Star Trek Cannes was an experiment. Though not the first audio drama in the Trek universe
0:05
this was a swing fully endorsed and supported by Secret Hideout and CBS. The cast was strong
0:11
the production was excellent, and the response has largely been positive. The project was first
0:17
announced by Nicholas Meyer, who of course directed Star Trek II, Star Trek VI, and co-wrote
0:22
Star Trek IV. As he heralded the wrath of Cannes, he seemed the best positioned to further explore
0:29
the Madman's journey and life. However, that version of the story was announced as a short
0:35
television arc, no more than three episodes. It went through several changes after this
0:42
By the time it was given its first full trailer in February of 2025, it had morphed to become the
0:49
nine-episode audio drama that we finally received, with episodes airing weekly from the 8th of
0:56
September, Star Trek Day. The cast included some newcomers to the franchise like Naveen Andrews as
1:02
Khan, Ren Schmidt as Lieutenant Marla MacGyvers, and Sonia Cassidy as Dr. Rosalind Lear. Returning
1:08
to Trek were actors like Maury Stirling as Ivan, Tim Russ as Ensign Tuvok, and George Takei as
1:16
Captain Hikaru Sulu. Audiences have been crying out for stories set within the so-called Lost Era
1:24
for quite some time. So discovering this prequel would also serve as a sequel to Star Trek Generations
1:30
increased excitement exponentially. What then did we learn from this tale? And was it a worthwhile
1:38
endeavour overall? I'm Sean Ferrick for Trek Culture and here are the 10 huge revelations
1:44
from Star Trek Khan. Number 10. The true nature of Marla MacGyver's death
1:52
Lieutenant Marta MacGyvers was introduced in Space Seed, serving aboard the Enterprise as an historian
1:58
She was assigned to join the away mission to the SS Botany Bay
2:02
though the audience is quickly shown that Captain Kirk does not know who she is
2:08
By the events of The Wrath of Khan, MacGyvers had been given an off-screen death
2:14
Actress Madeline Rue was unable to return as she suffered from multiple sclerosis
2:19
Kan's tragedy was then fuelled by his grief. He hated Kirk, blaming him for the death of his
2:26
beloved wife. Kan adds a greater depth to this death. Yes, she did fall victim to the seti eels
2:35
becoming infected with their larvae while relaxing in a natural hot spring
2:40
The series demonstrates that infection is always fatal, more on this later
2:46
though MacGyver's was pregnant at the time. Rather than lose both mother and child
2:53
Khan agrees to sacrifice Marla so that their baby can be delivered. This occurs years before
2:59
the Reliant arrives in orbit over the planet, during which time Khan helps raise their daughter
3:06
Kali. MacGyver's death is one of the thousand paper cuts that erodes Khan's sanity over the
3:12
years. While Kirk bore no direct responsibility for her fate, Khan's rage and grief causes him
3:20
to group all of his ills together, giving them the form of James Tiberius Kirk. MacGyver's death
3:29
was a tragedy, though the fallout from her death was a mixture of misplaced blame and unfortunate
3:36
coincidences. Number nine, Khan wasn't always a beloved leader. In both Space Seed and the Wrath
3:45
of Khan, the fearless leader boasts that the men and women who follow him had sworn to live and die
3:52
under his command centuries earlier. Their loyalty seems absolute, endless and without question
3:58
For Chekhov and Tyrell, they discovered this quickly, while the crew of the Enterprise found
4:04
similar responses. However, while on SETI Alpha 5, Khan quickly found his authority being challenged
4:13
First was an augment named Hugo, caught stirring some of the followers into questioning Khan's
4:18
authority. He wondered aloud how they could have twice found themselves exiled, once from Earth
4:26
then later from the Enterprise. For this, he blamed Khan's lack of leadership
4:32
Hugo was quickly silenced, banished by Khan, but then murdered by Ivan
4:38
Ivan himself seemed loyal to a fault until Khan began to show, in his opinion, weakness
4:46
When presented with the opportunity to take dominion over another group of survivors on the planet
4:52
Khan instead chose to ally with them, something Ivan found unforgivable. Ivan was not alone, though he was in the minority
5:02
He openly challenged the man and lost, was banished for five years, then returned with support during the attempt to escape off-world
5:12
Though Ivan overplayed his hand, he certainly wasn't alone. Khan may have been telling the truth about that loyalty, but it seems that no loyalty is ever absolute
5:25
Number 8. Chekhov has more strength than we ever knew. Commander Pavel Chekhov was a singular officer by the wrath of Cannes
5:35
While behind the scenes the story of Walter Koenig accidental exchange with Ricardo Montalb Cannes is now legendary The audio drama further models this already puzzling piece of canon
5:49
Nicholas Meyer has long since joked that Chekhov was indeed on the Enterprise in Space Seed
5:56
and had held Cannes up while waiting for the bathroom. This, he contends, would make anyone memorable
6:02
By the time Chekhov had been promoted to First Officer of the Reliant
6:07
He had clearly taken some incredible strength tests, excelling in all of them
6:12
He remains, to date, the only person to ever survive infection by a seti eel
6:20
Star Trek Khan establishes that infection is always fatal, with several of Khan's people, genetically engineered to be stronger than average humans
6:31
falling victim to these parasites. Lieutenant MacGyver's, with no such augmentation to even give her a hope, never stood a chance
6:40
When Chekhov and Tyrell unwittingly beam into Khan's lair, they are deliberately infected with these larvae
6:47
making them susceptible to suggestion, leading to their betrayal of their comrades
6:53
While Tyrell fights back, turning his phaser on himself rather than Kirk
6:58
Chekhov is seemingly saved by the larva's self-sacrifice. With no apparent explanation
7:05
that particular larva chooses to leave his body, saving him from certain death. While this is good
7:12
for fans of Walter Koenig and Chekhov, it does leave us scratching our heads as to the altruistic
7:19
nature of that eel. Number 7. The cause of Seti Alpha 6's explosion. Among the many things
7:28
that Khan blames James Kirk for is the hellish nature of his new home. While SETI Alpha 5 was
7:35
described as habitable, although a bit savage, somewhat inhospitable by Spock in 2261, it still
7:43
offered Khan and his people hope. Six months after their arrival, SETI Alpha 6 exploded
7:50
changing the orbit of SETI Alpha 5. This laid waste to the planet's surface, forcing the
7:56
survivors underground. The explosion of the planet was foreseen, but was still expected to take
8:02
centuries. Ursula, the chief of medicine for the colony, was aware of that planet's instability
8:08
but was initially unconcerned about an explosion that she would never live to see. While the
8:14
question of how the Reliant failed to notice a missing planet in the Wrath of Khan doesn't
8:20
receive an answer, the cause for said missing planet is revealed. The Elborians, another group
8:28
that crash lands on SETI Alpha 5, are responsible for Six's destruction. Their ship was damaged in
8:35
transit, requiring them to find an emergency landing zone. The type of engine that they used
8:42
could devastate matter, though they couldn't jettison it for fear of becoming stranded in
8:47
deep space. Left with little options, they allowed their propulsion system to destroy
8:52
six, which they knew was uninhabited. Their ship crash lands on five, which in turn leads to several
8:59
years of tension and secrets between them and Khan's group. 6. Did Kirk Really Know? The wraparound story for Star Trek Khan focuses on Dr. Rosalind Lear
9:12
a researcher who petitions Starfleet to allow her to travel to SETI Alpha 5
9:17
She contends that Kirk, recently deceased by this point, marooned Khan on the planet while in full possession of the knowledge that SETI Alpha 6 was unstable
9:28
While we just previously discussed the exact cause for why 6 exploded when it did
9:34
Lear's investigation raises the question, did the Enterprise conduct an adequate scan of the system before depositing Khan there
9:43
Captain Sulu is incensed at the mere suggestion that Kirk knowingly condemned these people to suffering
9:51
though even he concedes that it would be better to be sure
9:55
Kirk's logs, as indeed all deceased captain's logs, were classified upon his death
10:01
Lear's research reveals that Kirk didn't know, nor could he have known, that Six would explode
10:08
when it did. While the Enterprise did detect anomalies within the core of Six, they weren't
10:15
enough to disqualify the system from colonization at that point. It was little surprise to the
10:21
audience that Kirk wasn't aware of what would happen to Khan and his people, but the question
10:26
is given greater depth when one considers Kirk never did bother to check on Khan, nor did Starfleet
10:33
In fact, the series only highlights how forgotten they truly were. With all of the information
10:41
sitting in its history banks, the Reliant still failed to notice a missing planet
10:47
nor was there any flag on the SETI Alpha system at all. Kirk may not have been responsible for
10:54
Khan's fate, but there is still plenty of blame to pass around
10:59
5. Sulu's Anger But Dedication to Duty Captain Hikaru Sulu suffered at the hands of Khan Noonien Singh twice. From his point of view
11:11
Khan's death was no tragedy, nor had he any real interest in exploring what drove the man
11:18
who tried to kill him Sulu was the one tasked with shunting the Enterprise up to maximum speed after Spock sacrifice and he was present at the funeral of that great man So when Dr Lear petitions
11:33
Starfleet to declassify Kirk's logs with the aim of proving the man guilty of condemning Khan
11:40
Sulu is enraged. The last thing that he has any interest in doing is vindicating the madman
11:46
who killed so many of his colleagues. While Sulu's anger is evident throughout his appearances in
11:54
Star Trek Khan, so too is his sense of duty and the difference between right and wrong
12:01
He may have agreed to take Lear to Seti Alpha 5 to disprove her theory, but he does take her
12:08
He volunteers the Excelsior for the mission, even staying for longer than a ship might normally
12:14
remain in orbit of a dead planet. He comes into mild conflict with Ensign Tuvok over Lear's
12:21
investigation, ordering the young Vulcan to keep tabs on her. Clearly, he is not happy about any of
12:28
this, but as shown, he allows Lear to complete her work, no matter the personal cost. He may be human
12:36
but Hikaru Sulu remains a stalwart Starfleet officer. 4. Joachim's Blind Loyalty
12:45
Judson Scott may not have received on-screen credit for his role as Joachim
12:51
Khan's right-hand man in Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan, but he was a stark presence on both SETI Alpha 5 and the USS Reliant
13:01
His death genuinely moved the audience, while also displaying his loyalty to Khan right to the very end
13:08
There is an eased and relaxed nature, almost smug, in the way he acts in the film
13:15
In Star Trek Khan, Joachim is a much younger man, barely older than his teens
13:21
His father, Joachim, is killed soon after their arrival on the planet, leaving the young man an orphan
13:28
Khan cares for him, shows him favour, and even gives him a symbol of strength, his own dagger
13:36
Joachim's mother, deceased before the series begins, is revealed not to have been augmented in any way
13:43
This leaves the young man in an in-between state, a child of two worlds
13:48
while also leaving him open to ostracisation from the other youths in the camp
13:53
Khan's confidence in him elevates his position, resulting in not only his loyalty
13:58
but also helps to bring him into good stead with Erika, one of the young women present
14:03
Joachim displays his loyalty time and time again, not least in his utter lack of hesitation
14:09
when Khan orders him to disembark the venture, their one attempt at an escape from the planet
14:16
Khan nominates him to lead in his stead, only to take this mantle back
14:21
Joachim loves Cannes like a father, ready to say yes in any situation
14:26
though not above asking questions when needed. He obeys his orders, but in both the audio drama and the film
14:33
it is little surprise that he offers Cannes the chance to simply leave it all behind
14:38
His loyalty may cost him his life, but it was always Cannes to spend
14:44
Number three, they weren't alone on Seti Alpha 5. When Khan, MacGyvers and the rest of the crew of the Botany Bay were deposited on Seti Alpha 5
14:54
they were alone, save for the local wildlife. While that came with its own set of challenges
15:00
the destruction of Seti Alpha 6 offered both an ecological disaster and a meeting of minds with a
15:06
new group. The Elborians, a telepathic race, crashed on Seti Alpha 5, having inadvertently
15:13
caused the destruction of the other planet. Delmonde, their leader, quickly established
15:18
contact with Khan, telepathically ensuring that the Augment knew they meant no harm
15:24
but were certainly capable of it. The Elborians had been chased from their own world in a similar
15:31
fashion to Khan and his people. They were searching for like-minded people, though they were left
15:37
wanting. They were linked to each other in what they called a pandem, a hive mind of individuals
15:44
Through this, they shared thoughts, hopes, fears, joy, and pain. Delmonda and Cannes struggled to
15:52
meet each other on the same playing field, the former seeking peaceful coexistence, while the
15:57
latter sought to dominate. Had Cannes allowed himself to trust, there may have been a chance
16:03
for a functioning colony, or even a genuine attempt at salvation. Instead, Khan elects to
16:10
deceive Dalmanda at almost every turn, up to and including the attempted rescue mission and escape
16:18
The Elborians, in their guilt for SETI-5's situation, pledge to create a craft capable of
16:25
helping four individuals get off-world, then begin a search for a rescue mission
16:31
Khan co-opts this plan intent only on saving his daughter Callie and himself
16:38
Khan may once have had capacity to think of the greater good but his treatment of Delmanda and
16:44
the Elborians overall proved just how far he had fallen by that time. Number two Ivan the Terrible
16:53
At the time of their arrival on Seti Alpha 5 Khan was supported by his chief lieutenant Ivan
17:00
Ivan is voiced by Maurice Sterling who previously appeared in the Enterprise episode Exile as Tarkin From the start Ivan is single in both his ferocity and intent
17:14
He sees all augments as rightful leaders in any situation, with Seti Alpha 5 being no exception
17:21
He is quick to murder Hugo for speaking against Khan, and to protect Khan whenever needed
17:26
He is absolute in his hatred of the Elborians, killing one simply because he could
17:33
Though this causes the cracks between Khan and he to shatter, he is unrepentant
17:38
He is absolutely loyal to augmented superiority. Once Khan begins to weaken, in his eyes, that means Khan has no more right to lead them
17:50
Another cause for their rift is his aversion to Lieutenant MacGyver's. Her status as human, unaugmented, sickens him. Taking any kind of direction from her
18:02
even when her expertise can help the colony, is too much to bear. Her attempts to stand her ground
18:08
with him go nowhere, and by the time of his exile, there is only hatred on his part
18:15
Ivan is a symbol of all that humanity fears about augments. He truly believes in their position as
18:22
rulers and is committed to eventually breeding humanity out. On SETI Alpha 5, he finds a new
18:29
planet to conquer, though his narrow vision leads him to his final conflict. His death at Khan's
18:36
hand only serves to solidify Khan's position with the remaining augments. In the end, Ivan may be
18:44
responsible for the madness that engulfs some of those survivors and is directly responsible for at
18:51
least some of the discontent between the Augments and the Elborians. Number one, the bloodline carries
18:59
on. The biggest revelation from Star Trek Khan is, of course, the existence of Kali Noonien Singh
19:07
the daughter of Khan and Marla MacGyvers. First introduced under the guise of Dr. Rosalind Lear
19:14
her seemingly single-minded focus of blaming James Kirk morphs as the season continues
19:21
Though a resolute character, she is difficult to root for initially, doing little to endear herself to those around her, as we discover that it's very much in keeping with her true mission, which is to discover why her father never came to find her and spent his energies on revenge
19:40
The realisation that Khan believed her dead, killed in an explosion that seemingly destroyed her and the venture, allows her a measure of peace
19:51
Yes, her father spent his final days hunting Kirk to avenge himself upon him, but this was done in ignorance of her survival
19:59
He hadn't abandoned her, he was grieving her. While Lear finds peace with this, Tuvok, who had attempted to understand her, Kan and the mission, came to see the impossible position her augmented genes would put her in
20:15
The treatment and prejudice against augmented humans continues to be a theme that Star Trek explores, here presented through the lens of the first augmented characters introduced in the original series
20:28
While Star Trek Khan opens some doors for stories as yet untold, it also carefully treads the line of giving Khan Noonien Singh and his followers greater depth without absolving them of their sins
20:44
It may be a secret that many of those in Starfleet are unaware of, but it is a tale worth telling after all
20:50
