okay
0:32
all right hey sorry we disconnected there I knew that was probably going to
0:41
happen all right if you're just joining back on the live stream I this is my first time doing a live stream and I
0:47
wanted to figure out and test everything fortunately I had Brandon from white pepper Farms if
0:56
you're not following that channel he is awesome in the freeze Dr space right now
1:01
we've been chatting a lot back and forth unfortunately he told me that uh the
1:07
chat really wasn't working but then it caught up to him so if you are just now joining thank you for re joining back
1:14
this is a live stream of the freeze dried business Channel we're talking everything about freeze drying is freeze
1:19
drying as a business the reason I wanted to do this live stream is because I wanted to
1:25
provide you access to myself to ask questions and I do have have Consulting
1:31
sessions I have things that I that I offer people if you want to ask specific questions about your business but I also
1:36
want to give that as well um I'm a real person I live in boy Idaho boy State
1:44
Broncos and if you are interested in starting a freeze drying business or you
1:50
have a freeze drying business and you just have questions I'm a you know I'm a business owner myself I've owned my
1:55
business it's called freeze dry Depot I've owned my business for over four years I started it back in the pandemic
2:02
that's what the previous live stream was about too is I was talking about my
2:07
story with my freeze dry business probably to summarize quicker
2:13
than what you prob probably were listening to is really short summary my
2:19
wife lost her job I needed to find supplemental income I had a friend whose
2:24
wife worked with my wife in medical and he had some co-workers in this fire
2:32
department that had freeze dryers but they were using it for food prep and
2:39
sorry I keep swalling but my mouth is really dry I need water but uh uh they were doing food prep for you know uh
2:46
prepping for uh disasters just like the pandemic obviously that was good timing uh but also just for food
2:54
preservation one of those people mentioned to him that there's people selling freeze-dried candy like they're
3:00
they're freeze drying candy and then selling it on online places like Etsy
3:06
Facebook Marketplace things like that so we were talking about what to do as a side business to supplement
3:13
income and while we were working out together in his garage I was like oh
3:18
well you know he does some finished carpentry work so we were exploring that like how do we get some jobs through that I actually started working for Papa
3:25
John's doing pizza delivery uh I had done that in the past I actually made really good money and it's kind of like
3:32
mindless work you know it's it's kind of like being an Uber driver you you're just like hey I just drive in my car
3:38
listen to music chill talk to different people I'm a pretty social guy so it was
3:44
actually a really good gig and it's kind of that competitiveness like if you've ever done delivery driving or anything
3:51
like that in the service side it's kind of like this really like hustle mentality because you want to get the
3:59
deliveries to someone just in case you're wondering and you purchased from someone buying Pizza um you know those
4:05
delivary drivers they they want to maximize as much time in the peak hours
4:11
as possible to deliver pizzas because that's when you make all your money so between 5: pm and 7:30 p.m. is really
4:18
like peak times and so if you could deliver let's say four to six deliveries
4:25
an hour I mean that's pretty good because on average you're you know maybe you're making five five bucks per per uh
4:33
delivery so that's you know that's 30 bucks an hour if you're delivering six pizzas plus your plus your hourly rate
4:41
so you're kind of you're you're making better money on that time so anyway I was doing that it's kind of a side
4:48
tangent but that was what I was doing and then he mentioned that people were selling freeze-dried candy on Etsy and given my kind of background and
4:54
advertising that's what I've been my whole doing my whole career um I was like oh man like I'm seeing a lot I'm
5:00
seeing like H I never even heard of this I actually ordered from someone who had
5:05
an Etsy store you can look this up today Susie's Pantry she had sold like eight
5:12
or 10,000 orders because on Etsy on the Etsy store you can see someone's orders
5:19
uh on there and I was like 8,000 10,000 orders now I think how they track that is more
5:25
of the individual item by the way if you're watching this live stream just to before I finish on the su's pantry thing
5:32
if you want to chat with me uh it's open to anybody so if if you want to send me
5:39
a message I'm looking at it right here and once that message comes in I'm happy
5:44
to answer them for you if you've got questions about what freeze dryers to buy if youve got questions about things
5:50
that are not getting answered or you're seeing on these I'm on by the way I'm on
5:56
these Facebook groups just as much as everybody else and there's a lot of noise there so this is your opportunity
6:04
to talk to me directly and I can help kind of filter out that noise and answer your question based on my experience and
6:12
I'm kind of giveing you my experience my credentials is I have a freeze dry business I'm telling the origin story of
6:17
this so anyway I saw an opportunity ordered from Susie's Pantry it's a shop
6:22
on Etsy I got ice cream freeze-dried ice cream I got freeze dried Skittles I was
6:28
like man this is fantastic so I saw an opportunity and we purchased
6:34
a freeze dryer and around maybe it was like July of 2020 Harvest Right was accelerating in
6:42
their business and they still are they were the only freeze dryer in town and
6:48
that was the only way to start a business because you had to have a freeze dryer but they were 12 weeks out from you getting your freeze dryer and
6:55
you had to pay up front so we had to front out that large freeze dryer that that was the biggest size that they
7:01
had that's why also I partnered up with my friend because you know 4500 bucks
7:07
was kind of expensive at the time so I we both split the cost bought bags
7:13
bought St we tried to figure out our logo things like that and we bought the freeze dryer it delivered to us around
7:20
October in that time frame we figured out our brand name which was freeze dry Depot um also we figured out our bags
7:28
and packaging we started testing different things we knew we wanted to do Skittles we knew also we wanted to try
7:34
ice cream and fruit so that was our kind of our three categories week after Thanksgiving we
7:41
launched our business great timing by the way um because it led into the holidays we really kind of focused our
7:47
marketing on the Elf on the Shelf um type of feature so the elf would bring
7:53
North Pole treats you know Freez dried candy things like that that you go and find the from the North Pole we made
8:00
back our our total investment from the free large freeze dryer to the bags the
8:05
insurance the LLC registration um all the products and everything like that that we bought 7500
8:13
bucks I'm actually going to share that um if you are on this live stream and
8:19
you're able to chat at or message me um let me know if
8:25
you want to know kind of what my startup cost was because I have all that ACC archived uh and $7,500 was what we
8:34
invested in that's everything to kind of launch the business officially um and also to be able to
8:41
scale um I'll tell you this and and and some of you who have started a freeze drying business this is what gets you
8:49
excited about it and it's what a lot of people don't understand about the freeze drying business is it's pretty minimal
8:54
cost to get into it and also see Su and a lot of people see success may not be
8:59
as much money as I made in the amount of time because it's been four years A lot of people are doing it
9:05
now I made back that $7,500 in four weeks and that really kind of just like
9:14
made the the wheels turn in terms of our entrepreneurial mindset so when you make
9:20
$7,500 in four weeks with a business that you had no idea about but you see
9:25
something that PE that's catching on it's natural for you to say let's go for it so after that came about we kind of
9:33
looked at our finances we took basically all the budget and we paid cash for um
9:40
two more freeze dryers that's what we did in that time frame while we were waiting 12 more weeks for those freeze
9:47
dryers to arrive we were signing on new wholesale accounts we knew we had to get
9:52
into commercial kitchen so we kind of talked to our local health authority that all that type of thing um
10:00
everyone hey first live stream 13 people awesome thank you for joining me my
10:07
name's David I'm Freeze Drive business owner I'm also the host of the freeze Drive business Channel I started this
10:12
channel to dra to talk to you specifically I want to give back I want to talk to you about your business if
10:18
you have questions I'm hoping that the chat is available I do know that uh it's
10:25
been a little bit slow for people to actually send a chat over
10:30
so bear in mind that I'm trying to work on this live stream and I want to make sure that the
10:36
chat is working and if it's not I'm going to figure out some other way but um where was I 2021 so 2020 made
10:47
back our freeze dryer made back all of our investment 2021 bought two more freeze dryers got them around March
10:54
meanwhile we were building out different relationships with different wholesale people
11:01
by the end of 2021 kind of the Fall heading into our second holiday period
11:06
we had seven freeze dryers we had a commercial kitchen it was very
11:12
busy and we also I my first kid was born uh
11:18
in October 2020 my second kid we ended up getting pregnant around 20 late
11:25
2021 um and anyway things got busy my business partner and I he also has a
11:32
small kid and life just got busy ended up selling a couple of freeze dryers went down about three freeze dryers and
11:39
he parted ways I took a Hiatus for my business from about February 20122 all
11:46
the way through the summer had people asking me you know why we stopped maybe like can we start back up again um and
11:54
so I asked my buddy I'm like you know hey is it okay if I continue doing this um um just because I enjoyed it and one
12:02
of the things that I I recognized early on in starting this business is why why
12:08
I started this channel is in July this this coming month July 29th or ju July
12:16
27th was my first video that I ever posted on this channel and I posted about doing High CH had no idea what I
12:23
was doing but I knew I wanted to give people a video sense of how to run a
12:29
freeze drying business or actually just a day in the life so I started the channel and that actually kind of revigor me to continue my freeze drying
12:36
business because I was like hey you know I enjoy making videos while also I'm
12:41
freeze drying candy freeze drying ice cream freeze drying fruit building relationships and I've learned it all
12:47
along the way and I'm still to this day loving the freeze-dried
12:53
industry and I'm probably the one person on a lot of these forums that are like
12:58
this is just the tip of the iceberg a lot of people if you're watching this right now and you're like should I start
13:04
a business man it looks like everyone's selling freeze-dried candy well yeah I mean a lot of people are I knew that
13:09
that was going to happen and but that that's proof of concept though like now
13:15
we have this huge industry and it's not even saturated I mean that means that everyone's had their fill of candy
13:21
that's not true either so um also you've seen a lot of people use um Power
13:29
powders so uh with freeze drying your fruit can become a powder very easily
13:34
with freeze drying candy can be crushed now and you could have a flavored type of candy of something uh people are
13:42
using it for ice cream toppings all that type of stuff so the evolution of freeze
13:47
drying in terms of creativeness for you to be an entrepreneur is wide open right now it's kind of the Wild West
13:55
still which is awesome but it is an opport for you and that's why I started
14:01
this channel thanks for joining me if you're on if you're on the live stream right now this is my first ever live
14:07
stream I'm planning on doing more of these I was actually sitting my desk right now um I actually have my work
14:14
computer on the other side and um yeah I I I wanted to hop on because
14:22
I'm like you know sometimes I get as a Creator I don't if you're if you don't if you don't have a YouTube channel or
14:28
you don't know somebody as YouTu YouTube channel either you're passionate about it or not some people have been in it a
14:33
long time you know it's it's there's all you develop this pressure to like release a video all the time it just
14:40
what it is I think what's happening more so now with with video and with the with
14:46
all of our social media platforms is people want to be more real and authentic and just hop on a live
14:51
stream and I've done some povs like point of views videos but you know I'm
14:59
just not a ve I'm not a good video editor so I wanted to hop on to this live stream because I'm like this is more me I can talk to you I've got my
15:06
microphone I've got my webcam and you can ask questions to me this is what I like and so that's what
15:13
I'm going to try to do more if you're on this live stream um I'd I don't know have any I
15:21
don't have any way to know whether the chat function is working um but it is open for you to
15:29
send a message to me right now I can't see anything it says something went wrong with the chat so I can't see
15:37
anything with that um something you could
15:44
do for me is you could email me actually
15:49
uh email me at David Freez depot.com if
15:54
you're on this live stream that's Again David at Freez dried Depot
16:00
if you want to email me and just let me know if you are seeing the chat and if you
16:07
have sent chats over that would be great because I'll probably end this live stream if I can't chat with you all and
16:13
I'm not resp and it's not showing anything um it shows a monkey holding a
16:21
hammer and it shows a YouTube logo and then
16:26
uh it says something went wrong YouTube refused to connect that's
16:33
what it's showing so anyways
16:39
um thank you all for joining this live stream again if you're you're on this
16:45
live stream I just asked if you would email me David freey depo.com to let me
16:51
know if you're able to send a chat if you've already submitted one that would be great to know too um this is what
16:57
this live stream is about I want to be able to see uh hear from you I want you
17:02
to talk to me ask me questions bounce ideas off one of the things that I
17:08
wanted to discuss on this channel too for this live stream is it's you know a
17:14
lot of time this is a great advice that I got I I studied business
17:20
entrepreneurship actually at boy State University home of the blue Turf if you're ever ever familiar with college
17:27
football I started entrepreneur management and one of the first things
17:32
that I heard that I if I took anything from that class it was entrepreneurship
17:37
101 Professor I can't believe I remember this but his name was Jeff
17:43
sugar and you know imagine him being in this class of all these freshmen you
17:49
know 19 18 19 year olds all inspiring to be
17:55
entrepreneurs and he said something to me he said um
18:02
okay somebody actually just said go to live stream and see the
18:09
chat oh gotcha here we
18:17
go hey I see the chat now awesome
18:24
okay yep somebody just told me hey you know what just uh go to this live stream so I'm gonna I I
18:32
can now see all of your chats for some reason
18:38
um what was happening is on my view here like in my YouTube
18:44
studio um I'm not seeing the chat so I'm gonna have two different types of
18:49
windows open now um so that I can see all your chat so hey it only took me
18:55
what um 17 minutes figure this
19:00
out all right so one second
19:09
here yeah
19:15
um yeah everyone's emailing me hey go to the go to the live stream
19:20
[Laughter] please all right
19:30
I've got four minutes just stopping by thanks white pepper Farms that's the last one I saw okay yep seeing a bunch
19:38
of seeing a bunch of chats let's see here hey David it's Ryan from freeze
19:46
frenzy hope you're having a good time awesome to see you um
19:53
cringy I can't uh can't probably say on YouTube the the word for want for your
19:59
handle but uh awesome to see you uh z uh R now okay you said uh which
20:08
freeze dryer would you recommend for an entrylevel commercial freeze dryer other than Harvest Right
20:14
HRC great question so if you are on this stream awesome to to see you um thank
20:22
you for joining this is exactly what I wanted to talk about too is if you have questions I'm going to try to answer
20:28
these and I'm I'm actually going to go beyond this so I'm going to go all the way till 3:15 mountain time okay so I'm going to
20:35
go for another 20 minutes and try to answer all these questions to answer your questions about commercial freeze
20:41
dryers HRC 100 is less than 10,000 bucks I can't honestly recommend another
20:46
commercial freeze dryer that can do 100 pounds because I I do think that you'll make up
20:54
the money with a commercial freeze dryer later on but for right now if you're not ready to
21:02
invest in a $150,000 freeze dryer then I think the HRC 100 is going to be the
21:07
best fit and I also think you gotta think about this too even myself I'm looking at
21:13
purchasing an HRC 100 and so you got to look at the resale value too A lot of
21:19
people can probably want to buy that HRC 100 from you so for me I like the HRC
21:25
100 I'm not sponsored by Harvest Right an affiliate of them meaning like I'm
21:31
only Affiliates for people that I would recommend I'm also an affiliate of blue Alpine stay fresh um just because I'm
21:39
I'm running a Channel about freeze drying as a business so I want to be able to recommend freeze dryers that are
21:44
going to do the best and perform for you as a business and right now Harvest
21:50
Right has the XL Harvest has the HRC 100 for the best affordable price for what you're going to do with it I know
21:57
they've got different types of issues I've got one freeze dryer that's just like anybody else who has freeze issues
22:04
with Harvest but I also have three other ones that have done great so that's my
22:10
answer to you now if you want to look at a commercial grade freeze dryer I would suggest looking at Parker freeze dry you
22:17
can also look at a company that I just talked to I'm actually going to be speaking I'm going to be releasing the
22:23
podcast episode It's called Tech Source systems and I can get you in contact
22:29
with the the person that I interviewed and talked to really knowledgeable guy
22:35
so if you want to email me um I've got links to that in my channel links so let
22:41
me know about that I hope that answers that Meredith welcome I hope you're still on
22:46
here um Marth you said I don't want to sell candy only fruits vegetables and Exotics like finger limes other types of
22:54
fruits do you think it's feasible to make a decent income without selling candy meals
22:59
yes it is it's competitive in fruit in fact I did a podcast interview with Yo's
23:06
froo bites if you haven't checked out my podcast it's called frozen assets I'm focusing on
23:12
entrepreneurs people in the freeze draing space it's on a playlist on my channel hasal Noah is the owner of Yo's
23:19
fro vites he takes frozen yogurt makes them into Swirls and then he freeze
23:25
dries them one of the things that he said um when we were talking is he showed me
23:31
not in the interview but when I wasn't recording he showed me his house and he
23:36
showed me probably 40 different freeze-dried fruit companies that he's purchased fruit from so it's very
23:43
competitive but um one of the things that I've been wanting to do is I've
23:48
been wanting to be the Idaho freeze-dried fruit go-to company that's
23:54
kind of if I was going to pursue my business a little bit more heavy which right now I'm just super super busy
24:00
that's what I want to do so I'd encourage you to do that you know you don't have to um go into meals you don't
24:05
have to go into candy um something that you could explore also is if you
24:12
like uh vegetables fruits and Exotics things like that try working with those
24:17
types of things and what could what applications could they do for powders
24:23
because with freeze drying you're taking all the water out and as you know it come becomes crunchy well also becomes
24:30
like a powder if you crunch it down so try to experiment with different recipes
24:35
to coat something else in that flavor um maybe it's something to make a
24:41
smoothie out of maybe it's something to add have as additives maybe you can find
24:46
a bakery or something like that where it's like that's maybe your core audience is selling to people who want
24:52
to buy um something in bulk from you um so
24:58
you know people who sell FL and sugars and Frost and make frostings things like that maybe that's maybe your customer
25:04
you know so I would explore that hope that's helping I'm gonna go to the very bottom and see what people are saying
25:10
here okay awesome um I'm I'm going to the last couple of
25:18
um questions here um by the way I'm
25:24
just I'm making sure I'm still doing this live
25:30
stream yeah looks like I am um yeah awesome
25:38
okay yeah awesome all right now I've got my actual live
25:44
stream and I've got the chat open
25:50
cool okay so some of the latest Z are now awesome glad there is
25:57
uh cringy uh you're there's many different types of settings depending on what you're
26:03
doing um oh yeah you guys are talking about differences in in recipes yeah yeah
26:10
there are um in fact I have the stay fresh freeze dryer and reason I bought that last year
26:18
around this time is I wanted to have a different freeze dryer I've had Harvest Right I recommend Harvest Right but stay
26:25
fresh is new I'm also working with blue to hopefully to get um one of their freeze dryers for a couple months they
26:33
live in Idaho he wanted the owner Cory if you haven't checked out that podcast
26:38
he wanted to uh send me one just because he's like hey you know test it out um
26:43
you know see what it's like all freeze dryers are going to act different it brings up a good point too think about
26:50
what you're purchasing I mean right now Harvest Right is the one who produced a
26:57
freeze dryer for all of us to own in our home they did not build the freeze dryer
27:03
for businesses for a business to be started it happened that that's something that's booming that's why I
27:10
started this channel that's why I started my business but they didn't build the freeze dryer for us to be
27:16
running at 247 365 days a year that's what the commercial grade freeze dryer
27:21
companies designed Theirs to do so you have to kind of look at all these
27:27
different freeze dri S I kind of go off on these tangents obviously I was talking about the safe fresh now I'm
27:32
talking about my philosophy and all these things but that's what these live streams are for right but think about that when you're
27:40
assessing and re and hearing all the noise it's not about
27:46
um yeah these freeze dryers can break down but think about it I mean they like
27:52
these freeze dryers are meant for food preservation home use um and now we're
27:57
all using using them us meaning people who are running a start a business are using them to run them non-stop so we
28:03
have to kind of take it with a grain of salt now given that um I've really liked my stay fresh freeze dryer it hasn't had
28:11
uh any vacuum error issues but again it's been only been a year old I didn't have vacuum issues with my Harvest rats
28:18
um probably for at least well my my stepchild Harvest Right my one uh I had
28:25
it didn't that didn't happen for about a year and a half or so so but you know if I downloaded the data I probably had you
28:32
know 60 to 100 Cycles going through that um Fruit
28:38
Friends oh Meredith okay awesome yeah thanks for staying on here
28:44
and um and and those and staying on to the live stream if you're just joining
28:50
this live stream my name's David I'm the host of the freeze dry business Channel I also have a business called freeze dry
28:56
Depot I want to be more accessible to all of you so I'm starting these live streams I was literally like sitting at
29:03
my desk right here and I was like I should just hop on the live stream I should just hop on here talk to people
29:09
give you an opportunity to ask me questions um you know I I'm a I have a
29:15
lot of things going on if you don't know my background you watch my videos I've got a freeze-dried business freeze-dried
29:21
Depot I probably spend 12 12 or 15 hours a week doing that business because got
29:28
eight different wholesale clients um I'm using it for this channel things like that I've also got this
29:35
channel if you don't if you don't have a YouTube channel if you don't have any
29:40
like social media presence that you're actively doing um or you don't know somebody who has a YouTube channel I'll
29:47
tell you this after two years of running this it's another type of like side job now I love this I actually want to go
29:55
full-time with this uh YouTube channel by the end of this year that's my goal
30:01
um and it's all G to be thanks to you guys who are watching this um sticking with me watching my videos um clicking
30:07
on the affiliate links for commissions and things like that um I really appreciate that um because I'm very
30:14
passionate about the freeze dry industry I've done advertising and marketing for my entire career and I want there's
30:22
there's just nobody connecting the freeze dried industry at all right now there's no magazine there there's
30:30
homesteading there are uh people doing doing it for their own businesses but
30:36
I'm just trying to connect you all like I've I've now I now probably have on my
30:41
on my fingers now I now know about 7 to eight different freeze dryers companies that I didn't know about when I started
30:47
this Channel all I knew about was Harvest Right um if you've paid attention to my
30:52
my podcast I've been interviewing these entrepreneurs you know I I want to
30:58
basically be a publisher for the freeze drying industry I want to be able to go to
31:04
shows so that I can find these different companies feature them give you
31:10
inspiration for being an entrepreneur um news updates recalls all that type of stuff
31:17
that's what I want to do um went off a little tangent on that one how many machines do you have currently uh I have
31:25
four four machines three Harvest Right large freeze dryers and one stay fresh
31:31
the stay fresh I have the the original that they had because they came out with another larger
31:38
one um but I am looking at Blue Alpine as well blue Alpine
31:46
um has said that they might uh let me have one for a couple months so I can
31:51
test it out Ryan says how do I Branch out into wholesale what is the typical markdown
31:57
for customers who buy wholesale um great question
32:03
um it's being a sales a sales professional I would go to your local
32:09
area and first first thing for wholesale is I'd probably go
32:15
into um like build like a PDF or a work go into like Google
32:21
Docs and kind of like build a table or a line sheet of what type of products
32:27
you're going to offer wholesale people one thing that people get probably caught up on and I thought that I had to
32:33
do was I had to list out all of my SKS all of my information like all the products you don't have to do that for
32:39
wholesale you could say hey here's all of my products that um I can
32:45
do uh fairly easily let's say or here's my best uh you know margins so maybe
32:51
that's what you want to offer for wholesale so then once you have that
32:56
sheet because you want to be prepared is I would start talking to like local
33:02
relationships um and hight traffic areas so look at small boutiques that feature
33:08
local businesses already so if you've got that type of store that's like let's
33:13
say you're in IA or you're in Texas and they feature Texas local things then
33:19
that's kind of a good probably place to be um you and then so I would look at
33:24
that other wholesale that you could look at is um obviously other stores gas
33:30
stations um you could look at um maybe event type of places so people that have
33:37
concerts um places that um you know I'm thinking of like you know horse tracks
33:43
uh casinos um you know just stuff like that like think of the hight traffic areas where people are going to consume
33:50
stuff um that's where you want to look what's the typ what's the typical
33:56
markdown for customers who buy wholesale um typically what you're seeing you're
34:03
going to see is um wholesale people want to see anything between 40 and 50% markup like meaning they want to mark up
34:10
your product 40 50% so they're going to ask for 40 to 50% discount on your
34:18
product um I would actually ask them I would ask the people that you're looking at for wholesale and say you know hey
34:24
what what do what are your what are your wholesale like vendors right now pay or
34:30
discount their product and and then you can kind of know where you're branching off instead
34:35
of giving the uh giving it away right away of what your discounts going to
34:40
be uh just ask them you know what they currently
34:47
do Meredith says I'm on the recipe section of your website but I can't see any recipes only category descriptions
34:53
is their recipe book for sale working on that uh thanks Meredith I am working on that
35:02
um a resource right now I would do is um
35:07
if you're not following the YouTube channel it's called retired at 40 live life
35:13
simple I I've actually talked to Ryan uh you had a Brian there and uh he's got a
35:20
book recipe book that he's put himself into I don't know if I'm going to go down that path honestly I'm working on
35:26
kind of a different spin on it that I'm going to work on um it's going to be
35:32
more about like how to use a recipe for a business like how to make bulk of it
35:38
um that type of thing but great question I would suggest you going to um Amazon
35:43
or go directly to him although I love Amazon by the way um
35:51
they do take a huge cut from people who try to sell it who are local so if you can go direct with someone like live
35:58
life simple I would go to his YouTube channel his website and he's actually got a recipe membership website he's
36:04
also got some recipe books too okay going back up uh for some
36:11
people hopefully you're still on the live stream K's Corner how do you figure in pricing great
36:18
question I have a spreadsheet um that I released uh that I actually it's been
36:27
almost so you're in process if you're not an email sub a subscriber of my email list um I'm trying to be more
36:34
proactive in that because you know although YouTube is a great outlet for me you know I'm able to get in touch
36:41
with all of you if I have something to talk about via email a lot more quickly
36:47
so go to my YouTube channel and go to the the links um the channel links
36:54
you'll see my website but you'll also see it says the um the profits spreadsheet click on that
37:01
and subscribe and it'll send an automated email with my spreadsheet there in that spreadsheet you'll be able
37:08
to put in one your cost for your individual bags for a particular product
37:14
and then you'll also be able to put in any type of price that you want to sell it at so to answer your question you
37:21
don't really have to um you know know the price right now you could just kind of figure in like hey hey I want to test
37:28
this price out here's how much money I'd have left over for my other expenses or my
37:35
profit great question
37:46
right cringy says yeah I'm going back down to the bottom of the chat what would you recommend a HRC 100 or an
37:53
extra large for a starting point in commercial uh extra large
37:59
reason I'd say an extra large from Harvest Right is because it can do for
38:04
candy you know I I I like being conservative probably 30 to 40 pounds of
38:09
candy so in my extra large freeze dryer I can do about 10 to 12 pounds of
38:15
Skittles sorry in my large freeze dryer so think about that in the amount of time that's going to take you to do um
38:22
30 pounds of freeze-dried Skittles I can only do that um I have to do three
38:29
Cycles which means that's if let's say the average to do uh freeze dried
38:34
Skittles is let's say three hours in total that's nine hours that i' it it
38:41
take me to do equivalent of one cycle for the extra large the extra large
38:47
night is going to be nice for you because has good resell value and also
38:52
is going to allow you to scale um and not feel like you have to buy another freeze dryer so I hope that
38:58
answers your question HRC 100 um again under $110,000 but until
39:06
you have the demand I wouldn't buy
39:12
that let's see if you're just joining this live stream I'm going to be live
39:17
for um maybe another 10 minutes so um
39:22
I'll try to do another one of these this has been fun but if you're just joining thanks for joining um my name is David I'm the
39:30
host of the freeze Drive business Channel I'm just answering your questions so if you hit up the chat I'm trying to answer them um I finally
39:36
figured it out so I gotta figure out how to get the the chats in my studio area
39:42
so I don't have to have two browser windows open cringy you said I currently have
39:48
four mediums so it'll be a big jump for me four mediums yeah
39:55
um I don't know can you sell to two of those mediums for 2,000 bucks each
40:01
that's 4,000 then all all you have to come up with is 6,000 to get the HRC 100
40:07
um you know I would probably keep one of your mediums so that you can do some testing so you don't have to run a huge
40:13
cycle in the HRC 100 HRC 100 by the way too is going to be a larger uh
40:19
requirement for power um even though it's just the size of like a stand up freezer but you got
40:24
to have the power for it so think about about that Lee says I run a freeze dried pet
40:31
business in Wisconsin mainly selling wholesale I have an HRC I have an uh
40:37
Harvest medium Pro selling about 20 bags a week thinking about getting a seven Trace stay fresh soon yep perfectly fine
40:49
um 20 bags a week hey let's set a goal um let's try to get to
40:56
40 you can do it um you know some speaking of the seven tray stay
41:03
fresh and also Harvest rate when they re release the pro version of their freeze
41:10
dryer you know in my personal opinion yeah the software maybe had kind
41:16
of changed other things but really all I saw was they basically made the same
41:21
size freeze dryer but they just added another tray layer so in my large freeze
41:27
start I've got five trays now they have six it's just a lower surface area for the trays to go into so um I could still
41:35
do Jolly Ranchers let's say the whole Jolly Rancher so not cutting it up I
41:40
could still do that and the puffed up Jolly Rancher isn't going to touch the next shelf but in the pro version it
41:46
would touch it same with the stay fresh too I think so you gotta kind of think
41:52
about what type of candies you're going to do and if you want to have a lot variety I would I would just invest in
41:59
um another shelf unit so get what comes with it but maybe invest in whatever the
42:07
cost is to have um a swap out so if you want to do something that expands more you actually have that to
42:17
expand um let's see
42:27
just looking at something real quick here um David any okay hey thanks
42:34
everyone for joining we're going to wrap up here soon but feel free to put in your questions cently in the process okay
42:42
lelle question candy is Hit or Miss sometimes the candy
42:54
overexpanded that's my first the only ones that you don't want to do 140
43:00
degrees is Jolly Ranchers my sweet spot for Jolly Ranchers has been 135
43:05
degrees um I haven't done this yet but I've been reading on the Facebook
43:11
groups that Harvest Right is now telling you that if you make a modification with
43:17
the customization in your software U by pressing like the the flower looking leaf logo you can switch the the tray
43:27
warming uh program to what they call either A or B something so like whatever
43:33
it is right now you switch it over to the other one and apparently people are seeing now that like the trays are
43:40
individually warming or something like that I'm going to look more into that and ask Harvest right but that's what I
43:47
would look into go to the Facebook groups and just maybe type in the search bar for those Facebook groups and and
43:54
type in like uh Harvest Right uh switch to b or something like that
43:59
and then it'll U probably deliver a post that somebody made so in Harvest Right
44:08
freeze dryers the sensor for heat um for
44:14
the trays is on the second to lowest tray um
44:20
area I was told that when I visited the headquarters at Harvest right so
44:26
naturally like in physics you know it's like the the Heat's going to travel up but it's going
44:31
to get cooler as it travels up right so you're naturally going to see like the
44:36
basically the the the freeze dryer chamber is not seeing is not recognizing
44:41
that that top tray and that bottom tray are not as like hot as the middle ones
44:49
so unfortunately that's just the way they they designed it um so what I do is
44:54
I kind of just say if I'm going to do something that's going to puff up like gummies or Jolly Ranchers um I just pretty much know that
45:03
it's going to be kind of a a cross your fingers on the bottom and the top tray and unfortunately that's just the way it
45:08
is but I heard that there's a fix um by switching the software so check that
45:14
out hope that answers that Mr Eastwood David any thoughts on
45:21
the Chinese freeze jars from Alibaba yeah my thoughts is don't buy them
45:28
uh I mean a lot of things from China we all consume here in the US
45:37
right um all the freeze dryer companies by the way are buying parts from
45:45
China the difference is is like are they doing quality control and assembling them in America okay so some of them are
45:54
some of them are not uh but a Chinese made freeze dryer getting
45:59
shipped over here and you see a price point of $800 when you know that the
46:05
established ones here are $2,500 at a minimum and they work that's where I
46:11
guess my opinion would be i' I I'd have a hard pass on it right now until I had better
46:19
information cringy what do you think about a big company what do you think about big
46:24
companies getting into the free dry candy business like Skittles I've heard some rumors um I actually had someone
46:30
email me and I answered this in a in a great way and uh when I release my podcast uh with um when I release the
46:39
next video about for my podcast this coming weekend um you'll hear from the guy in that Gene we talked
46:48
about this Mars Wrigley who owns
46:53
Skittles um by the way if you if your Costco and Sam's Club still has those
47:00
tubs of Skittles that's awesome here in boisee I've haven't been able to buy those tubs of skills for about three
47:06
months the demand is super high right now so Mars Wrigley is trying to produce
47:13
more Skittles let alone produce a new product called freeze drying
47:18
Skittles probably the rumor that you're hearing is yes they probably are going to be developing their own freeze-dried
47:24
candy um a freeze dried Skittle but think about Mars Wrigley they're a
47:30
publicly traded company they have to one propose that
47:35
put that in a forecast model they have to go through legal to make sure that they get their trademark their copyright
47:44
they have to find the facilities they have to find all the workers they have to figure out their distribution
47:49
channels so they are definitely have a lot bigger of a process to get through
47:55
before it's going to be released it is going to be released like I mean think about all all
48:01
of us selling freeze-dried Skittles huge Market um who it's going to impact is
48:08
all the big companies that you see selling freeze-dried Skittles right now
48:14
um which you know I'm all seeing congrats them but um they are either
48:20
going to be probably priced out um so they're going to have to
48:26
figure out something else or skills may contact them and force them to sign a
48:32
licensing agreement to sell and manufacture freeze stred Skittles for them uh probably that removes at least
48:39
30% of their margin too so um that's the two things that I'm predicting is that
48:45
those two things are going to happen Mars rley will come out with freeze dried Skittles um but it'll happen in two
48:52
different ways either one they will price everybody out of the market and then all their distribution channels
48:58
will buy them directly because they don't want to lose the original candies contracts um and then the larger freeze
49:05
drag candy companies that are selling freeze DED Skittles today that you see in Target that you see in Walmart that
49:12
you see in all these big places they will become either uh makers of freeze
49:18
Strat Skittles with a licensing agreement with from Mars Wrigley or they probably will have to just
49:24
uh pay them a huge licensing fee to do it uh themselves or something like that
49:30
so that's my
49:36
prediction um I'm gonna have to wrap up here so um just looking at some of these uh
49:43
Deborah says uh what about candy pecans do they freeze dry or doesn't um nuts
49:49
don't really freeze dry they're already kind of hard um I don't really see the point in that it's kind of like coffee
49:57
right like it's like oh no I can make it in a powder form well you you know like
50:02
you can already make ground up coffee you know freeze drying coffee doesn't really make any sense
50:09
um okay so yeah uh a couple more questions are
50:16
coming in pting foam core my husband uh is
50:22
worried I'm wearing out the machine with candy we bought a medium five tray Harvest Right February and preserve to
50:28
preserve food not candy I do wanted to F oh I wouldn't worry about well in my
50:35
opinion uh Kim I wouldn't worry about um uh wearing out the
50:42
machine in my opinion um but yes if
50:47
you're going to run it more often with those shorter Cycles you're going to have more usage
50:53
of the pump you're going to have more Cycles therefore having to change out the the oil of the pump um you're
50:58
running at high temperatures then low temperatures uh you're running running for long and then running for short so
51:05
yeah um is it gonna have more time on it yes but um I don't think you have to
51:11
worry about that too much what's the cost of electricity and freeze drying I
51:16
usually equate about $ four to5 dollars per cycle with candy it's you know you could cut that in half so maybe two
51:24
bucks um that's about how I do it all depends on where you live okay well
51:29
thanks a lot for everyone joining I'm going to end this stream um you know send me an email or
51:37
um you know do something that helps me understand whether this stream was helpful I see that the likes are are
51:44
climbing up there thanks for joining I'm planning on doing this again I'm not going to do it as as spontaneously as I
51:49
did today I'm going to try to at least tell you a little bit ahead of time when that is um but I hope this was helpful
51:57
and uh yeah take a look at those YouTube links in my channel links I've got the ROI spreadsheet join my email list would
52:04
love for you to join that um because I'm gonna I'm I'm starting to to kind of talk about more things beyond what I'm
52:10
talking about on YouTube once a week so anyway pop on there thanks a lot for joining have a great rest of the day
