're gonna get seasick so don't psych
0:34
yourself up have a positive attitude and
0:36
believe that you are not gonna get
0:38
seasick that is the first and most
0:39
important thing that you can do the
0:41
second thing that you can do is avoid x
0:43
or void itineraries when it's most
0:45
likely to be rough so for example
0:47
crossing the Atlantic in the winter
0:49
months you are very likely they're very
0:51
rough seas I've costed a couple of times
0:54
you've had 50 60 foot waves and it's
0:56
been very rough other things to avoid
0:58
are things like the Bay of Biscay
1:01
sending out of Southampton that is
1:03
renowned for being rough and causing a
1:06
lot of people to be seasick another
1:08
renowned area for rough seas is Drake's
1:11
passage heading to Antarctica avoid
1:13
cruises which have a lot of back to back
1:14
sea days because there is a chance if
1:16
you're at sea a long time that could
1:18
make you feel seasick you'll find that
1:20
at the beginning and the end of a
1:21
cruising seas in any particular region
1:23
whether it's a Caribbean or the
1:24
Mediterranean that's when you like to
1:26
have roughest seas so how do you find
1:28
out ten areas or routes that are likely
1:30
to have this smoother seas now of course
1:32
there's no guarantee that the sea is
1:34
going to be smooth but by choosing these
1:36
times of the year you're going to
1:37
maximize a chance so for example the
1:38
Mediterranean season if you go right in
1:40
the middle of the season which is july
1:42
august time you laddies have the
1:44
smoother seas middle of the caribbean
1:46
season so that's around about sort of
1:48
christmas time you like to have the
1:49
smoother seas selling right within the
1:52
depths of the Norwegian fjords saying
1:55
right within the depths of Indian side
1:56
passage in Alaska now if you want to
1:59
absolutely maximize your chance of not
2:02
being seasick then the one thing to do
2:04
is to go on a river cruise you're
2:05
sailing up and down rivers you're close
2:07
to the banks at all times and is pretty
2:09
much near impossible to be
2:11
seasick on a river cruise so once you've
2:13
chosen dried out enemy the third thing
2:15
to focus on is the cabin now the best
2:17
cabin to choose on a cruise ship is
2:19
midship so in the center of the ship and
2:21
as low down as possible now the reason
2:23
for that is as the ship moves it moves
2:26
on an axis so right in the middle is
2:28
where there is at least movement now
2:30
I've been on cruises for example where
2:31
I've had a cabin midships and had
2:33
friends who are at the back of the ship
2:35
and we've been passing through very
2:38
rough seas we hadn't really seen very
2:39
much in our cabin we went to the back to
2:41
see our friends and we could barely
2:44
stand up
2:45
the ship was moving so much so and
2:46
midships load is down as possible is
2:49
absolutely key so the fourth thing is
2:51
come prepared and what I mean by that is
2:54
come prepared with seasick tablets now
2:56
you can buy these at the pharmacist or
2:58
the drugstore you generally buy them
3:00
behind the counter so you have to ask
3:01
the pharmacist for them you don't need a
3:03
prescription for them these are really
3:05
important so what I recommend you do aim
3:06
to take them for the first sort of 48
3:08
hours of cruise until you get your sea
3:10
legs it's a really good idea it's kind
3:12
of insurance policy even if you don't
3:14
need them now if you're in the United
3:15
States or Canada speak brand names to
3:17
look out for Dramamine or ba9 now if
3:20
you're in the UK or Europe the product
3:22
is called stir Juran or it's also known
3:25
as Donner owned now I've used both of
3:27
those products both Dramamine and
3:29
Strowger on and they have been fantastic
3:31
you normally have to take them out the
3:33
day before or even a cup of hours before
3:34
you cruise
3:35
they're almost like an insurance policy
3:36
they may make you feel a little bit
3:38
drowsy so do look for sort of the
3:40
non-drowsy versions but certainly they
3:42
are likely to give you the greatest
3:44
chance of not being seasick most cruise
3:45
lines will offer complimentary
3:47
seasickness notice but it's worth
3:48
bringing your own products so you know
3:51
that you've taken them advanced and
3:52
you've basically ensured that you are
3:54
all fine now my fifth tip is for people
3:56
who don't want to take products that you
3:58
ingest now there are a couple of
3:59
remedies and solutions that people use
4:03
and have found very successful which do
4:05
not require you actually swallowing
4:06
anything it's one of the more popular
4:08
ones are patches which you put behind
4:10
your ear you'll often see on a cruise
4:12
ship a lot of people win little patches
4:13
behind it a lot of people swear by those
4:15
the other thing that people do are
4:17
little wrist bands and these are little
4:19
cloth wrist bands they have little metal
4:20
discs which push on your wrist
4:23
provide a kind of an acupressure and
4:26
that's a quite a known technique for
4:27
trying to prevent seasickness certainly
4:30
worth trying if you don't want to take
4:31
any sort of pills now my next tip is to
4:34
actually use the product that seafarers
4:37
have used for basically ever and that's
4:40
ginger ginger was used before you know
4:42
pills were discovered and ginger is
4:44
really known to sort of settle
4:45
seasickness settle the stomach and make
4:47
you feel much better so you'll find on
4:48
many cruise ships they will actually
4:50
offer bits of ginger around the ship
4:53
particularly the bars or you know at the
4:55
dining rooms eat ginger Jing ginger
4:57
Ale's my sensitive is to avoid triggers
5:00
so things that can basically spark a
5:02
feeling of nauseous now these can be
5:04
things like very strong smells very
5:06
strong smelling food drinking lots of
5:08
alcohol another of those is reading so
5:11
if you're actually reading a book or you
5:12
know looking at something on your phone
5:14
or tablet staring at one space is a
5:17
really bad thing to do because it can
5:19
make you feel motion sickness and
5:20
seasick so thing to do is if you are
5:22
reading is to read a little paragraph
5:24
and look up basically don't just keep
5:26
staring down at one thing so try and
5:28
avoid those triggers the next thing I
5:30
recommend you do is make sure that you
5:31
get outside into the fresh air as much
5:33
as possible so get outside on the decks
5:35
take in the fresh air also very
5:36
important is take a look at the horizon
5:38
try and look forward on the ship rather
5:41
than to the side but get out in the
5:42
fresh air it will make you feel much
5:43
better now if all of that fails if you
5:46
do start feeling sick and you are
5:47
actually nauseous and throwing up many
5:50
of those are the things that have told
5:51
you to do
5:52
will not work so what you do get
5:54
yourself down to the medical center and
5:55
have a jab they have an incredible
5:58
injection which will pretty much knock
6:00
you out for you know quite a few hours
6:02
you'll have a good old sleep your wake
6:03
up and you will feel fantastic now the
6:06
downside of that it can be very
6:07
expensive it can be around about a
6:09
hundred US dollars to have that job I've
6:12
been on cruises with people who've been
6:13
extremely seasick throwing up feeling
6:15
absolutely terrible they've had the jab
6:17
had a good old sleep and then are ready
6:19
to party eat and have a great time so
6:22
that is your final fallback solution if
6:24
you've got any more tips I'd love to
6:26
hear them please leave a comment and let
6:27
me know what you do to try and avoid
6:28
seasickness and what's worked for you
6:31
any great tips that you've got the thing
6:33
I'd really like you to do of course is
